Omg after 3 interviews and assessment tests, just got a job offer letter from a tech company here in NYC last Monday and I counter-offered for 10%... I was so nervous after she told me mmm not sure bit I'll ask and i’ll get back to you at the end of the week. I thought oh man I think I blew it! They're gonna rescind and that's it. I called and left a VM last Thursday to follow through, recruiter didn't replied. I couldn't sleep and so much anxiety. Next day Friday ( today) I called again around 11:30am. no answer and I left a voicemail. I was about to give up when the phone rang and voila! She apologized cuz of so many meetings! Whew! I got the job plus the offer I wanted. I was so happy and ecstatic! So People, negotiating your salary once u get an offer letter really works! Trust me! Oh, thank u guys for the advice and tips and pointers. It really helped me.
Thank you Madeline! I'm leaving higher education for the private sector and I was able to increase my starting pay by 3% for an entry level position. Your videos have helped me tremendously! We should collaborate on a Q&A on educators leaving education for the private sector!
I'm a teacher too, and adjusting to the business world and just trying for entry level positions as well but feel like I'm way more valuable than that!
@Scott Beck oh they completely understand, but some are too far in, or just don’t have the energy bandwidth after a day of teaching, managing supporting, mentoring teens to go explore all the roles in different industries, networking, job hunt and explaining your value to companies that don’t know the dynamic skill set and resilience that teachers have. Maybe newer teachers that haven’t gotten far on the pay scale can pivot and increase their salary, but mid career teachers it’s tough to swallow a pay cut and lower level responsibilities just to get into a new industry.

Excellent interview ! I suggest that you make a video on how to ask for a employment contract renewal in the presence of multiple generous job offers on the other side ! How to politely ask for a salary raise and leverage the whole situation ... Thanks a lot
Thanks for sharing your insights! I'd really appreciate Austin and your thoughts(in a future video, maybe?) on negotiating salary raise for a job you're working at that Austin talks about at 45:57 . Beyond having stats and making the case for ROI, I'd like to know more - like how should one time it? When's a good time to start setting expectations with your manager? How common are out of cycle increases and should you bring up that possibility? What's a good way to respond when you do not like the number you're given in your performance review? Also for 54:58 - I understand and appreciate why it would be disappointing for the company. I'm curious to know your take on the anecdotal wisdom for why this isn't good for the candidate - that the industry is a small community and reneging on offers you've accepted may hurt you somewhere and sometime in the future. Have you witnessed such situations/examples in your experience?
I had a hiring manager tell me that just based on my resume she won't be able to afford me, but wanted to give it a shot anyway. That left me very confused. Parking in major cities is a great negotiating option also - cost can be in thousands, annually.
@@joshlanders Started working this week. Didn't dare negotiate since their offer was already 50% higher than my expected salary. The HR also specifically stated that it was their best offer.
Great convo. I’m in the negotiation process now. Question: how much is too much to negotiate up from the initial offer? I want to negotiate up 20% up from my initial offer. Should I go in with a number at 25% to be able to hopefully meet closer to the 20% number?
Thank you so much for this insight, Madeline and Austin! QQ for you and/or the community: Do you have any suggestions on how to approach an offer that is above the market average yet is significantly lower than your previous salary in the same role? I cannot tell if my hesitation around this is due to a subconscious fear of the offer being rescinded, or if it is something that is worth going for. This is my dream company, yet don't want to get short-changed. Thank you so much!!
I wish I had watched this and other videos before now. I had a phone interview yesterday and the last question was "What are your salary requirements"? I was not expecting salary to be brought up at all on an initial phone screen from a recruiter. I told them the salary I was making when I was laid off! I wish I had given a range and one that was higher than what I was being paid. I think I have room for recovery though if I am considered for the position and move on the interview with the hiring manager. I am going to watch many of these videos to prepare myself.
What about healthcare ? I’ve have yet to see negotiating power in healthcare, as far as hospitals with non-doctor but still clinical practitioner roles. Any insight in this area?
Thank you very much for your wonderful insights on salary negotiation! I´m right in the middle of salary negotiation and this gives me great tools for the call on Monday, Dec 28th.
Very professional Madeline. But this felt like pulling teeth at times, I would have disqualified him after the 2nd evasive answer🥴. Is this really how negotiations go?
Hi. I’ve been watching your videos and I want you to know that I really appreciate all the valuable Information I’ve learned from you. Is there a way to have a private conversation in regards to a current offer that I must negotiate for? I am in Los Angeles. Thank you.
I'd love to know if either of you have any resources specific to the EU market? I'm currently interviewing for a position in Austria. As a U.S. expat, it's a completely different ball game over there.

Hey @madeline Mann. This is a great insightful session. Thank you for putting this up. How can you politely ask an interviewer about the expected salary for your role if the interviewer failed to made mention of it? I would appreciate your response.
So if you get the revenue by employee, is there a baseline math where we can argue like a engineer should be at say 65% of that number, a salesperson should be at 75% that number, etc?
Thank you for this! Interesting conversation to be a part of and learn from. I have found that with every application I have filled out they require one whole number and do not allow a range.
Hello from Sunny California! What if you've already given a range once pressed in the initial interview but are noticing based on job description and difficulties the comps are really much higher? Is it too late to negotiate higher on the back end? Specifically, if they are willing to offer what you initially asked for?
What if a job average that is posted is one that is including sales. I have applied for a job that has a base salary of 15.84 an hour but if you hit goal it is 50k. What stinks is seeing all of these average amounts that people are paid and I am almost certain that folks are including what they make with the sales added in to their total. What info do you have regarding this? And how to research?
What if the recruiter asked me what my current salary is? I wasn't aware of the California labor code 432.3. Apparently it's a violation to prompt a candidate to disclose involuntarily of current/past salary. And they can't use it to create an offer. He told me 10k range above my current range. But the average in the employer provided range on LinkedIn is actually 20k higher. I just finished panel interviews but just want to be ready. Some ppl lose their initial offers trying to negotiate. Tread softly. Lol
How out of touch is this lady about an office location. Window offices are highly coveted in companies and they are not going to put a new hire by the window when someone with seniority who has been waiting for a window spot to open up. I mean that might happen. But for someone to ask for that just shows how out of touch they are have probably been working at home next to their window for too long. She makes other points that send you down a bad road also. And where is the info on how to double your salary? That’s absurd!
I enjoyed the program, but the title was clickbait. You guys did NOT tell us how to double our salary offer. Maybe on rare occasions, the approaches you describe would have that result, but in general, no, these approaches won’t do that.
