I agree. I feel like with modern game collectors there's less of an incentive to like what you're collecting. I've seen many collectors on youtube brag about how expensive or rare a game is that they found, instead of gush over how much they like it. I only collect my favorite games, games with nostalgic memories attached to them, and games I want to replay in the future. I don't feel the need to collect games just to have them sit on a shelf. It will take a fundamental shift on the modern philosophy of collecting for this hording trend to change. It would take a lot of emphasizing collections that truly matter. Game collections consisting of what's important as opposed to what's impressive.
Great points. I have been collecting since I was a kid due to my Dad. I really only collecting the things I love and that's not just video games. I would say my love for toys and movies mean the most to me. All of it is an expensive hobby and can take up way to much space in your home. You never want to have that hobby consume your life or spend money you don't have. You could end up with no power or homeless. No collection is worth that. Find a happy balance. Great video.
To stack what you pointed: there are collections done organically (you have console "A" and amass some games) and mounted from internet (you click around internet a fill a shelve). Many collectors after some time see the stuff they store and just send away, SPECIALLY games they bought to fill a shelve.
Very well said. Ill admit I have struggled with this in the past. Felling FOMO " Fear of missing out". Especially with limited print runs like you mentioned. Thanks for the reminder. Its good to hear this once in awhile
I was collecting years ago but sold it lol as I was never gong to play them again as I’m busy working or being married now. Same goes for my massive collection of Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Martial Arts dvds that totalled nearly 600. I practically sold them all to make space even though the wife said keep them but I knew I’d never get round to watching most of them again. Then having a large blu ray collection which again I sold. Now I own a bookcase with about 160 4K movies of which I repeat watch and about 150 blu ray of classics also. If I want to watch a film I haven’t seen in many years and I see it on iTunes for around £3-5 I will buy it digitally now instead of paying full price. It’s just crazy to own tons of stuff you won’t bother with ever again just for you to look at and not play or watch. I found that out the hard way of spending thousands of pounds over the years.
came across this as I searched "how to start a gaming collection" and this was well said I'm only interested in collecting items that I personally find cool and that I think would fit in my gaming room. I do however miss getting items with games or even finding physical art books. I'm not particularly interested in selling the items either.
My collection is complete. I set out to collect the games from my childhood, and ones that I played and will continue to play. That’s it. I like things simple 😊
Great points... I agree with your comments, I have been guilty of buying so much over the years just to add it all to 'the collection' and never really played 70%of it. As things became more rare, sought after and expensive I realised I couldn't collect everything and so started to fine tune the collection and it became much more focused...down from approx 4500 titles to just 2000 titles spread across different systems. I'm all for collecting what you want and how you want but, my advice, like yours would be to try to focus on what matters to you...and get the most out of what you buy...whether it be playing the games, looking at them or the enjoyment of playing room-tetris. Nice one 😉👍
I agree, social media is definitely having a negative influence on the way people collect! It should be less about how much you have or spend and more about how much enjoyment you actually get out of what you’re collecting!
Awesome video! I really share your perspective. It seems like all the hype in social media is really inflating the retro gaming market. For me, collecting games and consoles is all about personal significance. I focus on items that I actually played during my childhood. I’m not too concerned with the rarity or value of a piece from the 80s or 90s if it wasn’t part of my childwood. Also, it feels like some influencers jump on the "retro gaming collector" bandwagon mainly for likes and popularity. Many of them might not have grown up with these games, missing out on the true nostalgia that comes from revisiting your cherished games and consoles.
i totally agree with this stance. luckily I havent wasted toooooo much money on "valuable" games that idgaf about (cough $70 for shadow the hedgehog on gamecube cough) but I only buy games with the intent to play them. it makes me so sad the amount of people that go for those filler complete collections to just sit there on a shelf or to spend a small fortune on a really sought after game to make their collection seem impressive.
I am the same way, I always had to ask myself why I want this game or that console. Also saves my love for video games and avoids it becoming a job or burden.
@@Shnickerman I absolutely understand the only saving grace for me was that I moved to a place with more space and that I haven't really expanded my collection.
I think we should own less stuff, not more. I LOVE video games, love them… but the sight of seeing an entire basement full of video games kind of makes me groan. I think it’s the dorky, poor mans version of owning a 100 sports cars.
YES! I've watched videos where videogame influencers have gone to purchase stuff and they say ''I would buy it but it's not complete(Manual Missing)'' - Then you aren't doing it for the game, if you really wanted a game to Have/Play, a missing Booklet wouldn't matter, aslong as the disc is really good.
Been collecting since i was 7 years old (im now 48). I was a collector before i even knew it. I never sold any of my xmas/birthday presents. A very few people have ever seen my so called games room, and i dont talk about it to neighbours or talk about it to freinds when im out and about. Its a private collection, itd my personal collection of nostalgia and joy for freinds and family only. Not evn freinds of freinds will be invited to my home.
I recently started watching people like Phoenix Resale and others in this space. While it's fun to watch them buy and sell these strange or "rare" video games it also feels odd to me to want to personally collect hundreds of games. When will I ever play them all? For any given system I've ever owned during their "lifecycle" I've only ever played a handful of games that I really cherished and remember fondly. I don't see the point in owning a game because it's rare, but also have no interest or fun in playing it. On the positive side it has reignited my passion for gaming. I've been a serious gamer since the NES days and with life and everything else this passion of mine has taken a back seat. I recently bought an Analouge Super NT and am currently building out my game library. At most I will probably have 30-ish games, and that's even a stretch of what I really want/need. A few of them are games I never got to play, but most are games that I absolutely loved as a child. I'd rather own games I want to play than games I want to collect.

I just discovered your RUclips channel, and I must say, it's really impressive! I have subscribed and hit the notification bell, five-stars. Keep up the great work!
I 100% agree I only collect games that catches my interest I go for the under rated gems I either played before or seen before at a friends house but never own it. I do keep records on how many games I have for each console and that helps me to keep the collection a little as possible
You’re totally right. Retro gaming has become something else, besides what it originally stood for. That’s why I’ve been into collecting Japanese games because the culture feels like the time before retro gaming blew up.
There is a huge amount of influence for the weak minded. It's rather sickening at times especially when they are putting a false value to something. When I hear them say "it's rare", a little fart pops out. I'd say luckily most of the more expensive games are garbage anyways since all they mostly focus on is price. Oh and the countless game rooms tours you can find. How to spruce up your parents basement with games and nick-nacks. Not one of them will ever say "the best way to collect is have a decent job and live within your means." It's how to go to goodwill hunting for used games and trade your stuff in for more expensive stuff. Only then, will you be accepted by this so called community.
I collect only games that I like and will play again in the future. Thanks to this collecting doesn't feel like a chore. For example I have only one game for sega saturn, one for nintendo 64 or 3 for gamecube and more for other consoles. I checked all games for every platform on youtube, but I didn't like any more. I started collecting in 2015 and finished in 2023 with 200 games.
There is definitely an influencer angle to it, and when money is involved, incentives to push more things. Not just rare games, but accessories like modern upscaling solutions. The way some of the bigger youtubers push certain things, I'd swear there are kickbacks involved. It's become kind of like a club, and a phallic measuring match now. Too much talk about collecting, too many gameroom tours, too many products being pushed, and very little talk about the actual games themselves anymore. Every big channel is in a rush to be the first to cover the newest thing, and you are missing out if you don't have what they have. They are selling more of a brand they can then used to sell products to their consumers. I've un subscribed to a lot of big retro gaming channels lately. It's all the same stuff. I've been finding smaller channels that just talk about the games. I appreciate a well made video game review more then some dude showing me his game room. Who cares about that anymore? Game room tours were tired 10 years ago, let's move on shall we.
Great video. I see prices for Saturn games going for stupid ridiculous prices. I was going to collection Saturn again because I sold all my Saturn games back in the late 90s. But to collect it today makes no sense. I recently inherited a lot of old games from a friend who passed away, and his widow gave me a lot of PS1 and N64 games among other stuff. I even got my 3DO back since I gave it to him decades ago. I was going to start collecting again but the industry is seeing a bubble, and I cant afford to collect "retro games" today. Except for a few games here and there that are sentimental to me I dont see me taking part in what I see a lot of you guys collecting due to cost. Shame I really wanted to get my Saturn collection bigger.
When a "Switch collection showcase" video pops up on my feed and they're showing off an entire sealed collection, wearing gloves pulling out games they either know nothing about or can't pronounce and have variant cover editions of Hotel Transylvania 2 🙃
I agree with you. I only buy for me, nothing more. I do not need a complete set of anything of any systems. My current system(s) I usually buy games I can hold in my hands. If not I have a few back up that I can put the download off the systems.
Hey! I agree with you, I believe it's important to collect what you like or what is nostalgic to your life. That's how I become a collector, collecting games I played as a child. I don't see a reason to collecting games you don't like other than if you after profiting on games you know will rise but again that depends on the person. I prefer collecting games I love and if it happens to be rare, great! If not, then I still love it and value it. 😊
RUclips has definitely influenced big collecting. I've never heard of massive collections until I started watching RUclips. When I was a kid, if you had 100 games, I would have said "you must be rich".
That's a smart approach, and one I've always aspired to... the problem is, my interests always become too vast and all encompassing. I can't help being charmed by a lot of different things. I'm really trying though, to streamline the wish-list and make some sacrifices. I mostly don't even go after rare, but prices are still rough these days across the board. I've been doing this since 2008, when virtually anything could be had for lunch money, and now I'm paying $50 - $100 each for games which aren't even technically rare. Nothing comes cheap, it's super stressful, and I'm the one that hypes myself up most the time. It just feels like if I'm an adult I should be able to buy all of the "toys" I could want, but evidently it's not in the cards anymore to keep doing that.
As a kid I grew up on only Nintendo games & I missed out on playstation & xbox consoles. My family didnt own a pc until i was 16 and at the point i got hooked on WoW for a decade along with other blizzard games. Now I have a switch, Xbox 1x, & pc and i would like to get into playing older games i missed out on as a kid, but dont know where to start + i dont have the money to pay "market prices".
What kind of systems are you interested in playing the most? There are fun emulator consoles like the Sega Genesis classic or PSone or Super Nintendo that have tons of fun games for a decent price
I love collecting games. To me, at least its more about the history going back to an age of gaming that I was not there for. I didn't grow up with a SNES, a genesis, an N64 or a Dreamcast. Like I beat Sonic 1 recently and that game was hard as hell, the way games are designed back then and now are so different. And Banjo Kazooie, I was like holy shit this is really good for a game that's over a decade old. Reading the little ads and inserts for stuff like Nintendo Power or is about as much fun as playing the game itself. Strategy guides for me can be pretty fun too.But I know that's not what people many people collect for.
I wish I've seen this video before buying all of these games because there's a lot of games that are both because they said it was in the top 30 best game.
This is why I love my raspberry pi! Because if I want to play a game on some obscure old console I can just get the console on my pi so to speak. I played the OG Metal Gear this way. An MSX actual machine would have been a complete nightmare to get. And to get running on an NTSC setup.
Great video and I respect your opinion 👍🏼 and agree with most of your points. My gaming collection consists of carefully curated games I actual play and enjoy. I don’t prescribe to social media, FOMO or “influencers” take on game collecting as it’s more of an ego pissing contest 😂. As long as you’re happy with your games that’s all that matters. 😊
I think a lot of what made it awful is finally turning around, the scheme with heritage auctions and that grading company, the get rich quick hype is going away. Prices are starting to normalize now that the market is flooded. Look at 3ds games now, earlier this year the Mario Luigi games were going for at minimum $40 and just this morning today I've seen 5 on marketplace locally for 25 or less.
You’re right I cancelled the Hogwarts collectors edition, as they were charging nearly £300 for a shitty wand that hovers about half a cm of the base not only that it had a horrible white wire with plug looked horrible
Kinect was very popular. Don't let neckbeards online fool you. Genuine gaming fans liked it a lot. It sold 30 million despite the hate train trying to derail it. Kinect helped 360 a fair amount.
Not the first video I've seen on this lately. It seems that the completionists, and the High Value flipper collectors are the loudest influencers on youtube. Its not easy to find your own path, but I think its necessary to continue as a collector to find a healthy niche, so you are engaged with it rather than buying as an obligation to the hobby. I go after games about Mecha, and RTS games for consoles. Carrying on for Herzog Zwei as the best game ever.
New generation of youth ain’t gonna care. As we entering digital era all games purchases are tied to accounts and can just re-download them. And there’s emulation of all these older games. Most classics have been rebooted remastered or been released in collection compilations like crash trilogy, sonic origins, resident evil remakes
i hate myself for having expensive taste, even in the late 90s early 2000s i was buying games like saturn radiant silvergun and 4meg games like d&d, traded them all in constantly though to purchase the newer releases like an idiot> Nowadays I do try to purchase stuff im interested in but its stuff thats usually not cheap
Very good points for me I go for more nintendo and Sega collecting or any games in general that i used to play back then and for collector's editions for an example I like fire emblem so I went to invest in newest one for switch been collecting for 6 years and form my point of view is hey to each of there own but I feel enjoyment it's fun to collecting never let anyone let you different I mean God there's people that collect moives what the point of that oh well who cares end of the day where will all this stuff go on to people's shelfs no matter what
I collect for Megadrive and SNES, I have a list of games to get that I have been chipping away at but at max it's about 40 games for each system. They are games I have played, enjoyed and I am playing or will play again. Personally I look at massive collections on RUclips and think they look nice and I say fair play to whoever collects them but realistically the majority of them are just expensive decorations because there is no way there is time to play all those games, look for new ones and make videos about them, cudous to those that do it but it's not for me. I prefer having a small curated collection that I can play and enjoy. The reason I have gone after the Megadrive and SNES is because I have a lot of nostalgia for both and the games are shorter. I don't have time for huge open world games, those days are gone unfortunately.
you know what i dont like some channels sell there collection then thinking they can start fresh when games are tripling in price for me i like collecting xbox 360 ps1 ps2 ps3 ps4 ps5 xbox one ds 3fs switch psp ps vita if i can and wii u i wont collect cause i just hack my wii u
I would disagree because rpg hold the most value and those are the games that all us nerdy gamers played. Games hold their value because people like certain games . For example the real popular games are shooters and sports games they are worth dirt . Sure people see it as an investment opportunity but what’s wrong with that. Truth is for a lot of us adults that don’t have time to play games the investment opportunity actually gave us a chance to bring nostalgia into our homes and show our kids our childhood while still making “capitalist” n runs into the gaming market. I get what you are saying but I think it’s a little narrow sighted
@@Shnickerman yes absolutely! For example I resell expensive sports games so I can pay my bills but I collect old rpgs lol . I collect entire console games according to art, and style of game. Zelda, Mario’s, pokemons . Some things I resell but others I don’t mind still holding even if it goes down in value . But some I never got into so I just sell and it helps fund things
@@Shnickerman will do ! I got videos too! Let’s keep in touch and feel to reach out on discord . I also do funny videos . I’ve mostly done reselling because that’s how I started but will be doing more on game reviews, playing and how to resell to get collections for free ! Lord bless man and thanks for your kind response! I apologize if I came across critical
I think it's time for consoles to die off. Buying physical games on consoles becomes very expensive over the lifespan of a console, consoles have limited edition and collector edition prints runs which are made in limited supply. Prices are going up, and it's a low return on investment. So why bother.
Buying games has never been a good return on investment, buying new you almost always lose value. I think consoles will eventually end but I think a lot of people still like having other devices (not PC) to game on.
"RUclips and the internet becoming super popular". LOL. Welcome to 10 years ago I guess? Not that I disagree with the sentiment of the rest of the video, but that intro is super silly.
Great video. This has always been my mindset when it comes to collecting. I never saw the appeal of having a "complete set" of games from a particular system. It's one thing for someone to acquire everything if it has a purpose, like a review, content, etc. But just to have it sit on a shelf? I don't get it and so many RUclipsrs do this and it's even worse when they come off like they're not financially stable and take so much from fans when they have this ridiculous collection of junk behind them that they've never talked about on their channel. And I 100% agree about the collector's editions. I hate when I see brand new IPs launch with a collector's edition and it has a statue of a character no one even knows yet. Then you play the game, realize it's not really your favorite game or the best character, but you have this statue just sitting on your shelf just because. Equally offensive is when collector's editions just come with dumb trinkets and junk literally nobody has any use for. That's what has put me off of all the Resident Evil collector's editions. As much as I'd like statues of those characters, the price is just way too jacked up for all the extra crap that's included that's not even worth anything.
Good point about having games for content. When I started to upload regularly here I know I went a little crazy because there was so much I wanted to make a video about

Switch is a weird one for me because they aren't far from the best versions of game but I guess people have nostalgia for nintendo
Good advice. I think sometimes people can get carried away (myself included) the tendency to hoard/collect can be a blessing and a curse
I get you about having vast interests, I keep wanting to collect smaller sets of things but then a bunch of those
As a kid I grew up on only Nintendo games & I missed out on playstation & xbox consoles.
Well said. Thank you for that.
Thanks for sharing
I wish I've seen this video before buying all of these games because there's a lot of games that are both because they said it was in the top 30 best game.
Limited Run of SOTN and Rondo is a must own for the castlevania fan though.
I did get it, love those games
Me too. That and the OG Castlevania collection is so good. When they to the advance collection I’ll be grabbing that too.
@@cherokeefit4248 yea I'd love to get that as well because I really enjoy Castlevania games
SPOT ON! LIKED AMD SUBBED!
Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing!
Cool topic. I personally never understood the collector's editions. Too many trinkets.
Thanks for watching
I personally could care less who likes what I collect… I collect for me and for no one else 😊
Exactly
I think a lot of what made it awful is finally turning around, the scheme with heritage auctions and that grading company, the get rich quick hype is going away. Prices are starting to normalize now that the market is flooded. Look at 3ds games now, earlier this year the Mario Luigi games were going for at minimum $40 and just this morning today I've seen 5 on marketplace locally for 25 or less.
Yea that and the pandemic definitely spiked a lot of stuff to the moon.
You’re right I cancelled the Hogwarts collectors edition, as they were charging nearly £300 for a shitty wand that hovers about half a cm of the base not only that it had a horrible white wire with plug looked horrible
For some they can be cool but when you think about what you really get for the extra cash most are not worth
Most of that game isn't even on the physical disc, you dodged a bullet
Personally I'm collecting N64, PS2 and PS3 just because they're my most memorable consoles as a kid!
Nice!
Really enjoyed your take and i agree..
Thanks for watching!
It's the monitized RUclipsrs who keep shoving all this stuff down our throats making us feel like we need to buy before it's to late.....
Well, there's that and the inevitable move into all-digital, which is where the video gaming industry is headed.
Kinect was very popular. Don't let neckbeards online fool you. Genuine gaming fans liked it a lot. It sold 30 million despite the hate train trying to derail it. Kinect helped 360 a fair amount.
I think a lot of people want to forget it but the number of games out there doesn't lie. It was a big thing for sure
Yea it's a good point I think people like to see people with a lot think of celebrities etc
Facts!
New generation of youth ain’t gonna care. As we entering digital era all games purchases are tied to accounts and can just re-download them. And there’s emulation of all these older games. Most classics have been rebooted remastered or been released in collection compilations like crash trilogy, sonic origins, resident evil remakes
Will they care if the servers or services that held those downloads go down? 🤔
i hate myself for having expensive taste, even in the late 90s early 2000s i was buying games like saturn radiant silvergun and 4meg games like d&d, traded them all in constantly though to purchase the newer releases like an idiot> Nowadays I do try to purchase stuff im interested in but its stuff thats usually not cheap
And as long as you dont mind it being expensive thats your choice. Thanks for the input!
Well said good sir
Thanks for checking it out
Very good points for me I go for more nintendo and Sega collecting or any games in general that i used to play back then and for collector's editions for an example I like fire emblem so I went to invest in newest one for switch been collecting for 6 years and form my point of view is hey to each of there own but I feel enjoyment it's fun to collecting never let anyone let you different I mean God there's people that collect moives what the point of that oh well who cares end of the day where will all this stuff go on to people's shelfs no matter what
Thanks for sharing
Agreed, I don’t collect anything sega or Xbox 🤮
That's fair
Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it
i heard it... now what?
Implement changes
@@Shnickerman i know, i was just being snarky... great vid btw!
I can relate to not having enough time and collecting stuff from childhood
Bro spitting faxx!
You know it
Can I have a snicker or what im hungry
Oh no! Not capitalism!
you know what i dont like some channels sell there collection then thinking they can start fresh when games are tripling in price for me i like collecting xbox 360 ps1 ps2 ps3 ps4 ps5 xbox one ds 3fs switch psp ps vita if i can and wii u i wont collect cause i just hack my wii u
The point was that everyone is different. Collect what you want
@@thepickinpreacher stay tuned for my next video, I think you'll have good input
I apologize if I came across critical
hey
Hello
I think it's time for consoles to die off. Buying physical games on consoles becomes very expensive
over the lifespan of a console, consoles have limited edition and collector edition prints runs which are made in limited supply.
I winged that intro for sure
Phoenix resale is the worst for it, can’t stand the guy
Gigachad Xbox kinect enjoyer
There are dozens of us!
When I started to upload regularly here I know I went a little crazy because there was so much I wanted to make a video about
Thank you for saying this 🫡
I have kept my stuff from the 80’s and up. I only buy what I want without thinking of resale.
