PAINTING PLEIN AIR - Church Cove Cornwall with CASEIN PAINTS

- It was a warm summer evening and I decided to head to the beach at Church Cove in Cornwall to do some plein air painting with casein paints.
My daughter was with me (behind the camera) but we weren't sure if the tide was coming in or going out! The sun was setting and in my eyeline which was very challenging.
I used one of my Khadi cotton rag sketchbooks that I save for coastal sketching. Casein paint is excellent for working outdoors as it dries nice and quickly allowing me to layer up the paint - (similar to how I love painting with oils over several weekly sessions) - but in 1 hour long session.
Also in my bag were graphite and charcoal sticks which are very useful for sketching where rapid marks are required.
Thank you for watching - I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe and hit 'like' as I will be making more plein air videos (sketching and oil painting) over the Summer months.
All the best - Andrew
Terrific!
Thank you 😊
Painted along with you on this one...fun!

Love watching this process - gives a beautiful result
Thank you 😊
Lovely work Andrew I haven't used them myself but the Casein paints look fun to use , thanks for the demo . Keith
Thank you Keith - casein paints are fun if you like opaque colours. They work like gouache but have a nicer feel to me. All the best - Andrew
Really interesting to see you work and the sound of the waves were amazing too 🌊
Thank you very much. Nice to hear the waves 😃
Absolutely loving these videos! So informative and inspirational 🎨
Thank you very much 😀
Brilliant location. I can almost smell the sea air.! I'll have to try those casein paints one day.
Cheers.!
Thanks Bill - try them if you get chance. I'm sure you'll love them. Cheers 😀
So great Andrew, know it is from 21, but wonderful to watch you batle the fading and changing light. Would like to know why you prefer Casein to Gouashe you mention it dries fast, other reasons?
I am quite smitten with it and have tried to find it here in Denmark, but quite difficult to get hold of. Where do you buy yours in UK?
Thanks Susana
I like casein because it’s permanent when dry. This makes it easier for me to layer over other paint more quickly.
I bought a starter set from Amazon and then single tubes of colour I like from Norwich Art Supplies (online)
Thanks Andrew, nice painting and very relaxing to watch. May I ask whether you have a preferred UK supplier for casein? It doesn't seem to be very widely stocked in the UK.
Thank you very much - I find Norwich Art Supplies has the best range online
Just got myself a set of casein paints. Exited to see your video! Weird question? Can you pour casein in a tin like watercolour and reactivate it later?
That’s great 😃
Not sure about reactivating casein. Once dry it is unusable
I haven’t used casein paints before but how do they compare to gouache. Do you buy mixed colours in casein paints or mix them as you go.excuse my questions but it’s all very different. Thanks
Hi Amanda
Casein dries quickly and is permanent when dry. I buy them in tubes and mix as I go with water. I prefer them to gouache but that’s just my opinion 😃
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt thanks so much. I like gouache but am keen to try casein paints plein air.
@@amandagleason8641 they dry quickly outdoors. I like to use them with plenty of water at first in thin washes similar to watercolour, then I thicken the paint to layer on top
