    UPDATE TO THIS VID!
    GETTING THE MOST FROM CREATINE (2013 FOLLOW UP!!!)
    This simple vid I did showing pre mixing creatine a good idea, has gotten more traffic and discussion than any vid I have done, and still shows up regularly. So, let me explain with more details and self corrections from the criticisms I get gotten...
    Yes, I may have over stated the importance of it in the vid, but, the fact is, creatine must be solubilized before it will get absorbed. There's a number of papers confirming that unless there's another route of absorption for CM I'm not aware of... It will either get solubilized in digestion or it can be done first in the glass.
    People who get stomach problems from creatine have been told to pre solubilize their creatine for decades. For people who get stomach upset, non responders (approx 30% of users) they may get better responses from fully dissolving, but that's hypothesis on my part.
    I can say, thousands of people have reported the stomach issues and bloating they experienced were gone once they pre solubilized their creatine.
    Clearly, some of the creatine not dissolved in the glass will be made soluble and absorbed and I should have been clearer about that in the vid, but it's well established in human digestion that compounds with poor solubility are often poorly absorbed. It's also going to be dose dependent (large amounts of CM are more likely to not get solubalized and absorbed, causing stomach issues, etc) while smaller amounts, less so.
    At this point, I tell people If one has gotten good response from not fully dissolving, don't sweat it, but it's my opinion that fully dissolving may optimize absorption for some, reduces waste, may improve effects in non responders, and will reduce stomach discomfort in those who experience it with creatine.
    It's also going to be individual. Back when loading was all the rage, some got killer cramps, the runs, and a bloated stomach from those mega doses, some had no issues. That was due to the hypotonic effects of large doses of CM.
    Full Details on chemicals found in creatine:
    www.brinkzone.com/articles/wha...
    What I am about to tell you is not going to make me a very popular person with many supplement manufacturers. In fact, some of them are going to be down right pissed off at me. On the other hand, some of them are going to be happy someone spilled the beans and told the truth. Finally, some of them will be totally unaware of this information and will be shocked when they read it.
    Basically, I fully expect this article to cause a sh*% storm that will reverberate throughout the supplement industry. The only people who I know are going to be happy about this article is the consumer, but I am getting ahead of myself. As we all know, creatine is one of the best bodybuilding supplements ever discovered. It increases strength, lean body mass, and, to a lesser extent, endurance.
    If that were not enough, it's relatively cheap to boot! What more could we ask for from a supplement? When creatine was first introduced it was sort of pricey, but no one really cared because it worked so well. As time went on and more companies began selling creatine, the inevitable price war began and prices came down.
    At that point creatine was only being produced by a few companies, so creatine was basically creatine and the price was the only real consideration. As is typical of the market place, once creatine became big business, several new manufacturers popped up and it became no longer a price war as much as a quality war.
    The expression "creatine is creatine" no longer holds true. More on that shortly.

    Will, quick creatine question for you: I know you recommend to use warm (vs. cold) water when mixing creatine powder for better dilution results. I always wonder whether using near-boiling temperature hot water (e.g., when making coffee, tea, etc.) would have any degrading or negative effect on creatine. What's your take on this? Thanks in advance.

    ummm... the digestive system is full of liquid, mostly water, and at approx 98.6 degrees... and it's being agitated constantly. Therefore any undissolved creatine ingested would dissolve within a few minutes in the gut. This is pretty simple stuff.

  • @pieterwahyudi

    Mr. Will Brink, this is a very good idea to make it CM dissolved since CM itself was non soluble. But I'm scared of CM converts into creatinine (which means it's not useful anymore) when thrown by the hot/warm water, does this case make sense? Thank you before.

    Your digestive system is filled with warm, water-based liquids. Some creatine may pass through you, but it is not because it wasn't dissolved in warm water. I do completely agree that fully dissolving it will help prevent stomach upset, but I do not agree that dissolving it fully before consuming has any effect on how much gets absorbed by the body... or even that it really matters if it does or not. The truth of the matter is that 5g/day is what we all take, and that's more than enough to make up for any difference in absorption that may be caused by how it is dissolved. If you take it with the scoop and drink method, you are still getting more than enough to fully supplement your creatine. I think this video is more about helping out people who have difficulty digesting creatine monohydrate. If you can kick back a scoop and drink it down with water, you almost certainly still get plenty of creatine absorbed into your muscles.

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink  9 лет назад +4

      Turner Pendergrass Yes, those are good points. If you see the text below the and linked in the vid, you'll see I say essentially the same thing. Will cure GI problems, effects on absorption. As I have said over and over to others who have commented here, if the scoop and drink method, etc is working for you and no GI issues, keep doing that. If not, pre dissolving will solve GI issues and *****may**** assist in other areas, but further research is needed. The pioneers of creatine reasearch (Greenhalf et al who I can talked with personally) all dissolved creatine in hot tea or coffee in the studies they did. Later studies did not.

      Teammamba4life 20g per day is a waste of money.

    • @migueche20
      @migueche20 9 лет назад

      Teammamba4life Well it depends how much muscle you have for creatine to be absorbed. Think of a sponge, it will only hold a certain amount of liquid. Your muscles functions like a sponge in this case. After a certain amount of creatine is absorbed it will take no more. Excess creatine will just be filtered through your kidneys & liver and then are excreted out. So if you have a lot of muscle, let's say 230 lb's with 12% body fat. Which is freaking huge, you would need around 8-10 grams of creatine. Anything more is just not absorbed then thus wasted. Also, you don't wanna be wasting too much either. Not just because it's a waste of money, but because it also puts a strain on your liver & kidneys. It probably won't do any permanent damage in a couple of years, but if they are filtering an excess of 15 grams a day additionally to all the other stuff they filter (let's hope you're not drinking also) it will take a toll within the coming decade. Just be careful bro. Don't OD because you think more is better. It's a common misconception. Lift on bro.

    • @Teammamba4life
      @Teammamba4life 9 лет назад

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink  8 лет назад

      +Gustavo Porto You make excellent points, which is frankly nice to see considering some of the comments people post here. Here goes:
      "agree with you that compounds with poor solubility are are often poorly
      absorbed it doesn't prove that CM will be poorly absorbed. I also
      completely agree with you that the absorption is dose dependent."
      Agreed! I don't have data showing CM specifically is poorly absorbed, and made it clear I overstated that aspect in the text. What I did say in the text was, pre dissolving does eliminate grastric upset. and **may** improve absorption in some people.
      "I was wondering since creatine is one of the most studied supplements
      out there, shouldn't there be a study saying that ingesting dissolved
      creatine over non dissolved creatine increases absorption rate?"
      Agreed, such a study would be interesting to see, but does not exist. What is interesting to note, is all early studies showing benefits pre dissolved it in hot coffee or tea due to its poor solubility. When did they stop pre dissolving it in studies? Im not sure. I'd actually like to do an analysis on that some day, but time had prevented it to date.
      "Also, I have read some studies showing that creatine is more soluble in
      an acidic solution instead of the relatively neutral pH of tap water. If
      that's the case, wouldn't the creatine be more soluble in a mixture of
      water and stomach acid?"
      Yes, and note what I repeat to others in the comments on this page: If CM woks for you in the manner you're taking it, keep doing it. If CM gives you gastric upset and or you get no effect, try pre dissolving it. Note, I am not dogmatic in the least not ever claimed it's of no value when not pre dissolved. I do feel however that it's likely the superior way to ingest is via hot liquids per early studies. I add it to my Bomb Proof Coffee recipe, which BTW, is the chit.
      "While we're at it, If I drink room temperature water, wouldn't the water
      just gradually increase to my body temperature while in my stomach?"
      Yes, see above. If no GI issues, and it works for you, carry on. In the stomach however, some will make it to the lower GI
      and can cause issues. It's hypotonic, and will draw water into the GI to dissolve it for absorption, which is likley why some claim it bloats their stomach. Again, will be dose and person dependent.
      "Thank you for replying and answering all of my questions, I am not
      trying to discredit your video, I'm just trying to find some peer
      reviewed proof that backs up your claims."
      Thank you for taking the time to ask logical Qs and make logical observations. Note also my responses to others on the topic. There's also a metric TON of info on all things creatine on BrinkZone and plenty if studies posted and discussed there.

    Is the same thing true for Glutamine? Im having a hard time dissolving my glutamine all the way in cold water. Is it not useful unless it is fully dissolved like the creatine and if i put it in hot tea will that mess up the glutamine?

      Vectorp47 Their effect is to make it soluble and absorb it in most people, and or cause GI problems in others. See text linked in the vid for more info.

    the creatine monohydrate Im taking says to mix a heaping tablespoon in a a cup of fruit juice. Is it better to use water instead? I drink a crap ton of water throughout the day, roughly a gallon to a gallon and a half, and have noticed gains. My next question is, whether it be fruit juice or water, can I premix say A gallon or so with Creatine and drink it throughout the week? That way I know its dissolved for sure!

    Thank you sir! This woked for me. Though to get it to dissolve so fast I have to make the water at a temperature I cant drink for 5 minutes or so. Is it okay to let it sit that long? Also I drink creatine every morning and I workout every other day around noon. Good/bad? I am very lightweight and looking to get bigger.

    Thanks for this vid, today is the first day i got the powder and i mixed it in cold water and could still see the particles very clearly till the end and i've had a stomach ache ever since, I found this vid and did it again by diluting it in a small amount of boiling water then adding room temp water and mixing till the water looked totally clear. Thanks again.

    Shouldn't the internal temperature of your body (which is around 98.5 F°) be "warm" enough to dissolve the creatine regardless of the temperature the mixing liquid is?

    So I had a friend who is somewhat knowledgable tell me years ago that if I took my creatine mono (creapure) with a acidy drink like orang juice it would help my body absorb it better or something along the lines of this. True or false & why please?

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink  9 лет назад

      Emilio Casados False. Grape juice was often recommend due to it's high glucose content (for a fruit juice) which can improve absorption but that's fallen out of favor and is not really needed. High acid drinks are a negative to creatine as it speeds up conversion to creatinine.

    • @willbrink

      Some of the creatine will fall out of solution once chilled down and settle on the bottom, general rule is to drink sooner the better. In solution you will get creatine to creatinine conversion over time.

    im a little confused. when you supersaturate a solution like the glass on the left (using hot water) once that water returns to room temperature the creatine will re solidify. on the other hand, if you used the argument, " the water never returns to room temperature because you drink so it becomes your core body temperature", you could also say that drinking the glass on the left would end up supersaturating because it would be raised to the core body temperature once consumed. please explain why im wrong because i believe you know what youre talking about more so than i do.

    • @brianm840

      No guarantee if you drink undissolved powder in cold water that it will fully dissolve in the stomach once drunken since it still takes some stirring even in warm water. Also the water may exit your stomach faster than the time it takes to dissolve the powder.

    I appreciate your video on using warm water to dissolve creating. Previously I suffered great intestinal distress from creatine, regardless of formulation. After using creatine monohydrate, dissolving in warm water, and waiting about a minute to dissolve (just like you show in your video) I have no problems now and am enjoying the strength benefits if creatine. I make sure I don't drink the undissolved creatine at the bottom of the glass. Thank you!

  • @danwat1234

    I think I'm a creatine non-responder, as in, years ago I had a 500g tub of creatine monohydrate and mixed in about 5 to 10 grams into a cold glass of water or maybe just put it in my mouth and washed it down, and didn't notice any difference in strength/recovery/energy. But now I just ordered 200g creatine HCi to see how it works for me. If I get a response then I may go get 1000g micronized creatine for about $18 shipped from Amazon and make sure it's fully dissolved.
    Is micronized a lot easier to dissolve or is warm water still really needed? Then compare to HCI? Thanks

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink  9 лет назад

      danwat1234 HCL strong point is improved solubility, so no, unlikely to benefit from pre dissolving in hot liquid. Micronized does mix faster, but it's not a big deal really. HCL is not a scam like many monohydrate alternatives promising to be 8,982,934 times better than monohydrate, but not worth the extra $$$. • @TheWhale1337
      @TheWhale1337 9 лет назад

      danwat1234 The temperature of your stomach is around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37.5 degrees Celsius) with a pH level of around 2. Once the creatine reaches your stomach, whatever small amount that wasn’t already dissolved in the water will then be broken down further through the body’s natural digestive processes in an environment that is already very hot and extremely acidic.

    I recently started using creatine and have noticed I'm not sweating very much during my workout. Normally I'm drenched after a workout now I hardly break a sweat. I drink tons of water and my urine is always clear which makes me think I'm getting enough hydration. I'm working out harder than ever but very little sweat. Is there a connection to this and creatine? When I google it all I get are stories of excessive sweating due to creatine.

    I starting taking creatine a week ago, I take 5 grams mix half grape juice and water in a 8 ounce glass b4 I work out. Then I drink a protein shake after with 5g's in that.
    The b4 workout that I drink I stir in for like 30secs and drink it and its been working fine for me. So I don't know if you let it dissolve completely, that it works any better. Also WillB if you reply to this.... Im not clicking the annotation that pops up for more information, say something other then that.
