I took my daughter to Greece last summer for her Sweet 16 birthday, in order to meet her relatives, cousins, etc. It was her first time there. In Athens, we took a cab for a 2 mile short trip and the cabbie ended up giving us a free tour (didn't charge us for that part) of Athens, all because I told him that I brought my daughter to Greece in order for her to trace her roots and heritage, and to see where her grandparents are from. I guess the cabbie was so impressed with my story, he said he was proud to have us in his car, and that wanted to take us on a tour. I got all misty eyed at his kindness, and tipped him well anyway.

man this is so true, as an italian i’ve also noted that 99% of greek taxi drivers have either lived some years somewhere in italy or have some close parents currently living in italy 🤣 you can’t imagine how much i love and admire greek approach to life.
My special favourite taxi driver called Nikos! When I had to go in hospital he was bringing me inside and waiting with me for the doctor, helped me with the language and drove me back like a closed friend... now he is my friend of course!
Many years ago, in the '80s, I begged a taxi driver to take me to central Athens from Vouliagmeni. He categorically refused. His wife, he said, was expecting him for lunch and he didn't want to be late. But, he said magnanimously, "My friend, I'll do you a favour. I'll take you to Glyfada. You can get a taxi to Athens from there." On the way to Glyfada, a very pretty young lady, all dolled up, hailed the cab. Driver to me: "should I pick her up?" Me: "up to you." Driver to the young lady: "where are you headed?" Young lady to driver: "central Athens." Driver: "What a coincidence... that's exactly where WE were going!" They don't make cab drivers like that anymore. They'll still talk your head off and expound with assurance on any topic. They're still omniscient in their own minds! But they've been tamed. They no longer decide where you're going.

Στα χρόνια του πασοκ οι ταρίφες έκαναν νόμιμα 2πλές και τριπλες κούρσες και πάλι δεν προλάβαιναν να πάρουν όλο τον κόσμο, είχε πολύ δουλειά,. Μπορεί να βαριόντουσαν ή να περίμεναν να έρθει κάποιο τρένο/λεωφορείο κτλπ για να παρουν πολλά άτομα και όχι μονο εσένα, οπότε σου έδιναν άκυρο. Φυσικά αν ήθελαν π.χ να πάνε μπουζούκια το βράδυ και εσύ πήγαινες λιγο πριν σχολάσουν, δεν θα σε έπαιρναν μακρινή κούρσα (μάλλον αυτό σχολιάζει στο βίντεο).
Εγώ βγήκα μια μέρα Πειραιά μπαίνω στο ταξί λέω Καλλιθέα πάμε ποοο τι ήθελα και το είπα έφαγε μια ξενερα μου λέει περίμενα όλο το βράδυ για Καλλιθέα ? ( Ήθελε μακρινή κούρσα) του λέω σταματα ανοίγω πόρτα βγαίνω και πηρα ηλεκτρικό 🙂
It used to be like this indeed with the old "guard". They have become exceptional professionals now. But...you always have moments of this from time to time.
The truth is that taxi drivers not going to where you want not because they live elsewhere but because they prefer another route coz of better potential profits :) Anyway that will happen only in case you pick them from the road and their flag indicates "not available" status. Picking them from taxi station will never deny any destination!
Really, go to Athens even in the Central Square, esp prior the crisis... It is very common taxi drivers to choose routes and avoid the low profit ones... If your fare would be the minimum, sth 3.5 € hmm taxi drivers would prompt u to one another..
You have to talk about the different types of taxi drivers too, the "Church" guy: his radio plays church music ALL. THE. TIME. loudly. Or the "i ask a lot of questions" guy, the name speaks for itself.
I've been into the "football" guy, I've been into the "Tragas" guy, I've been into the "smoking like a dragon type", I've even hit a gupsy hearing some uncomprohensible music, but I've never been into a "church" guy . You must have hit an exception!

Another added a “station charge.” Others just ignored the meter and made up a number. Eventually I had the attitude, “I’m going to get robbed; the only question is how and how much.”
The good thing now is that there are apps (ex. Beat) that you can use to call a taxi to go to your destination and it estimates the average cost you'll have to pay. Or if you have found a taxi and you don't want to call a new one through the app, you can ask the driver to give you an estimated price after you've checked the app to see if it worths the ride.
One time when I met an asshole taxi driver like that who made up a number for the toll and I complained about it, I asked him for the receipte. Suddenly he changed his attitude and lowered the price.
I remember getting a taxi from the old airport in Athens, returning with my ex wife and two young sons early one morning from England after my Grandmothers funeral , we told him where we lived Agii Anagirri he drove us to an off ramp and said there was a problem with the car . So he left us on the street and buggered off, thank God another taxi was going the same way as his passenger was going, and we got home safely .

One time in Athens I got into a cab, was a little drunk, and accidentally kinda slammed the door. "Please" the guy said. "Don't slam my door." I apologized sincerely and felt really band about it. At the end of the ride I gave him a little extra, said thank you very much, and accidentally slammed the door again.
Δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ όταν ξεμπαρκαρα απο τα καράβια στα 19 μου γύρισα στο νησί μου στην Κέρκυρα μετά απο έξι μήνες αεροπορικος φυσικά απο δουνκερκη μέσω Αθήνας. Είχα δυο τεράστιες βαλίτσες που με το ζόρι τις σήκωνα. Καλοκαίρι , τουρίστες στην ίδια πτήση , ουρά τα ταξί έξω απο το αεροδρόμιο. Οι μισοί ταξιτζήδες χωριανοί μου. Παρακαλούσα να με πάνε σπίτι μου μια απόσταση 6-7 χιλιόμετρα να δω την μάνα μου που τόσο μου είχε λήψει. Δεν με πήρε ΚΑΝΕΙΣ. Ακόμη νιώθω την κούραση που έφαγα στα 7 χιλιόμετρα με τις τεράστιες βαλίτσες. Απο τότε τους βλέπω διαφορετικά τους ταρίφες. Απλά μου.....πανα. Τώρα με την κρίση σου περνουν πι.πα για να σε πάρουν.
Happened to me years a few years ago. From stathmo larisis ( trena) ask for taxi to go the airport (elliniko) palia. I was turned down by two taxi drivers .
Greek taxi drivers (usually are funny and social people!) , if you asked them something, they reply you. "Don't feel shame to ask me, I know everything, I am better than google search machine". Hahahaha!! But the one ugly thing is, they over charge you the ride you take (few euros!!) does not matter where you go. At the end, they give you the sense, that they are more humans just like you.
I was in Athens once. I suddenly had stomach pains and i could barely walk, so we asked a taxi driver to take us to our hotel. He said " are you kidding me? The hotel isn't far away i'm not gonna move from here". We went out of the car again and when he saw me walking away in pain, he yelled at us to come back and bring us to the hotel. I was so upset that i yelled kolotaxitzides at him😂
i once took a cab from glyfada to moschato. The driver was albanian and we smoked 3 joints together (its a 13km drive), he rolled 2 of them, ran out, told him i was packing, we pulled over we just smoked that shit talked about crime and shit and then he dropped me off. That's the greek experience.
Ακριβώς. Βέβαια μετά το Covid κάπως μαζευτήκανε οι ταξιτζήδες. Παλιά, στα πρώτα χρόνια που ήμουν στην Ελλάδα (1995, 1996, μόνο που δεν μας έδερναν (που λέει ο λόγος). Πάντως καλύτεροι από τους ξενερωτους στην δυτική Ευρώπη. Τουλάχιστον μια κουβέντα για τον ΠΑΟΚ ή για τις γκόμενες την λεςμε τους δικούς μας 🇮🇹❤️🇬🇷

I remember getting a taxi from the old airport in Athens, returning with my ex wife and two young sons early one morning from England after my Grandmothers funeral , we told him where we lived Agii Anagirri he drove us to an off ramp and said there was a problem with the car . So he left us on the street and buggered off, thank God another taxi was going the same way as his passenger was going, and we got home safely .

It used to be like that years ago but now things have changed as we have taxi services as Uber and you can commute without being driven the way the taxi driver wishes! Well, chit chat is always a must! It's in our nature!

Αυτά ίσχυαν στους οδηγούς ταξί μέχρι το 2012- 13 άντε 2014 τώρα πλέον δεν υπάρχουν τέτοιες συμπεριφορές.Γιατι απλά στην Ελλάδα δεν υπάρχει πολύς κόσμος να μπορεί να πάρει ταξί.Τα ταξί πλέον δουλεύουν 70/100 με κανάλια.Βέβαια μπορεί να συμβεί ο οδηγός να πρέπει να παραδώσει οπότε θα ρωτήσει μπρος τα πού πας για να σε εξυπηρετήσει και να εξυπηρετηθεί και αυτός μια και πάτε μπρος την ίδια κατεύθυνση.Είμαι γυναίκα οδηγός ταξί συζητάω με συναδέλφους ξέρω ότι παλαιότερα τα πράγματα ήταν έτσι

One time in Athens I got into a cab, was a little drunk, and accidentally kinda slammed the door. "Please" the guy said. "Don't slam my door." I apologized sincerely and felt really band about it. At the end of the ride I gave him a little extra, said thank you very much, and accidentally slammed the door again.

Δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ όταν ξεμπαρκαρα απο τα καράβια στα 19 μου γύρισα στο νησί μου στην Κέρκυρα μετά απο έξι μήνες αεροπορικος φυσικά απο δουνκερκη μέσω Αθήνας. Είχα δυο τεράστιες βαλίτσες που με το ζόρι τις σήκωνα. Καλοκαίρι , τουρίστες στην ίδια πτήση , ουρά τα ταξί έξω απο το αεροδρόμιο. Οι μισοί ταξιτζήδες χωριανοί μου. Παρακαλούσα να με πάνε σπίτι μου μια απόσταση 6-7 χιλιόμετρα να δω την μάνα μου που τόσο μου είχε λήψει. Δεν με πήρε ΚΑΝΕΙΣ. Ακόμη νιώθω την κούραση που έφαγα στα 7 χιλιόμετρα με τις τεράστιες βαλίτσες. Απο τότε τους βλέπω διαφορετικά τους ταρίφες. Απλά μου.....πανα. Τώρα με την κρίση σου περνουν πι.πα για να σε πάρουν.

Greek taxi drivers (usually are funny and social people!) , if you asked them something, they reply you. "Don't feel shame to ask me, I know everything, I am better than google search machine". Hahahaha!!
But the one ugly thing is, they over charge you the ride you take (few euros!!) does not matter where you go. At the end, they give you the sense, that they are more humans just like you.
But Greece is different today, you can get a taxi from home with a an application..👍👍👍

I was in Athens once. I suddenly had stomach pains and i could barely walk, so we asked a taxi driver to take us to our hotel. He said " are you kidding me? The hotel isn't far away i'm not gonna move from here". We went out of the car again and when he saw me walking away in pain, he yelled at us to come back and bring us to the hotel. I was so upset that i yelled kolotaxitzides at him😂

i once took a cab from glyfada to moschato. The driver was albanian and we smoked 3 joints together (its a 13km drive), he rolled 2 of them, ran out, told him i was packing, we pulled over we just smoked that shit talked about crime and shit and then he dropped me off. That's the greek experience.

Ακριβώς. Βέβαια μετά το Covid κάπως μαζευτήκανε οι ταξιτζήδες. Παλιά, στα πρώτα χρόνια που ήμουν στην Ελλάδα (1995, 1996, μόνο που δεν μας έδερναν (που λέει ο λόγος). Πάντως καλύτεροι από τους ξενερωτους στην δυτική Ευρώπη. Τουλάχιστον μια κουβέντα για τον ΠΑΟΚ ή για τις γκόμενες την λεςμε τους δικούς μας 🇮🇹❤️🇬🇷
