I’m one year into my personal project. That 11 months procrastinating, practicing, doodling, giving up. Then one month trying to make a beautiful animation and going for it. It’s took me 1 month of a few hours a day to make 15 seconds of animation. But so far I’m looking at it as 15 seconds = 1 year! 😂
I have a huge comic project, started a few years ago. Some periods I did absolutely nothing, but I'm extremely motivated to keep going. Currently at 60 pages, hopefully a lot more to come. Even if I don't do a single thing for it for months, I know I will get back to it.
📚Notes to take home: - Before beginning a project, write down all the benefits that completing this project will bring. Other things to think about are: Why start the project in the first place? What are exciting thoughts about the project? What are the best possible things that can come from finishing it? - Breakdown your whole process and make a schedule around it. Create a personal version of an animation pipeline (don't sprint, take your time, it's a marathon). - Record your process. This will help you concentrate and avoid procrastination and show you how long something takes to do. (Also allow you to watch yourself work and see where you are struggling, and give you a backlog of video content for social media.) - Use the pomodoro technique. There is a browser for this. - Have an event in mine for the deadline. Eg. Lauch on a holiday, or an event . - Show WIPs to trusted friends - Compromise and Eliminate unnecessary. (If something doesn't have a real purpose, consider removing it) - Be realistic within your lifestyle so you can still live a normal life. - Create incentives and rewards for reaching specific milestones.
Great video! I'll keep these in mind! One advice I have, especially for people that are just starting out with their projects, is just trying to finish your project. I got this advice from Ian Jones-Quartey (creator of OK KO). I see a lot of people starting on their first project (like comics or animations) and they get so caught up on making it look perfect that they give up out of just fidgeting around with it. It is important to try your best, but it is also important to see your projects as a learning experience. If you don't like something you did before, you already gained the knowledge on how to improve for your next project. So don't worry if something doesn't look as you want to, next time you'll do it better.
Great advice here. Thank you for the free sharing!!! I recommend playing this at .75 speed and stopping at each point. You can also look at Jeff Goins' book "Real Artists Don't Starve." A lot of the same points: collaboration, working in public and being flexible with the details but firm on your vision.
Amazing tips! I miss so much this format of video. It comes a time when its very dificult to increase technical skills with your software or your workflow, and this kind of tips happen to be more useful and make everyone grow no matter witch professional role you play :)
Toniko posted early on my birthday? hell yeas! but anyway, this was a very helpful video for me to learn tips on how to balance writing with fbf animation projects, thanks!
Thank you for this video! I had burn out, inactivity and lost motivation but your advice lit a fire in me. I now know what I should and (shouldn't continue) to do!
Thank you so much Toniko. I have all the pieces to my first Parody (Cod Modern Warfare) drawn out, but I went full sprint on all the drawings and burnt myself out. I'd say I accomplished 80% of it within a month. After that I haven't touched it in close to 2 months. It's really crazy but it would've been done and uploaded but I keep refusing to cut things out. It's over ambitious and it's my first time giving this much time into a project, I should instead worry about making SOMETHING, than trying to make something perfect and not get it done at all. Thanks for the advice. We really appreciate your help. *Also If anybody can let me know what software they prefer to use to animate lmk!* I'm currently using Paint tool Sai/ Photoshop for background art or Character pngs. Just a couple months ago i started playing with OPENTOONZ since it's free and it gave me a good feel of what it's like to animate but sadly, it crashes a lot. I'm going to try to make the move to Animate CC. Hopefully it's not too difficult to learn.
Just started making a new animation project " Near The Woods" . It was my passion project for a while now and now I am actually working on it as a artist
Awesome video I agree, I'm teaching myself to play guitar and I try to practice at least 15 minutes a day ,that's better then nothing at all. I love yor videos brother thank you for all you hard work making them two thumbs up
This is just like me, I draw some, I drop it, tackle something else, drop it. I'm glad you made this video as this will help me organize my thoughts and processes on how to tackle them. I have one long-term big project and ideas for shorts. I recently dropped some potential short ideas, but after watching this video might go back and re-visit them, and structure my projects. Thanks for making this video.
thanks for this advice....very helpful. :) I'm starting a personal animation project now and definitely need to hear this type of advice. Thanks so much. :)
I just want my animated movie, and series, to exist. I've wanted to do this since I was a kid, and the only think I truly want from it, is for my story to come to life. I'm a one man team right now, but I'm not going to let that stop me. If I get a more comfortable life as a result, that would be sweet, but I'm only doing it for me.
Keep doing the Great Work bro.... Hugh Respect... You are doing the Right Thing to motivate the new learner or like me a experience guy to share your knowledge and experiences with everyone. Lots of Love from India. Keep Rocking Up !!!!!
Hey that's Awesome! I've been talking about similar stuff in my own recent video (this how I found yours). I was toying with the idea of having a 'drawn presenter' like you did here, but eventually decided to shoot live instead. Also, your drawings are super cool and the film looks great :-)
3:21: I always work long finishing animations, and thinking that it’s not too late for the movie, the truth is I’m scared that nobody won’t see my animation movie, but no...not on my guts! 😇💚
Starting to work on my first animated short, thinking about the story, and how the characters will be for now ^^" Love these videos, really motivating !
My biggest problem is not liking how my project looks like. I'm trying to become an artist but whenever I start a personal project and don't think it looks good enough (Because I'm not skilled enough) I can't bring myself to continue :(
if you find yourself dissatisfied with passion projects, especially draw ones, just put it on hold for a while, and practice drawing until you feel you've improved. like, I tend to practice drawing on my project-characters, it makes it still feel relevant. but the most important part is to NEVER give up!
If you're not satisfied, practice your craft until you get better. But remember that you're always improving so your next project will always be better than the last one. It's better to finish a project now and move to the next one than keep it unfinished because you don't think you're good enough
I've been there. What has helped me is starting out really small. Like an actual small drawing on a small piece of paper, and with very little detail. Develop this small drawing until it's something you really like and THEN attempt to do a finished piece on a separate paper/digitally. Cause now you can use your little draft to guide you, so you don't waste any energy figuring out all the hard stuff at once. And like the previous comment said, keep going, you'll get better each time you put that pen to the paper. Don't give up and have fun with it!
Aw man, you guys are the best. These replies actually made me tear up a little bit ;w; Thank you so much for your words; I'll try to follow your advice and grow better as an artist!
I think the hardest part for me is that it takes me so much longer to achieve results i want because it really doesn't come natural to me... in fact i always feel like i am at square 1 😫😫😫 that makes it really hard to sit dpwn and start! 😮😫
I've been working on a personal project for like almost two years now (I feel a bit ashamed that it took me so long) but it seems the more I get closer to the end, the more I procrastinate. What's wrong with me ?!? ^^'
Now im procrastinating my project while watching at your video
The audacity lol
Work on it now!

I wasn’t able to go to school today so I decided to try finishing my story. I was quickly overwhelmed. This video is on time.

Opentoonz got an update, so you might want to check it out again.
But, if you're looking for cut-out animation software, try synfig and blender.
You're a big inspiration, man! Thanks for these videos!

Toniko: Personal projects take up a lot of your free time.
Me: Sorry Toniko but....
Personal Projects ARE my freetime!!!!😈😈😈😈
I've been working on a personal project for like almost two years now (I feel a bit ashamed that it took me so long) but it seems the more I get closer to the end, the more I procrastinate.
