    This film proves that Lord and Miller are writing geniuses. There's so many hilarious quotes and gags throughout. Mostly with the giant food, Steve, and Officer Earl. But they also know how to balance it out with just the right amount of heart. The conflict and ultimate resolution between Flint and his father is handled really well, and overall, this movie just has a great message about embracing who you are and supporting your loved ones.

    Honestly, James Caan was such a perfect casting choice for Tim Lockwood. I can’t think of anybody else who could deliver the gruffness, stern, yet humble and caring tone of a single parent having a hard time understanding his son’s passion but still trying to be helpful. May he rest in peace and continue fishing in Heaven. ❤🛥️🎣

  • @cheshirecat882
    @cheshirecat882 11 месяцев назад +404

    The unusual dynamic between father and son is one of the best parts of this film. Tim Lockwood genuinely loves his son. In the squeal they flesh out the idea that Tim's best moment is fishing with his son, and this feeling never changes through the films. He is super happy to put the 'and son' sign above his shop. At the same time there is a major divide between the two of them. Not through anything they have done, but more about who they are. These two cannot be more different, and have trouble communicating. At the same time Flint want's his dad to be proud of him, but on his own terms, and through out both films Flint has never said a single bad word about his dad and will do what he says.
    In short these two really love each other, but have such incredibly hard time bonding or communicating simply, cause of how opposite they are.

    • @ethribin4188
      @ethribin4188 11 месяцев назад +48

      And the fact they both try so much,even leaving their comfort zones, just to bond with one another, shows how much they care.

  • @Late0NightPC
    @Late0NightPC 11 месяцев назад +124

    I think something else that makes the scene really special is that the Dad actually does try to communicate with Flint in a better way through the labcoat. When it rains you put on a coat. But take a note of the phrase and look at it again. There's no fishing stuff in there, no boats or fish or nets or anything. It's a metaphor sure, but it isn't a fishing metaphor, it's a much more broadly applicable one that basically anyone can understand.
    Flint didn't get the fishing metaphors, and while they were how Tim communicated best, he recognized that it wouldn't work. He can't communicate "normally", but if Flint doesnt get fishing metaphors since he didn't "get" fishing like his dad does, he chose to use a more generic one instead that anyone could understand.
    Which it does also show another element to the dynamic between them. Flint is so used to not "getting" his Dad's style of communication that he has just completely given up on it, even when his Dad is trying to bridge the gap in his own way, Flint tries to shut him down without realizing anything. The Dad grabbing the labcoat shows off how may not understand the tech stuff itself, but he does understand what tech means to Flint, which further supports that the Dad really does genuinely love and care for Flint. He was always genuinely just trying to do what he thought was best for Flint, trying to understand his son in his own way, so he recognized that even if they struggle to communicate with words, they are both "men of action". Words won't get the right idea across, but an action will, for Dad metaphors help him communicate via using words to communicate an action that itself shows his intentions, but for Flint, metaphors don't work so the Dad needed the action itself, so he grabbed the labcoat that meant so much to Flint.

      It's a good way to put it. They barely talk to each other because they think completely different, to the point they assume whatever the other says will be gibberish, even when it's not. That's how distant they are... Yet there is still care for eachother, and they want to close the gap somehow.

    The dark side of this movie that a lot of people don't consider is that the main character would've deformed his feet during childhood because of the spray-on-shoes. His feet would likely grow curled, compressed, like the people in China that practice centuries old foot wrapping for small 'delicate' feet. He would have so many problems walking and standing, and likely have a ton of back issues as he got older.
    Sorry, intrusive thought. Just came to mind around the ~2:30 mark.

    Thank you for this video.
    I often saw it in my recommendation and never watched it, because I didn't saw the movie yet. Put it put the Movie always back into my mind until I finally watched it today.
    It is a strange but really nice movie. And I think without your video, I would've never watched it. But the title of this video always reminded me, to give the movie a try, it seems to have scene that blows you away....
    OK it didn't blew me away, but it was a nice movie, and this is more than enough to me.

    I wish movies were still well written like this movie, but nowadays Disney and Sony will be taking very little time with the story and the rest on making it look good

    You know, Mayor Shelbourne reminds me of someone. Something about his manipulative nature, his willingness to throw anyone under the bus, the ridiculous hair, the horrifying weight gain, the scooter, the absolute disregard for consequence...

    Also, we didn't need a sequel... the original was perfect.

    Imagine how you would actually create the food->water converting machine. Does it use nuclear fission and fusion to create anything from water? That's what I would expect it to do.
