I'm ready for this vid because the way people (a lot of the times other black people) make jokes about Whitney Houston's substance abuse pisses me off.
I remembered this when Remy Ma was doing "Rate the Bars" on BET's youtube channel. Joe Budden's cornball self said he was "higher than Whitney Houston," and she immediately gave it a 0, saying don't talk about Whitney.

    • @rebeccassweetmusic4632

EXACTLY! I've been increasingly fascinated with Whitney and her music/performances. I'm saying this because I am a singer myself and I've always appreciated her voice even before she died. I didn't know what was going on in her personal life until I saw Oprah's interview back in middle school. I knew bits and pieces about the abusive Bobby and Whitney relationship and the drug use, but I didn't know it was THAT bad until I watched a documentary about her and then re-watched her 09 interview with Oprah years later and... It all unfortunately makes sense why coke and Marijuana were her unhealthy coping mechanisms. She also had very complicated family dynamics too. I will admit that I willingly bought a shirt from Etsy with her face on it, but I did so because of the admiration I still have for her as a performer and a musician

I feel like Ellie from UP was one of the few cases where the dead women served a major positive influence on the story and male protagonist. The whole story was centered around Carl’s grief over her death, which motivates him to go find paradise falls and eventually learn to let go and move on with his life. Despite being dead, her presence still contributes to the story and embodies the movie’s theme of learning to deal with loss and moving on. Also they actually show us what she was like when she alive and makes us care for her.

I’ve been waiting for someone to discuss this topic, Whitney, Aaliyah, and Selena Quintanilla will always be treated differently from their other counterparts. Women who die early will NEVER be respected, these women are still treated like Sara Baartman. These women died early, they still, in death, have to deal with male artists in the industry still sexualizing or mocking them, their faces being plastered onto everything without their consent, people taking their life and making them into fan fictions, and them being used to play in these fan wars to discredit other female artists. And don’t get me started on their holograms.
Aaliyah and Selena are a whole different topic since they died very young, they’re not regarded to also be child stars despite their careers starting when they were literal kids, they’re more likely to be sexualized than mocked, with the need for people to try to humble them and so the multiple accusations of them being fast also suddenly appear. The way people treat Selena and Aaliyah shows a bigger issue in society that’s been going on before, during, and after their lives and shows how people treat young women like them.

I’ve seen fanart and fanfics that added way more to her character than the small crumbs gege left.

    (Spoilers warning for JJK)
On the subject of JJK, the deaths are more annoying than they are heartbreaking because it feels like they are done out of shock value. With the exception of Nanami, when characters die, it feels like it's done out of spite and not to make any meaningful impact. I feel like Nobara's death embodied that the best. It was so out of nowhere and had no reason to happen that there are still people who believe she's alive. Her death was completely pointless and unnecessary. At that point, why should we care about characters or the story if you're just going to kill them off without elaborating? And it is frustrating that nearly the entire female cast gets the worst of this treatment

Yet they didn't, and even had a beautiful ending for them (despite the anime not being afraid to kill quite a few girls off)

You could do another video on whθrephobia alone. Especially intersecting with misogynoir and transmisogynoir. Multiple cereal k€llers have targeted Black textworkers specifically or women suffering from addiction. Also not to be critical of Bobby Brown, but I feel like he gets the most grace out of his family despite Whitney and Bobbi Kristina both passing for similar reasons. Hardly anyone cares about their daughter. I get annoyed when people see a death as a tragedy for a man but not the victim. Like their suffering is secondary. It's one of my nitpicks about the Apothecary Diaries anime when it comes to MaoMao's mother. It feels like she is a background object for her daughter and the general.

Growing up the people who listened to Aaliyah loved her as an artist and when she died it was an emotional loss (especially in Chicago). We didn't grow up with Marilyn Monroe so she felt more like a product (which is something she would have absolutely hated). I think when it comes to R. Kelly, a lot of people throw women like Aaliyah under the bus to defend him and his so-called legacy and reputation. And they attack all of his victims. I didn't know Aaliyah but I always feel bad for how she was harmed and not protected as a child. And she wasn't the only one. There are so many predators in music and film (e.g. P Diddy, Mary J, Nickelodeon, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Prince, etc.).

HarriYAWNna amirite? Looks like Toji's wife needs get some sleep or sum. I love Whitney so much! She got treated terribly and I feel still gets joked about because of how black communities often joke on something aggressively when they're uncomfortable with how it relates to them. I rarely get shirts with people on them, but when I went to the store and saw the one I ended up buying, my brain went "Whitney! That's going in the cart".
And it's inch resting how Marilyn gets a completely different presentation in media, often with an "I could've fixed her" lens. They both had very similar issues. If there's an afterlife, I'd love to hang out with them for dinner because the three of us would be so funny. But in my time here on this rock, may no one slander the name of Eartha Kitt. Amen 🙏

but anyway i just don't know how the hell gege managed to get crowned as the pinnacle of female character writing. they ate with maybe that one scene and then fucked up the rest of the kitchen, it just unsettles me deeply. but your cosplay ate downnnnnnn
