So Cold the Canal Froze ! CSL Assiniboine arrives Duluth MN breaking ice.

- Welcome to 2018 ! The CSL Assiniboine is the 1st ship for me to catch this year. The Monson was the 1st arrival, I decided to sleep a little longer. The Canal has a thin veneer of ice, which the Assiniboine cuts right through, also a great salute for the fans on the piers from the ship !

Me: I wonder if ill hear the ice cracking
Ship horn: WWUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Tell me about itt😂😂
And it gets better 🤣🤣
Thanks for the warning 😂
I had the volume cranked too
Hahahahahah😂
I also didnt like it. it felt like a ship is about to crash the freaking house (I live near sea). WTF. Too loud.
I’m glad he honked his horn letting any boats and jet skis that might be out there know that he’s coming
🤣

😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂🤣😅🤣 cause I was definitely like 🧐
Yup uh huh
I'm glad he honked his horn to warn the ice he's coming
Its likely there's a lock there and they have to honk to tell the controller to get ready
I am glad he honked his ice to tell the horn to get breaked

What a beautiful winter day. Gorgeous blue skies, sea smoke on the water, temperatures cold enough to freeze the channel--it doesn't get any better than this.
80 degrees, low humidity, slight breeze sounds like a much better day.
@@Youre_Right no 80 degrees is still hot even if you meant Fahrenheit.

Yes it does. Literally any warm day.

it is a tiny big boat

I turned the volume all the way up for like .25 seconds when they first started and got the shit scared outta me
@@spadehaze1541 Ha, yup it ain't good lol
I wish i was warned i had it full blast
I wish I read your comment before I started this video
There should be a sign at the back of the ship that says "We break for nobody" (Space Balls) lol
I wonder if their radar is Jammed

Who would go out in that freezing weather to watch a freighter coming thru? Like all the other people there, I would dammit. What a site......ya just don’t see that every day.
You’ve never met a Canadian before have you?
Krazi canuck Do all Canadians not understand sarcasm
I do see them everyday thank you very much
I would because I've never seen it in person but I imagine it's just like anywhere else if you live there and it's just part of the environment you'd probably rather stay in and be warm
Krazi canuck 🤣 facts it’s like Canada’s irrelevant to the rest of the world

Captain jack: "we float, we move!"

Captain: Hold my beer.
Shouldn't it be hold my cup of non-alcoholic beverage?

Probably was holding his beer!
Let me show you something!
This is where I first saw Lake Superior.
Of the 43 states I went to hauling freight, Lake Superior was the most awesome sight. A giant freshwater ocean smack in the middle of the country.
Californian it actually smack on the edge of two countries. But i get what you mean..she is a beautiful sight to behold..
You could say its smack in the middle of our continent..

it's so cold it makes my bones hurt just watching this
The anchors have beards.
As a Minnesotan, we just look at this and immediately know just what it feels like out there, despite the sunshine. The kind of cold that instantly freezes all the snot in your nose as soon as you take one step outside.
But it’s so much better than the heat and humidity
Didn't know my volume was all the way up. Now even the neighbors children down the street know.
Absolutely love Duluth MN. Recognized the canal instantly!
If you lived anywhere in northern Minnesota you instantly recognize this canal.
So cool! The sound of the ice is awesome.
Born and raised in Duluth and never get tired of the big boats
You and I are on the same page.... 😁
@@PaulScinocca , I am 81 years old and was born in the winter of 1938. We lived on Park Point for years, but snow was not tolerable for our family. We moved to Duluth Heights for some reason and after High school, joined the Navy. Retired after 22 years and now live in Georgia. About every five years I go back home and go down to the pier and watch the boats. Nostalgia kinda sets in. God bless
I love watching these from North East Uk. I know it takes time and effort to prepare and just wanted to say thanks. More please!
Thank you ! The 2018 shipping season usually starts around March 25.
Not the start of the season, it was the end of the season for shipping, just the 1st ship of the new year, a little deceiving comment by me I guess....
@@PaulScinocca nice
How sweet to view this video, simple and astonishing. Thank you for sharing.
He was having fun with those horns
Indeed!
Those horns would make a great wake up alarm
He was just saying hello, followed by a response. 1 long, 2 short.
Second horn was better.
@@MilwaukeeF40C The second horn is the bridge responding to the ship's greeting.
Let‘s hold on for a moment and appreciate the fact that nobody ruined the video by neither adding crappy eurodance music nor shake the camera like on a trampoline nor having endless intros nor talking/yelling/screaming/commenting from the off.
The video is just perfect without any of this. Thanks, mate!
Smooth sailing through the ice sheets ! Seasonal weather wonderland! 🌬❄🌨
Great video never gets cold enough for the Belfast lough to freeze over down where the docks and shipyard are,, great show case for the ship lover to visit your area plenty to see 🛳️🚢🚢🚢☘️☘️☘️👍👍
A whole 1/2" of ice, wow.
Wow you must be fun at parties
🤣😂🤣😂🤣 i was anout to say it, lmao its cool to watch though...
It can break a lot more then an inch 🤣
It’s the biggest fresh water lake in the world you idiot
For something that large to freeze is crazy. We live in Duluth MN. It gets -60 so yeah when one of the largest fresh water lakes in the word freezes yeah it’s crazy
Great... the fucking horn woke my wife up and now she is pissed.....
Should’ve used headphones :v
Roger Eide and you took your time to comment on this
🤣🤣mine is pissed as well
Roger Eide should've rewind & played it again 😂
Roger Eide yeah tell her it’s a whaler and she should prob swim away as fast as she can
After shoveling snow for 2 hours, my face looks just like the bow and anchor holes on that thing! LOL.
I work for a shipping company and a cargo cruise ship horn came through once. It was 6ft tall 5 ft wide and had its own electric motor that weighed 300 lbs. The horn it's self I think weighed 800.
Jesus Christ I’ve been away from Duluth for too long I forgot how loud those ships are. Even thru video
I remember when dad was a shipmaster throughout the great lakes..when the lakes froze hed come home for the winter and leave in the spring..
DAMN! That crunchy snow sounds COLD 😎😎😎
I never saw a big ship like this one and I always enjoy watching big ships
James Dillard dude you should take a look at the Tregurtha or at the Barker!
Need a horn like that for my mo-ped
Use it in Toronto
It might be a little heavy for your mo-ped but there are many videos on RUclips of people mounting rain horns in cars and scaring the hit out of people. I don't know if there are any ship horns in cars though.
Yes, Yes there are videos of ships horns but they require pick up trucks. I also found one comparing the two types of horns.
The ship emerging from the smoke low-key something you'll see in movies
Great !! and regards....well done ! This is the perfect video for looking in July ;))
Makes me want to get my winter stuff on just watching it!

magnificent. Not gonna let a little ice slow you down.
Hey. Love what you are doing here. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into filming these and uploading them....every single day at this point. Great job. Seriously interested in your story...what's behind the drive to do this. :-)
Just love the ships, pretty sure it could be some sort of "addiction"..... The vessels still to this day fascinate me, every day is a new view of the lake and harbors I visit. Bottom line, it is just so fun. Thank you!
This ship has better ice breakers than I do...
This is a gentle wind, on a mild spring morning, in Saskatchewan, Canada. What most consider frigid, we consider a mild chill. I would have it no other way. I live for the cold, wind, ice, snow, dark, and beautiful wildlife.
Yeah right
Kind a like watching the grass grow. However you get a thumbs up for being out there in those conditions

I was there that day with my camera! I believe it was -38° if I'm not mistaken. Sounds crazy, but it was such a beautiful sunny winter day. My hands had to thaw getting back to the car though! Great vid 👍

Looks like canal park Duluth, nothing in description though
we have some of the largest cruise ships come to a town close to where I live and I really need to get down to see them!

lol no argument there!
Hear the ice squeaking. Great video. Glad I don’t live in the cold there.
The size of that thing wow, it's huge!! 😲

Looks like a ghost ship in the beginning
coming threw with a load of cold beers
That’s a freaking huge ship!! 😱😱
I just love when the beast come behind the fog.
At first I was thinking "holy shit that guy is coming in hot,"
Add more fog, and minus the ship's horn, and that could be the opening cinematic of a sci-fi/horror game based on exploring a huge cargo ship that came in from nowhere. It crashes into the dock, and you are the port authority person assigned to search it.
pistonar you should get out more.
@@DMWBN3 Oh, I am sorry. I have an imagination and the visual of that ship coming in sparked it. Sorry to have upset you.

RIP whoever had earbuds
So for anyone not not familiar this is the Duluth harbor in Duluth Minnesota. The ship is honking its horn to let the Lift Bridge controller he is entering the Harbor. Ive seen alot of jokes about honking the horn to let the ice know its coming but this was the real reason which is why you heard a second horn after the first. That is what the bridge horn sounds like and it sounds so much louder in person.
What a serene sight
Possibly a dumb question, but is there a schedule of when ships pass through the canal?? I'd love to see that in person. The video footage is great but to see the true size comparison has got to be unreal.
302hobronco go to harborlookout.com has the schedule of ship arriving and leaving.
The ship is coming into a port maybe Duluth, Minnisota.
Iam surprised there are so many spectators, seeing how cold out it is.
These frozen arrivals are big business in Duluth :-)
It's Duluth, most of those folks haven't taken their long johns out of storage yet.
The acoustic energy from the damn horn heats the whole village for a month lol.
Great looking ship!
I think so too!
There's something calming about watching these vids. I would NEVER live here though. Too damn cold! Watching this I got cold and its 95 degrees here. :-)
