Which one is the worst?
Chris Davis
Strasburg
Davis 100% WAY to much money
Love the vids and also Chris davis
Corbin 🤢
It may be disastrous for the Mets, but the Bonilla deal is a hilarious thing for every non Mets fan 😂😂😂
If it were disastrous the Mets wouldn’t have the highest payroll in the league. U really think a man with a net worth of 20
Billion cares about that
It's only $1 million a year. Believe me we joke about it just as much
2 million to the owners is like $20 to the regular fan nobody truly cares
@@izaman56 2 mil for Steve Cohen is like a penny to us sadly lol
@@baseballno3214 And yet people are out here crying about how Carlos Correa deserves to be paid.
Strasburg's is the most tragic. One of the greatest prospects ever, lived up to the initial hype, gets Tommy John, returns and is an all star, gets injured, returns and once again is an all-star and wins world series MVP, signs the massive deal, gets the worst injury you can get as a pitcher, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Ass situation for the nationals
The Bobby Bonilla deal isn’t actually a bad one for the mets though, they used the money to sign Mike Hampton, got to a World Series and the compensatory pick they acquired losing him in free agency snagged them David Wright
@@billykammerer241because the Mets blow
@Billy Kammerer I agree, but the buyout that the deferred money facilitated for you Hampton and in turn Wright so it’s not an awful outcome.
@philthornton1382 it is without rings. That was the reason they did it
@@billykammerer241 I remember as a kid, the Mets signed Bonilla to the largest contract at the time. The NY Post called him "the 29 Million Dollar Man" this was over about 4 or 5 years. I think Ryne Sandburg beat him a few weeks later with a multi year 35 million dollar contract.
So you pay a guy $30 million over 25 years to avoid paying $5.9 million up front. Don't ever hire that person as your financial advisor.
right god that pisses me off so much
The Mets ownership group was caught in the Madoff ponzie scheme. They believed they were going to be able to turn that 5.9 million they saved to well beyond 30 million by 2011.
Actually, the deal is worth the same due to inflation and interest Both are worth about 5.9 million at the time of signing
The wilpons used that money in the madoff scam to gain a lot more. When shit hit the fan as it did. This deal was a lot worse. I read the details on it. To much info. But in the end Bobby won. Good for him
The Bobby Bonilla deal assumed 7-8% annual returns from the money Mets owner Fred Wilson invested with Bernie Madoff returned every year. Of course that blew up and thus this deal turned out to be a huge bust.
Imagine seeing how injury prone Stephen Strasburg has been his whole career then signing him to a 200 mill deal 😂
245 million to be exact 💀
It was a nice thank you to him as he had just won the WS MVP and he was being underpaid because he was still on his rookie contract.
@@jigilous can't pay guys off what they did. Now they're paying the price literally and figuratively.
Anthony Rendon should he mentioned.
Aaron Judge will be mentioned in 3-4 years
As a Yankees fan, I still think of that godawful Jacoby Ellsbury contract. That was absolutely brutal.
suckers
Yea it was I think he's gone the red sox are glad that he's gone
Anything Angels have signed this past decade has been nightmare.
CJ Wilson, Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Anthony Rendon.
Mike Trouth, Shohei Ohtani
Don't forget the Upton brother they signed (i think it was Justin). Going back between 10-20 years ago you got Vernon Wells, Mo Vaughn, Gary Mathews Jr., and Bartolo Colon (yeah Colon won a Cy Young award with Angels but his other 3 seasons with the team were terrible) I'm sure there's quite a few more I'm forgetting.
Did Rendon have injury issues before LA?
@@unkledoda420 Wanna add David Freese?
As a Tigers fan I am hoping and praying that Javy has a huge season next year and then uses his player option to become a free agent again
It's pathetic that we're all hoping (based on 22) that Baez and Rodriguez will play well enough to get the hell out of Detroit. I realize it's more nuanced than that, especially with Rodriguez and the pitching market, but this season left scars..
Agreed. I honestly don't know what Al Avila was thinking. Hopefully our new GM will do somewhat better in rebuilding.
They probably won’t leave because of how much they are getting paid sadly but all we can do is pray they do if they don’t do good
He ain't gonna improve if he keeps chasing them sliders.
Also, I think his dWar was actually around 0, and the glove is supposed to be the magical part of his game. His mediocre hitting supplied his majority value as a player.
I don't know if many people realize this, but the reason the Met's were confident to defer BB's payments at such a rate is because they had their money with Madoff. The Mets were "guaranteed" a rate of return well beyond prevailing interest rates so it made fiscal sense to defer the money. If Madoff's scheme were actually true, the Met's owners at the time would have made sizable profits on the spread between their return against deferred payments.
I subscribed! I want to see that percentage look better on the next video XD
Really surprised you didn’t mention Patrick Corbin
My favorite holiday after Christmas? Bobby Bonilla day 💲💲💲💲💶
Bobby turns 62 in 2025. He can then start taking his MLB pension at max value.
Baez was actually pretty consistent in his time with the cubs including the 2 place finish for the 2018 MVP. The swing and miss was always there but I’m sure he’s gonna bounce back
I'm very relieved that you're certain he'll bounce back! I feel a lot better now!
And he have a good times with the Mets.
Got my daily iTalk fix!
Honestly expected the D-backs and Madbum's albatross contract to popup
Banger. Thanks!
One thing i always wondered with deferred contracts was how does it affect the teams "reported payroll" like MLB doesnt have a Cap but they do have a payroll threshold 4:15 so Chris Sale for instance from 2024-2035 does his contract dissapear then in 2035 does his money still count toward the teams official payroll thats reported or is it just like part of the teams budget like a hitting coaches salary or whatever🤔
6:59 LOL aight man, that was funny as hell
This is baseball fiscal insanity!
Didn’t even realize I wasn’t subscribed. Well now I am!
Every year I text my mets fan friend on Bobby Bonilla day to remind him.
First ever yankee fan to have a met fan friend
While waiting for Strasburg to be reborn, Nationals fans can enjoy the stylings of Patrick Corbin and his well deserved contract.
The fact that the Nats gave up Bell and not Corbin with Soto is astounding to me.
So many of these videos involving deferred contracts miss the key point about a deferred contract. The lump sum is invested and the payments are done from interest on the lump sum and if done correctly and invested properly, benefit the team and the player.
It's important to make a distinction between toxic contracts and deferred contracts that are in fact not toxic.
As far as other famous deferred contracts, the reason Bobby bonilla's is so bad is because the specific investments his lump sum was tied up in expected to account for the interest payments to keep paying Bobby, were involved with Bernie Madoff. So basically the lump sum doesn't exist anymore and he's being paid directly out of pocket.
Jose berrios allowed the most runs and hits of any starter in the mlb last year. Only the first of seven years for $130 million. So happy that my team’s management are a bunch of crayon eaters
Of course you didn't look at some of the really older contracts like that that Mike Hampton signed from the early phases of free agency. But considering what the average players were making the time these were all so highly ridiculous contracts that panned out really bad for various teams during the 1980s before the luxury tax
I had been saying for like three years before Baez signed with the Tigers that he was probably the most overrated player in baseball. I was laughed at by both Cubs and later Mets fans.
These contract centric videos are great. They show how broken the free agency system is in baseball. It's borderline criminal. The MLBPA is a mafia organization. It's so broken and needs to be fixed.
I would add in the 6yr/24 million contract for Scott Kingery on the Phillies. He hasn't made it past triple a for a full season and this contract is considered one of the worst overpay
He played all of 2018 and 2019 for the Phillies. Not an overpay at all for a toolsy utility man who can legitimately play six positions. He was arguably the best player in the minors in 2017 and the best player in Florida during 2018 spring training, so the contract is understandable. He just completely lost command of the strike zone for some reason, to the degree that they couldn't even keep him on the roster as a utility man, let alone the star they envisioned.
@gs jackson. Big difference between dominating AAA and AA than having even a mediocre season in the pros. Evan white comes to mind with mariners. Guy got paid before he proved anything in the majors.
Davis was a monster dude can’t underplay that
That A-Rod contract must never be forgotten in such discussions. BOTH CONTRACTS! Should have traded that bum for Mike Stanton back in 2012 like I told them to.
He won MVPs and without him the Yankees don’t win the 2009 World Series.
Keep producing the fire content!
Honestly the Bobby Bonilla deal was not as bad as the David Wright Deal (7yr/138mil).
Did Javier dirty with that edit 🤣
Fun fact Bobby Bonilla also collects half a million from the Baltimore orioles from 2004 through 2028 every July first .
Is it too early to call the Christian Yelich contract a bad move on the part of the Brewers?
I think the most embarrassing thing for the Tigers about Baez is that they are going to be done paying Cabreras ginormous contract in 2023. How do these baseball teams not learn their lesson overpaying for players?
Also, Bobby Bo is paid $500K every year until 2028. Again, not as sweet at his Mets contracts, but the Orioles contract alone puts him between 5%-1% of US income earners.
I’m Bobby
Great. I am happy for Bobby and Chris as individuals. I don't feel sorry for MLB teams that lose out on stupid long term business decisions.
Javy swinging at sliders away EVERY TIME is so annoying.
Can only imagine
I'm a cardinals fan and he's an ex cub. Kinda funny to me. Sorry.
6:59 lol
I’m somewhat surprised Jordan Zimmerman’s deal isn’t on here
What about Vernon wells, Carlos lee, Barry zito or Jason bay?
Jacoby Ellsbury?
Bobby Bo was a good met the other contracts never had any chance of working 👹🔥🔥🔥🔥
Well played Bonilla.
This contract is the reason why it didn't surprise nobody that the Mets would follow their tradition of handing out atrocious contracts 🤣🤦♂️
Being a Rockies fan I fear Kris Bryant one will be a bad deal 😮💨⚾
As a Giants fan, thank you for taking him away from us
As a Cub fan, I'm thankful for both teams. I don't think he'll finish the contract. He'll retire before it's term.
@@philarends7555 why did he turn to shit after 2016?
@@jc24445 it started before 16 he chases low and away consistently as javy. Javy chased everything else too.😜
@@philarends7555 I feel like only Rizzo evolved as a player from that core
the compilation of javy swinging at literally everything hurts to watch lol
that javier baez strikeout compilation was sooooo brutal 😮 yikes
The Nats had 4 stars and managed to sign one of 2 that got injured to a long term contract lmao
They’re also still stuck paying Patrick Corbin
@@Wolf-wc1js yea because pitching is so important they paid Corbin and traded max
The moral of the story is to not sign anyone named Chris or any variation
Bahahaha
True. The other Kris Davis had a bad deal as well. The A's made the rare move of signing their star player to an extension only to have him get hurt early into the contract and never regain his form. They ended up trading him to the Rangers where he was eventually DFA'd and claimed back by the A's. He did not make an MLB roster in 2022 and played in Mexico and in an independent minor league.
The worst contract is either Sale or Strasburg. Sale hasn’t even pitched 100 innings since 2018. And strasburg hasn’t pitched a good year since 2019. Don’t worry Issac 99.5 percent of my watchers aren’t subbed 😂
I wouldn’t see sale as a terrible contract because even if he has terrible seasons in 23 and 24 he won’t be paid until 11 years later which helps the Red Sox as well as only being paid 10 million for 5 years which is nothing to an owner
Yall need to consider the time value of money. For the most part, the teams benefit by prorating these contracts. Think about it like this: a million dollars today is worth ALOT more than a million dollars in the future b/c a dollar today can be invested and accrue interest/ produce returns. Reason why its better to take a lumpsum payment vs annuity if you win the lottery!
Rendon sitting on the IL laughing
I WILL NEVA SUBSCRIBE!!! 😂😂😂😂
Strausburg used to throw 100 and he got tommy John early on in his career
Although these players will get paid for not playing. The clubs are getting somewhat of a good deal because of inflation 10million dollars today will be worth more than 10million dollars in 10 years. So slight discount
Baez was good in Chicago. Almost won MVP in 2018 even. He was just extremely shit this year and idk why. If he turns it around and starts producing like we know he can the contract will definitely be worth it.
So how many pitchers got great contracts because Spider Tack and now get rocked and aren't worth what they get for a single year?
Strasburg has a World Series Ring and World Series MVP
Jacoby Ellsbury has entered the chat….
Yes, I hate Javier Baez' contract, but as a Tiger fan, that is a small pill to swallow compared to the Prince Fielder contract. Granted, they pulled off a nifty trade to get Ian Kinsler (I loved him as a Tiger), but the Tigers had to eat some of Fielder's contract and Kinsler only lasted three years with the Tigers, then his career faded with a few other teams. Meanwhile, Fielder's career was brief and injury riddled with the Rangers. Even after the Fielder Trade, Kinsler's three years in Detroit, Fielder's retirement and Kinsler's retirement, the Tigers were stuck paying Fielder $6M until 2021 -- eight years after he left the Tigers. That deal still makes me vomit in my mouth when I think about it.
Even worse than Zimmerman?
@@alwillk Good question, it's hard to say. I remember at points telling people that I'd prefer the Tigers pay Zimmerman to NOT pitch for us. In the end though, at least we were pissing away money for a guy that was still on the roster, though mortifyingly terrible. With Fielder, I just couldn't stomach paying money to a guy that was gone, his traded counterpart was gone and both were retired. You're right though, both contracts were nauseating.
Bonilla still getting paid 🤣🤣🤣
Sale’s contract is weird and the Sox will
be paying him a long time, but despite bad luck with injuries the last two years and one uncharacteristic season the year before that at first ERA glance appears quite down (4.4 ERA despite a 3.39 FIP, 1.08 WHIP, 13.3 SO/9), he is just 34 and has a career 2.92 ERA, strikes out more people than most anyone, and finished top 6 in CY Young for SEVEN straight years before those unfortunate years. With how much people are getting paid nowadays, I’ll take a 34 year old with as good of career numbers as most any pitcher around for just $17m a year! I’d be very mad if we traded him.
I fully expect him to return to form. I do not think he is doomed for failure like some of the other examples here like Davis.
He's toast. Bad contract for a guy that will be injured soon
He’s absolutely done. I’ll be surprised if you see him much longer.
A contract’s AAV is what goes against the luxury tax. Deferring just allows the club to pay a certain portion at a later date(s) and have more cash on hand at the current time. In this case is was to invest with Bernie Madoff.
Oops.
The fans are the ones that pay for all of this. it's not baseball anymore, it's money. These guys are paid to play a game but yet they're paid so well any little thing brings them out of the lineup because they don't wanna risk hurting them.
I was going to say Chris Davis because that contract is the second coming of Bobby Bonilla, but then Chris Sale showed up and I went quiet
Did sale have his 💍? Or hand still broken ?
Chris sale has two years left it’s nothing compared to the others. He also is getting payed for being severely underpaid in his prime.
@@Alan-rw3ez I agree mate
Since Chris Sals might get traded I thought they were rumors for a Stephen strasburg for Chris sale trade
Moral of the story is be good at baseball so you can make insane money and do nothing later life
yo bro you gotta work on the background music, the background music in your videos has been getting progressively louder and at some points it was louder than you were in this video
Which parts?
does the player feel shame in taking money while being useless? also does the organization resent the player knowing that they know that they have it made?
You forgot Jacoby Ellsberry
Bonilla deal, while hilariously stupid (they literally end up paying him several times the value of his 6 million buyout), italso doesn't really matter to the mets financially. 1 million dollars is a drop in the bucket, even for the wilpons, let alone cohen. So I don't think it's the WORST.
Actually, the deal is worth the same as the buyout due to inflation and interest. Both were worth about 6 mil at the time of the deal
It pays to be hurt more than it pays to play
Baez produced 2.0 fWAR this year, which is about average for what BDE calculated 1 WAR is worth in millions of dollars. So far, the contract has been okay and that’s including how disappointing his first year was. Do more research, do better.
Javier Baez batted .238, 17 HR, 67 RBI and 147 strikeouts with only 25 walks plus 26 errors in the field. He gets paid $23.3M per season. For comparison sake, Jeimer Candelario batted .217, 13 HR, 50 RBI and 109 strikeouts with 28 walks plus 10 errors in 20 less games than Baez. He played 20 fewer games, because he was regularly scratched from the lineup for piss-poor performance. Had he played in 20 extra games, it would be reasonable to add on another 2 HR, 8 RBI, 18 strikeouts with 5 more walks plus 2 more errors. These are very comparable numbers to Baez. He was paid $5.8M in 2022 and he was also non-tendered by the Tigers. I'm pretty sure the Tigers are regretting the Baez contact. It may not have been worthy of this video, but it certainly deserves and honorable mention.
Are the Sale and Strasburg contracts that bad? They got good postseason performance and a championship out of them. If that was their goal then it doesn't seem like a bad contract for them. I mean Strasburg got World Series MVP so...
He was already WS.MVP when he got the contract, he got paid for what he did in that run. But it was already done, paid or not
That's cool and all but where do you draw the line? How much is a championship worth to the city, the club, the ownership? If I sign you to a 150 million dollar 5 year deal and you go out and play like a 10 war player, get an mvp, and we win it all. But your injured and never play another game but you're still owed 120 mil, was it worth it? To the player of course it was. But what about to the club, the city, the ownership?
@@senorpepper3405 Probably depends on the fanbase tbh. If met fans can get a WS out of the trillion dollar payroll Cohen has now they'll probably think it's worth it lol. I think it's safe to say the players they signed this offseason probably won't play out their contracts.
@@kevinatenine9797 the thing is that these contracts, especially multiple, can effect the team for years. Baseball is my favorite sport but these guaranteed contracts are getting so big now. They pretty much sign these guys knowing they'll be lucky if the player even finishes out the contract.
@@senorpepper3405 Yeah overall I think it's bad for the game. At this point there's no reason in being a fan of small market teams. The chances of having your favorite players stay past their rookie contracts is so low. It's hard to get invested as a fan.
Bobby Boo, The Mets still pay you !!!!
Some of these wont look so bad when we are paying $75,000 for a loaf of bread thanks to inflation.
fr
With the Correa situation happening now, I think this is what ownership is trying to avoid
But Judge signed for 360 millions a guy only have two good seasons?
The title says it all
3 million will not affect a MLB teams payroll half of these team will make 3 times that just off Steve cohen
i though cohen gave bonilla an extension
Que cagada ese contrato de Stargburg
Where’s Patrick Corbin
Uncle steve shits on Bobby
boo hoo billion dollar corporations loosing some change
Where’s Hosmers?
The Baez contract is a little misleading. He is still valued as a defensive catcher.
The nationals really picked Strasbourg and Patrick Corbin signing over Bryce Harper
Save some space for Correa here LOL
You haven't heard of Bobby Bonilla you don't really need to talk about baseball
People act like Chris Davis and Bobby Bonilla are the only two players to ever get a deferred contract. There's been dozens of players who've done it going back to the 1980's. It's been a negotiation tactic for almost as long as there's been free agency. It seemed especially popular in the 90's. It's really a win-win, owners get to spread payments out over many years and the player gets a guaranteed paycheck for years after retirement.
Pat Corbin 🤢
And yet you have these so called "fans" who cry about cheap owners. They would be singing a different tune if it were their money. And you can bet on that.
Complaining about non subscribers watching your videos seems highly ungrateful
Two words: Carlos. Correa.
