    What a great idea incorporating this into prop building. Its amazing what people can do with that foam when making their cosplay outfits and costumes. Thanks for taking the time to pump a vid out it was nice to see you.

      I will be using this a lot more! So many uses for the prop builder!

    Had a suggestion (I'm a retired Fabric worker Air Force) use some spray glue on some card board and lay the templets down on the glued side, dry, and cut out… makes a stiffer templet. Use card board about as thick as a pizza box or even a pizza box if you like.

    Great tutorial, I am working on a freddy faz bear as a display piece that looks at the door when someone opens it, then when its closed it looks back ahead, i have the mechanics done, just have to figure out how to trigger the animation when the door opens, but now i can create the body thanks to this

    This...actually makes more sense than what I was thinking, which was just trying to bulk up my horseman's body with pool noodles. I just happen to have a yoga mat I got at Goodwill (for cosplay armor) - I'll use that to bulk up his torso, then coat it with Monster Mud (he's standing in front of a tree pointing at his next victim) and use the noodles for his arms.

    I beat Jose! LOL
    I never thought of using the foam for body forms. Sure beats my plastic bag mannequin I have been working on. I am going to have to check out that tutorial on Evil Teds channel for that glue container. I love your ending. I think I have a never ending passion to build. Great video.

    Great video! This helps with my Lifesize Michael Myers I am in the process of making, he’ll be super realistic (that’s the goal) and he will have very realistic posable pvc arms and posable silicone hands, I hope to make him animated in the future but for this year he will be a static prop. I’ve just finished cutting out the foam pieces and am going to finish glueing the armor tomorrow possibly. Any advice on how to get the arm to do an up and down stabbing motion with a wiper motor?

  • @savgoulis2826
    @savgoulis2826 4 года назад +1

    You could do the same thing using just two pieces by 'darting' the curves required and some prior sculpting with the heat gun.

    • @halstaff
      @halstaff  4 года назад

      Absolutely! One of the cool things about this process is you can make it as simple or detailed as you want.

    Why when I look for animatronic videos is it always the costume none of the mechanical things??! Like seriously the only one I found is a head mechanism with a guy that has such a strong accent I can't really understand 2lwhat he is saying AND he doesn't list ALL of the parts!

    • @halstaff
      @halstaff  7 лет назад

      I know exactly what you are saying! I want to see under the hood on how something actually works. Check out some of my other videos where I try to show more of the "nuts and bolts" of the builds. I have done some Facebook Live episodes that I have posted on here that include a lot of info. If there is something specific you are looking to build, let me know and I'll see if I have more specifics that I can provide for you.

      Have you ever seen Aaron fectors RUclips channel? He shows lots of videos of him repairing the mechs. He also has a premium subscriber thing where you can get even more animatronic material. The channel is TheRockafire.

  • @JohnMassaglia

    Steve, have you tried cutting those camping mats with a hot wire foam cutter?

    • @halstaff
      @halstaff  7 лет назад

      You probably could use one if you were careful with the fumes but I'm
      not sure you could get clean enough seams. To get a good, tight joint
      it is important that the cuts be straight and even. I found that I
      needed to be careful when using the heat gun when shaping the foam. It
      is easy to distort the shape of the edges if you are not careful.

    If i buy a hallo ween animatronic can I take the costume off and put something a little more different

    • @halstaff
      @halstaff  6 лет назад

      Absolutely! In fact, a great cost savings idea is to purchase used or broken animatronics from the Halloween stores after the holiday at substantial discounts. You can either repair the animatronic or simply salvage a costume, mask and hands of a character you like. I always take into consideration when building my own animatronics, the possibility that I may repurpose them as a new character in the future.

    Do you put a final finish of some type on these or is this always completely hidden by the costumes on top? You indicated these were armor so I assume these are on the outside though?

    • @halstaff
      @halstaff  7 лет назад

      I don't put a finish on but Ted and Bill both have tutorials on their sites on how to do it and what products to use. For my purposes, just hitting it with the heat gun seals it enough. I will have costumes on mine and my animatronics are all stored inside during inclement weather.
