Use Rose Water and Vitamin E oil. Put it in a Spray Bottle and mist it daily. Don't use a Clarifying Shampoo often bc it will dry it out. Try a Moisturizing Shampoo.
This is my very first sit down video and I didn't realize how much I had zoomed in. Apologies for being so close to the camera, for all the ums, uhhs, and lip smacking. And also for all the hair touching!!!
Should see my vids sometime....I don't edit. I've sneezed, burped, ...flat out lost my thoughts in the middle of speaking etc. but guess what....thats me... Anything different would be fake. You ....are real and it shows. Real keeps folks coming back.
Im 3 1/2 years into my loc journey. One thing I learned is not to put conditioner or oils in my hair in the beginning before it locs. Because I did I had a lot of buildup in the locks in the back. I would suggest you spray your hair with water that has a few drops of essential oils in once a week. Use a satin scarf at night and don’t combine any locs until you pass the teenage stage and see the real size of your locs.
Hello I have viewed all your sisterlock videos and I have decided to DYI my hair myself. Yours turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing your greatly detailed videos, they are awesome.
Congrats on being officially Loced ! I can't believe you had the patients to do both you and your moms hair. I fell in love with sisterlocs/microlocs too but it's so expensive so I decided to plait my hair myself to start it off. My hair was really flat in the beginning put trust me it'll get fuller in time. You said your hair is really dry. When you spray your hair with regular water it'll eventually evaporate. That's why it's so dry. So ppl usually Seal in the moisture by adding an oil on top. Since your hair is fresh it will slip if you add oil to it. I suggest you buy Rose water with glycerin. Spraying that in your hair should help you out.
Katya Sandrine no problem. The time will go by fast. I'm about to be 1 year in. Are you going to go to a salon to get your hair maintained or are you going to do it yourself ?
Try mixing olive oil, camellia oil, castor oil, avocado oil, or sweet almond oil to a moisturizing shampoo (aphoghee deep moisture shampoo, Kerasilk moisture shampoo, aestelance MC shampoo, shu uemura urban moisture shampoo, or any moisture shampoo that you like. Mix the oil with the shampoo into a pinch bowl and apply the mix directly to the scalp with a color/tint/application brush. Apply on dry hair. This is to ensure that the oil/shampoo mix is going to grab any dry scalp and/or lubricate dry itchy scalp. Use pads of fingertips to scrub/massage scalp and run the product down the hair in one direction. Add a little water onto scalp, but don’t rinse out completely. Allow the shampoo to emulsify and continue to shampoo your scalp and hair. The oil/shampoo mix should lather nicely due to you applying it on dry hair and not wet hair. This method is amazing simply because oil and water don’t mix so when we apply shampoo to wet hair it has the tendency to glide off and not lather. As a result, one ends up shampooing 2-3 times. With the method of applying the shampoo onto dry hair, one will only have to do 1-2 shampoos tops depending on how dirty the hair is. Afterwards apply a deep moisturizing conditioner (shu uemura urban moisture, kerasilk moisture conditioner, or any conditioner that has botanicals, lipids, and moisturizing properties) and massage into hair. Rinse with cool-cold water at a medium to low pressure to lock in the moisture. If you need more of an intense treatment, apply a deep moisture conditioning mask after shampoo and let it process for 15-30 mins. Some deep conditioning masks that are good are, aestelance Mud mask, Kerasilk deep treatment, Mizani moisture fuse, furterer karite hair mask. With these mask or any mask of your choice you can enhance them by applying a little oil, honey, or blue agave syrup.
Love it! You did such an amazing job on both your mom's hair, as well as yours. I'm itching to loc my hair up but I told my cousin I will wait for her to install them. I'm excited to follow your journey
I'm 11 months into my loc journey (small interlocks) and I have gone through these EXACT problems... it will all get better! And you're right, the dryness is going to continue to break off your ends, believe me... mine became so scraggly and brittle. I started a daily regimen of spraying my hair with rose water then following up with an oil. I've tried Miracle 8 oil, Wild growth oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil and even castor oil when my hair was extremely dry. Some people mix half rose water with half oil in a spray bottle and do it that way however, I had better results spraying the rose water by itself and then putting some oils in my hands and then rubbing it onto my locs as needed. Some say not to do oils so early because they think it will hinder the locking process but I didn't experience that. When you get a couple of months in, maybe you can start using a moisturizing shampoo for some of your washes. Just make sure you braid and band the locs down to prevent slippage since the moisturizing shampoo will slightly soften the hair as compared to the clarifying shampoo which keeps the hair in that rougher (for a lack of better words) and more tangled state which is good for the baby loc stage. Now I'll do maybe 2 wash cycles with a moisturizing shampoo (Aussie mega moist shampoo) and then do a wash with a clarifying shampoo (Taliah Waajid Stimulating Herbal Cleanser) to prevent any build up. Can't wait to see you and your mom's journey! Best of luck ☺
Thank you so much for the great suggestions. The dryness and broken ends are absolutely horrible but I cannot wait to have a regimen that works well for my hair.
I never comment on videos but I just had to commend you for such a great job and informative video! I’m a year sisterlocked and I wish I saw this video beforehand and had the patience to do this myself. Would love to see you do a video on how you retighten them . Love the song as well! As for moisture, I spray a mixture of water/rose water almost daily. Early on, I added tea tree oil to that mix to ease any itching. Best of luck on your loc journey!!!
kittydavp Aww thanks. I didn’t think about doing a self retightening video but others have asked so I might. Thank you for the tea tree oil suggestion.
Check to see if your water needs to be filtered. I have found the water is hard and leaves my hair very dry. Great job on your starter locs. I installed my own as well but you can get the same loc look with braids.
Omg you did a great job it's beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us I am looking forward to seeing your hair progress in this awesome loc journey.
You did an excellent job on both you and your mothers hair. Both are absolutely beautiful. I have sisterlocs and have had them for almost 10 years. Try putting a few drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil in your water spritz bottle, it should help with the dryness and itching. Hope this helps.
The dryness will stay (sorry) I’m 1yr diy microlocs and I get dry scalp/hair every time I wash. Try not to wash often. With the ends breaking I had the same problem it will lessen after awhile. It’s partially your hair rebelling and the drynes. I got aloe Vera gel and rose water and spray my hair daily. Your hair is thickening up nicely, I know you don’t feel like it is but it truly is, your ends will take the longest to look thick so your hair will look “weird” for awhile. I used salt water spray when I was inpatient I think it helped but not significantly. Don’t give up before you know it, your hair will be all over thick, full and luscious!!!
That's unfortunate but I'm glad to hear I am not the only one going through this. I can't wait to actually be able to see the results of my hair thickening up. Thank you for the suggestions!
I wish I knew about this kind of locs before I did the big chop. Been natural for over a year and got tired of not knowing what to do with the hair so I chopped it off this January. I love your hair.
Hey! May I suggest Creme of Nature argon oil shampoo and conditioner. The conditioner is an intensive treatment. Also try spritzing your hair with oil and water and put a shower cap on two or three times a week for a couple of hours. (I will sleep with the cap on). Your hair shouldn’t be soaking when you do this. Just damp. My metric is if my hair feels cold then I know it is damp. I also have low porosity hair and these tips have worked well for me. Also when you are not out in the world keep a satin scarf of cap on your head. Dry indoor air will dry out hair too. Finally oil your scalp. Jojoba oil mimics human sebum so it is great for your scalp. Coconut oil penetrates, and olive oil adds shine and a tiny bit of moisture. I hope this helps.
You can also try taking a daily omega oil or cod liver oil internally. Dryness starts from within the body. Nordic Naturals carry reputable oils. Also change your shampoo to something softer like a conditioning shampoo. Your hair looks beautiful and it will just get better. Best.
Be EXTREMELY careful about putting oils and using conditioning shampoos in your hair. Even though you cannot call these SL they will behave exactly as new SL will if you use oils and conditioners on them--they will unravel and you will have a difficult time with the locking process. It is suggested with SL that you braid and band for shampooing (too help with slippage) and that you NOT use a creamy, conditioning shampoo or leave in conditioner or oils. Go to the SL website. They have some really great products for locs (shampoo, starter locs shampoo, conditioner to use after your locs have settled and formed, etc) that I found to be really, really excellent when I had SL. I loved the shampoo (not too drying) and after 6 months I loved their hair mask as well. Again, this is important for your locs, do not use a creamy conditioning shampoo or oils. As some have suggested you can make your own spray using rosewater, etc.
I researched a lot on this before locking mine and my mom's hair. Thank you for reiterating it. I have stayed away from conditioners for that purpose and prior to this video had only used water. I didn't even think to look at the resources available on the SL website. Thanks for letting me know.
i had issues all my life with my nape area, too. it wasn't until i got locs that i realized that it's a much silkier texture and couldn't withstand all the stuff i was doing to the rest of my hair. that's why it was always the first to break. but now that i leave it all alone, you can't tell that i ever had problems there.
You should use a lightweight oil in your hair. I recommend Coconut oil. A hot oil treatment might be needed. Or at the very least take a very hot steamy shower to lift the hair cuticles and apply an oil and water mixture.
Thanks for coming back and giving us an update. Thanks for your honest opinion on the shampoo, i was going to get that shampoo for my first wash but now its a no no. My neighbor has beautiful locks and this is what she uses (Aussie shampoo) i will be trying this one.
This is a great video. I'm glad you talked about the issues you were having. In some videos I've seen where women have sisterlocks some have used rose water from a spray bottle. Or a mixture of oil and something else in a spray bottle. I've been using using rose water in my loose natural hair and I've been feeling a difference and more moisture. My hair is thick as well so maybe that might help for you.
Thank you for the suggestion. I've recently heard of rose water myself. I'll keep an eye out for it and maybe add some oils to my spray bottle in the mean time.
Aloe Gel by Lily of the Desert, Fenugreek, mixed with Ginger Root Juice, & few drops of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, &;Peppermint essential oils mixed in a great 300ml fine spray mist bottle.. (you can find on eBay ) is AMAZING for using as a daily moisturizer.
You did a great job i have sisterlocks 6 months in what workesfor my dry scalp is african black soap and apple cider vinger i do a rinse with that and you might want to add some essential oils to your spray bottle like peppermint, rosemary, tea tree
Where do you get your african black soap from? I have some that I used to use on my face but I found it very harsh and drying so I've been staying away.
Katya Sandrine Yes its very drying if you don't moisture afterwards and the same goes for your hair that's why I do an apple cider vinegar rinse after i wash my locs I get mines from a local African store, but can get it from your local beauty supply store or order offline
Looks great. I honestly don’t know why conditioning locs is so “dangerous”. There is honestly no harm from it. Not heavy conditioners etc. But light quality ones like She Scent It. When care is taken to the locs and focus then proper habits will be formed; such as extra rinsing, and observation as to what products are working with your locs. I have seen many locs with huge buildup that were never conditioning or using products. So that goes to show that it isn’t the conditioners solely. All the best on your journey. Dying for updates!!!
I think the main issue isn't conditioning in general but rather conditioning in the beginning stages of locking. From my understanding, just as conditioners are used in loose hair to detangle because it gives the hair more slippage, it can act the same way in locs. I've heard it's better to not use conditioners in the early stages because it can prolong the locking process if the hair keeps slipping out of any tangles and knots. But you bring up a good point. Maybe it can be a hit or miss for some people. I'm sure others have used it and been totally fine.
Katya Sandrine Yes the Ideal is very true and I have always been one to respect it. However extremes are not necessary in my eyes. If you are at a point where you are in discomfort and your hair is so dry it is brittle and breaking off then that process is not working for you personally. This may have even been an issue prior to locking. With that said every head is different and needs it’s own road map to success. Because you have locs that are not in loose form (like coils) I personally feel some form of conditioning and moisture would be helpful.
Yes, as mentioned in the video I have always had hair that is very prone to dryness. Because what I was doing before wasn't working out well for me, I've changed my hair routine. And ultimately, yes every head is different and people have to figure out on an individual level what does or does not work for their hair.
Hello! Your hair looks amazing . For your dryness have you tried using rose water and an oil of your choice? I live in Las Vegas and it's super dry on top of that the water is really hard so I experienced a lot of dryness and breakage. So now I use rose water and almond oil as a daily moisturizer. Also I use a mix of African black soap with almond oil in it and deep condition by doing a hot oil treatment with castor oil, almond oil, and whatever essential oil is in my cabinet. But mainly lemongrass to get rid of the itchiness. Try those if you haven't already.
You said it took you 2 weeks to install. I’m almost at my two week mark with my DIY sister love and was wondering how long did you wait to wash your hair. Currently my hair is dirty and I’m not even done with install. Not sure how long I should wait, just looking for guidance. Btw you did a great job! I used your video as my guide to install my own!
I might be too late but definitely wash your hair. Just make sure you braid and band whatever you have done and stretch what you haven't. I also took 2 weeks and waited until I was done and I had so much build up in my hair that took a while to get out.
A moisturizing shampoo is what you need. There is one by OGX coconut water weightless hydrating shampoo is bomb. I have a video that talks about it. Hope it helps. Blessings
Stop using that shampoo immediately! You are stripping the life out of your hair. Go to Damien Walters channel and look up the shampoo and conditioning regimine he uses. Your hair and scalp need moisture but not products. You did a great job installing your locs. Hope you post updates. 😊
Thank you :) The last time I used that shampoo was before this video was made. I've heard from a lot of other people to use something else. I will check out his videos and yes I will be posting more updates soon!
Keep da clarifyin shampoo u are CORRECT FOR THAT PART IT SUPPOSED TO DRY IT OUT TO START THE LOCKING PROCESS DONT LISTEN TO THESE PPL CUZ U DONT WANT BUILD UP...SPRAY YOUR HAIR DAILY WITH PEPPERMINT WATER TO COMBAT THE ITCHIN AND IT HAS AND AWESOME SMELL U CAN USE ROSE WATER TOO I PREFER PEPPERMINT THO AND USE JOJOBA OIL LIGHTLY ON YO SCALP FOR MOISTURE CUZ ITS THE CLOSEST OIL TO SEBUM OUR NATURAL HAIR OIL!!! HOPE THIS HELPS!!!
You did an awesome job! I would hire you right now. If you want your first client let me know. My hair is much more thinner than yours though. Please keep making update videos. So many people quit after a while. Quick Tip: put the link to your channel in the description section of your instagram. People who find you there will also subscribe here.Your channel will grow very quickly. I look forward following your hair journey.
Hi my name is Katrina I’ve watched you installed your mom locs they look amazing and yours as well, however you said you are experiencing dryness well you need to moisturize your hair you need to use a deep cleaning shampoo and then a moisturizing shampoo and moisturizing conditioner that’s it and to maintain all you need is oil that hydrates your hair like olive oil coconut, jojoba oils it is very simple I have been where you are for a long time I installed my own locks 2 1/2 years ago as well. so I know you are going through.I have studied this guy on RUclips his name is Damian Walter’s he is the guru of hair locks natural hair etc. he knows what products to use why, why not and had to take care of your hair. I strongly recommend this guy check him out you can’t go wrong. go to his page and you’ll see he has done my hair twice already and I live in California he’s in Texas so that’s my suggestion to you and keep doing what you’re doing all these suggestions I have given to you I have gotten from him and it works trust me... bye for now and Happy locing...
Stop using the clarifying shampoo.... It strips the natural oils in the hair... Also, clarifying shampoo is for getting the medicine, dirt, elements from the outside etc... Out of the hair.... If you want to get buildup out of the hair then once every 3 months is ok.... Do not use the Vo5 shampoo any more... It is not formulated for our texture of hair etc.... The shampoo that is really good and what I use is Kera Care Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Humecto cream conditioner. The Hydrating shampoo can be used by itself when you want to do a quick shampoo. It has conditioner in it and you don't have to use alot of it because its concentrated. I love their humecto cream conditioner because you can use it as a 1 minute rinse out or a 10 minute moisturizing treatment. When you rinse the conditioner out of the hair use cool water.... This will help to lay down the hair shaft and give it a natural shine with out having to put alot of product into the hair. I hope this was helpful!!! 😊
Katya Sandrine lol! I'm just asking because I'm thinking about getting some also and I want to see how many I need to get that fullness. You should do a video whenever you do count them
camille espy Haha I understand because I totally did the exact same thing in the months leading up to me installing my locs. I will mention it in a video whenever I do count it.
Use Rose Water and Vitamin E oil.
Put it in a Spray Bottle and mist it daily.
Don't use a Clarifying Shampoo often bc it will dry it out.
Try a Moisturizing Shampoo.
Thank you. Definitely planning on using a different shampoo!!
Gentille
This is my very first sit down video and I didn't realize how much I had zoomed in. Apologies for being so close to the camera, for all the ums, uhhs, and lip smacking. And also for all the hair touching!!!
That's what makes it real. Never apologize for a job well done. It looks amazing!
I appreciate that!
Aww. Thank you for the encouragement!!
Should see my vids sometime....I don't edit. I've sneezed, burped, ...flat out lost my thoughts in the middle of speaking etc. but guess what....thats me... Anything different would be fake. You ....are real and it shows. Real keeps folks coming back.
Katya Sandrine carrot oil & Jamaican black castor oil add tea tree oil
17days-holly he'll.
They are absoluty gorgeOUS!.

What do you use in the baby stage of locs? And how long do you wait to do anything to them?
Hello
I have viewed all your sisterlock videos and I have decided to DYI my hair myself.
Yours turned out beautifully.
Thank you for sharing your greatly detailed videos, they are awesome.
You did a excellent job especially for doing it yourself can we please see a update of your mom hair also
Yes ma'am. As soon as I can get the woman to sit down again for another video. Lol she's all over the place.
Congrats on being officially Loced ! I can't believe you had the patients to do both you and your moms hair. I fell in love with sisterlocs/microlocs too but it's so expensive so I decided to plait my hair myself to start it off.
Looking back now I don't know how I had the patience for it either lol. Thanks for the encouragement. I can't wait to eventually have that.
Katya Sandrine no problem. The time will go by fast. I'm about to be 1 year in. Are you going to go to a salon to get your hair maintained or are you going to do it yourself ?
I am maintaining it myself but I'm sure I'll go to a salon to get pampered at some point.
Ariet Othow did you braid your hair then interlock as it grew out
Try mixing olive oil, camellia oil, castor oil, avocado oil, or sweet almond oil to a moisturizing shampoo (aphoghee deep moisture shampoo, Kerasilk moisture shampoo, aestelance MC shampoo, shu uemura urban moisture shampoo, or any moisture shampoo that you like.

Check to see if your water needs to be filtered. I have found the water is hard and leaves my hair very dry. Great job on your starter locs. I installed my own as well but you can get the same loc look with braids.
Kinky curly has a shampoo called "come clean." It doesn't strip my hair as much as clarifying shampoos.
You did a great job. Wow. I don’t think you should combine any of the the Locs. It looks perfect.👍🏾
Omg you did a great job it's beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us I am looking forward to seeing your hair progress in this awesome loc journey.

Katya Sandrine definitely. Already growing it out again. 😊
Wooooow!!! Your work is amazing!!!! 💟🌼💟🌼💟🌼
You did a fabulous diy job on you and your mother's hair.
I tried my best. Thank you!

Question: why aren’t they sister locks?
i had issues all my life with my nape area, too. it wasn't until i got locs that i realized that it's a much silkier texture and couldn't withstand all the stuff i was doing to the rest of my hair. that's why it was always the first to break. but now that i leave it all alone, you can't tell that i ever had problems there.
Oh wow. Sound like my hair is very similar to yours. Well hopefully my nape area will grow as well
i guarantee you it will. my nape is the longest it's ever been - bra strap length, and all i had to do was keep livin'. good job on the installs!
Hopefully the Aussie works for you. It's been working great for my mom's hair and she loves it.
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous!!! Wish you were in Dallas. I would pay you to do my hair ☺
Katya Sandrine Try adding Tea Tree oil in your water to spray your scalp
I've heard this from a couple of others as well. When I get my hands on some tea tree oil I will definitely try this.
Also... I forgot to mention... I love your hair!!!!! Very beautiful and great job!!!! Hahaha
Thank you for the compliment :)
I can't believe you did microlocs on yourself! How?! It looks amazing, you have alot of patience!
Katya Sandrine
Yes its very drying if you don't moisture afterwards and the same goes for your hair that's why I do an apple cider vinegar rinse after i wash my locs I get mines from a local African store, but can get it from your local beauty supply store or order offline
Okay. Thank you!

Great Job.
Very Nice and Neat.
You did an amazing job!!! It looks beautiful, a spray bottle with essential oils and some light oils should help with moisture.
You did a very impressive job! They look awesome.
YOU DID A REALLY GOOD JOB TO YOUR HAIR AND MOM HAIR.
Thank you!! I have changed my routine and will be mentioning it in my next video.
would you say theres more shrinkage in box braids/twists or you locs, which yould be longer in your opinion?
Co-wash and deep condition with heat (under the dryer for at least 30 minutes to an hour). I use Cantu and cream of nature products
Your locks are beautiful!!! Get a good oil to lock in moisture. What is the name of the song? Love it!
Thank you. I have been using almond oil and it has been working well for me. The song is called Nubian Delight by Acronym
clarifying shampoos are to be used once every 2 months or once a month if a person has oily hair
Love the song🌻
Blessings
May I ask where you get the OGX shampoo from?
Katya Sandrine I got mine from Walmart
Use a moisturizing shampoo. And make a moisturizer spray with water and oils to mist on it.
I will check out his videos and yes I will be posting more updates soon!
he uses products

How did you/do you maintain them? Interlock?
I strongly recommend this guy check him out you can’t go wrong. go to his page and you’ll see he has done my hair twice already and I live in California he’s in Texas so that’s my suggestion to you and keep doing what you’re doing all these suggestions I have given to you I have gotten from him and it works trust me... bye for now and Happy locing...
you did great🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Looks great!
How big are your parts?
Were you relaxed or natural when you started ?
Habesha Naturals is a great product line:www.etsy.com/shop/habeshanaturals
Try the leaving conditioner
I talk about this in the following update. Thanks for the suggestions!!
you did really well.
Stop shampooing your hair only use.conditioner and use pudding witch in only conditioner, I’m sure this will help a lot
you did a good job. 😀
