  • In this look back at Tekken 2 we see how Namco's approach to the Tekken story was anything but ordinary. In the make-or-break sequel the script is flipped and our Hero of Tekken 1, Kazuya Mishima, is now the unexpected villain and head of the Mishima Zaibatsu, while his freshly defeated father becomes the main playable character rather than an end-boss. Along with the Mishima Feud getting into full swing movesets are doubled, sub-bosses get personalities and a host of game modes are introduced ensuring the couch-co-op days of fighting games had plenty of challenge, reward, and replay value. Far from being a forgettable sequel that pre-empted Tekken 3, Tekken 2 was perhaps the single-most important instalment narratively speaking for the Tekken series; since Devil Kazuya, Jun Kazama and the Angel are all introduced here.
by having a vengeful anti-hero Kazuya Mishima in the leading role; and the roster of bizarre, but ultimately grounded fighters from Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams and Michelle Chang, to sub-bosses like Wang Jinrei and Lee Chaolan. We also consider how movements within the gaming industry, such as Namco obtaining Virtua Fighter designers including the seminal director Seiichi Ishii, allowed Tekken to make the most of innovative 3D game design.

I often see people being dismissive of the story in Tekken 1 and 2, but I think they’ve got much more going in them than people realize.

  • @parrisxsummers

Jun being devils sub boss should’ve been a massive hint

  • @MadderCommotion

Im so happy to see someone talking about tekken games in the way i see them too!

  • @goranisacson2502

The tech-jump in the past was indeed great and required more people than had previously worked on the games... but if we look at Street Fighter II the credits list have 29 people in it, with 4 programmers, possibly 5.
