- This is the incredible moment a pensioner and his younger colleague held up four military trucks thought to be carrying nuclear warheads. Brian Quail, 78, and his colleague Alasdair Ibbotson, 21, brought the convoy to a ginding halt by throwing themselves in front and under the trucks. The pair flagged them down on a roundabout in Stirling, before Brian crawled underneath a truck while Alasdair lay down in front of them. Police are seen jumping off motorbikes and running over to the pair, desperately trying to pull them away from the convoy. Video footage recorded by activists from Stirling University CND shows a queue of traffic building up in the background as officers struggle to remove the protestors.
For a police escort and a nuclear convoy, it didnt take much to stop them...

Same reasoning. Stopping the convoy for 90 seconds is no big deal. If anyone tried to attack it while the cops were fishing the old guy from under the van, they Royal Marines escorting it would've dealt with them. The security precautions are reasonable and virtually guaranteed to keep the convoy safe, without going over the top into letting the military just execute unarmed people who get in the way.

If hit in the trailer, it will have a brand new hole in the side.
If hit in the cab, it would be disabled.
Either outcome is hardly catastrophic, and the shooter would die very soon after launching the grenade, costing whatever organization he belongs to an operator and a very difficult to acquire weapon for absolutely no gain.
Hence why nobody has ever tried, not even the IRA which actually did have stockpiles of explosives and RPGs. They couldn't actually cause a release of radioactive material without extracting the transport container from the truck and setting it up with demolition charges, and probably not even then ; Couldn't steal the warhead and killing British soldiers was way easier and less dangerous at checkpoints and patrols.

In the US these convoys move with a dozen heavily armed US Airforce units all loaded with each warhead truck and I believe the only move one at a time. I don't think they would get away with that...they would instantly have three or four Air Force CRF team members dragging them out of the road at gunpoint and would immediately been thrown in the cage in the back of one of the escort units. This convoy sitting for that long is risky for sure. I'm fairly certain if they tazed that guy he'd be out of there pretty quick.

That's idiotic. They move warheads for maintenance, while leaving the vast majority of them ready to launch at any given moment.
That was a dangerous decision on the part of the convoy to stop. I could easily see something like this as a setup for an ambush; first stopping the convoy then attacking it while their attention was directed elsewhere.

This is the UK, it's very difficult to get weapons and equipment to get the warheads and I'd expect there are armed police in one of the trucks ready to be called upon

You have no idea how difficult it is to move someone this large who doesn't want to be moved.
Let me illustrate: During WW2, American paratroopers jumped out of the side doors of a C-47. There was a very strict procedure about how a trooper was to approach the door, which included a regulation about where he was to place his hands. If a recruit during his first jump placed his hands on the INSIDE of the door frame, he was immediately removed from the line and sat down back inside the plane.
Why?
Because if he did that during a combat jump, and chickened out, there was no force that could've POSSIBLY forced him out of the plane. Recruits have managed to resist the collective push of 40 odd other troopers just by locking their arms in place.
The cops in the video did drag the guy out after only a minute or so, even though he was doubtlessly latched onto something. I don't see why people in these comments are panicking about it.

Blocking a convoy like this brings a lot of people in danger. The route should be taken as smooth as possible and in a limited short time frame. Blocking also enlarges the threat for a attack.Why did they stop?

it was a decoy convoy, hence why they didn't roll as soon as the guy was out from under. The real convoy did not look like a military convoy and was long gone and no one knew the wiser.
The fact that it is that easy to get a line of nuclear warheads to halt and stay still for this much time, enough for someone to make a move, is scary.
Right, because the only thing stopping Cobra Commandos from attacking the convoy is the fact that it's moving - these highly trained and heavily armed menaces to world peace have no depth perception, see, and can't hit a moving target :D

That was rather touching. You don't often see the police worry so much over an old man who is in the twilight of his years, but still thinks he can be every much a ********* as the smiling lad.
Charges should include interfering with government and national security operations. Should carry a minimum 30-year prison sentence with no chance of parole or getting out early. It also looks like they did it on purpose to separate the convoy from security trailing it, which should carry an additional 30-year sentence.

+Kersey They pretty much did. The fat guy was holding onto the truck, and it's not that easy to dislodge someone like that without causing major injuries. So they got a bunch of guys and pulled him out. By that time the other guy has already been dragged aside.
Fortunately, the UK still retains some semblance of sanity and their cops don't immediately escalate to maiming and/or killing unarmed people. Notice how a cop records everything with a camera so that the protesters can't claim he was beaten or otherwise abused.
Overall it's no big deal ; Only stupendously authoritarian Americans have a problem with how this was handled.

Under no circonstances is it acceptable for a country to deem acceptable to stop for a protest in the way of a nuclear weapon transport. If this was a country with common sense, (like usa), there would be 2 military helicopters, atleast 6 military humvees with mounted turrets, and an armored semi.
This is not okay for United Kingdom’s to do, and if they do not consider their weapon security more seriously, their right to have nuclear weaponry should be abolished.
In countries with proper nuclear weapon security, anyone blocking will be considered as an ambush and the lives of millions of civilians will not be risked to determine if this is a protest or a terrorist hijack attempt. Protesters will be ram over, the convoy will not slow down, and humvees mounted turrets will open fire while helicopters will be ready to engage with additional force.

You did nothing but hold up a convoy for no more than five minutes, only becoming a minor nuisance to the officers and not even realizing how irrelevant stopping a convoy is to a country's nuclear program. They're lucky this wasn't in America, where the convoy has the authorization to use immediate Deadly Force against anyone who could compromise the nuke.
I participated in a half state nuclear convoy back in the 80's, we were briefed that we were under orders to shoot first, ask questions later. We had an old Dodge truck stopped along our route, we stopped the convoy as Washington State Troopers dealt with the truck's occupant helping arrest him and towing his truck. While we stopped a large number of Security Police including my truck were out providing security with our weapons locked and loaded. The truck hauling the weapons was an armored semi truck with an armored box containing the weapons. The man was taken to jail under federal charges for interfering with a military convoy!
If it was an actual nuclear convoy, the military personell would have had every right to open fire.

It is a huge risk to stop for them, they leave the convey short one truck. It has less security, and can be attacked easier. In situations like this they should have run them over, they are risking national security if they stop.

If a couple peaceful protesters could hold up a convoy like this, I'm a bit concerned about what could happen if someone else in their position actually meant to do harm.
An actual ambush would be able to hold up a convoy anyways.
They'd just park a truck on the road, or use explosives to damage the surface.
