Yessss, I was there a few weeks ago. Such a captivating place. I'll be back soon, I think. My parents are from the Caribbean and I agree that Salvador has that vibe. I met a few travellers of Caribbean heritage like myself. I was born in the UK and I connected and fitted right in. Love the place. I would recommend this place in Barra: Pousada Estrela do Mar in Salvador do Bahia to stay. A nice, clean and well located inn that is very close to the Barra Lighthouse/ It is run by a young 31 year old Afro-Brazilian called Markos. He runs it with his sister. They grew up in Rome but are Afro-Brazilians who were adopted by an Italian couple but they chose to return home to contribute to the local economy. Markos speaks English. The customer service at his Inn is great and the breakfast is gargantuan (huge). They serve serve fresh fruit, eggs, bread, ham and heaps of other bits and pieces. Take a look and support an afro-Brazilian local if you plan to travel to Salvador . I used to walk from Barra Lighthouse along the Beach Promenade to a few towns along the coast to Rio Velhermo. The locals thought I was mad but Westerners walk...it was great. I just strode like I belonged there. No one bothered me...they did look at me (I think they might have guessed I may have been a 'tourista' but it wasn't obvious...it was only obvious when I opened my mouth. They thought I was a local Brazilian. Salvador do Bahia is such a captivating place. I'll be back soon, I think. My parents are from the Caribbean and I agree that Salvador has that vibe. Not really. We felt safer in Salvador than in Rio. The neighborhood we stayed is called Rio Vermelho, very calm, lots of great restaurants and nightlife, no street hustlers. When you go to the more touristy areas - Porto da Barra and Pelourinho then you need to watch your back for the hustlers and petty crime.

    Great job! Congratulations!
Allow me to suggest you to visit Nigeria and other neighboring West African countries. In order to understand Brazil and the unique spiritual magnitude of the state of Bahia and its formidable capital, Salvador, you have to pay a visit to those African countries which are the countries which sent the African slaves to Salvador. And then you will discover that the former slaves in Bahia returned to their countries of origin and became very respectable citizens on their hometowns, and these former slaves applied in their own home countries all the training they obtained in Bahia, and became master builders, master taylors, master cooks, master mechanics, etc.
You will be surprised by the love and respect those African countries nurture with regard to Salvador and Bahia.

@@thebrazilshow The 3 greatest religions on Earth, in its order of appearance, Judaism, Christianism and Islamism, all three have been born in Jerusalem. The three have a common sacred book, for the Jews the Torah, for the Christians the Bible and for the Muslims the Quran, but they all share the same common roots. And with the passing of many centuries the Jews, Christians and Muslims transformed Jerusalem, Rome and Mecca in sacred cities.
What is unique about Brazil and Brazilians, above all the Brazilians from Bahia, and specially from Salvador, is that they are transforming Salvador in Black Rome, or Black Mecca, so to speak. Salvador is the most important city on Earth that cultivates Afro-Brazilian religions. And Salvador has the biggest population outside Africa that speaks Yoruba. And every year the number of Africans who come to Salvador to pay homage to their African Gods, and Temples increases. And not to mention the attraction of Bahian food, and Bahian Carnival.
Please note that only Nigeria has more Africans than Brazil. Brazil is unique because it harbors the biggest African population outside Africa and within Africa itself, judged by the number of Afro-Brazilians, Brazil is the second biggest African country inside Africa.
But the reason I mentioned to you your visiting Mother Africa is because it will surprise you. All those West African countries have associations of former slaves who were slaves in Brazil and returned to their home countries as free men, and they all exercised a profound influence in their communities, becoming very respected citizens. These former slaves learned in Brazil trades which they did not have access to in Mother Africa, so these returnees arrived in their home countries as master builders, master taylors, master cooks, master mechanics, what have you, professional training which they could never have obtained in their home countries. So, when they arrived, they were hired by prominent citizens to build homes for them in the same style of the Brazilian colonial homes they were used to
build in Brazil. So, important cities of these African countries, Lagos, for instance, in Nigeria, have "Brazilian Districts", which they treasure and they are really very interesting to see.
Brazil is not responsible for the slavery in Brazil. The Portuguese are, but the Portuguese simply shrug their shoulders and avoid talking about this issue. But we Brazilians are the ones who have to deal with this huge problem and solve the zillions of racial, economic, social, ethical problems arising from those 388 years of slavery in Brazil (75% of all our history).
And what we Brazilians are doing is next to a miracle in the integration of races and diverse religions. There are problems still to solve, but we are advancing in the right direction, that is for sure. To tell you how close to us the past of slavery is, what separates me, a Caucasian Brazilian from slavery is only two generations. Meaning by that that my Greatgrand parents, both paternal and maternal, were slave-owners.
Again, only two generations separate me from the slavery period. It is too short a period to solve all the problems all those 388 years of slavery produced. But we are advancing.
But being Brazilian, being white, in 1985 I had to go to Lagos, and I was very much concerned with how the Nigerians would receive me, a bloody white man from a country that had enslaved their fellow country men for hundreds of years, and I was so much surprised by the attention, the caressing the welcomed me, and they insisted in taking me to the local association of former Brazilian slaves in Lagos, and I had the opportunity of meeting an old lady, she was approaching 100 in those days, and she spoke perfect Portuguese and were brought back to Nigeria by her mother who had been a slave in Brazil and had been freed, and the love with which she spoke about her Brazilian recollections, and I was very much moved by this.
And then some years later I was in Ivory Coast and I experienced the same event. They also had an association of former Brazilian slaves and they all love it.
There is a great Brazilian writer, Gilberto Freyre, who was indeed great, and who wrote a seminal book, "Casa Grande & Senzala" in which he explains in detail how slavery in Brazil was different from slavery in all other American countries. This book has been translated into English and to zilions of other languages, but I noticed that you do speak good Portuguese, so I would recommend you to try to read it in Portuguese. It will be a good way to hone your Portuguese which is aready very good.
Good luck and keep your good work!

When you read the Spanish records, they only brought the people from the surrounding Islands of Africa not the interior because of malaria. Moors brought slaves into South America and it's well known. But America has it's own indigenous black people, so we seem to forget about that.

    • @thebrazilshow

      Thanks for watching!
What about the Portuguese, and British who were the largest slave traders for Hundreds of years, and France before Spain entered the slave trade? As for the forgotten black people, What part of America - North, Central, South? Are you referring to the Olmec people? Black is not a race, so what ethnicity are these “black” people you’re referring to? A lot of people originally had dark skin. What did they look like, where did they live?
