An easy way to change woodworking lathe chuck jaws - A Magnetic Solution to a Big Problem

- Changing lathe chuck jaws can be a problem. I came up with an easy magnetic solution for keeping chuck jaws and screws out of the shavings under the lathe. This method should work for all wood lathe chucks but the bowl size may be different. These magnetic bowls are available from many different sources. They were designed to hold parts when something is being assembles or dis-assembled.
Some may question the use of a magnetic bowl as shown in this video. I've seen no problems with the jaws and screws becoming magnetized. If I was turning steel instead of wood this would obviously be a problem. Your experience may differ.
This video is part of a project where I made a birdcage awl. There will be several videos on this project. I'll link to them below as they are published on RUclips.

Great idea! Those magnetic bowls are very handy, I use them all the time!
And good to see you back. It's been a while!
Hello Thomas. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate your support.
Yes, it’s been a while since I posted over here. We’ve been dealing with some possibly serious health issues that have finally resolved themselves . Pam and I are fine and back to normal, whatever that is at our ages. 😉 I’ve also been working on an Apple technology channel on RUclips.
My plans include getting out in the shop more this winter and get some of my projects finished. I’m hoping that I can carry out those planes.
@@wb_finewoodworking I'm glad to hear you've resolved the health issues! I'll be looking forward to new videos :^)
Welcome back! I hope that means that all is well!!! I look forward to more of your videos!
X Factor, thank you. I appreciate your support. Currently I am working on several videos and plan to start recording some more next week.
Considering both of us had health issues that could have turned out much worse than they did we’re both feeling great, at least great for our ages.
Good idea, but this is the exact reason I switched over to the Easy Chuck. It is nice to not worry about screws or jaw alignment
John, thanks for the comment. That is a great solution to the problem.
Sometime in the future I’d like to get Easy Chuck or possibly a chuck for each type of jaws. Since I’m not just a turner such an expenditure is not a choice for me right now. I decided that make the video for people like me who can’t afford fancier or multiple chucks.
@@wb_finewoodworking I get it. Turning is not a cheap hobby. Thanks for sharing the idea. I still have a Nova G3 chuck too :)
@@WoodturningWithJohnMarro thanks again. Have fun turning.
A t handled allen wrench is a great help in changing jaws.
Garth, thanks for the tip. As I was editing this video I thought the same thing. Hopefully some others will read your comment and it will help them. Now, I need to buy one to store at the lathe.
Awesome, I have the same chuck.
Thanks for the reply. I hope this works out for you.
You can actually change the chuck jaws? I just kept buying scroll chucks with different jaws already attached.
Robert, Thank you for the suggestion. I’m aware that some people have dedicated chucks with specific jaw sets attached. I, like many others, do not have the funds to afford multiple chucks. Since my woodworking in not just centered on turning and I need equipment to run a RUclips channel, my limited funds have to be stretched to areas beyond those of a dedicated turner. Part of the goal of my RUclips channel is to help people like me.
@@wb_finewoodworking , but I thought all woodworkers on RUclips were rich. I'm just pulling your chain. Enjoy the holidays.
@@robertcornelius3514 Right! So far I’ve made about $130 from those YouTubs ads that viewers have to suffer through. I appreciate your support. Enjoy your holidays as well.
Buy another chuck and stop wasting your time.
Yes, that’s a good solution but I don’t have the funds to buy another chuck at this point. Fortunately I don’t change jaws very often.
