- Related to a post I made a long time ago in social media, I discuss about obtaining and improving your own style. There are a lot of younger artists out there who want to be original, and who want to stand out - yet they also want to have work that appeals to the mass audiences.

Anime Eyes + Disney Body + Photo Realistic Nose that's a completely different skin color from the rest of the body
Adventure Time Body + Sesame Street Nose + Disney Princess Eyes
Your own style will just come out eventually, just focus on improving your drawing

@@jesterssketchbook Some have made their mistakes the definitors of their style. But we all prefer to domain the fundamentals first.
But what if I made bad choices that limit me and now I'm stuck drawing with habits that get in my way?
@@JoshucaVA If you feel that, then observe again reality and try to copy it. Stop copying styles from what others interpreted about reality, go to the original source.
This is so true. Improve your art first. Focus on the fundamentals. Then you can be concerned with your style.

I'm 33 years old, and for almost 15 years I was doing a few drawings every month for fun but never go to in deep. Always was copie something I see and like it. And I dreamed about draw my own stuff and maybe do a comic, but with problems of auto discipline and consistency and too much imagination and high standars for myself I never like my aproach and results on drawing, only get frustated. And when i try to do my own style? just hate it and stop drawing.
But all that change a year and half ago when I decide back to study (I left at 16 so never finish high school) and start to get more discipline and consistent, then I back to draw but this time with no pressure on myself, no high standars and true desire for undernstand and enjoy it. Last 2 months I started to make slow, patiente and consciously studys (real life and other artists), anatomy, prespective, etc....and man! what a change! in 2 months I improve more than in 15 years!!! no more frustating with the results and I can draw for hours!
Now I dont feel pressure on find my own style because I know it will come with time if I keep doing the necesary steps. Hope this motivated others, is never late!

I look at other people's art now and it's not just like "oh that's cool they know how to draw and it looks good", it's now "Oh, damn, that's a good way to draw a nose in that position, I see what you did there". And then I try it out to see if it works for me.
I love you work and advice! You make me motivated and more humble. I just started a new rule for myself when creating a new character that I must practice the subject 15-20 times before starting. I had to create a horse character design once but had difficulty. So I scraped it and practiced drawing horses 20 times till I got a better understanding and flow. I found out it worked for me! Everyone can find their own path and style once you take the time to do the fundamentals. 🥰
I'm a career musician, but lately have been delving into the world of animation as it's always been an interest of mine. Much of this advice, especially the point about drawing influences is so applicable/translatable to music. Probably to the arts in general. Nice one!
Recently I’ve started something where i have to draw and animate in another style, it was definitely a learning experience

Idk whether it's just me, but having an art style is like having a fishing rod and tackle. You can multiple tackles or just one, but you still have a fishing rod to help you out when you want to fish. Not having an art style is like going fishing without a fishing rod, where I'm knee deep in the water with my hands and have no idea where to start. Sure maybe I'll eventually I'll catch a fish, but it's so much harder to get going with so much planning and extra work in it to continue getting them without an idea of what to do. A lot of people say having an art style isnt important but you dont understand how frustrating it is to sit in front of a piece of paper and have no idea where to start, because you dont know what type of eye or body style or even line work you want to do for that drawing that day. I cant just "sit down and draw" because there isn't a set drawing style that I can rely on, and it just feels like I'm waving my hands in the water for hours, hoping a fish would come by so I can catch it. It's exhausting. It's depressing. It makes me feel like a failure as an artist. People laugh and say "you dont need an art style you just draw!" If only it was that simple a solution.
This whole video gives me a new perspective on things for my own future art, I believe this video is a great tool I can look to for confidence in my characters/designs, thank you!
Drawing human anatomy is every medical student go through.
Some of my medical friends poor bone anatomy, just got a stick and tiny bone , very awkward, so at the end i'm a paid artist to get the anatomy art.
Is so worth it to be "love of drawing" really fun to draw to patient and showed when is going on with their sickness

Your style is what you like. You don't have to force it because it's already there. You already know what you love so don't stress about it haha
This video was surprisingly good for cleaning an old frying pan. Did you know you could cut off the remainings of roasted oil with a knife? Experimentations indeed
I was so excited when I saw this video in my feed; I really respect your opinions Toniko! This definitely helped calm me down a little about how I’m going to look “professional” after I graduate, and really put it into perspective on what I should do next.
i don't know if anyone has this but I get anxiety whenever I draw and I dont see any improvements on my own work and I was wondering if anyone else struggles with this and knows how to combat this?
Oh yea. I can relate.
Oh yeah, a lot of times I’ll be having an off day and the feeling of going backwards in my art totally kills my motivation for a while because I get afraid that it’ll happen again and I really did just get worse. I think it’s important to remember that everything you draw is improvement in some form! Even if you can’t see a visible difference you’re always learning more about how you handle your tools, your hand weight, etc. I find it helps me to do some drawings or sketches from life or photos that focus on the overall appearance rather than the details, or just touch base with the fundamentals every once in a while. Of course everyone has their own method, but that’s just what helps me!
@@Cranbeary thats a good idea. A lot of the time when i use references i get too intimidated with all the complexity instead of the general shape it is made out of. Obviously that makes learning very intimidating so thats a good tip, thanks for response
Whenever I feel like this I look at my art that is 1+ years old, it's easier to notice a diference the older the art. And remember that the more you practice, the faster you'll improve!
@@TheLaika923 agreed, something i want to focus on is not being to judgemental about my own artwork. Drawing should be for yourself unless you do it as a career but the thing is I only do drawing as a hobby, yet I'm extremely hard on my own drawings. This is a bad mindset to have and only leads to a lot of frustration so I wish I can work on this but I honestly dont know how. Hopefully I can improve myself and work on these bad habbits
Great advice, thanks god I fell into your video! I was really stuck in my "art style" for 2 years, when I started to drawing I felt that I was stepping out of my lineart pattern and that I was transgressing against my style which was almost untouchable as if it were a law, this frustrated me a lot.
Now I feel liberated as an artist!

I've also fallen in love with Danganronpa's style. But as someone who's always drilled it into myself to reference life vs art, getting inspiration from those things to influence my art will be... interesting.
What am I worrying about my own drawing style?
Well, I consider myself as cartoonist, not realistic one. But every time I coloured any cartoon painting, I see myself and knowing the fact that I do can make a realistic one. It's like a struggle, whether to change ship from a cartoonist to be a realistic one.
I mean, I know I could make any realistic painting for once in a while, but this constant whisper to change ship kept echoing till these days. Always had me worried if one day I'm starting to lose my sight for my main reason why I love sharing my works.

In a perfect world, there would be no 'style' only design. Style really just means 'inaccuracy to reflect reality in drawing'. But because everyone being a perfect Xerox machine would be a bit boring, design would come to the rescue.
In other words. In a perfect world everyone would have the ability to draw perfectly in accordance to reality (or as close as possible), but would still DESIGN in creative way.

I just don't know where to find tutorials for rotoscoped animations like Ralph Bakshi's Fire and Ice. I am a great fan of that specific artstyle, it looks like real but it is simplified if anyone reading this comment please help me atleast with some keywords to search for this kind of artstyle for animation.

Naturalism is the only style you should care about after you have a good approach to draw things how they look it is easy to mix it up a little bit and do it in a simplified way. Talent stands out. And the most important skill in drawing is how well you a can communicate how the look of things work. If you have no deep understanding you can only coppy working cartoon styles and can not design a new one.

But, in fact, I think I found mine. Well, I found like 2: an Eastern style and a Western style, both with a coupie of variations ("heavily focused and detailed", and "sloppy and carefree").
Now, what's next is to improve them.
