⚓️Way over Speed Limit! Ship 'American Mariner' arrives Duluth, MN

- This is my first video with a brand new view from the top of the south pier in Duluth, MN. I was able to see the 730 ship American Mariner arrive from Lake Superior and watched it pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge. The American Mariner was really speeding coming through the ship canal! Almost 12 knots! Being at the top of the pier gave me the best view of the crew members working on deck!
More information about the ship American Mariner: www.americanste...

§ 162.110 Duluth-Superior Harbor, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
(a) No vessel greater than 100 feet in length may exceed 8 miles per hour in Duluth-Superior Harbor.
(b) In the Duluth Ship Canal:
(1) No vessel may meet or overtake another vessel if each vessel is greater than 150 feet in length (including tug and tow combinations).
(2) An inbound vessel has the right of way over an outbound vessel.
Honestly, I was just trying to say it was fun watching the Mariner going fast with the title. I didn’t really know there was a real speed limit. 😱😮
@@vibewithmike I didn't know there was an actually speed limit
It's OK vibe. You ratted them out. This why you should always have a pilot. Not someone who is racing to get to the pizza parlor.
@Vibe with Mike ⚓️ same here man I did not know there was a speed limit either. It's good to know, I don't want a ticket when I'm in my boat
Should we install a radar detector on our boat?😂😂😂😂
Another nice video Mike. No music, no drama, nice camera work, and nice comments. Keep em coming.
Jim, I will keep them coming brother! It’s Monday, so I hope you have a wonderful week ahead my friend. Thanks for the positive and very motivating comment!🙏
I have never ever in my life thought I would want to go the Duluth, now it is a must visit! Thank you for sharing 😀
You have to check out this video. This will show you outside of the city a little on the water. ruclips.net/video/LjhjPTlJ4hI/видео.htmlsi=7koidsstUPiOHlIl
Wow,beautiful day! It's nice to see that spring has finally sprung for Y'all. Take care Mike,God Bless!!!😊
The good weather is finally here
What a new perspective for us all.I wondered what that rhythmic sound was all this time and now know it is the Crew un-fastening the latches on the Hatch Covers. You bring us new and exciting things each time a ship appears whether on its arrival or departure. Thanks, again, Mike!
This is an older video, I’m so happy you found it. Yes, that is exactly what it is. They are taking their time to unlatch those hatches on the deck.
Damn...that thing WAS humming right in there! That's pretty rare to see. Love the videos!
Yes it was! I’m really glad that you like these videos. I’m going to keep them coming for you my friend!
I like the elevated view from the South Pier best
John, I agree with you. I was able to see the crew at eye level. That was pretty cool. Do you think I should do that more frequently? Or just add it in here and there?
Wow she's really cruising! Awesome video and commentary.. Thanks Mike
I love those horn blast signals. It was great. Thanks for the vids.
There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
Hi Mike, loving your weather!!! Love Duluth!!! ❤ she is really moving in!!!
The weather is great right now. 70° tomorrow, Saturday.
She was cruisen right on in. Good looking ship. Enjoyed the video and BE SAFE OUT THERE.
Thanks Henry! I hope you had a great Friday. The weather supposed to be beautiful tomorrow in the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota.👍⛴️👊
@@vibewithmike Sounds like the makings of a fun weekend, enjoy!
I agree
Great pictures as always. With that lady going that fast must make for an interesting left turn.
Maybe the captain was going to do some drifting?
Grew up on Park Point. South pier was a great place to hang out and watch boats and tourists..
Nothing like the edible garden they have right now in Lafayette Square/Park. Park Point is number one!
Way to go Mike. Fast ship is a good one this time of year
I’ll take a fat ship every day, Justin
Anything goes wrong there ain’t no stopping that. ❤
That’s exactly right, like a runaway freight train
Nice to see American excellence and engineering in motion...
It’s an awesome ship. Thanks for watching my friend. Have a wonderful memorial day weekend.👍⛴️
Another cool video, thanks for sharing Mike !
Yo Cliff! Happy Friday!

Looked like it was coming in fast and great view catching the ship Mike 😁
Happy Friday Antwaun!!! The weekend is here. That ship was coming in hot through the canal. It was fun to watch.
Wow! Beautiful and moving fast! So beautiful out there! 😍
Hey Ellan! Always great hearing from you. I hope all is well.

How’s the weather for you right now?
@@vibewithmike starting of winter here by us, but weather is funny still getting a lot of rain which is strange for this time of the year! Looks like you have nice weather now!
Nice weather is considered anything but Snow, at least for me!😂😂😂😂👋👋👋👋
Yup. Rewatching your videos. ❤️
Great video! Thank you for sharing! We visited Duluth 2 years ago and hope to come back. We saw Mesabi Miner and Wicko when we were there. These ships are amazing!
What’s up JustDulci! I’m really glad that you got to visit Duluth. It’s definitely worth a trip but when there’s better weather. The winter’s can be pretty harsh. Were you here during the summer? Did you go to any good places to eat? I hope you had a fun trip. The Miner is one of my favorites. The name alone is super cool. I linked a night video of the Miner for you below. I think you’ll like it. I hope you come back from war ship videos. Wonderful chatting with you my friend! All the best! Mesabi Miner video: ruclips.net/video/V8l5y7CawoE/видео.html
@@vibewithmike We were there in August 2021. It was a beautiful weekend. It was kind of a whirlwind trip but we had a blast!
I’m glad that you had fun. I hope you come back soon. And I hope the weather is good too for you.
They must have been heading to Mc Donalds as fast as they were going!
They definitely were using the drive-through lane! Service with a smile!😂😂😂🍔🍔🍔🍔
Nice horn. The only other multi tone horn I can recall is James R. Barker.
Exactly, the Barker is the other one. Both awesome ships. Happy Friday.
I just completed my first trip to Duluth on Thursday, 5/18. I was there for 3 days last week. Fairly nice weather my first day there, but cool/cold the remainder of the time. I enjoyed the town. Got up to Two Harbors as well.
Wendell, it makes me so happy to hear people take trips to Duluth. At least you got one nice day out of three. There have been stretches of weeks of cold and miserable weather. However, I hope you had a blast. When you went to Two Harbors, did you go up the scenic drive or the highway? I hope you did the scenic. What other things did you do during the trip? Any good places you stopped to eat? All the best my friend. I hope you had a great weekend.⛴️👍
55 more days until I get to visit the Twin Ports. Super excited!
Chuck, watch how fast that number gets to 15.
Hi Mike, great video! I’m coming to Duluth on the Octantis in two weeks. I can’t wait to sail under the bridge!
Awesome! Anita you are going to have a blast. I hope the weather is perfect for you.
I wasn't aware of a speed limit but then again I may not have done my homework about either.
Good stuff Mike👍
Same. Though I assumed there was *something* in place for the canal
No speed limit! 😂😂 i’m just having a little fun!
Wouldn’t that be funny to see someone out there with a radar gun?
@@vibewithmike 🤣..sorry...I didn't mean to Debbie Downer but there for a minute I was maybe there is a speed limit 😆
@@vibewithmike let's see. Camera, sound meter, and radar gun. You'd then even exceed the term boatnerd!
Interestingly enough, there is apparently a speed limit in the canal and harbor (who knew?)
"Harbor regulations. -A speed limit of 8 mph (7 knots) is enforced in Duluth-Superior Harbor."
She sure was motoring 🚤
I didn’t even know. Chuck is the on that figured it out.

Mike!! My family is in this video! 😂 That's us standing by the wall near the end of the video. Not a great look for me as I'm leaning over the wall to take video around my son - I'm in the pink shirt with my husband and 2 sons. I can't believe you walked right past us and I didn't know you were there! We went to the lighthouse right AFTER the ship went by. I guess we should have gone there BEFORE. Talk about 'ships passing in the night' - we did it in the daytime! That was the first ship we saw when we got to town.
Jodi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I 100% remember seeing your family! Think how awesome it was to see that ship coming in as well. You have to admit it was moving quick. It was actually really cool! How awesome is that to be down on the pier at the same time? Absolutely cool!!!!!!! I hope all of you had a wonderful time! That weather was great!
That's cool and interesting.

Looks like the ship tower has mere inches to spare as it clears the bridge.
It’s amazing how these ships pass right under that bridge that goes up. The bridge was built in the early 1900s. Did you see this video from the other day? ruclips.net/video/hGlUk_bds60/видео.htmlsi=h6aUm3Bl0Bukp7QC
The folks and I used to see the Edmund Fitzgerald quite often, tied up alongside Miami St. in Toledo.

@@vibewithmike I was 9 or 10 at the time and it was no different than any of the other ore carriers except for the name, Fitzgerald caught my attention as it was the Presidents middle name. On Friday, 9 days after my 10th birthday he was in Dallas.
The Dallas situation will never be forgotten. I brought my teenagers to the book depository building museum there and we spent full day researching that area. A sad in our country‘s history. I have to get out to Ohio at some point towards the end of the season to see all of those ships in layup. I’ve seen videos and it looks so cool. Thanks for the comment my friend! Wonderful reminiscing with you!👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
That's how a ship's horn should sound like.
I agree, I love those old cruise ships sounding horns! Happy Friday night my friend
Would have been funny if the small boat that was trailing was the harbor patrol coming to issue an excess speed citation.
Buj, now that would’ve made for an interesting video!
Such a beautiful town! Don't leave your phone like that Mike. People will snatch it! 😕Man that ship is moving! Thanks for sharing Mike and have a great day!
Yeah, Mike. Not all those peeps out there are Minnesotans. Could be out of town thieves lurking.
Nah..I doubt someone would take the phone...most people can track their phone and a phone thief doesn't want to get tracked down and jailed.
@@insertnamehere313 Doesn't bother people I assure you. They will sell it or strip it rather quickly.
I was watching closely. Just one other person was there. I wouldn’t of had a problem. If there was many people there I wouldn’t have done that.
I felt out the situation before I put the phone down. I was watching it. And I was talking to the guy just before.

What is the speed limit for ships entering/leaving the harbor? At the speed that the ship entered the harbor, how long would it take to come to a full stop?
One other point, have you ever thought if adding some music, for example “Barnacle Bill the Sailor” playing softly in the background?
Take a look at the very top comment for this video. I have it at the very top. There’s an actual law that shows the speed limit.

If you freeze frame at 1:43 you'll see two flags flying on the bow. The top red flag is one of my favorites. I'd love to own that flag! It's an Indian head pertaining to the operating subsidiary Grand River Navigation of Rand Logistics. The flag below says "Don't Give up the Ship".

Sweet ship beautiful day :) What's the difference in a regular salute and a master salute?
There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. It was fun watching the ship come in fast!
Any penalties for safety violations? Like speed?
I think it just grazed the bottom of the bridge!! I'd be a nervous wreck. If water was higher what would have happened?? Can't stop on a dime...😂
Nope, too big to stop fast.
The radar antenna on her bow isn't working. Wonder why? Stuff like that makes me curious. Or just plain nosy :D

I didn’t think there was speed limit, but Chuck found some information saying there was. He posted it in a comment here.
I wonder what is the draft of that ship? What is the depth of that canal?
Nick, The canal is maintained at 245 feet (75 m) wide and 28 feet (8.5 m) LWD, allowing passage of ocean-going ships.
Question, that ship just made it under that lift bridge fully loaded, what about when it comes back unloaded still clear the bridge ?.

@highlanderthegreat excellent comment, I hope you subscribe and come back to the channel many times in the future. All ocean-going ships operating on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway are required by law to hire a U.S. or Canadian pilot to assist with navigation. Hands-down the best documentaries I’ve ever watched about Duluth are these two, Lost Duluth 1 & Lost Duluth 2. If you want to learn about the ship canal start at exactly 19:33 in Lost Duluth 1. I have linked these videos below for you. These documentaries tell the whole story of Duluth’s beginning and shipping industry, it’s absolutely fascinating with the photos and videos.

Thanks for the link ☺️..oh I forget, that MV Marine Electric was sank & capsize on Feb 12,1983 taking 31 souls aboard only 3 survived.
And here I thought you were talking about ships becoming electric!😂😂😂😂 Boat Friends, here’s what our friend Valentino is talking about. Very sad story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Marine_Electric
It's not even 3 p.m. LOL 😆🤣🤪
Here like they say, it’s 3 o’clock somewhere! 😂😂😂 Not sure who says that one though?😂 happy Friday Dar!
cookie served weeks old tater salad and the boat ran outta shit tickets. and you get this.
Tater salad? That sounds good.
I don't know anything about this canal, what's the reason for the aerial lift bridge?
Dark, let me first thank you for stopping for a moment to drop a comet. The bridge was made to allow cars/people to go from one side of land to the other. It lifts to allow ships and other watercraft pass under. I did some more digging for you. An I thought living close to RR tracks was noise.
Dan, I grew up living next to an international airport!!! Talk about noise.👂👂👂✈️🛫🛬🛩️✈️
I'm guessing she was doing 16 mph
Michael, you and I need to get on some police motorcycles and set up a radar. We don’t want to ticket these captains, but it’s our job!😂😂😂👋👋👋👍
You don't need to guess, on the app he was using it showed 11.8kt or 13.6 mph. Given the load on her and the constrainted channel she probably didn't accelerate any more.
Honestly, James, I enjoyed watching it come in quick. It made it fun. I hope you’re having a great Saturday!
She is going to throw a big bow wave if she was sweet 16.
😂😂😂⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
What could go wrong? I mean it’s just a speeding tanker that weighs god-only-knows-how-much? Naw! That’s a totally safe operation.
Wonder what that was about.
Maybe they needed to make it to Sam’s Club before it closed?😂😂😂😂👋👍
I couldn't see any life boats on board where would they be stored
Captain must have had a hot date he was late for 😂
John, whoever had the date, they made it in time. Possibly a little early…😂😂😂😂😂👊👊👊👊⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
@@vibewithmike may have 🤣
It was kind of cool seeing the ship coming quick
@@vibewithmike yeah, I don't think I ever saw one going that fast other than the Coast Guard cutter heading out to a sinking boat once.
At first, it looked like it was moving normal speed, but you could tell when I got even with me, that thing was flying. That’s a captain that knows that water very well. I was actually very impressed by the captain. Pretty cool.
Loaded her in Toledo Ohio full of soy beans great crew treated the longshoremen like gold will always love that boat n her crew
Jason! How darn cool is that to have loaded this ship! Wow! I envy you brother! And thanks for your hard work! I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
I knew that it had to be breaking the speed limit. It was absolutely flying and definitely more than 8 mph. You'd have to be running to keep up with her. Going that fast in a narrow channel was irresponsible.
The speed limit on UK canals is 4 mph, and on our rivers, it's 6 mph. Although on canals, it's more about protecting the canal banks from erosion.
You have to check this out. You got to see Lake superior when it was very cold in the sky in lake looked like something out of a movie. ruclips.net/video/mKzamgCa6zw/видео.htmlsi=6DCiF1Rq3OgdOxPr
@vibewithmike It certainly looked pretty with all of the colours in the sky. With those temperatures, I was expecting to see a lot more ice on the lake and in the channel.
