- Batman Beyond was cancelled after just 3 seasons despite being a fan favorite amongst Batman fans. This video explains what led to the show being cancelled.

Canceled because it was too cool and lame ass executives didn't want to take a risk.
They don’t know what they were doing! 😡
Facts 😭
Who knows they may give it a final season it deserves. Hell I it took a decade for Samurai Jack to get his final season.
@@Batman_Beyond52 hopefully you are right.
@@Batman_Beyond52 I would be equally afraid of new writers coming in and rebooting Batman Beyond with modern politically woke writing like with shows like Velma or Harley Quinn.
No, I don't think they can catch lightning in a bottle twice
Give me a single time in history where “executives” didn’t make somthing worse off insted of making it better.
“Executives” should leave the creative side to the people who actually work on the show and know what they’re talking about. Also, if tone and age appropriate content were what they worried about, just move the show to another block. Somehow we keep getting new seasons to shows that are asinine but nothing for the most iconic ones who have stood the test of time. Corporate BS took away Spectacular Spider-Man too.
anthem
bioware removed the flight, the one good element, until eas president told them put it back in or he'd cancel it entirely
There was a page on tv tropes I stumbled on once of a Hercules comic that had him take on a young boy as a sidekick. It focused on comedy. Apparently the whole setup was an executive's idea and it worked out. Unfortunately I can't find the page now, but they explicitly pointed it out.
Batman beyond itself was the executives wanting a more light hearted alternative to BtAS with a young batman in school.
Turned out great, but then again the animation team kinda flipped the idea on its head, huh?
There are exceptions to a general rule, I don't question the basic premise though.
But that said I do wonder if the bad examples are just brought to the limelight whereas the small little mandated edits that made things better aren't talked about much.
How many times have creators taken those strict limits given to them and made something really creative and novel out of it? Instead of doing only what they wanted and ending up creating self-indulgent, and worse yet, simplistic?
Edit: ending up creating *something* self-indulgent.
Star Trek Insurrection. The executives made a very good and fundamental point about the conflict that the writers ignored.

I’m watching this show for the first time as a 22 year old and GOD DAMN is it cool.
I would love to be able to watch it for the first time again. Enjoy my bro💯
It’s really great !!
@@nicktalksbatman I’ve only seen the first 9 episodes and I’m enjoying it. I love how different it is and the cyberpunk aesthetic. I never knew I wanted an old mentor Bruce Wayne in my life.
This was a time when they ACTUALLY knew how to make good series.
Bro it’s acid fever dream color rich kick ass dark edgy gothic nut kickin badass. I love it. I loved it when I was 10 and I still think it’s a fire show with beautiful animation
It was a great show
It was! Sad it ended the way it did. And even if they tried bringing it back it just wouldn’t be the same without Conroy.
Is. Still is. Was would mean the show is now stuck in a "keep circulating the tapes" hell.
I’m still rewatching it even today. I still want a continuation (even if Kevin Conroy is gone 😢) of this masterpiece that is part of my childhood. 😢
yeah for the most part the only problems i really have with the show are bruce and barbara being romantically involved at some point and that terry is technically bruces son because theres no reason for him to be
@@michaelandreipalon359 True lol it is a great show
I just want Batman Beyond appearance on the big screen at this point.
God that’d be awesome
@@arthurfleck629 ikr!
I am on board with that idea. Even more so if they get Michael Keaton as old man Bruce.
If I become a billionaire one day I will make it happen.
Man, you know how dark Batman Beyond gets. Are we really ready for it in the big screen?
It was my favorite Batman cartoon because of the future aesthetic. So cool
I was addicted to this show when I was young. Shame it never got the love it deserved. An M-rated reboot of this would rock now that the fans are all grown up lol
Well it has three seasons, a movie, and a proper ending in JL Unlimited. That's more then you can say about other shows that just got cancelled outta no where and left on a cliff hanger.
I’ll take that.
Born in 94 loved watching this as a kid
95 and one of the few American series unique enough to remember
Man, this show was fire
Terry is just Bruce Wayne with lips.
wouldnt be fair to say that since hes also more lighter
He literally half asian.
@@yetanothergamingchannelyag2139He’s actually half Irish, hence his red haired parents and last name
Loved this show. It definitely deserves a remake today.
No remakes. The way these companies have been treating remakes has been horrendous.
At least it DID get an epilogue. The last episode of season 1 (?) of Justice League Unlimited gave us that, and its pretty satisfying.
Making Terry Bruce's son was the dumbesr thing they could have done.
@@joncook7510nope. They idea of the Batman Beyond project by Cadmus was genius. It even included the character from mask of phantasm and it has one of the best scenes discussing what it means to be batman and why Bruce is special. Amazing epilogue for an amazing show.
Epilogue was Season 2's finale.
@@joncook7510Not necessarily dumb. It made perfect sense as to why Terry was the best choice to be Bruce Wayne’s successor. Even when Wayne retired as Batman he knew that crime would still be an issue in Neo-Gotham henceforth the saying “The World Does Need a Batman”.
@@ready4dre3000 I never said Terry shouldn't have been Bruce's succesor, I said I hated that he turned out to be his son. It would have been way cooler that someone could still be a batman like superhero and not have to be related to Bruce.
With one badass intro!!!
That intro is so badass
@CalvinClassic-ht4ow shit I some times listen to it when I get the urge to hear it
If Samurai Jack had a revival, maybe Batman Beyond could as well.
No more Kevin Conroy as Bruce though 😢
It wouldn’t be good now. Bruce Timm isn’t half the writer he used to be.
@Michael-es5ft maybe a sound alike could be used, or if it cant, what about AI.
@@babyfaceaviator7862 to hell with ai shit
I'd flip if they decided to bring it back at this point

but a man can only dream
Such a great show. I rewatched it while i was sick in bed.
How dare they cancel this masterpiece, it was part of my childhood! I want a continuation of Batman Beyond!!!
This serie showed me that Terry McGinnis is the only one who can take over the mantle as Batman after Bruce Wayne.
It could've went to adult swim for more adult content.
We need a Batman show geared to little kids.
You know what kids love? Cyberpunk.
Great show and ahead of its time. Glad I was there to witness and enjoy.
I was devastated because this show was very personal to me and it was nice to see Batman in a futuristic setting and Batman return of the Joker was one of the best animated movies I ever saw.
Always and forever my favorite DCAU show
It’s sad that I just recently found out that static x does the theme
Though we'll all admit that we should've at least seen more "Justice League Beyond" action and some character arcs like Dana's and the McGinnis family's, at least it wasn't ended with a The Zeta Project/The Spectacular Spider-Man kind of cliffhanger, for the show thankfully wrapped up a bunch of long running loose ends that would have given us headaches for a long, long time.
And besides, there's the "true" series finale of both BB and Justice League Unlimited in the form of "Epilogue". #KeepEpilogueASecret
Edit: In the meantime, if one doesn't want the BB saga to end anticlimactically either on "Unmasked" (the airdate series finale) or "Countdown" (production order finale, and also a Zeta Project crossover that admittedly feels more like a sequel ep to "Zeta", fittingly so), then I'll recommend ending it on the Return of the Joker film, preferably the Uncut release.
Batman Beyond is the 2nd best Batman series of all time right after Batman: TAS.
Agreed!
Agreed
my favorite batman
I really loved this show. They need to continue it. Also they should make it into a live action movie
This is why I turned to the comics. There's been 6 "seasons" ( volumes ) of Batman Beyond throughout the years. Even recently theres still some being made.
They pickup on storylines from the show and even from Justice Leage and continue to expand on them. Very cool!
I really hope we get a Batman Beyond comic to finally give us a satisfying ending to this amazing show.
There’s some excellent Batman Beyond comics out there for sure, I’m partial to “10,000 Clowns”
Honestly it is *still* a refreshing addition to the Batman mythos since it changed up a lot, like it being set so far off meant they had to think up new threats and surprisingly very little times had an old foe pop up, only three I remember was Bane, but he was old anyways, Mr Freeze, who was just a head, and Ra's, who was practically immortal anyways so it made sense he would still be kicking
Even though the show didn't get a "proper" ending, it still lived on through Static Shock and Justice League Unlimited.
It’s a timeless show !
I am still dreaming of a Batman Beyond Videogame with that artstyle.
Alot of good shows were cancelled back then. I still remember Technoman (Tekkaman Blade) that was cancelled. America wasn't ready for good animation yet.
By far my most favorite Batman, I want another season!!!
What a shame. Those executives should have been fired. They cancelled Batman beyond & continued the justice league makes no sense
But the shows finale was in justice league
I was born in the early 2000s so I watched this growing up as a kid
OK OK fine, I’ll rewatch the series for the 7th time.
Nothing wrong with that ! Timeless show !
I loved this show as a kid even now as an adult it's still fun to watch man I miss those days 👍
I'm not a batman fan, but I LOVED this show.
Kinda thought Robert Peterson should've played Terry McGinnis in the new Batman movie.
Amazing how many shows from this era all ended around the 52-54 episode mark, because of "low ratings" yet most were at their peak popularity.
Batman beyond was one of my favorite shows growing up, I collect memorabilia to this day over 2 decades later.
The amazing thing is they pulled off terry really really really damn well. And his relationship with Bruce. Also his suit and the way hes batman isnt the same as bruce because its adapted with the times so it doesnt feel like a stright up replacement.
Well I still got a nice conclusion from Justice League cartoon so I can't really complaint
One of the best shows ever for our childhoods! Dark and sinister and awesome
Yea I just wished they would’ve done it the right way and just had a proper ending for the season. But the suits and ties of WB aren’t too bright.
@nicktalksbatman oh I wish that too no worries. I just felt satisfied that at least WB realized that an amazing series like this needs SOME type of conclusion so they did that alternative to Justice League and they even ended it like the beginning of Batman series years prior. As opposed to other series like Spider Man that ended up in a cliffhanger and never got any conclusion.
Yeah it was the time when companies became puritan bit by bit and canceled all these amazing shows that weren't even for kids in the first place. Is so sad
It was a great conclusion. Amanda Waller really made a far fetched ending work. I also feel like a lot of characters need to have a finale with an aging hero. That's far superior to endless reboots.
@chrisdonovan8795 I absolutely agree. For starters Amanda shows how much she grew fond of Bruce. Not just respect him but deeply recognizing his work or how she even knows his secret identity to begin with. That alone shows not just mutual respect but trust. She never betrayed his secret.
And I agree that the way they showed Bruce aging and how his old age is now reflecting on the mistakes of his youth from the body fatigue till his broken relationships.
Well said. i didn't see Batman Beyond as a reboot or even a sequel after sequel. The amazing thing with it was that it was a seriss on its own right and gave us a new character to love and a totally original Batman.
What was the ending?
Loved watching it as kid rewatching it now I think it’s the reason I wanted to study media and animation as I got older
I still remember this and i dont think they had many viewers just because everyone was stuck on the other Batman cartoon.
It shows even Now WB still can't figure it out...!
I have yet to actually sit down and watch this. I nephews used to have DVDs of this and they would watch it and I only ever glimpsed a few episodes. I need to watch this.
It’s really an amazing show. Wish they did more seasons !
I think In this day and age it’s time this makes a comeback but marketed at young adults not kids
The show was way ahead of its time and I didn’t appreciate it enough….
Moving on from Kevin Conroy would be tough though.
@@nicktalksbatman I was thinking this as I typed it tbf 😅
But yeah it would massively hurt watching it even if they got someone else to do the voice :(
Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle had great chemistry
It really wasn't a bad show. I'm a Batman nerd and more into the original. But Batman Beyond had a great style and story. I found it to be darker and intended for an older audience. Which I really wish we could see more of today.
Yea it was great
From what I had read, WB was trying to put a lot of focus on Justice League and were using some of the same writers. It was too much work to do both shows, so they cancelled Batman Beyond to concentrate on Justice League.
I remember watching the show when I was only 4 or 5, it was awesome. They should at least make a last season to end it properly as they did for Samurai Jack.
Brings back great memories! I was about 10 years old when it came out.
I was watching this show when I was 6 years old, now 27 years of age and will still say this is how you make a childhood great
I saw something that said that a big reason why the show was canceled was because the creators were assigned to work on the Justice League show and thus couldn't focus their attention on both.
Im gonna be rewatching it again this show was my childhood
It never gets old !
At this point superhero genre needs to be rated M. We’ve all grown at this point
It won’t happen. The studios want to reach a large audience not just adults but kids. It’s always going to be about the money to them.
I'm glad it was a part of the DCAU and they could give it a proper ending in Justice League Unlimited's epilogue
if this is the case, the old WB execs would be rolling in their grave if they saw the original content streaming companies output (Game Of Thrones, Killing Eve, etc.)...lol Batman Beyond was relatively tame.
It just needed better villains and a better long standing arc.
It’s a cyberpunk Batman. Seeing as the cyberpunk is a trending genre, the people who cancelled it definitely made a HUGE mistake.
What else is new? Guys in suits and ties who know nothing about the actual characters don’t care unfortunately. Sad.
i remember this my childhood, this was one of the best for me
They should've kept it going. We only saw Terry bulk up at the end of a Justice League (can't remember if it was Unlimited or not) episode. But that in my opinion was a half-assed attempt to give Batman Beyond a "proper" ending, even though it was on another show (if that makes any sense).
Technically we did get an ending but it was in an episode from justice league unlimited called "epilogue".
Except for one thing before Batman Beyond was actually finished in 2006 they decided to do one last episode of the Batman Beyond called in this episode but this time it was not a serious it was a Justice League Unlimited because I guess they're running out episodes they got to wrap up the season of with the Big Bang finale they thought this was perfect idea to end of not Justice League Unlimited but the Batman Beyond as well so origin how it all started became a Batman Beyond like how he has a son and that's why it all started it makes sense so at least we got answers during the season finale of the Justice League Unlimited that's why
I feel like this is only a small part of the reason. The actual reason is that a lot of the staff got moved to the justice league animated show which produced crazy good numbers and made much more sense to keep instead of Batman beyond. That’s why the ending occurred in that show too.
DC executives seriously need to be fired.
Melanie walker is pretty 10/10 so there's that
Denis Villeneuve is the obvious choice, but honestly for the most freshest and biggest appeal take I think we can get with a Director… is Chad Stahelski
The action, the style the pure visual experience I think we would get from a Batman Beyond film made by him would be amazing
Bro this was a fantastic show that had the potential to be better than the original Batman. You have no idea how bought in I was to the show along with others
It was really special.
I'm glad we did get a satisfactory ending in Justice league Unlimited with The Once and Future Thing and Epilogue.
It's getting a massive amount of love by Batman fans and it needs to be continued while unfortunately having to explain the death of Bruce Wayne
That could work. Kind of like how they never explained the death of Alfred. I think what made Batman beyond work so well is Conroy was there and it gave you the past and future together. Not sure how well it would work without Bruce.
But that static shock tho👀
Moral of the story: When WB executive have a problem with the show or movie, cancel the executives and not the show. Executives are replaceable, shows like Batman beyond are not
Was an awesome show !
This show was so inspirational and immersive when I was young. This absolutely would do amazing with an M Rated gritty sequel launched today. RIP Kevin Conroy.
I guess I'm a bit older, because I grew up with the original Animated Series and it's always going to beat out Beyond for me, but I can see why it was so popular.
Still, hard to beat with all the episodes and darker tone that was allowed back then.
It was the first kids show to depict regular criminals trying to kill the hero with guns and actually shooting them. Hell, it happens in the intro lol (except they don't get a chance to shoot)
*PLUS, we got Mask of the Phantasm. Loved that movie, actually showed that Bruce desperately wants a normal life, to the point he begs forgiveness at his parent's graves just for not wanting to be Batman.
Batman beyond will always impress me cause it had every reason to suck
the premise stemming from "make batman a teenager" sounds stupid on paper but got turned into this really unique take on the world that no one would have expected
This show took on real future issues like being addicted to VR! Today this is the real because VR is so awesome if it advanced like this show it could be exactly what the show depicted. I loved the flying Batmobile; now we can actually see it today.... And im sure they got real bat suit somewhere out there and Ironman suits as well
The funny thing is Batman Beyond was also created from executive meddling. WB Execs pitched “Make Batman a kid so children can relate!”, and this wound up being the result
They could've done much more with this. I loved this series. I wouldn't mind seeing a reboot of it.
It’s crazy cuz the show aged like wine.. if they’d tried to bring it back now it’ll probably be ruined
Batnan beyond was, and still is, AWESOME after 20 years.
Timeless show!
@@nicktalksbatman
Yes that's the word for it.
Too bad it was cut too soon.
I'm still upset we didn't get a Batman Beyond movie, we got another reboot of the main Batman story yet again instead
Batman Beyond will eventually happen with Michael Keaton. I think after Matt Reeve’s Batman will be the perfect time. Keaton will be a little older which fits the character of old Bruce.
I actually liked Beyond more than TAS. The idea of having a teenage Batman in a futuristic city with an old Bruce Wayne serving an Alfred-esque role always fascinated me. Also, I love how Beyond is pretty much Black Mirror before Black Mirror with its exploration of the pros, cons, and moral implications of technological advancement.
literally just started watching this a day ago now im getting youtube stuff about it
So, they cancelled a masterpiece of a show, JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN'T SET THE AGE RATING??
There’s a lot of different reasons why they cancelled. It wasn’t just one. Unfortunately all good shows end.
I loved Batman beyond, sad it got cut short
DC really dropped the ball the coolest thing they could have done with the DCEU would had Michael Keaton been elderly Batman to some kid for a movie.
A Batman Beyond animated movie with Spider-Verse animation would be so good
Both this and Transformers animated not getting their 4th season is wild
I remember watching this show in 2004/2005 great times they were 😢
Yessir !
@@nicktalksbatman you know it lol God bless brother
i have always said a batman beyond videogame would be badass during the day you play as terry mcginnis in school dealing with nash and other things a kid does during night you are batman as bruce wayne has passed it is up to you to become a better batman and perhaps allow your younger brother matt in as robin as was done in the comics
WHAT KIND OF NUMBERS WERE THEY EXPECTING CAUSE DIDNT THIS SHOW BLOW LIKE A NUKE
Wait . . . this show was geared for a young audience? It had some pretty mature themes, artwork, and storylines.
Terry McGinnis was born a few days ago iykyk😂😂
They have to change the design of Dee Dee as well to sexy one as well. :)
It got an epilogue episode in Justice League Unlimited that kind of wraped3up the series
The forgotten batman😢
Only the REAL ones don’t forget!
