I remember two performances from season 7 of American Idol, both of which I thought were excellent. David Archuleta's performance of "The Long and Winding Road" and this one.
Usually I agree with Simon, but not this time! It's 2021, and I still remember this! I can guarantee you Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber remembers this song/performance, based on his tearful reaction to it. ♡
It always looked to me that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber did not like David's performance, but I thought it was great. Definitely do not agree with Simon on this one, but he was the only judge I respected because he never sugarcoated his remarks and tried to always tell the truth. It's just his opinion anyway, but David did an excellent job singing this song and I really liked the changes he made to the version that Andrew composed.

I go to as many converts as I can, he is an incredible performer. Soooooooo loved by his fans!! Have you heard him sing "When you say you love me" ?? my favorite!!! if not, look for it here on utube or FB. it makes me cry!!!! and him too when he sang it at a concert in Salt Lake.

When he sings "Silent Night" it is incredible!! he gets a standing ovation, WHO ever gets a standing ovation for Silent Night?????? just David, they don't show it here but 21000 people stand up!! he sings it with so much spirit. You can find it on utube also. I have watch it over and over. I bought the DVD. David is one in a million!!!!!

I know there are die hard ALW fans out there and theyre probably just astonished but if you can appreciate opera, then you can appreciate other types of music as well and the ppl whop make those songs that ppl who arent opera fans. Without that, others may never hear these beautiful songs, so I say good job David! It was fantastic!!

I think Paula nailed it ... Turning a song that was written for the theater into a completely different style deserves praise for the risk David took in doing it that way. Even David himself said singing it back to such an outstanding composer in a style so completely different from the way it was written would have to be nerve-wracking. Sir Andrew said it: When that happens, we should all be saying "Bravo!"
Simons comment tells us that David is a true star. He said it was perfectly pleasant (read: good and well sung) but it wasn't his best performance. Goes to show how even Simon knew that David has an amazing gift and WOW factor. I see Simon's remarks as a back handed compliment to the talents of David Archuleta. Thanks Simon! :-)
If he can sing a song intended for a SOPRANO and do well then "bravi bravi bravissima" to you David Archuleta sure he didn't sing it like an opera singer but he ISN'T AN OPERA SINGER and this isn't a "who's-the-best-opera-singer" contest! Brava David Archuleta, brava

Anyway Simon said this was David's weakest performance, and while I do think David didn't demonstrate the full strength and beauty of his voice in this performance, it DID becomre one of his most memorable ones! -Even to this day, over a decade later, I absolutely long to hear David sing this song! He's got such a natural ability to put genuine emotion into the lyrics. This song always tugs on my heartstrings when David sings it! 😍
