  • David Pearson and Richard Petty ... it was the kind of rivalry that made NASCAR.
There was no hatred between the two ... certainly not like Carolina and Duke, the Red Sox and Yankees and Michigan and Ohio State.
In this special clip with the late, great David Pearson, he remembers his two most famous finishes with Richard.

If you didn't get to see these two race, you missed what real racing is all about. Never been anything close to it since then.

      You are right.
Real men racing in real multi brand stock cars. Not the IROC racing we have today.

I grew up in Cocoa Beach, Fl. in the 60's/70's (about 60 miles south of Daytona and just south of Cape Canaveral), my Dad was a Rocket Engineer at the Cape and an old Ford guy. i never saw a Daytona 500 but he took us to see several Firecracker 400's and the night before Paul Revere 250 road race. We were at this 400 where David Pearson snookered the King...I was hootin and a hollerin when the Ford won!

They didn't call him the "Silver Fox" for nothing.....used his head and his throttle. And you know Richard was PISSED about that one. 🏁

Great interview. My favorite Nascar driver back then. Loved the Wood Bros. and Bud Moore too. Watched all these races on TV and got to see David win in person at Ontario, Ca. in 1976. Those small block Clevelands were absolute runners forcing Petty and others to run big engines to even have a chance.
    Thank you

Pearson was a heavy smoker with a cigarette lighter installed in his car. Buddy Baker was racing him for the lead in a big race when David calmly reached over and lit up a cigarette. Baker said, "When I saw him light up that cigarette I knew he had me beat right there!"

My old man was there. He said it was awesome. Long live the Silver Fox! In the 76 race Pearson had to calm and cool to keep his shit running and Petty didn’t. my dad says they are videos that you can actually see the exhaust coming out of Pearson’s car as he was pushing the gas keeping it running

      Easy Georgeyboy
Firstly I’m a David Pearson Fan
Having said that, Richard is in my opinion the 2nd greatest driver ( to of course Pearson ) of all time
As a person he’s one of the nicest most considerate human beings of ever had the pleasure to meet
The “OLD” guard ( Pearson, Petty, Cale, Bobby, etc ) are THE BEST there ever was, is or ever be in NASCAR
