When some people can't afford or want to work hard for certain things they turn to hating them. If I think an item is overpriced or out of my price range I don't buy it and move on with my life. The only other thing I can think of is a childhood game of dominos gone terribly wrong and they are now scarred forever.
Jay, I have been a long time watcher of your videos and you have devoted a large portion of your life to sharing your woodworking journey for free which is admirable. Regardless of what tool you are discussing, it is totally inappropriate for people to give you a hard time. Please know that many people including myself love your vids and I use a ton of your tricks and builds in my shop. Haters suck!
Lol. The f word.. Awesome. I would love to own a great quality tool like festool. It's a lot easier to say you hate a tool than working your butt of to buy it.
The F****** stuff is great. Expensive, but for people who do this for living, it makes the world of difference to have well built, accurate tools which produce identical results every time you use it. I have the TS55 saw, with 2.8m of track, and it's by far the most expensive tool I own. It's also the one without which I couldn't do my job. Keep up the good work dude, I really enjoy your videos.
Hi Jay, as I'm sure you know, people always find something to complain about. It seems like you have a good approach to dealing with the haters. Just let them be miserable. Keep on truckin Jay! FWIW I appreciate what you do and I don't give a s word about your tools.
I have noticed the same thing about the F word company. I don't understand it. I am still finding my way around the best companies for tools, so I appreciated you tool review.
I have just about every brand of tool out there including Festool. I love my Festool track saw and sanders and have found none better. And for me the dust extractor, a CT36, is a life saver. The tools allow me to work almost dust free inside my house and my son who is a master builder has dibs on my Festool gear if something happens to me :-) I also have Harbor Freight tools that do well for what I need. I buy what I can afford and for the value they bring me. My 12" HF miter saw works great and because I rarely use a miter saw it fits my need. Most people with issues concerning Festool or even SawStop seems to be the price. My son once told me to buy the best you can afford or you will regret it. So that's what I do. Love the videos and keep up the great work. Your SketchUp videos are so helpful.
Good morning Jay. I was hoping that the "F Word" was a Festool thing and not the real F-Word. One of the things I appreciate about your videos is that you pretty much keep them "G" rated. I have grand-kids around and I never have to worry about you blurting out profanity while we are watching. Thank you sir!
I like Festool and if I had the funds available I would invest in the new Festool sanders, dominio, and track saw. Nothing wrong with quality tools. Those same folks who complain about Festool also probably complain about Lie Nielsen, Veritas, and don't even think of mentioning Bad Axe Tool Works. Those folks can stick with their Craftsman and HF tools. I'll take quality tools every day.
Jay, regardless of what tool you mention in your videos, someone is going to "thumbs-down" you or leave their two cents in a comment. At the end of the day, you do you, and let everybody else either watch and enjoy or move on. I personally like your videos, very informative and creative.
Thanks for the video's Jay on your tools. I have LOVED them all. I personally have two festool products and personally I love them. I have the small drill and the orbit sander. Both are great products. They aren't the most expensive products either and the price to me is worth it. I look forward to purchasing more in future, because they are very nice. Keep up the great job!
I have a pro woodworking friend who felt that same hate for Festool until he tried a few, now he is a convert. I guess once you go green you never go back!!
I tend to over engineer and so the extra cost of the dominos compared to pocket holes seems justified to me as they are so much stronger. If you make them it would be very hard to recreate the grooved channels which help the glue flow correctly. Keep up the great work!
Spending money on well made tools makes a lot more sense than spending $300 a month at Starbucks or at a bar. I am completely content drinking my home brewed coffee and putting the savings towards new Festools.
i dont know how anyone could HATE the domino, so much better than a biscuit and can be used in a variety of applications. I would love to own one in the future,
+Josh H oh, and if you want it to look good you have to add in the price of the pocket hole plugs, i guess some people do make their own, but something to consider
I am a teacher at a Norwegian Woodworking Schoole, (Østfold Møbelsnekkerskole) and we use Festool. We are not sponsored, but theire tools are so intuitive and easy too use/teach with.
We have a proverb here in Greece, that says (more or less in English) :"Those that a fox can't reach she claims are hanging too high" It is used when someone doesn't want to admit he is not good enough, or cannot do something, or cannot have something, so he claims that something is more difficult, or (in this case) not good enough than it really is.
I think the price is a major deterrent. Wood working is my hobby so I cannot justify spending 1k+ on a tool that I can obtain for less than 25% of that at Home Depot. Would I like a Domino...? ABSOLUTELY, but I have to try my hand at mortise and tenon joinery without the fancy tools first :) Great videos, it is folks like you, Nick, Mathias, and others that have me hooked on wood working.
I don't (can't) own any of the F-word tools only because of cost-vs-need. I've seen most of their tools at our local woodworking retail store and think their a very good line of tools. I'm old enough to remember when the first biscuit joiner came out and all the furor about that mortise-and-tenon style joint application by the hobbyists and DIYers. Then came the pocket hole systems to simplify and improve upon an age-old method of screwing surfaces together other than with butt-joint-type of joint. Personally, I think the domino style of joinery is brilliant albeit cursed with pretty much the same complaints that plagued biscuit and pocket hole joinery initially. All that said, Jay, and as regards the negativity we all view and suffer through on RUclips... "haters gonna hate". Its their loss as far as I'm concerned, and I encourage you to continue to provide the same excellent content you always have. By the way, I was inspired by Festool's track saw system and invested in a "wanna be" track saw system that works just fine for me and was affordable. So, all you haters... redirect the energy and time it takes you to be negative into doing some research into something YOU choose to use, then share THAT with other folks. :)
That reminds me of the old George Carlin bit...about replacing the word "kill" with the "F" word in the old westerns.... "Sherriff, We're gonna Festool you now. But we're gonna Festool you slow."
I have a few Festool items I think if you can justify the price then you will love the tool. I guess if you drove around in a Jaguar some would put the hate out there too....lol. Can't wait till next week when the haters come out for the SawStop.....Keep up the great work Jay.
Lol, I like it "the F word". We'll no one has to be hateful but I can see why people are so opinionated about festool. I my self find a lot of their tool highly over priced but tools like the domino or their edge bander or any other of their own designs I find reasonably priced. The domino I actually find to be somewhat of a good deal if you consider how innovative that tool is and how much money they would have invested into R&D and seeing how much they charge for an old cordless drill you would think they would have had a lot bigger price tag on the domino.
I know a few people that had the same thought about the "F" word and now that they have one it's the greatest tool in the world, people are funny. I agree with Joe I think price point has a lot to do with this negativity but really you can not buy a Cadillac for the price of a Malibu and yet the person with the Malibu thinks it's just as good, lol. It's all good though Jay remember we love the trolls :-) Looking forward to your thoughts on your saw stop
Wealth/material envy is so sad. You see it in every hobby. Keep up the great work with what ever brand of tools you like. Will you be spray painting the Domino :)
Yeah, I take a lot of flack for using Festool also. I don't build quick weekend projects, and my time in my shop is limited to the weekends. I want to do things the quickest most efficient way, and sometimes Festool tools enable me to do that. Can I make mortise and tenons with a handsaw and a chisel? Yes. However I like to be able to choose the method that not only makes the most sense for me, but also helps me get the project done within the time constraints that I have.
Life's too short to bicker about a tool company. My opinion: Stay within your budget, use the tool(s) that work for you, and don't spend any energy worrying about what other people use. Just enjoy the craft!
I have a Domino 500 and the smaller track saw with a 4 and 9ft? track. Both of them are really handy. I did buy a few of their sanders, the dust collection is good and having the same cord and dust collection work on all of their tools. The sanders aren't better than other ones, just handier.
Lmao. Festool is just expensive. If it was cheaper we'd all have them. Also, if u buy anything festool means u have to buy into the system. I hate systems, like Apple, however I love the festool system. I love being able to put one tool away and grab another in seconds with no rolling up cords. Their dust collection is top notch for a hand tool. Auto start on the vac is amazing. Not to mention I work all day, I don't want my garage time to feel like work too.
My only problem with Festool is cost. I won't buy Festool because I can buy two of anything else for less. Festool is known for quality, precision and cost.
Good comparison on the pocket hole screws versus the loose tenons. The loose tenons are less expensive at Cincinnati Dowel. The 10mm x 50m are right at $,10 each in 250 packs. I ordered some on Black Friday and I got an additional 20% off and free shipping. the 5mm are $.05 in 500 quantity. They also have free shipping all the time on orders of $50 or more. Not a plug just an FYI.
+Jay Bates 2 judging by Mathias' findings, pocket holes and tenons are not exactly in direct competition. Apples / oranges. Try twice as many pocket holes for the same joint and You're probably still not there. Also, as You would need the hole plug wedge thingies for pocket holes to make the joint at least look if not perform as good as the Domino joint, You should include the price of that, too.
On the sketchup that I downloaded recently, when my trial was up, it continued to work as a basic piece, just didn't have the layout and such. There may be more pieces that were missing, but it's nothing I have noticed.
For me, I have a _very_ limited experience with festool. My image of festool is that they are a very premium brand of super-quality tools, perhaps more quality than the average home-user needs, hence the high price? The one expeience I have is that I bought a bit holder from festool, I keep breaking mine so I bought one for about 30 USD thinking, This will work a life-time! The only issue is that it does not fit a regular driver, they have slightly different proprietary way of making things. Since then I'm not bying anything festool without first checking that the parts fit. That is generally what I'v gathered about festool, they make really great stuff, but they sometimes make it their own way so it does not fit the standard. So for me I ended up with a super-overpriced super-nice quality bit holder that I have to grind down with my angle-grinder to make it fit :)
Your videos for The use of The tool, AvE's video for how The tool itself is built is a great combo, at least it works for me. Hate often emerge from jealousy i guess. Don't worry, you're doing great.
Just fyi...I've been using the latest download of Sketchup Make 2015 and the free version license specifically states: non-commercial use only. Just say'n. Though for what they're asking for the pro version, you better be using it for commercial use :)
Jay, jay, jay. You missed the boat here. You could have set up the X-carve to be cranking out dominoes over in the corner like an Oompa Loompa. THEN it would have been ok to use the F-word, I think. 8-)
Good one Jay. Amen to the Festool thing. If there not your thing, don't buy them. If you don't like Milwaukee, don't buy them. If you don't like Ryobi, don't buy them............................. etc. I am always surprised by the folks that have never used Festool but still are bashers. You find very few Festool owners that regret their purchases. Go figure.Like most things. If it ain't right for you, don't do it. You don't have to criticize everyone else.JimE
F***ool is the Apple of woodworking. Then again, woodworking has a lot of Apple-equivalents. You love them or hate them. I don't have any of them, mostly because I think the cost is ridiculous, not because they are bad tools, which would be the difference between Apple and F***ool. I personally don't think Apple is all that great for normal use, though I do see the benefits on the audio/video software side of things. I would be interested in the Domino, but I do not have money to spend on a luxury like that, and that would be the only tool of theirs I would be interested in. I will save up my money for a bandsaw, or better dust collection, or a better tablesaw. Thank you Jay for addressing this issue. :)
Hilarious! I don't know what it is about that company either. I'm not personally buying a Domino, but that's just because I don't have $1000 to throw at it, not that it is Festool.
I won't beat a dead horse, but I couldn't agree more that there are so many out there that don't use the f word products for no reason other than their cost. Im a DAV with serious COPD and the f products are what have kept me able to continue my woodworking and still protect my lungs. I know there are masks available, I have several. Most face masks are difficult for me to breathe through. I use a shop vacuum system for larger equipment as well as a Delta air cleaner hanging from the ceiling. F products such as sanders connected to their dust extractor save me from the fine dust in my immediate working area. I suppose someone could complain about the KT systems that are changed over and over again. I have gone through several just to get to the point of having the most efficient dust/chip collection for the same protection I use the F products. Im laughing while writing this because of using the F and KT letters instead of naming the product. At the risk of offending anyone I buy any Festool product with dust collection that I can afford to keep me woodworking. Same thing for Kreg Tools. The cost isn't in the ballpark with Festool but some would complain having to pay $140 every time they make a design change isnt worth it. I think it is. Finally I drive GMC products most of my life. Many drive Fords, Dodge, and even some non american made cars. Thats another reason why some wont use Festool and I appreciate that point of view. When an american company comes out with an equivalent product, Ill be first in line. Are there any American made power tools even available? So now that I have joined you in ticking off a number of people, I will go back to my coffee and guarantee you that no matter what criticism I receive for this post it will be ignored by me. Ah freedom of speech in America.
Festool provides that edge with features for a significant upcharge. But I’m not a hater. If you have the means, go for it. The health benefits of cleaner air and less dust really can be the difference. It’s all about what’s more valuable. That craft beer 🍻 ... or a sweet Festool miter saw with superior dust collection. If I ever have the opportunity, I will choose a few of those f-word tools. Not all them like a fan boy. But certainly those that make their mark beyond just a name (plunge saws, HEPA vacuums, Miter saw and domino jointers of course).
+Adam Craig I agree it is similar but not as bad with Apple products, they are just more expensive than their counterparts as well as being proprietary nature where it works very well within its own series but not as effective with other products. But mostly the cost.
I think its because most of the people watching your videos are weekend woodworkers who cant afford most of the festool stuff so when we watch and you break out the super expensive stuff like the domino you seperate from most of your audience same with cnc. I think it makes people angry because when we watch we are thinking about doing this ourselves or learning a technique but then out comes the domino. Anyway, i love your videos jay, use what you like and i will certainly continue watching ive really enjoyed it.
Sketchup 2015 and 2016 is free to use as in just the sketchup basic the 2016 cost $695.00 which allows you to use Layout 2016 and Stylebuilder but I haven't seen much difference in the 2015 to the 2016.
+Bobby Bush SketchUp Make 2016 is not allowed for commercial use. I use it to make plans so I would be in violation to their terms of service. SketchUp 8 is allowed for commercial use.
I don't get it either. You'll probably get as much crap for the SawStop as well. People seem to trash talk it as much as Festool. I think that if many of those same people had the money, they would themselves own both today. Sweet coffee mug.
its the money... people get a "keeping up with the Jones'" attitude when they see the f-word. They make high quality tools... it is what it is. I don't get it either. I saw the comment section of a beginner woodworker's video who had a crap ton of festool stuff and they raked him through the coals.... sad really.
its the huge price tag. Festool holds the patent on this and they arent licensing it. so they can sell it for however much they wish. i think they are killing themselves with their pricing structure. From the comments you got you can tell there are a lot of people who, even if they can afford it they will never buy a festool tool ever. If you want an example of the opposite, look at the gun industry. in 1982 Glock came out with this lightweight reliable accurate handgun, it had fewer moving parts, easy to disassemble for cleaning. The Glock 17 was the festool domino of the gun world and they sold it for the paltry sum of $400 when most of their competitors were much higher. This endeared it to the customer. 30+ years later its one of the most common guns on the market. When the critical patents expire, expect a flood of these machines. Festool will probably be moving on to something else by then.
It all boils down to low self esteem. Some people weren't held as children, other too much, some weren't breastfed, while others were for too long. Trolls are generally angry people and I actually pity them and their sad little existence. I for one really enjoyed your using the "F" word since that is a tool I could see really being productive in a furniture shop and would at some point like to purchase one. Be prepared for a similar amount of unwarranted rage from your upcoming Saw Stop video.
Ha! Wasn't criticizing, Jay. Was just asking if you think that would of worked. :) Like you've said before [paraphrasing here], you think of a solution, come up with one that works, then stop thinking of any others cause the first one worked. Edit: Oh.. it was this video you said it.. or at least repeated it. :D I want to make an Aggravation board also, but I can't find those marble bit's online. Everywhere is out of stock.
Coming talks: Please cover the key function e.g turning off safety when cutting green wood and possibly cover using a smaller than 10" blade like a skill saw blade and if it interacts with Saw stop.As far as Festool is concerned good design but too expensive and the German company is too hard headed to even consider discounts even when the dollar to Euro has dropped 38%.. IMHO
+William Dawson If the wood is wet enough to engage the safety feature it's too wet in my opinion to be putting on a cast iron work surface. You will have to disengage the safety feature every before turning the saw on with a smaller blade.
I think a comparison between Apple and Festool makes sense. Both are exceptionally designed products that are slightly different than what's been done before and they both work really, really well. Both have devoted followers. Other tool companies (like Windows and Android) make great products that work, are cheaper and are more "standard", yet some devotees of those "standard" tools get angry at those who choose Festool for some reason. I get it. I'm a Windows/Android guy that used to get angry at Apple and their cult...err...fans. I don't any more, it's just dumb. Like what you like and use what works best for you.
Jay when doing your sawstop video could you put the hotdog into the blade at a speed that a kickback would occur? That's how most table saw injuries occur.
haha ive been looking at festool also but have you seen ave?...he has taken apart on of thier saws and wow mostly plastic parts...not good for the price and longevaty, so kinda scared me away esp. the price...so still looking...thanks for your vid they are awesome and keep up the good work...p.
My, my... my momma said festool is the devil! Lol. From what I've seen, festool makes great tools. I think the hate comes a little from the price. People feel like they are maybe being taken advantage of. Hell, idk. Full disclosure though, I don't own any. It's just more money than I can justify spending, but I wouldn't throw one out of my shop.
I think the problem that people have with Festool is that they are priced so that the average person can't afford them. So those that buy them are considered the "elitists". They are a great tool and make the process very nice, but since they keep there tools out of reach for so many makes them greedy. Do I want one, yes! Will I ever be able to afford them so I can use them in my shop? Probably not.
When some people can't afford or want to work hard for certain things they turn to hating them. If I think an item is overpriced or out of my price range I don't buy it and move on with my life. The only other thing I can think of is a childhood game of dominos gone terribly wrong and they are now scarred forever.
Main thing I learned so far with your sketchup tutorials are all the shortcut keys, the repetitiveness really makes it stick in your mind.

lol. Festool, the Bose of the tool world
As soon as I saw the title, I knew exactly what that was going to be aimed at.
You never fail to amuse me. Keep on keeping on!
I have a pro woodworking friend who felt that same hate for Festool until he tried a few, now he is a convert. I guess once you go green you never go back!!
The Domino, track saw and sanders are real game changers in a small shop for people with limited shop time.
I tend to over engineer and so the extra cost of the dominos compared to pocket holes seems justified to me as they are so much stronger. If you make them it would be very hard to recreate the grooved channels which help the glue flow correctly.

This is awesome!!
Spending money on well made tools makes a lot more sense than spending $300 a month at Starbucks or at a bar. I am completely content drinking my home brewed coffee and putting the savings towards new Festools.
I totally agree

510 dominos in a pack? That's an interesting number to round up to

Festool just bought out Saw Stop
Jay. Festool those people!

I have no festool tools. I would LOVE to have them. They are pricey. Out of my range right now. But i still want one. Especially the Domino.

+GuysWoodshop Well said.
That's exactly my perspective
If Festool is good enough for my boy Norm and the guys of Ask This Old House, then it's good enough for me.
Bravo Bates, bravo
So, will the next video after the SawStop one be called "The S word"....lol
+Jim Dockrell (Watertone) hahahaha. Possibly!!
My only problem with Festool is cost. I won't buy Festool because I can buy two of anything else for less. Festool is known for quality, precision and cost.
Festool is awesome and a great, quality, German product!
+WoodRodent Good to know that. Thanks.
I own the festool plunge saw and its amazing in other ways
Then explain why this is sponsored by festool...?
Just fyi...I've been using the latest download of Sketchup Make 2015 and the free version license specifically states: non-commercial use only.
Just say'n.
Though for what they're asking for the pro version, you better be using it for commercial use :)
Jay, jay, jay. You missed the boat here. You could have set up the X-carve to be cranking out dominoes over in the corner like an Oompa Loompa. THEN it would have been ok to use the F-word, I think. 8-)
Here's another good "F" word from the Euro Zone, FELDER.
LOL
love the censorship. I laughed every time!!!
i love sketchup, I just wish they offered a version in-between $0 and $700 and I'd happily buy it
+Colin Cochran They do the 2016 Pro is $695 but I am happy with just the standard version
Nothing in life is expensive if to you it has value...
Festool is just WAY to expensive for us Po Folks.
I guess the whole hate thing with Festool started with the wood whisperer.
But certainly those that make their mark beyond just a name (plunge saws, HEPA vacuums, Miter saw and domino jointers of course).
i think it's just the price. their stuff is damn expensive.
+Jay Bates 2 ok yea I just use it for my personal use
I don't get it either. You'll probably get as much crap for the SawStop as well. People seem to trash talk it as much as Festool. I think that if many of those same people had the money, they would themselves own both today.
Sweet coffee mug.
its the money... people get a "keeping up with the Jones'" attitude when they see the f-word. They make high quality tools... it is what it is. I don't get it either. I saw the comment section of a beginner woodworker's video who had a crap ton of festool stuff and they raked him through the coals.... sad really.
Stumpynubs has plans for building your own dominoes joiner/cutter for those that cannot afford the Festool.
its the huge price tag. Festool will probably be moving on to something else by then.
they must be good, harbour freight have completely sold out of them ......lol
also showing 1000.00 tools that most people can't afford will anger people but it's nice seeing how to use them in projects.
It's not about company,it's about people.
We could have a drinking game for everytime he states "all that good stuff"
+John Dinkeldein ahhhhhhh! I repeat phrases constantly. Quite aggravating and all that good stuff.
+Jay Bates 2 pretty sure that's a Michigan thing. Both of my brothers and myself do that. ;-)
i think its their prices...? im looking fwd to getting a f****** domino. .good vid today as always! adrina says "hi jay bates " have a good one bro!
+Joe basementwoodworking Tell her I said HI!
Be prepared for a similar amount of unwarranted rage from your upcoming Saw Stop video.
whats the festoon vac you have on your dust mobile shop vac station now.
I want to make an Aggravation board also, but I can't find those marble bit's online.
Ramp up the fun and use a Harbor Freight biscuit jointer to see who comes out the wood work then.
One word: Jealousy
I think a comparison between Apple and Festool makes sense. Both are exceptionally designed products that are slightly different than what's been done before and they both work really, really well. Both have devoted followers.
Other tool companies (like Windows and Android) make great products that work, are cheaper and are more "standard", yet some devotees of those "standard" tools get angry at those who choose Festool for some reason.
I get it. I'm a Windows/Android guy that used to get angry at Apple and their cult...err...fans. I don't any more, it's just dumb. Like what you like and use what works best for you.
Nice comparison and good for you for recognizing what's really happening. We humans are a funny bunch...
Hi Jay..... what is the download for sketchup 8? Thx😊
Jay when doing your sawstop video could you put the hotdog into the blade at a speed that a kickback would occur? That's how most table saw injuries occur.
I have no plans on doing the hot dog test.
haha ive been looking at festool also but have you seen ave?...he has taken apart on of thier saws and wow mostly plastic parts...not good for the price and longevaty, so kinda scared me away esp. the price...so still looking...thanks for your vid they are awesome and keep up the good work...p.
My, my... my momma said festool is the devil! Lol. From what I've seen, festool makes great tools. I think the hate comes a little from the price. People feel like they are maybe being taken advantage of. Hell, idk. Full disclosure though, I don't own any. It's just more money than I can justify spending, but I wouldn't throw one out of my shop.
I imagine people don't like the price. I love the tools, seen my recent update? I talk about the F-word too! haha
Ain't hate for me, just sad I can't afford them. :) Keep up the good work!
Festool is like the 1%. A lot of people like to hate on them, but they must be doing something right.
Probably not.
very good
