    China's Lin Dan wins the gold medal in the men's badminton singles final against Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei.
    The sport debuted at the Olympics in 1972 with this Summer's final taking place in front of a capacity crowd at Wembley Arena.
    It was not until the 1992 Games in Barcelona that badminton was officially included on the Olympic programme, with men's and women's singles and doubles events. The mixed doubles event made its debut in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Since then, the number of events has remained unchanged.

Even Chong Wei didn't win, this match brought Malaysians of all ages and races to sit and watch together at restaurants, 'mamaks' and other places where the tv was tuned to this match. People who say other players are better than Lindan just simply don’t watch badminton. Speaking from a purely technical point of view, I’d agree that LCW or Gade or whomever is the same as Lindan. But badminton is not all about the technical skills. Lindan’s mentally is what makes him the greatest of all time.

    I feel sad for Lee Chong Wei. The first time in the 2008 Olympic final, he may have been too nervous or the gap between him and Lin Dan was too big, so he was easily defeated. Four years later, they met again in the final, and both were in peak condition, giving us a historic peak duel. Another four years later, although he defeated Lin Dan in the semifinals, he seemed too exhausted in the final and lost to the peak Chen Long. We can only sigh that he was born in the wrong era. But if he hadn't been born in Lin Dan's era, he might have been a champion or maybe an unknown badminton player. Who knows?

      +Quang Pham That would be totally awesome. I think the draw would have to play out that LD plays Viktor Axelson in the semi and LCW plays Chen Long in the semi. If it's reversed I'm not sure LD can take Chen Long.

      Jimmy jim Its 1-2 not 1-3. And Viktor doesnt have any experience in the Olympics so we dont know how we he will do just like LD in olympics 2004 or Chen Long in WC 2011. But LD still have to be in good form or he wont even get to the semi-final.

    • @skywalkercfc5386
      @skywalkercfc5386 8 лет назад +2

      Gin356a what the hell man.. LCW won 2 silver olympic medal, won gold medal in Commenwealth games, won Asian championship and LCW is the only player in badminton history who won all the super series titles. LCW won the most titles in badminton history a total 65 titles in his career and reached 45 finals. LCW could have won 110 titles if he won all the finals he reaches.

    • @GIN.356.A
      @GIN.356.A 8 лет назад +39

      Skywalker CFC Table scraps...nobody gives a shit about commonwealth games because the level of competition is low, superseries is just for the prize money. The only "Majors" in badminton is OG, WC, Asian Games, Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup. Lee Chong Wei AKA the Uncrowned King has won none of the above, Lin Dan on the other hand has won every single one at least twice. Taufik has won an Olympic Gold and was a world champion, and Asian games gold, led his team to Thomas Cup gold...Again, Lee Chong Wei is a great player, and maintains a high level of play for almost a decade, but his best have never been as good as The other two. Lin Dan is without a doubt the greatest ever by far, but Taufik can compete at 100 when it matters and win big titles while being only at 80 or less the oher times, while Lee chong wei is always at 95, extremely consistent, but just doesnt have the Plus alpha to go the extra mile, therefore zero major title, an Uncrowned King if you will.

      Bright Ma I'm not comparing skills, i'm comparing world titles. Zhang Jike is almost a double Grand Slam winner... never a table tennis player has won this much

    • @TheNo1Grapefruit
      @TheNo1Grapefruit 9 лет назад +1

      KiraWasHere -flickr There's so many events for badminton players lol... For TT only 3 is needed for a "grand slam", plus the Pro Tour Grand Finals (incidentally Kong Linghui is the only one with all 4). No one even cares about the Pro Tours.
      For TT, there are female atheletes with 2 grand slams (ZYN), and anyways, ZJK still have a long career ahead of him. Who knows, maybe he'll become the GOAT or retired like Liu Guozheng. Right now though, ZJK doesn't have the most titles objectively.
      However ZJK is strong, he is not as dominant as Lin Dan. ZJK won 5/8 grand slam tournaments since the 2011 WTTC win, which can't be compared to Lin Dan.

    Rewatching this after 9 years. This match brought me to the blackhole of badminton world. One of the best match in badminton history. Seeing Lee Chong Wei broke down after the last point was just heartbreaking. And yet I can't oversee of how godly Lindan actually was.
    So battles between the righties and lefties. If Ronaldo has Messi, and Federer has Nadal, Lee Chong Wei has Lin Dan. Because God knows they'd be undefeated if they don't coexist in an era. And one cannot be too powerful xD

    When the game was on the edge, mental difference between two great players decided the game. Lee was thinking too much when he took 19:18 lead. Apparently, he wished he could get another point from Lin Dan's error. 1:22:07. How could he have made such a misjudgement of out-of-bound? Look at how Lin Dan played (1:22:42) after he tied the game at 19:19. It shows his determination to finish the game. There is a reason why Lin vs. Lee's record is 28-12.
