The CANCELLED Series is back! At least for a time. I figured I had cleared out ALL CANCELLED PRODUCTIONS, but no! Now that some time has passed, new project details have been unearthed. Such as today's subject of DisneyToon Studio's rejected Metro. Pixar was to get another spin off expansion to the Cars universe, all about trains in New York. What was it inspired by? How was the plot planned? And what concept art images do we have to observe and breakdown? Find out today as we unravel Disney's CANCELLED Trains Spin-Off...

...The precursor to that wild noodle animation, toned down only in today's video.
I would’ve LOVED to have seen a trains movie, being into Thomas and friends as a kid. Also, about the faceless steam trains, the eyes are actually in the cab window, they’re just out of frame in every shot
You on every man video and now on dazzreviews bro
I woulda LOVED this movie as a kid omg
DUDE HOW
THOMAS THE TAKIN ENGINE
I know it’s for the sake of staying consistent with the designs of the world of cars, but you have to admit it does look weird and disturbing on the trains. Thomas the Tank Engine did a better job of tackling a design for anthropomorphic trains.
With all of the references to train logic, clever designs of buildings and names, and direct appearances of real trains from real railroads, I'd gladly watch this if it gets made!
I love how the logo for Norfolk Southern acts as a beard.
The liberals at Disney probably thought it didn't have enough gay cars of color and took advantage of children with autism so killed it.
the steam engine train does have a face, it's eyes just aren't at the front like the Thomas trains but further back where the windows of the drivers cab would be. You can see it's angry expression quite well in the poster at 15:24 actually.
If this were made, we would've gotten a disney version of Planes Trains and automobiles.
I came to this video specifically for this comment, thank you 🙏
@@starchild199x Same
Good one fecking funny
You’re welcome.
@@crimsoncrusader518 👍
Great to see another "Cancelled" video. As much as I love the concept art, and find the whole gang chase/murder mystery plot interesting, I'm not sure how well it could've worked with the trains all stuck to their rails. Would've been interesting to see how they addressed that existential nightmare in the movie, though.
Agreed
I probably would've liked it.
Um, trains in thomas didn't complain about that, and honestly I prefer fixed guided transportation
Yeah. As at least cars, planes and boats/ships have the freedom to go pretty much anywhere
@@Cooldude-ko7ps Boats can’t go on land, and where one can go really shouldn’t matter!
Yeah can’t imagine a story about vehicles that can only move on a set rail would be that interesting compared to formula one racers and planes
Well unless the train is named Thomas
And the Thomas and Friends lore is probably one of the most interesting media out there.
From the Railway Series all the way to the Original 5 to 7 Seasons of the TV Series.
I imagine in the movie, the trains would be able to switch over to different rail lines pretty easily, so that would be the explanation they use for how trains could go to a bunch of different places. M'Paul would probably be able to get to wherever the plot needs him to go (except for maybe one important place, which would require help from some cars or something).
I beg to disagree, plenty of stories using trains have been encapsulating and interesting.
@@redboxgamingyt3452 BRO FACTS!
Yeah, You can't go wrong with Thomas, unless If its AEG, because thats a Dumpster Fire.
The reason why the steam trains dont have faces is because cars have the faces in the cab area, but unlike most modern trains that have a cab at the front, a steam engine has its cab at the back, making it very difficult to give a steam engine a face using cars logic. the only steam engine that could have a plausible face is a Cab Forward, which is literally just a steam engine flipped around so that the cab is at the front of the engine.
(this was done specifically on the Southern Pacific railroad because crews were suffocating from the smoke inside regular cab steam engines when entering tunnels and snow sheds in the Sierra Nevada mountains so the SP came up with a cab forward design that could put the smoke of the engine behind the crew)
Actually the steam engines do have faces They're just hard to see because of being on the cab
The reason the steam trains don't have faces on is pretty simple. In the Planes movies, the eyes on the steam engines are on the cabs in the place of windows, with the mouth on the front. Probably to set apart from Thomas. You can see this in some of the concept art.
I love the way how much they focused on the world'building compare to planes and cars
it is a intiresting consept. Also i liked that the consept art showed real life companies like Norfolk Southern: 19:20 Amtrak and New Haven 14:28.
But since they where playing with a darker theme they could also play with the story about an old locomotive. They could play with the age and the company of the trains. Because depending on when this movie would have taken place. I feel like the New Haven diesel would have either been in excursion service or in a museum. Because if it is around today. Then New haven Would no longer exist. This could also mean that Penn Central was a thing at one point. And that failed. And so Conrail came forward. And then CSX and Norfolk Southern bought it.
Maybe it could have been about a diesel from Conrail that did not have a owner as it had not been registered properly. And then it goes on an adventure to find a place it can call home. While some old corrupt officers from the remnants of Penn Central tries to hunt it down to scrap it. And so it goes on a adventure on the American railnetwork. And on the way it gets help from other trains. The diesel could have gotten the idea for a home in a museum from a steam locomotive in excursion service. It could have been Big Boy, Daylight, 844, 611 or some other retired train.
But that is just an idea. I would have liked to see it.
I second that I love steam locomotives it also fits in with the warriors as I assume the trains would be very loyal and competitive when it comes to there company's, especially since some steam trains still run on preserves which would be like reservations in our world
The New haven locomotive could be a Connecticut DOT commuter locomotive. They had FL-9 and Genesis diesels painted in New Haven livery operating into Grand Central. There were also Long Island Railroad diesels (DE-30?) in the shot.
Would that mean that various famous locomotives exist in cars?
@@maxwellthehedgehog6273 most likely.
@@RailRide Which I guess if there was a nit to pick, Amtrak should have been down at Penn Station.
this actually sounds like it could of been a good movie
You could really lean into some darker existential themes with this. Apart from trains being stuck on the track, trains are much more utilitarian than cars. There's a real market for second hand cars, project cars, and historic vehicles, and while today there's definitely a strong railway preservation movement, once your average locomotives service life is up it's bound for the scrap yards.
This would have been Disney’s answer to Thomas the Tank Engine. The narrow gauge Darjeeling engine from Planes did remind me of Peter Sam a bit, even though it was a different class of loco. Imagine adding a gigantic roster of train characters in the cancelled Metro movie, had it gained merchandise also, like electric subway engines, diesel shunters, steam locos, such as Tender Engines and Tank Engines, and so much more.
11:44 It’s not so much “main character design syndrome” it’s probably a nod to the real NYC subway. “A” division lines are all numbered from former IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit Company) services. Meanwhile the “B” division lines are all lettered from former IND (Independent Subway System) and BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation) services. Additionaly, the “A” division trains are shorter and narrower than the “B” division trains due to the loading gauge.
Taking all this into account, the trains in the time stamp are most likely “A” division trains, and all of them are smaller than our main character as he has an “M” (the M probably represents the line he works more so than his name) which makes him a “B” division train.
I would've liked to have seen a Disney movie on trains. They had movies on Cars and Planes, and gave boats plenty of background shots, but they've barely show or touches railroads in that universe.
Heya, small info drop for you on when this idea might've been in the works!
There's a bonus snippet from the Planes extras, in which Klay Hall discusses the idea behind their film, and *originally* the plan was to make the train movie first. However, I guess Klay Hall's sudden burst of an idea for creating this Planes trilogy happened in enough time that the train concept was pushed back until later, while they focused on the Dusty story idea. It likely was in partial development from around that point on?
This reminds me of the cancelled "The Adventures of Thomas" movie, with its more mature themes and such. There's probably not enough information about it for a video, but it's certainly an interesting project to look into. Thanks for talking about this cancelled movie, I wouldn't have known about it at all otherwise!
Is that the movie set in ww2
@@johnnycotton3217 Yes, it is! I really would've loved to see it happen, but it doesn't look like it'll ever be revived, sadly. Mattel did say that they were working on a live-action film, which is still in development as of this month, but I don't think the two projects are related. Would be cool if they somehow were, though.
i know some people seem to disagree in the comment section but this storyboard art is so fucking cool and i would have GENUINELY loved to see how it played out, the theme seeming pretty edgy too it could’ve made for such a cool movie, the workarounds for the trains being on the tracks (like shown) are pretty creative too and i can imagine a high speed chase where there’s two rails beside each other and a bunch of crossing rails for them to go across, maybe i’m just too hopeful but i am legitimately enthralled by the ideas presented
14:25 there are some real life locomotives such as an Amtrak GE P42DC, New Haven EMD FL9 and a Long Island railroad locomotive i forgot the name of
Filling in the blank: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_DE30AC_and_DM30AC
I just love how the Cars Movies and The Planes Movies have some locations that are colorful and lighten up, but Metro haves alot of dark elements and greedy New Work city, and it sad it got canceled but i would love to see this amazing movie
The idea Metro is so good to me that I'm litterally remaking the concept in 2d animation film. I have 45% of the rough script down how the hell am I so invested in this canceled ass project
how it is?
14:27 wow, A Amtrak p42, An NH F7 and long island train! wow!
10:10 i think is not that they don't have a face, but they have it on the little windows they have at the cab, because i think that's a steam engine, and TTTE (thomas the tank engine) has made us used to the faces being on the door of the smoke box, but on the cars universe, the eyes are on the windows, and remember that some engines like the flying scottsman are pretty large, so maybe this is just a case where the eyes are too far of the rest of the face
and that make me question, how things like the double fairlies would work, because Mighty mac (a double fairlie on the TTTE universe) had a face on each smokebox, but would be the same on the cars universe?, they just have one face on one side?
If john ratzenberger had been in this, then he really wouldn't been in planes trains and automobiles 😄😄😄
Wait, there's a second Planes movie?
It's a Thomas the Train 2.0, Disney????
The steam engines have their eyes on their cabs, near the back, the mouth is under the round front 15:26
As a railfan, I’m not a big fan of trains with faces anymore. But this series had a lot of potential
2:29 I can't believe it. Imagine if we got a sequel, to the greatest movie ever made.
12:04.
I'm going to Hell for this, but...
*The Twin Tires.*
Lol
Nice joke
If a ca-plane crashes to the twin tires:🗿
We could’ve seen more of the Wig Wag Signal from Cars 1 😭😭😭
I don't think this one got canned for being darker. The last time I remember disney canned one of those was with zootopia, and it was mostly the directors choice. And that zootopia script was far darker than whatever this one was gonna be.
4:21 Interestingly, "The Warriors" is loosely based upon "The Anabasis" or "The March of the Ten Thousand" written and compiled by Xenophon sometime around 370 BC. The book is an account of a Greek mercenary army hired by Cyrus the Younger to help fight a civil war in Persia against his brother Artaxerxes. Cyrus is killed, and the civil war is a failure, many of the Greek officers are killed and the army is stranded in Northern Mesopotamia. The main plot revolves around the Greek mercenaries long trip back to the relative safety of the Black Sea coast through hostile territory, so you can see its correlation to "The Warriors."
Ever since I’ve seen the spy train in Cars 2 (I forgot his name, but whatever.), I’ve always wanted to know what a Trains movie would be like, and this concept came close to what I was expecting, heck, probably even MORE than what I anticipated for what it was visualized into so far during its development!
Just like any other film with interesting concepts, it’s a shame that it was canned into cancellation before it was even known at all towards those outside of the studio making the movie.
Cars, planes, and even trains.
Vote here for next live vehicle:
It's a shame, really wanted to see a Intercity 125 or JNR 0 series in the Pixar sentient vehicel universe.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A COMBINATION OF THOMAS AND FRIENDS AND CARS!
The boss slowly slid the script and pile of art to the side. He pulled up the two writers on a quick video call, keeping his face neutral. When they both signed on, nervously, hoping for good news - the boss sighed. You could see a minute droop of disappointment on their faces before the boss exploded.
"THIS IS A KID'S FRANCHISE!!" He exclaimed. "GANGS? A mic between The Warriors and SCORCESE?" He threw the papers on his desk onto the floor. "ALL YOU LEFT OUT WAS THE HOOKERS AND BLOW. I can't believe I pay you for this. Trashcan everything and nix TRAINS. This isn't happening and I never want to hear about it, again."
He tapped the button to quit the call with more self-control than one might expect, but he was used to treating writers like this. On the one hand, they're just big dreamers, babies catching fireflies of fancy... on the other hand they are adults and just can't help wanting to make something for their own... mature interests, usually innocent enough. Sometimes they need reminding of who the target demographic is.
I'm just waiting for Mattel to revive the Adventures of Thomas movie
i think I saw somewhere that the ORIGINAL concept of animated vehicles BEFORE the original "Cars" was "Trains!" - Although the concept artwork I saw at the time was steam trains. (Would've been VERY appropriate, considering Walt Disney's love of steam locomotives!).
That being said, the "METRO" concept looks as though it would've been interesting. Also as a New Haven Railroad buff, I got a REAL kick out ot the Grand Central station scene at 14:24 in this video, showing what is very obviously a New Haven FL9 alongside an Amtak GE diesel! 😃
The idea of a trains movie sounds interesting since I feel like it could have been a really interesting way to speak on disabilities. In a way they have to do things differently, don’t fit in compared to everyone else, and the way they see the world would be completely different! They can only go where everyone else says they can! Idk, after Monsters University I’d love my allegories for these things. (Yes monsters university is an allegory for neurodivergence and you can’t convince me otherwise!)
Perhaps Planes ought to bundle with Cars.
well because of Thomas & BBC did a short lived series called Underground Ernie & a bigger show called Chuggington
so either way thats why it was cancelled
I'd love to see Disney put out Buzz Lightyear of Star Command & American Dragon on DVD!
nothing wrong with old train cars made into diners as thats been done since the 1930s & some were made of old trolley/trams too
some still exist even today!
The train in that 1 coloured shot actually has real-life basis with NS on the side a.k.a Norfolk Southern
THIS MOVIE WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL!
Btw there’s some mention of the trains movie in the planes commentary bonus section but it’s been years since I looked at it
I love the fact that a lot of the trains are based on real ones
9:47 that black engine your calling big boy is a norfolk southern engine I can tell cause this livery is one of norfolk southern the dash 9 liveries
being someone with a hardcore addiction to trains makes me want this so badly
*They think they can defeat ME!*
No one will ever defeat you
The "Pony Trix" joke is incredibly subtle and you only get it if you're knowledgeable about steam locomotives. If you want to get the joke: The pony truck on a steam locomotive is the unpowered set of wheels beneath the cab. You can probably figure out the rest.
As someone who's been a train person since he was 4 years old, I would've loved this (probably)
I could see this as maybe being an experiment by Disney into PG-13 or more mature themes, with it being produced by a smaller studio and with a smaller budget so if it is unsuccessful they could cut their losses.
A trains movie would have been cool but I’m biased as I’m a rail fan
1:46 Wait, what about Lion King 2? That was a good sequel in my opinion.
15:26 the steam engine actually has it's eyes on the cab
No way they would have done Trains... like.. how?
and then I saw all concept art and I'm dying out of curiosity...
12:00 a pun on the ACDelco brand of car batteries I’d imagine
I'll never forgive Pixar for cancelling this.
That's Disneytoon.
Blame disney.
@@WysterzStudiozwe’re already hating on Disney, so why not Pixar for canceling this aswell
I've not really watched a lot of Dazz's videos so i don't know if it is the background of his other videos but man do i want to play Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness right now.
The Unlucky Tug NEEDS to see this
Interesting story concept.
If you watch planes 2, the steam engine has a face, just it's mouth is below the front of the boiler while the eyes are back behind the boiler in the cab.
15:26
*proceeds to miss the face on the cab*
Besides them being able to basically go anywhere makes no sense this seems like it could’ve been fun
Imagine a planes, trains, and automobiles Easter egg in this movie
Kinda like how dinosaur movies spin-offs are cancelled because land before time happens to be the same with blue sky making them but couldn’t because ice age stuff and LBT conspiracy vs the Thomas and cars conspiracy
Are you series trains are my favorite veichle and have always been one of my top favorite interest
I would LOVE to see Big Boy 4014 apart of it
A thriller cars/trains movie.. hu.. that’s such a wild idea and I would’ve loved to see where that went
Man that third Planes movie wouldve been nice to see
I think the guard rail car must be an excessive crush. You could see the little hearts floating towards him in the photo
You know maybe all the steam locomotives are like the ones from Planes F&R the cab is were the eyes are and the mouths are the buffer beam
I remember around 2017 there were rumours about another cars spin off called space and it was about space craft
guessing by the concept art and the two film plots, perhaps m80 is witness to a crime and ends up running with m'paul to survive and expose the evidence, perhaps with the implication that this might not an uncommon thing on the nyc metro. Also the barrier car is likely a road rail vehicle who is actually a crane and the circle over the X? tha'ts designed after amarican railroad crossing/'X'ing signs. Finally, what would taxicabs even do? they're cars themselves so unless taxis are more like couriers for hire they're a little useless, unless cabs are for smaller vehicles such as forklifts and small cars such as guido, which in turn also suggests this is how buses and coaches work, as buses are canon as shown in cars 2, which then suggests that car transporter/drive-on flatbed lorries are the bus/coach/mass tansit equivelant for larger vehicles and assorted vehicles that are the equivelant of animals
M'Paul is really growing on me
Damn, at first i was uninterested but now with the concept art im actually a little sad its not real. I mean i cant imagine the world building would all make too much sense but like i gotta know why that icecream truck is careening towards mpaul.
This looks like legit like a Scorcese but with Trains, sad that it never made it, from the looks of it it might be too adult for a pixar movie
Wish it happened. We need another "Living Locomotive" franchise other than Thomas all the freaking time.
9:17 the best part X)
10:07 The face is on the window at the cab.
Planes wasn’t that great I mean planes 2 was but seeing this cars spin-off could have been good sad as a cars fan seeing this get cancelled is sad.
Cars,Planes,trains,bikes,boats?something else?
This guy’s so British that he couldn’t identify the crossing light and crossbuck as well as the balloon smokestack in the NYC skyline.
The grand central terminal with 3 trains has an amtrak train
If possible you should talk about the cancelled Disney Rocket spinoff
I really like the artwork they made
Trains movie. Nice, but I wonder how Mattel will react to it. Mattel dose own Thomas & Friends, which is About Trains (or is Supposed to be about Trains).
tbh I think I could write a storyline for this but instead of the metro include just steam locomotives
It was a great idea...so Disney axed it.
15:00 missed opportunity for Ru'Paul
How about the Canceled Disney Cancelled forgotten Movie that Epic Mickey almost had
Fun fact: The concept art for this canceled project was one of the influences for the visuals of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
I wish we could have a trains movie
Okay I ain't gonna lie, this concept art is fantastic and this movie sounds genuinely interesting... Such a shame it was cancelled.
Think Matel would have had a problem with this. Talking trains and all
That movie would’ve really gone off the rails
boy, i dont want another "vehicle with eyes" movies
Disney should do this movie in the style of the concept arts and Disney could win 800 million metrodollars.
I love disney trains❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Imagine if they made one and put Thomas in this.
