    Never made potatoe pancakes with mashed potatoes. Always used raw shredded potatoes and grated raw onion, couple eggs, pancake mix vanilla. Mix, fry up in oil, serve with apple sause. Whenever I had a crew up in the mountains, I'd make up a few dozen. They're just fine dinning. Extremely popular back in NY and NJ. I'll try the mashed kind but have to remember to make extra.

    My mum’s Ukrainian and she used to make these with grated raw potatoes. Mixed with egg, flour and whatever else you want to put in. She then added flour to thicken the mixture and cook them. Because the pancakes were grated veg, they cooked in a shallow frier very quickly and crispy. I make these now for my kids and grandchildren. Still a family favourite. 👍🇦🇺

    My family makes a simpler version of this with just left over mashed taters, onions, egg, and flour. They're tasty. We always called them tater cakes. I've also had left over soup beans fixed like this, too. Likewise, they're called bean cakes. Good stuff. And it's my unexpert opinion that everything is better fried in bacon grease.

  • @rcsutter
    @rcsutter 5 лет назад +1

    I see a lot of comments from people who enjoyed tater pancakes years ago, as I did, but kind of forgot about them and how good they are. That's something you do really well, revive recipes that have been forgotten over time, and take them to a new level. I made these tonight and they were excellent! Adding eggs and baking powder makes them crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. But I cheated a little. I used Bob Evans already-made mashed potatoes. They turned out great!

    Wonderful Kent, really great. I made these (about 100yrs ago as a new minted spouse) when we crossed the Mississippi River for California, I was told that none of my high fal•lute•in' East coast ways would suffice to make potato pancakes like my grandmother used to make and what was a "latka" anyway? What language was that word from? However I found that my new in-laws had never put crumbled bacon into the batter, that too was foreign, and not invented in Cali•for•knee•i•ay! (Ummmm, yeah, well times change & it was 1980 after all, not 1880) that said you've done it again and I'm thankful for it, bless you n your taste testers! Keep those recipes coming! I'm always made glad by your vids

    I'm making these right now. I guess I should've started WAAYY earlier so I could have these for breakfast, but they'll be tasty treat for a late lunch!! Since my birthday is a few days before Christmas, this video reminded me I needed cooking tools for my new cast iron pan - so I'm taking this rest time (while the potato mixtures chills for 10 minutes) to order my birthday gift: that mesquite scraper!! PS I rely on your cooking vids: the scenery (Texas alum) and - so far - the pizza (the impetus to get that cast iron pan), chicken and dumplings, biscuits and gravy. . .

    Hi Kent, just got your Original Red River Ranch rub and I love it. I like to experiment with different rubs and seasoning as I've been BBQ'n for a long time and new flavors are always welcome. I really like the hint of citrus in the mix, my wife picked up on it right away. It will be added to my large collection of seasoning and rub inventory. Got your Mesquite wood scraper too. What a quality piece. Thank You guys for all your videos.

      I like the citrus too. It has a similar effect as MSG, without the negative aspects of MSG. I bought a shaker for Christmas presents for everyone in my family, they all love it. I got the mesquite too, it's truly a meat rub, excellent on anything you'd put a rub on. But I use his Original on just about everything, you can make a really good chip dip with just sour cream and the seasoning. Mix it up to taste and let it set in the fridge for a few hours so the flavors mingle.

      Thanks Rich, I like the chip dip idea, I'll give it a try...

      Like I say, it's good on everything. You see Kent use it all the time in his recipes, the man knows good food. A pinch in beef stew, gravies, breading mix, burgers, ribs, steak, poultry, wild game, you name it and it's a good seasoning for it.

    I'm an assimilated German. They aren't typically made with mashed potatoes. The traditional German recipe calls for a medium shred, at least that's the way we made them at the Lancester (PA) Leiderkranz. Or you can do half mashed and half shredded. I do like the bacon addition! I love the spoon hang time trick. That is genius.
