For anyone interested. I glued a teeny tiny "super magnet" available in big box hardware stores on the clasp and then a small metal washer on the side of one of the water vessels. when not in use, the clasp is securely attached to the water container. Works like a charm! ON earlier versions, the pans don't have the sticky stuff on the bottom. Just put a little glue dot on , or even a smear of rubber cement and they will stay firm.
I have this pallet and I LOVE IT!!!! Honestly, I usually just put all my goodies in one side and water in the other. I know it is better to have two cups of water but I'm just lazy that way. Oddly enough I would rather get up and get fresh water. Anyway, when it is all assembled I kinda love just carrying it by the pallet in the middle. It is so sturdy and always a place for all my things. I am a size16-18 woman but it fits my knee beautifully! I also extended the pallet just a bit by using the very small mixing trays, that I don't find real useful, to put a dot or two of my Dr. PH Martin's concentrated water colors on. Let them try over night and they work beautifully! Thanks for all you do Lindsay!! Love, love, LOVE your videos!!!
I appreciate that you use the item before you provide your review. This was the tipping point for me to finally go ahead and make a purchase. I used your link and your coupon code. Thank you so much for this! Another great review Lindsay. I love your channel in general. One of my favorites to be honest. You are an engaging, knowledgeable, humble and truly talented woman. I appreciate all that you do to provide your channel content for all of us lucky viewers!!
Great to hear your insight on this. I've noticed that Jackson's half pans do fit, they stick out slightly more, but the palette can still close just fine. Schmincke pans don't fit at all though.
Good information, my paint holder consists of a metal Altoid mint container and a dentine gum holder where the tub paint is placed. Than stick into metal holder. Jennifer
loved your review! I filled my palette last night based on the color recommendations of Denise at in liquid color and Jane blundell's web site. Thanks Lindsay!
I ordered two different portable palettes from Amazon. I actually ordered two different ones. One was about $10, and the other was $14 with little empty half pans. I think one will be for landscape colors.
Love to review, Lindsay! I'll be traveling to Hawaii in the next few months and I was interested in knowing what your tropical colors would be that you would take along. Thank you for everything!
I bought the portable Palette. I think it's good for a beginner like me. Just saw on another channel where they modified it by making the mixing with the 3 big wells. Taking s Swiss Army Knife and heating the Palette and removing the plastic to makr 3 wells
Gorgeous paintings Lindsay and your portrait of your daughter is stunning...OMG, she is so beautiful! I bought the portable palette when they first came out (it didn't come with the rubber band). I can attest to the fact that they are very sturdy so as you say, if anyone thinks it may be of use to them when travelling, then as far as quality goes it's great. Love your product review videos Lindsay b/c I know you give an honest review! TFS
I got one last year and really like it except the pans didn't have the sticky dots. I cold have stuck down the pans but decided to not use the loose pans. I love the little brush also, plus a bit bigger brush. Mine didn't have the elastic band either. I bought mine while it was in the trial period so I didn't pay the price you mentioned, I paid about $20-21 for it, so i think that was a good price for the first trial ones. Thank for the nice review, & I'm happy you like it I think whoever invented it did a great job, then fixed the few problems it had after the trial period. (my half pans wouldn't stay in the little squares when i put my brush into the pan the whole pan came out) I just added the paint directly into the squares. When i use it this summer I'm hoping I wont be sorry for not being able to switch out the pans. It was a disappointment like you said when other pans wouldn't fit. Thanks this was fun to see your opinion of it. I got mine from Sharon Cullen when she reviewed hers during their trial period, so thats how I also got my prototype.
Hi Ms. Lindsay! Great tutorial. I do love the travel palette, and think it would be beneficial. The fact that you cannot interchange the pans, and it doesn't have an attached locking closure are design flaws. Sending out rubber bands is not a good solution in my eyes. But I love the water containers too. I always take my prima confections and or koi or my Cotman travel palettes., Lately...that's what I use when I'm home too. Don't think I'd make the purchase until those two problems of pans and closure were corrected. But that's just my opinion. Have a great day!!! Would love to see your vacation paintings in tutorials.
after so many years, i'm just NOW considering buying this palette. thank you sooo much for the info on which brand half pans fit. that's extreeemely helpful! thank you for your thorough review as always lindsay~ :D
Hullo Lindsay, I was not looking for this review but it popped up on my homepage today! I believe I’ve seen a review after this with the potable painter. These people have made new quarter pans to fit in the brush area? I just knew you would not give a bad review or a bad review video. I love seeing you be so consistent and just as bright and lovely as ever! You are simply luckier than me, I have broken several plastic palettes over the years so I use mostly the metal ceramic coated ones. I have seen several artists I follow on RUclips use the portable painter palette and I am always just a little bit envious, but I just don’t think it would hold up for me I would hate to spend money on it and break it first time out! Thanks again for a wonderful review and sharing of your beautiful and awe inspiring paintings. Ok now for something a little more recent!
Great review! I LOVE the paintings you did and the one of your daughter is amazing! You are such a talent, I'm so glad you share that talent with all of us! TFS
I love this palett. Also pans from really cheap watercolor/ watercolor pencil set at ac Moore fit as well. ( I buy these, take out pans for painters palett, use watercolors pencils for beginning sketches in field- if I loose one I don't care. With 55% members coupon I get 12 pencils and 12 empty pans for $6.)
great video when they I'm really thinking about getting one of those portable painters I really like them they're very Innovative but it did look like the paint beaded up at least the red and the blue
You can get the W&N pans that fit from Jackson's on Amazon and they don't cost too much. There were some others that I kind of jammed in there but they don't fit as well. I got mine earlier when the cost was lower (I try to toss that piece in the cup too). Nice pictures!
do you mean you put it in the cup with your paint water? On the pans, are they empty? I ordered my pans from Jacksons via amazon and did not see any but the one size.
I don't think I do but I think the spin doctor does on his blog, let me check... OK here is janes neutrals and there is a link to the brights in this post too: www.the-spin-doctor.co.uk/2017/01/jane-davenport-petite-palette_17.html and he has youtube reviews of Prima but prima does not reveal its pigment info so I am not sure if he gave a pigment analysis: ruclips.net/channel/UCyzJ-NaAUn3PWcsk2YFXSPAsearch?query=prima I trust Rich on all thinkgs pigment:)
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and gift. I love the picture of your daughter you did a great job. We are going up to Grand Portage Mn to paint in 2 weeks I have to say I am looking forward to it. Have a great night.
Can you toss the clasp into the clean water well while you paint? It shouldn't rust or anything if you don't leave it in to long. If the clasp is aluminum it won't rust at all. I appreciate the honest appraisal. Thanks!
I do wish they had included somewhere to put the little clasp such as the water container or had a place where you could slide it on either side of the water cups. Cause i'm always paranoid that i'm going to lose a small but important thing that I need to keep when traveling.
Love the review and I'm thinking of purchasing one. Is it possible for you to list the color names, cobalt blue etc. I use I think colors close to what you have in your travel pallet?
Quin rose Pyrrol Scarlet (or cad red) Hansa Yellow Light Gamboge Pthalo Blue Ultramarine (above colors from daniel smith essential set) Olive Green (sennelier) Green Gold (Qor) Cobalt Teal (Qor) Burnt Umber (Schminke) Yellow ochre (W&N) Diox. Violet
Lindsay, thanks you so much for such a detailed review. The paintings you showed us are just beautiful. I am anxiously waiting for my portable painter to arrive. I do have a question for you. You had, I believe 3 or 4 yellows in your palette. I think I recognized lemon, cad yellow, gamboge (maybe), and yellow ochre. Could you please confirm what those yellows are, and why you have so many in your palette? Thanks very much.
+Beth B hansa yellow light, gamboge and yellow ochre. A warm and cool primary for mixing and yellow ocher is a warm earthy color to temper other colors.
You're going to make me go broke Sistah! Love this travel palette and you know I'm going to have to order it. grrr. But my Birthday is coming up next month, so it will probably be my gift to myself.
New to watercolors - question - Why do you add water to the pan then put the paint on the plastic if you are not mixing colors? Just wondering if you can put water in the pan and then go directly onto the paper... Thx!
Maureen Nevers You totally can, that's what I do on the very rare occassion that I use watercolors. I think it's so you can get an idea of the intensity of the color before putting it down on the paper, or to get rid of some of it before putting it on the paper.
I use a palette to add more water to make it do what I want. I feel like without doing so it looks like I am using dead markers and can't get the smoother flow I like. Though that might have more to do with being relatively new and super cheap paint.
Ahhhh! ANYTHING that makes plein aire painting easier while avoiding waterbrushes is a HUGE advance for me! I love THIS! I appreciate the honest review. Thanks so much for your time, talent and efforts 😁
thanks for the review and the link. i've been looking for on of these. a while back there was only 1 place that carried them and i think they were the folks that made them. ha ha, that's the same site.
Last year they released slim pans to go in the brush area and they are great! You can get 3 single or 3 divided pans in there. I put 3 divided pans in mine and have been using them for a year and they are wonderful. Great for flat brushes!
So Lindsay, how often did you have to practice the intro before you got it without stumbling over all the Ps in the product name? LOL Great review though. I'm on the fence about buying it for the reasons you mentioned; love its design but for the price I'd want to be able to buy additional paint pans and brushes for more flexibility and to extend its use.
Hi Lindsay! Do you know where I can buy extra empty half pans for this? I have a bunch of meeden half pans but they don't fit. I looked on the website and it says they sell the half pans but then there is nowhere to click on to buy them. I live in Canada if that makes a difference.
I don't know of empty ones but winsor & Newton pans fit if you can find a good price on the colors you want. I also bought a cheap palette on amazon by "Jerry q" and it was 18 colors for $12. I removed the paint and used the pans in mu portable painter and I filled the empty palette as it was divided and sturdy with holbein. Hope that helps.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks for your help. I ended up contacting Mr. Padden at Portable Painter. He was really helpful. The shipping to Canada was much more reasonable than I thought.
Ah, that's what it is for. But I would like more mechanical solution, where the clasp isn't removable. But then, it may be sticking out so, that is badly on way. But it's great to hear, that they are trying to fix the issue, not many companies do that :)
I love that idea with the magnet and washer, thank you!

Schmincke pans don't fit at all though.
I just ordered this, used the coupon code, and its also free shipping, in the US. So, it is only 26.95! whoo hoo! thanks Lindsay!
Could you use a velcro dot on the clasp & on one of the mixing trays to keep from losing it?
Good information, my paint holder consists of a metal Altoid mint container and a dentine gum holder where the tub paint is placed. Than stick into metal holder. Jennifer

Love the painting you did of the palette Lindsay! It's so pretty!
Thanks Denise!
I bought the palette for 5.00 from Etsy immediately. I am a palette addict, lol. This is the best thing I've seen for plein air and travel.
Great product review. Would you be doing the orange flower as a quick tutorial?? It would make a cool card.
Great review. Do a tutorial on the berry.

I love mine, but I agree you should be able to buy extra empty pans and a larger size brush, like a 6/4 on the ends!

I would love to see a tutorial of the mountain laurel. The leaves are so beautiful!

Your watercolors are lovely!
Lindsay, I read on either the site, or Indiegogo, that the reason the paint doesn't bead, is that the palette is sprayed with a light enamel coating.
after so many years, i'm just NOW considering buying this palette. thank you sooo much for the info on which brand half pans fit. that's extreeemely helpful! thank you for your thorough review as always lindsay~ :D

I would be too. Though I have heard that people have put a tiny magnet and something metal to help.
That's why there's a band that it "hugs" on to :)
Thanks, Jordan enjoyed it.
Great video Lindsay! 😁
Hi Lindsay, just curious - whatever happened to "ask a crafter". I miss seeing Kathy and Lorraine and the big fishbowl of questions.
I have the original version. he's Made some great upgrades
I bought this pallette but I haven't used it yet.. I thought it was a good investment for travel. Dana

it looks good and will look into it, better than my haphazard outdoor painting kit LOL
I just use a large plastic container for water.
Love this!!
I don't kayak, so I don't need a tiny palette. I would rather bring an extra chair to set my big palette.
It does not hold some half pans? Not good.
no, it will not hold most infact, I testedall the brands I had and it only fit W&N and Rembrant (kinda) and the Jerry Q art halfpans
Woohoo she did a botanical :P
I'm too worried, that I will lost that little clasp. It seems like design flaw... I hope there will be second version with better design.
CyaneInk Art that's why they include the rubber band now...just so you can stick the clasp under it. That's how they fixed the original design flaw. 😉
Ah, that's what it is for. But I would like more mechanical solution, where the clasp isn't removable. But then, it may be sticking out so, that is badly on way. But it's great to hear, that they are trying to fix the issue, not many companies do that :)
Product too expensive. I still enjoy using my Koi pocket sketch box.
interesting product...way too expensive.
You paint from a KAYAK?? Oh Lindsay....
Yes and the ice is out in the lake! The air temp is still mighty cold tho, probably gotta wait a couple more weeks:(
