Creatine Does NOT Cause Hair Loss

  • Creatine is a very safe and well-studied supplement but there are lot of people who believe that it causes hair loss.
Well, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't! Or at least I'm here to try and convince you that it doesn't.
But in order to do that we have to go all the way back to one small study which seems to have confounded and confused a lot of people.
This small study showed that rugby players who were using creatine experienced an increase in their testosterone to DHT level.
And this small study was enough to convince people that creatine might cause hair loss through the increase of DHT.
Nevermind the fact that no other studies have been able to replicate the results and nevermind the fact that no studies show that creatine increases testosterone, some people still believe that creatine causes hair loss.
But all existing evidence at this point suggests that it does NOT cause hair loss in any way shape or form.
But research isn't everything, because there are still anecdotal reports that it might.
So what should you do? If you are seriously concerned about hair loss from creatine then avoiding it if you have androgenetic alopecia (male patterned baldness) is probably your best bet.
But if you don't, then I don't see any issue in taking creatine.

    Good points in this video!
I did some research on “creatine and acne side effects” and there’s a few RUclips videos that made me change my mind.
For some women and men, creatine can raise your DHT and testosterone levels by 60% which could then trigger hormonal breakouts because it makes your body produce more sebum oils.
What are your thoughts on this? I also heard it could be the brand you are taking. Possibly cheaper brands with fillers could cause this issue.
Everyone is different so this may not be a problem for some people…but should be a caution for those of us who are prone to acne and have hormonal issues.

I took creatine for just over a week and from what was 2-3 hairs when combing through hair with hands, quickly went to 10-20 hairs and hairs all over my pillow. I kept my previous training and everything the exact same. Just too coincidental to think it's not speeding up the process.

@@Tate525 I am just saying my case, my hair was shedding a fair bit more after using creatine for just over a week. I then stopped and after 4-5 days, the hair shedding has gone back to the ‘only couple of strands every so often’. I may genuinely try again soon to see if it happens again, it did rapidly improve my size and weight

If you have MPB your hair follicles are more susceptible to the mild increase in DHT, which might accelerate hair fall.

It doesn't affect kidneys if you drink adequate amounts of water, but the link between creatine and hairloss if you have the male pattern baldness gene is the most proven link, just because there isn't a supplement company sponsoring studies on this topic, doesn't mean it does not exist.

I've read hundreds of comments online detailing people's experience of losing hair due to creatine. What annoys me, is guys like Childs say "There is no evidence". Why are the numerous experiences expressed online NOT EVIDENCE? I believe they are the BEST evidence! These "Doctors" on RUclips spouting "No Evidence" are frauds. Likely paid by Creatine makers to produce these videos.
