    My big issue with CCS sites is they are almost always small sites. 4 chargers is a little bigger than average. Too many have two chargers and of course too often some of the chargers are either broken or derated (charging slow than they should). EVgo, EA and others need to copy Tesla more and make the smallest sites 8 dispensers.

      On a previous pod they talked about why that happens. Long story short, utility companies are slow to provision power for charging sites, if needed. So companies wanting to get chargers up ASAP would rather work with the capacity they can get, first.
      Tbf there's a good reason for utility companies to be somewhat conservative, but, just like all old-school industries, there are ineffenciences that a lot of current leaders have no incentive to address 🥱 It's not like we'll ever stop needing their services, "too big to fail", etc

    I only need/use DCFC stations on our 3 maybe 4 road trips each year. So the other 48 weeks we charge at home and have SOLAR. So we don’t worry about cost when traveling but we have 4 basic requirements: 1. UPTIME, 2. AVAILABILITY, 3. FACILITIES and 4. CONVENIENCE. We are 72 and we use charging stops for BIO breaks. Anything else is a bonus.

    V3 superchargers should not receive NEVI funding. The intent of the voltage range requirement is “to support high-voltage battery packs above 500v” in standards published on 2/28/2023.

      It could be that site has been scheduled to be upgraded to a V4 supercharger site. I have heard of this at Tesla sites that have the built-in CCS adapters. They basically put in the V4 chargers prior to updating the supporting infrastructure to V4. Of course there is also the concept that some charger availability is better than none. There aren't that many 800 volt vehicles out yet but if I had one I would much prefer the option of charging at a lower rate over no charging option at all. Not much different than when charging at a lower rate at a level 2 charger with a non-800 volt EV.

      @@bryanmiller2023but the requirement is that they be able to delivery 150kW to any car (or that cars maximum). The 500 volt Tesla system does not meet that. They may compile with the letter of the poorly worded law. But not the spirt. HKG is selling thousand’s of eGMP cars each month in the 800v class. I believe they are the number 2 platform right now behind Tesla

    Honestly, I drive a Bolt. So even DC fast charging is like a level two & a half charger. 😜 I always charge at home anyways. But it’s exciting to see expanding infrastructure. I wanna see more supervised sites. I’m sick of the vandalism or just plain broken equipment. We gotta lower the barriers to entry.

    Minnesota is conditionally awarding NEVI money this week! Haven't heard the details yet. It's only 2 1/2 years since the legislation was passed....geez.

    Here in my home state of Ohio, things are plowing ahead. Currently, twelve NEVI sites are under active construction. DriveOhio already released the second round of NEVI funding for the next tranche of Fast Charging sites. Francis Energy was the big winner, getting over half the site awards. Love to see the progress, but it makes the lack of movement in some neighboring states *coughWV* all the more frustrating.

    Expensive might not be such a bad thing. If I need a charge while I'm on a road trip, I'm not really worried about the price. I'll take a good hassle free charge at an expensive rate anytime over the alternate. Electrify America take note....Stop giving free years of charging, especially since you're only putting 4 stations at places. Surely someone who buys a Porsche Taycan can afford to pay for a session of DC Fast charging...

      Agree. If the majority of ev owners charge at home, aren't higher rates when traveling acceptable? How else are these companies to turn a profit?

      I'm an ID.4 owner and I agree. I can see keeping the price down for Level 2 charging, but for fast charging sites along travel corridors, if the premium comes with a great service experience, that's worth it. The price will prevent abuse (of the system and of the battery!).
      I "only" get 500kwh for free with EA for the 2024 model year, but I mostly charge at home. On road trips, I don't only try to hit EA chargers since I'm still paying less than using gas. When youtubers do stuff like that, and charge to 100 unnecessarily, I find it a bit tacky, it seemed like common sense that public charging is meant for those who need it the most. I almost get secondhand embarrassment from the bad reputation some previous model year drivers built up for us ID.4 folks at EA stations 😅

    How can the EV driver travel knowing what the different EV chargers charge per kWh? If you drive a Tesla the price is in your Tesla as you plot your travels to superchargers. It sound like Pilot and other gas stations that host a EV charger can charge what ever they want. Taking advantage of NEVI funding but charging above the average kWh rate. NEVI should have a kWh rate in the funding to protect the EV driver from being overcharged. Can you develop a spreadsheet showing the kWh cost down a major interstate across the US. Like I-10. This might open up eyes. Take care.

    most travel corridors are already somewhat covered by DC charging especially Tesla, of course it could be much better but where I really see a need is rural parts of the country, I'm in Nevada and most of the state outside of the interstate highways has very little to no DC charging options. There are a lot of smaller towns where your only option is some type of AC outlet and those towns are over 150-200 miles away from the closest DC charger.
    As for Tesla NEVI funding I think they should not be awarded any funding until they get 800V support. Every other DC network can support 800V so this really should not be that difficult for them.

    Enjoying these updates. I am in Michigan and have been following all the mid-west state conditional awards. What has surprised me is how inconsistent the publicly announced data has been. Some states list exactly who is awarded as the CPO, some don't. Some states list the exact address of the awarded site, some just give the general AFC location. Some states have listed the award amount and the committed private funding match, some states have listed the award amount and then some states (Indiana) don't even release how much money each site is getting. I look forward to the hopefully coming soon award announcements from IL and MN to see how they compare.

    Where the heck is Tesla V4 supercharging hardware? Many of my road trips are dealing with V2 still. Elon is not doing anyone any favors by the “child’s play” charging rates and hardware from several years ago, all the while still not having anything beyond V3 yet. What a self-inflicted own goal that has been.

    How does the NEVI grant work? The funding is granted to states, and then the states grant the money to private companies?

      Money is earmarked for states to disburse to contractors who bid on sites defined by an approved deployment plan. Deployment plans have to meet state and federal requirements and each state needs one for the funding. If you're a business owner, you can request for your business to be a site host for a contractor to build on. Of course your business has to be on the approved route to be considered. Northern States seem faster at getting this done.

    Probably need to do an episode explaining why PlugShare ratings are so bad and often misleading. The EA chargers at our local Walmart are rated as 10 but I can tell you that half of them are either not working or are derated to low power levels on any given day. And they are located in the busiest row of the parking lot right in front of the store so pulling in and out is not an easy job. We stopped going there altogether.

    Talking about inclusivity, I don't hear it mentioned that 750,000 pre 2021 Teslas are unable to use most Federal funded NEVI funding sites, except for the ones supplied by Tesla. I don't think that all cars from other manufacturers equal that number. And they can still use magic docs at a reduced speed.

    Very confusing. Pilot should show prices in BOLD print just like a typical gas station does. And if they really want to help consumers show the kWh vs per gallon cost comparison to hopefully prove EV's save you money to fuel.

    It's great they are installing charging sites but why only four chargers? The smallest number of chargers i have ever experienced at Tesla sites is five and that site is known for being busy and occasionally folks having to wait. Typically Tesla sites have at least eight chargers and often more. Hopefully they are including the additional infrastructure needed to easily add additional chargers.

    The NEVI voltage rule is vague as it appears to allow a charging port to the ability to qualify if the port outputs ANY voltage 'between 250 and 920 volts, supplying power to all vehicles whose packs operate in those voltage ranges, AS LONG AS the charging port can output a minimum of150kwWh to a vehicle. Do the EVGo cabinets output voltage all the way to 920v?

    It would be interesting to have someone from a charging network on the show to talk about how much time it takes to pick a location to go live. Discuss what road blocks they are seeing that delays a site from either being built or being turned on.

    Tesla’s inability to charge tens of thousands of EV’s above 150kW because they failed to upgrade their hardware disqualifies them for funding. If we were all in that boat and every EV charging supplier did this we’d need double the chargers than we have now. There is a reason for the voltage requirements that everyone else abides by. It is to make the most of installations‼️ It’s time Tesla abides by the rules or looses their funding. The choice is theirs. Their CyberTruck owners would appreciate some proper charging and thousands of others appreciate them abiding by the voltage requirements! 🎯 15:32

    That Tesla still has no 800V chargers out in the wild and gets NEVI funding is a complete joke Let's look ahead 3-4 years to around 2027/2028, who cares about 400V chargers except for affordable EVs in the sub 35k range...? Sure that is a big market as well, but 400V EVs can charge at 800V chargers anyway but 800V EV charge quite slow at 400V chargers. So 800V chargers should be the priority.
    Most compact/mid-size EVs will come with 800V by that time, it has become the industry standard in China and Europe is at least trying to catch up with the 800V architectures of the upcoming Merceses CLA, EQA, EQB, C-Class sedan and SUV. With BMW's 800V "Neue Klasse" platform used for the i3 sedan and IX3. Maybe Audi could use a 800V Xpeng platform for the Audi A4 or the 800V PPE platform of the Audi A6/Q6.

    I am happy to see more chargers coming online, however, I see a big problem a few years down the road. NEVI requires CCS or J1772 for level 2. With the entire industry now going NACS, I see a lot of these being obsolete quickly if not retrofitted with the NACS plugs. This requirement needs to be updated for the future of NACS. Stop putting in CCS chargers in the ground.

    I don't like or use the EVgo much as there charges don't give great speed and are way over priced. The Mercedes Benz sites with chargepoint seem to be great around here. South East USA. NEVi seems to be behind and there are others putting in chargers . 7 charge uses the same crappy delta chargers that EVgo uses which are rated 180 but never work at those speeds. EA seems to be the best around here. Tesla doesn't have many magic docks setups in our area.

    The success of EV transportation depends mainly on availability and reliability of AC public charging. This obsession with faster and faster DC charging only helps some RUclipsrs clocking and charting their charging sessions to the tenth of KWs. Build local AC chargers in shopping centers, malls, town center garages, commuter stations, public schools and government centers. The issue here is to discourage abuse by limiting charging session times (with heavy fines on violations), charging dispensers with no charging cables (bring your own cable), etc ….

      There are people who depend on public charging, so I can see charging time limits only to a point. But I agree with a "bring your own cord" system for level 2 charging. People can be nuts. And, along with towing, it can help with any ICE-ing issue if you have a long enough cord...😊

    P FJ ceo was on cnbc and said the biggest issue they were having with DCFC sites was around pricing. I am sure this feeds back to the demand charges from utilities.

    NEVI so far is abysmal. $5B and 7 sites total? States, as usual, are horrendous at managing things like this. The red tape is ludicrous. This needs to be done yesterday, not tomorrow. The other ludicrous rule that these cannot be installed at rest stops is just more government stupidity since electricity often already exists there. Arizona has been planning on this for two years and has yet to even break ground on any single site. The map showing potential sites is now 18 months out of date.
    I’m 100% in favor of the idea of this (the government has been propping up and funding petroleum and e85 for decades) but the deployment and actual rollout, so far, is a total embarrassment to America.
    Build them and the EVs will come.

    Remember that the NEVI program is part of the Biden Bi-partizan Infrastructure Law. Each state received an allotment of funds based on the formula in the Law. The allotments are split up over four years. Many state DOTs had trouble with administering their funding because it is outside their normal system of funding highway construction. I expect Ohio DOT is getting a lot of calls from other states asking how they did their program.
    Indiana DOT announced in March awarding funding for 39 sites around the state. They expect the various sites to open in 2025. They announced a second round of funding grants for later in the year. Their soliciting for applications does not follow what they originally proposed in their NEVI plan, which focused on individual highways. The currently funded sites are spread around the state.
    With respect to the Tesla NEVI sites, I expect, if you read the actual standard, the requirement for charging levels is for providing charging within the range specified. Not covering the full range. Still the low rates for 800 volt cars is something Tesla needs to correct now they are rehiring their Super Charger team.

      Is there a website for Indiana that shows where the 39 sites will be? There definitely needs to be something between Bloomington and Evansville along I69. There isn't much of anything along that stretch at all (restaurants etc). Yes, it's a relatively newer highway, but things need to start propping up, along with DCFC. The Washington exit would be ideal.

    Ohio EVGO site is somehow removing bad posts, most to do with its pricing. Price is gone from the listing, but a recent comment shows 70 cents per KWhour. Total failure of government funding charging site that Pilot is overcharging for. Why would this be allowed by the NEVI group of Ohio?? Comments state to go to nearby EA chargers to avoid the over-pricing. New Buckee's coming soon 40 miles west in Huber, Ohio. I charge in Columbus at OSU Center for Automotive Technology, had a snack at their picnic table and toured their GM EV1.

    The west coast has struggled to announce any NEVI awards. It’s absolutely nuts. That said, Washington State has two concurrent state level programs (ZEVIP and WA State EV Charging Program) that have awarded around $100 million in both DCFC and L2 charging.

    IMO, NEVI funded sites should have 1000 V capable chargers. Tesla got funding for 500 V superchargers on a technicality, but there will be more 800 V cars as time goes on. We need to put 500 V max chargers behind us.

    For the Bank of America location, Francie says it is a "good location, near the interstate," but does it have restaurants and 24/7 restrooms nearby? Is it a walkable location, or is your life at risk crossing busy streets to get to a restroom? Is it well lit? In short, why is this Bank a "good location" to stop and charge.

    That Kingston one is a terrible location, I went there right after they opened, it's in a bank parking lot. No restrooms, and nothing nearby

    Any Evolve NY users that can answer this question that I cant seem to confirm on their site. Do you need to use EAs app at the Evolve NY sites? Is there a price benefit to be an EA monthly users? I drive a Tesla but I stop in Kingston NY all the time to charge. Some times the Tesla charger is full (and its a slower v2) and I have a CCS adapter so I might use the new site there for Evolve NY/EA. Thanks

    The NEVI grant only applies to Teslas V4 chargers? The only car that Tesla makes that can take full advantage of V4 is Cybertruck? Tesla has only sold 4000 Cybertrucks so far, so they would not have enough data to select optimized locations.
    Based on these answers, it makes sense for Tesla to slow down their new charger installs and concentrate on upgrading older locations to V4. This could explain why they laid off the majority of the Supercharger team. The game changed requiring a new strategy and a new timeline.
    There is no upside for Tesla to install any additional V3 or lower chargers.

      @@herbfst Fast chargers yes, level two chargers, not so much. I just put a level two charger in my home. If I can do it so can the vast majority of small businesses.
