Agree with all posters above. I had a feeling that LD, during his last years, was only playing for the audience. Going through the motions, waiting for LCW games, because that is what the badminton fans wanted to see most. Often in his games he had some action that started some crazy fun rally and he noticed the specialty of a good rally instantly and tried to make it as epic as possible. Vs LCW this was often possible because of their skill and their special chemistry, so LD was always super motivated and cranked up his effort and presented his A game, so that the audience can enjoy good badminton.

My honest opinion after 2017 LD slowed down and re vamped his game more into control and defence so he wasn't agressive any more and many started beating him after 2017. But LCW till retirement kept his same form and consistently beaten all of them. But he had this psychology barrier against LD due to years of IDs dominance over him and couldn't over come it. Because in 2018 LCW was clearly the better player.

To win against Lin Dan, LCW needed to play fast and quickly creating attacking gameplay to take lead and then reserve energy in between but hitting high quality shots. You see Lin Dan was a player who is very tricky and has high quality shots to get out of any defence gameplay and convert it to attack.And once he knows opponents weakness he always tries to exploit it.LCW really couldn't figure out Lin Dan's weakness. LCW is a reactive player depending too much on his reaction and quick feet abilities. LCW should have attacked if any lifts were given. It's very difficult to disbalance LDan so he should have attack every time he gets a chance. The only demerit I show in all matches was LCW had lower quality shots compared to Lin Dan both attacking and defence shots. LCW was fast and agile and durable enough to outmatch Lin Dan in speed, so he should have played fast paced game for taking lead and then slow pace but high quality shots if he takes the lead. LCW gives too many chances for his opponents to attack and then tries to defend them and wear them out. This was clearly not working against Lin Dan. Only way to beat Lin Dan is Attack !!! Attack !!!(with full power) to get lead somehow and then Defend !!! Defend !!! (while reserving energy at the same time).
LCW is one of the Greatest player in the badminton History. But he looks tensed always when the opponent is LD! LD is the only player who was really a Great Wall from China against all Players in his era. I think Victor Axelson can only be a real opponent to LD but he came little late. And it kind of amazes me how lindan doesn't looses his calm and always figures his way out while playing against LCW. Because sometimes u can clearly see lcw doesn't show any weak points but lindan always gets him. Like in this match u can see how he targeted lcw's backhand.

LCW was the better player, his style just complimented Lin Dans playstyle making him beat LCW specifically, otherwise just the results of these all england (2017, 2018) show that. Both players face Shi Yu Qi, LCW beats him easy in straight games and LD loses in straight games

LCW is a rally player. He’s very defensive when playing against LD and relies more on his opponent’s mistakes
