What a great explanation of the exhaust back presure system. I bought a speedo cable at the auto parts store and ran it through the tube with a drill . After a friend had problems with his.
Being a retired fleet mechanic that had no experience with the 7.3 I try to watch a lot of videos relating to the 7.3 .
You are my go to guy for the best explantions of possible problems.
My 01 7.3 has had a few power modifications just enough to make pulling our 5th wheel camper easier.
I was fortunate enough to find a rust free like new truck 10 years ago. And it still is.
It will probably out last me. When I walk through the RV parks and see all the big fancy trucks ( that I like ) i wonder what they will be like when they are 22 years old. And how many problems they will have with just the regen exhaust systems. Let alone every thing else on them high tech engines.

After circling around this problem, checking voltages and cleaning computer plugs it all boiled down to one problem.
I did not buy a Ford Motor Co. sensor. They wanted $160 for the EBP sensor and couldn't bring myself to pay that much so I went with a $40.00 version from a outside source.
I finally bought one from Riff Raff Diesel which was a FoMoCo part for $90 with shipping and that solved all my error codes.
Thanks for your input and let this be a lesson to all the others following your web casts.

It's a good idea to check the wiring to the cam position sensor too. My tube had rusted through and the exhaust had melted the plastic wire loom and the wire insulation. It hadn't shorted out yet but was close. I pulled it up to the top of the engine so I could resplice the wires and replace the loom.

Thanks for a great video. I have a early '99 F250 4wd Crewcab SB. I have owned it for 17 years, and have never modified anything on it. I never really needed to. I did notice my milage dropped from about 17mpg to about 12mpg. I also have a hard time starting it below 30 deg, but I thought I maybe had a few glow plugs out. I just thought I needed to drive it more often. Long story short, I was looking into why it was stalling, dying or accelorating funny and I scanned it and got 2 codes - P0221 channel B and P0479. So thanks for explaining the P0479 code really well. Both are easy fixes, so thanks again

Nice video, just might want to add that detail for future viewers. Thanks for the tips, helped a lot.

Another great video Clint, I just have a question I have a early 99 and when it’s cold mines not hard to start or anything it’s still fires right up at the turn of a key but I get that wooshing sound coming from the left and right side wheel wells from my engine just like you’re describing in your video and when I accelerate it stops but then when I let off the gas you can hear the wooshing inside the cab as well when you’re driving but it only does this when it’s cold. I was told by my mechanic that I normally take my truck to when it’s a job that is more than I want to tackle on my own and he said it was that exhaust valve thing on the pedestal and he said that’s normal to hear that wooshing when it’s below 40°F? He said that’s something a lot of people delete later on when replacing the O-rings in the pedestal or some thing and that it’s supposed to help warm up the engine faster in the cold and he told me it’s not the tube or the sensor but I’m only getting on average about 13 miles per gallon with my truck and that’s mostly city and some highway driving but no long highway driving so mostly city and I thought that was normal for these trucks. Is my mechanic wrong and that wooshing sound that I here outside the truck and inside is actually a possible problem with my sensor and tube? I don’t hear it when it is warmer out like my mechanic said so I just dismissed it and figured he was right and it was that valve on the pedestal that allows exhaust in to warm up the engine.

Hello I figured I would check in with you, I have been experiencing the exhaust back pressure valve hissing sound. I just replaced my sensor and tube with motorcraft and am still experiencing the issue. It will happen after a cold start and will continue once operating temperatures are reached. However, if I shut the vehicle off and turn it right back on the hissing goes away completely. I will be checking the voltages at the plug, but at this rate my issue must be a computer, wiring, pedestal, or excessive gunk at the butterfly valve.

Very good video! Lots of helpful information. What should ebp sensor readings be in psi under various conditions via live data stream? Trying to figure this dang smoking issue out still with my truck that you've been helping me with. Ebp sensor and tube are new but I'm not sure if the data they are sending is faulty data or not? .6 psi at idle and also with key on engine off. 1.2 psi at 2500 rpm no load.. Live data for my baro sensor shows 0psi and as a voltage it reads 4.6v according to my autel scan tool. Is that normal? I thought it should be somewhere around 14.7 as well as map and ebp with koeo. Map reads 12.7 koeo. Tried another map sensor and I get 12.67. Something is not adding up here or am I interpreting the data wrong?

Just ordered another. 5v reference, ground, and signal return wire all test good. When I unplug the sensor 75% of the smoke clears. 12 psi map reading looks like it's from my TS chip. When I set it to stock setting, it goes to 14.6 psi koeo. I guess just cause the ebp sensor is new doesn't mean it's good.

I have a 97 powerstroke and I thought my sensor was useless because I deleted my back pressure valve. Can you confirm that if my sensor is having an issue that my gas mileage wouldn't be affected?

Sir, do you think 10-11 mpg for a 97 CCLB is common? Or do you think I should go out the hundred dollars for an exhaust back pressure sensor? I've done quite a few upgrades including a Hydra chip. But even in stock setting I'm still only getting 10 to 11 mpg.

Gear ratios in all E4ODs, both gas and diesel, are identical.
The biggest difference is the bolt pattern to the engine. There were three E4OD cases. One for small block engines (300-302-351,) one for big block (460,) and one for diesel (7.3L.) They are not interchangeable an no E4OD had a removeable bellhousing.

You can test it by using the cruise control when it starts acting up. If you can accelerate with the cruise accel button and the problem doesn't happen, you've most likely got a fuel pedal issue. Clint has a video on accelerator pedal and related issues.
