I'm a Brit and spent from the 1970s travelling the world constructing tunnels, one was in 94 a tunnel under the St Clair river from Sarnia Ont. to Huron Mich. Left UK just after new year and landed in a snow storm. Moved into an apartment maybe 500m back from the river. So had a birds eye view of the Lakers passing up and down. Saw the first one through after the spring thaw, the skipper wearing a top hat and a tree lashed to the mast. In the summer spent days off sailing on Lake Huron. I'd seen Lakers moored in the port with bubbler keep the stern gear free from ice. A great 18 month contract, after that I worked in warmer climbs enjoyed them so much I've retired to Vietnam.
THANK you so much for this inspiring video!! I love how people were saying "Good morning!" It was probably below 0F but here all all these folks watching and waving. Cool. Very cool.
First trip to sea late 70s was up the Great Lakes on the MV Federal Clyde. I was only 16 and a galley boy. Now I’m nearly 60 and chief 👨🍳in the Merchant Navy. Sadly all the British ships and shipping companies have all gone. Miss the good old days of the cargo boats tramping around the world. Had some great runs ashore in some fantastic places. ❤️ my job & the 🌊🌊🌊 👨🍳👨🍳😉
That was wonderful. At one point because of the movement of the ice along the ship it appeared as if you were moving along, but not quite as fast as the ship. Great optical illusion.
I had the opportunity to work on her in dry dock, erie,pa in the early 90's..quite a site up on dry dock blocks, underneath her hull..unbelievable amount of steel from that perspective..!!!
Awesome video. Really felt like being there. She is the ship of my family's history of being iron ore miners. It is very nice that she was named in the honor of all those that pull the iron ore out of the ground to be shipped down to the smelters. Many thanks to the captain and crew for taking such good care of her. See you next season.

That’s a passage up in northern Lake Michigan that most boats going to Lake Huron from south have to take. When you share it with one of those big boys it sure makes the passage seem smaller than it is.
Great vid. I worked in the Fincanteiri ship yard a couple of times for someone who employed me to set up some deep well pumps for the OEM.
