Austin Riley: The MVP Candidate No One Is Talking About

  • Hey everyone!
Last year I made a prediction for a dark horse candidate to win the AL MVP. That player was Kyle Tucker, who had a solid season but he didn't take the leap I thought he would. So, I decided to make another pick this year: Austin Riley. While I'm not predicting he's definitely going to win the NL MVP, if there's a sleeper candidate to look out for, it's him.

I know the season is still very young but you can already see that Riley did a lot of work on his defense during the off season. I've seen him make some great plays already this year and I think if he keeps that up this could be his year.

I thought they would be talking about 2021, not 2015, as 2015 was almost 8 years ago now and I wouldn’t consider that “a few”. But I now realize that probably is what they’re referring to, and him almost winning while missing two months is probably referring to 2017 (even though he wasn’t even close to winning MVP that year either)

Riley isn't flashy and goes about his business. He doesn't seem to talk a whole lot to the local media. Let's be honest...Acuna is propped up by media more because he is flashy/shows off a bit and because they want black players to market to get more black youth into baseball, which MLB has stated is one of its main goals going forward. All good things, don't get me wrong (except that he does appear a bit immature and there are probably better idols to have in MLB). He was also a 20 year old phenom and youthful stars are great for baseball and young people looking up to these guys.

I truly believe one of the main reasons Freeman wasnt resigned is because, from a marketing standpoint, they wanted Acuna to be the poster child for the organization and Freeman was at least equally popular and was the last link to the "old Braves" of Bobby Cox and Chipper and so on.
