  • Zola goes to Church, "Only You" Zola Taylor's Platters group featuring Elmer Hopper on lead. Elmer Hopper never became a member of Zola's group this was a one time fill in performance. Hopper was sued by Martha Robi widow of Paul Robi (original baritone) for unfair competition and more charges, all for helping Zola in this troubled time. Although Hopper was sued he still never regretted helping Ms. Taylor because on the on going friendship Zola & Paul had throughout the years after parting ways for both members Platters days

After Tony Williams left the Platters there were 2 lead singers that had Tony's range and vocal ability. They were Sonny Turner and Elmer Hopper. I saw them both perform and the shows were done with poise and grace.

@bobbilse Thank you, what a nice comment and compliment. Hearing my name in any phrase with Tony Williams is the ultimate compliment. Tony was the hit machine for the Platters. I followed his career, listened to everything I could be him over the years and I'm convince that without Tony there would be no Platters as we all knew them. Adrian was a really nice guy, actually it was because I knew him that I chose to risk being sued to help him and Zola with that one show. Thank you

@bobbilse Sorry I ran out of characters, But I wanted to say that it truly was a pleasure doing that show with Zola and for Adrian. I did cost me a serious fear concerning being sued. But it taught me a very valuable lesson in life about being a person that wants to help someone because you care. There's a horrible bunch of people out there in the music that would lie to God about being a real Platter. see my book soon!

No one comes close to Tony Williams. They call Elmer "legendary" but he never sang on any of their hits. In this version, his range is not what Tony sang. Tony sings a B flat at the end, Elmer sings a G....a whole step and a half lower than the original key. I believe in Platters tribute groups, but they should not bill themselves as the Platters...that belongs to the original 5: Zola, David, Paul, Herb and Tony..

+bonnie bennini I agree with most of what you said. You're absolutely correct about Tony singing a Bb I never EVER would compare myself to the Late Tony Williams (as he was my friend, and Idol) I hated singing this great tune in Zola's groups key. She only asked me to fill in for her usual lead singer. I only did this as a favor. I think she was only using what we call Patter on stage (I don't know about the legendary stuff) Anyway! I know you can't please everyone sorry I hope you're not too offended? It was Zola Taylor's group Zola's rules!

I appreciate your reply, and I respect your position. My comments were not a personal attack, but factual statements about the song, without knowing the "behind the scene" requirements. I am not offended in any way, and I hope I did not offend you, personally. I was speaking as a long time fan who adored the original Platters and especially the other-worldly voice of Tony Williams. I applaud your courage for singing these songs, and opening yourself to comparison.

+bonnie bennini All good Bonnie, I thought I was the biggest fan of Tony's :) I met him around 1987. I went along with Paul Robi to do a show in New York, Paul called Tony and we went to his Penthouse and visited for about 6 hours. I was so happy to meet Tony and his wife. Anyway I want to say this about that performance with Zola. I had resigned from Paul's group and had way too much of Platters management type people. But the day Zola called me and asked me to help her out because being in a bind concerning her lead sing I knew I'd catch some flack with my former Platters people but I said screw it I'm gonna help Zola as a friend.

When I walked into Zola's house and listened to her group compared to Paul Robi's group it was night and day, but I just had to help. Her musical director frowned when I told him that the key was WAY TOO LOW! I played the piano at this one practice in A minor which is the Key Tony sang My Prayer live. And Zola seemed to enjoy it! but a few days later at the gig, her piano player/musical director looked at me as if? maybe I was trying to change something? Anyway it all turned out to be a nightmare. R.I.P. Zola, Paul & Tony. I loved those folks so much. Please read my book, it should be available by Summer this 2016.

Zola's regular lead vocalist, Adrian Pepo, didn't have your range. It's unusual to hear you singing these songs in lowered keys (obviously the keys her group had them rehearsed in), since you have the same vocal range as Tony Williams did. I saw Zola's group in San Jose California, once, and was disappointed in the lead singer. He couldn't touch your pipes!
