What amazes me is how effortless it looks. You watch a guy like Harper or Bellinger or Ohtani when they mash and you can see how much they wind up their swings. Schwarber just generates torque like it's nothing.

It is crazy to me that the Phillies are on paper, objectively the 3rd best team in the East. In literally any other division in baseball (outside of maybe the NL West), I think they'd be a shoo-in for the postseason.
As it stands, I'm not sure if they even have a 50% shot -- and that's coming from a Philly fan. The Braves and Mets are that good. It really sucks, but hopefully we can put together another impossible run next season.

  • @robbiegarnz7732

I think that they also put him at lead off because even when he strikes out he sees more pitches. With pitchers on such a short leash, a k is better than a two pitch pop out or ground out.

And also one of the reasons I'm skeptical about having Turner lead off. I like him as a #2 behind a guy who sees a lot of pitches. Especially when the monster Harper is right next. Two guys with a high barrel rate ahead of one of the smartest hitters in baseball either way is a great thing.

I'm a lifelong Cubs fanatic, and the releasing of Schwarber ranks among the biggest kick in the balls I've ever felt from the Cubs leadership. It's no secret the Cubs stars were floundering, playing very badly, and it was clear they needed a wake up call. Schwarber was the one summarily executed, and it was due to his lack of progress. But Schwarber had become a Cubs homegrown hero, and there was plenty of room on that roster to keep him as a .200 and 40 HR guy. Even with Rizzo, and Javy, and Bryant traded off, I'd still feel like I was watching the Cubs if Schwarber was the old hand on the team. With him gone, and no connection to the World Series remaining in the lineup, I don't feel like I'm watching the Cubs anymore; rather just another loveable losers lineup.

Bryant was the biggest disappointment. 15-16 we have a superstar for 10 years, than the gradual decline to simply an above average hitter with durability issues was the ultimate nut kick, especially 2018. Cubs are going to have to spend if they want to be serious contenders as the farm system is much thinner than it was a decade ago.

In high school, our batting lineup was odd but effective. Our typical lead-off man would bat 8th or 9th, which became extremely difficult on the pitcher in later innings. Some modern lineups seem to have mirrored what our coach did in the 90s by putting more contact hitter and speed at the end so the power hitters could put quick runs on the scoreboard early while at the same time having a higher potential of base runners for them to send in later.

  • @Gemnist98

But it would take out all speed and be a fairly basic sim. There has to be some system already made to choose best order of batter order. Maybe you should just order lineup as best OBS 1-9 vs the starting pitcher throwing's arm. I would like to see data that shows why we use as best hitters 3 and 4 as best with speed lead off. This is less common now, but has been historically.

Sportstorm can you talk about Ty Cobb as he is one of the most misunderstood player of all time and one the least talked about. He is kinda like barry bonds in the way he was stigmatised as although he is labelled as a racist he was in fact a major supporter of intergration of the major leagues, attending many negro ledge games and publicly speaking out against it

There's nothing weird about Schwarber's season. He literally just swings for the fences every at-bat. He's Adam Dunn 2.0. In doing so, his approach at the plate is overly aggressive and he will be pushed by his coaches/upper-management to fixate on developing launch angle because he's basically a gimmick as a player the front office wants to use to draw ticket sales. Which is fine and fair. It's fun to watch a massive homerun, but it's more fun to be in the post season. He embodies an approach that will never yield overall productivity at the plate and is unsustainable for more than a few years. 46 home runs and he didn't break the 100 rbi mark. Think about that. That means that, even if every home run he hit was a solo shot, he only came through 48 other times with a hit, a walk, or a sac fly in 155 games as a starter. The massive bombs are fun to watch when they happen, but the mentality of "I'm going to hit a massive bomb" at every at-bat ironically makes them less likely to occur and makes the game boring when there are consistent strike outs. 669 plate appearances. 200 of those PA's were K's. That means 30% of the time, he did nothing worth watching. As a fan, the so-called "launch angle" hitting approach (which is just an upper-cut) makes the game less fun to watch because there is less overall action on the field.

As of a week or so ago he was batting .180 yet still somehow had an OPS+ barely above 100. He has like no hits outside of HRs. All of these analytics and it never occured to them that a HR shouldn't be 4x the value of a single? All this focus on OBP for the guys following to strike out trying to hit a 500ft HR. Batting average and hits are literally demonized this season in favor of launch angle and exit velo. It's insane how people are looking at the game now and, with these analytics implemented, where's the gains in offense?
I'm glad I don't actually watch baseball because it must be frustrating as fuck watching everybody either swinging way too hard and striking out or not swinging at all and being walk merchants like Soto.
