    Toniko, this is one of the most best and balanced videos regarding different career paths in animation / entertainment, and what types of personality traits are needed or will do well in each path. Different personalities will thrive in different paths more than others, and I'm so glad you're providing a set of vocabulary and guidelines regarding the trade-offs of each path. Ultimately, it definitely comes down to the type of lifestyle one feels more comfortable with, at the end of the day.

    Also? Your animation and personal projects hit me really hard. I love how your lines are textured and alive, and I always see so much light in the eyes of your characters. Your stuff really inspires me and makes me want to animate in my own personal way, not be like whoever I think is good.

    I love this. I think I'm alright with art and I really enjoy all aspects of it, animation included. People tend to look at me funny when I say that I'd be happy working as either an artist or in a flower show. TBH all that matters to me is that I can live making things I enjoy.

      When I was 15, I kept hearing people say things like "just do it!" and I was like, "okay...how?" Finding the "just do it" phrase a little too cliche, I kept watching animation tutorial after tutorial trying to prepare myself. Two years later, it FINALLY clicked. I was at the annual National Portfolio Day event to have my work reviewed. One of these people told me something that has really stuck to this day. Here I was presenting digital art, none of which had anything to do with animation or had much of a "story-drive" at all. It was my comfort zone. "If you're aiming to get into animation, why does your portfolio say otherwise?" Though I was researching constantly, I was rarely animating. That was the moment I realized that just like you, I was just simply, afraid. Picking up the pen in a program I had almost no real experience with was terrifying to me. About two months after the event, I made a decision. Even though I still felt unqualified, I would quit stalling and start doing. Just "do," don't think about the past or future, because failing on a daily basis is the most important part. So that's what I did. It's what I'm still doing. I'm 17 now and working on my first film reel for a scholarship opportunity. What surprised me the most is that I'm actually getting somewhere with it. I'm animating, and I'm more than just happy. I guess what I'm saying is, that's what "just doing" did for me. I went so much farther with it in such a short amount of time than the two years of "Wait! I'm still preparing!"
      Now, don't be afraid to tackle it head-on. I'll be rooting for you both!

    I'm a helping hand kind of person. I don't have the vision myself to see a whole project through. But if I can really see someone else's vision I have no problem lending what talent I have to help them see their vision through. I tried getting into music production as an assistant engineer. But every studio I went to were very intependant and werent looking for any assistants. That kind of haulted my progress. I would love to animate, I never found a software I was comfortable enough with. I loved drawing on an iPad.

    Toniko, thank you so very much for this episode. As mostly externally driven person I was wondering in the first place, if people like me even exist in the industry. Second, if I am "deserving" to join the teams of the extraodinary people who dedicate their whole existence to their craft. And finally, if I am even able to make it in this competitive market. I am commited to constand learning and development, but the intensity and extent to which I can practice on a daily basic is different from other people.

      I'm by no means a professional but I guess that depends on how experienced you are. If you have never animated something then just try doing a short animation. Don't bother yourself with theory, fundamentals or production value.
      After all, that's how the great masters did it.

      Start with free classes on animation. There's no way on earth you'll succeed in animation without keeping in mind the 12 principles in animation. Learning how to use animation software comes afterwards. Toniko has free tutorials on his channel too. But hey, check out aaron blaise's free Animation class on his website.

    • @juantsu2000
      @juantsu2000 4 года назад +4

      @@rivuuuh The 12 principles are important, yes, but at the end of the day, they're not essential.
      Hayao Miyazaki doesn't follow them to the teeth, yet his movies are among the best in history. René Laloux (The Savage Planet) also doesn't use them as much.
      What's most important is realizing that animating is just as easy as drawing two frames (Captain Underpants) that create the illusion of movement. It doesn't have to be Disney-like levels of smooth and realism, but understanding and appreciating that animation gives the user the tools to create worlds and amazing characters from nothing is far more important for a beginner than studying the 12 principles in my opinion.

    I'm currently learning 2D Animation on my own since schools are too expensive. Starting to work on my first animated short but kinda getting stuck on a part of the story.
    I kinda want to just do whatever so I can actually start working on it, but I want a decent story at the same time.
    Also, for now I'm not sure what to aim for a job, but I'm starting to think that maybe I should consider aiming for storyboard stuff. I like doing thumbnails of key elements of the story.
    But with my current progress, not going to get professional in years.. not sure what to do until then. :(
