From Lord Glorfindel, we learn that when fighting enemies twice your size on a high mountain, first get a haircut.
or wear a man-bun in battle
Or braid It up
Borimir “One does not simply walk into Mordor.”
Glorfindel “hold my luscious locks.”
‘Even if you chose for us an elf-lord, such as Glorfindel, he could not storm the Dark Tower, nor open a road to the Fire by the power that is in him’ - Gandalf
Glorfindel: approaches
Balrog: "Wait, why do *I* hear boss music?"
"I'm supposed to be the boss! That elf is supposed to be afraid of me!"
I have always loved Glorfindel's character and I still think he deserves much more attention and his own mini series or movie. He is just too epic to ignore.
Henry Cavill casting as Glorfindel? Witcher season 1 gave me that idea but still crazy to think about it 🗣️💨🔥
It's interesting the Glorfindel died in a similar way to Gandalf when fighting a Balrog. Both would have their bodies be reclaimed by eagles. Both would live again.
There are a lot of similarities (or analogous storylines) in the Silmarillion and LOTR.
I noticed this too.
I also find it interesting that there is no information that Ecthelion was resurrected as well, also being slayed while slaying a Balrog. Both Gandalf and Glorfindel had there bodies recovered, maybe that has something to do with it?
@@AngmarCosplay I believe all elves return to Valinor and are resurrected, after death but Glorfindel was allowed to return to Middle Earth.
this is what happens. all elves get reincarnated in Valinor after a time. Glorfindel just rocks so hard that he got to come back quickly. he died to save the guy who was going to save them all. it came with some perks. in the third age we dont hear about elves going to middle earth. so Glorfindel has prolly been back in middle earth a while. he respawned and then got the fight. and saved frodo. who went on to save them all.
I think the reason the nazgul were afraid of him is because he had embraced something that they had traded everything to avoid, and come back stronger for it. He had seen death and welcomed it.
That's a very good point!
Death is fundamentally different for Elves and Men. Elves go west when they pass from Middle Earth (even from violence) and men seem to go beyond the wall of night (though that's not definite, within Arda they just know that Men go outside of Arda when they pass.) Men, the ringwraiths included, if knowledgeable would know that their passing and Glorfindel's passing are not the same thing.
Perhaps he is simply so bright within the spirit-realm that his mere presence can cause them harm.
AMEN to that! If you are in league with the BIG GUY, fear not death!
@@KatanamasterV true.
I think the nazgul were afraid was because like Frodo they could see him as he really was with the light of the trees because he came from the west same with galadriel
Glorfindel was seated at Elrond's right hand at the Feast for Frodo's recovery. That should say all that needed to be said about him, and that he was indeed that Glorfindel who fell in the passes of the Encircling Mountains.
"Frodo looked at them in wonder; for he had never before seen Elrond, of whom so many tales spoke; and as they sat upon his right hand and his left, Glorfindel, and even Gandalf, whom he thought he knew so well, were revealed as lords of dignity and power.
Gandalf was shorter in stature than the other two; but his long white hair, his sweeping silver beard, and his broad shoulders, made him look like some wise king of ancient legend. In his aged face under great snowy brows his dark eyes were set like coals that could leap suddenly into fire.
Glorfindel was tall and straight; his hair was of shining gold, his face fair and young and fearless and full of joy; his eyes were bright and keen, and his voice like music; on his brow sat wisdom, and in his hand was strength."
My favorite elf in all of Tolkien’s work, the fact that the Witch-King fled in absolute screaming terror at the very sight of him is just SO badass! And then he prophesied
As a kid seeing the movie for the first time the nazgul were super scary. Unbeatable. Aragorn was a total badass for fighting them all off. I thought no one got tougher than that. The nazgul saw this dude and noped right out of there. Daaaamn
This guy is a freaking badass, nuff said.
Gondolin was really the peak of elven greatness in Middle Earth. Beautiful, powerful and the home of so many great elves.
You could argue he's one of the strongest elves since he was resurrected with the power of a lesser Maiar.
Without a doubt
@@DragonoidBerserker1 Although I do believe Luthian had him beat since she was The offspring of a maiar
@@madambutterfly1997 Shame she was never known for fighting
@@DragonoidBerserker1 she did better against Morgoth than Fingolfin
@@madambutterfly1997 you have a point there
After defeating a Balrog, his fighting days were at his height. His presence and council were his powers in the second life.
Defeating Balrog require way more than fighting skills alone, we are talking about lesser Ainur, Maiar level entity. Glorfindel is one of those few in the legendarium who reach above their station so to speak. He is considering the timing of his character creation a wizard prototype, after his resurrection he was way more powerful then before but his "job description" was to guide and enforce, not to lead. The similarities with the created after him 5 wizards are quite a lot.
No dear, he died fighting that Balrog.
Glorfindel was sent west from Rivendell to search for Frodo because was most able withstand the nine together, he was pretty badass in the third age. Too bad he was not with gil-galad against sauron
If memory serves, he didn’t just killed any Balrog, he killed the “king” of the Balrog with his helmet! I assumed he must had killed a number of other Balrogs to get to said Balrog king.
@@azneatdog just to be clear, Ecthelion and Gothmog killed each other, while Glorfindel and some unnamed Balrog both died fighting each other. In any case: fighting balrogs is not good for your health no matter how bad ass you are.
Possibly my favorite character. The Elf so bad ass even the gods said "Wow, he died how? That so bad ass. Lets bring him back!"
It was brave of Glorfindel to face a balrog to protect the people of Gondolin, and it's awesome that he was able to defeat it.
Thanks for making this video. I really enjoy learning more about Tolkien's characters.
I’m actually crying at the death of Glorfindel even though he was reborn
Relax. He's a makebelieve elf.
"Lord Glorfindel of the Golden Flower" just the name itself sounds like glory, honor and victory.
Or a Simp.....Didn't the Lannisters wipe out The Reach? lol
Dont compare loras tyrell or any of the song of ice and fire heroes to glorfindel, he would wipe out the lannister army by his lonesome 😂
Still chaps my ass that they didn't put him in the movies. I know they needed Arwen to be more than just Aragorns prize, but it would have been awesome to see him at least chase the nazgul into the river.
The Fellowship should have just been Glorfindel, Gandalf, and Frodo to carry the ring. They would have got it done in 6 months, tops!
I’m surprised he at the very least didn’t help in Lothlorien or Erebor, maybe even Gondor itself.
Don’t forget Master Samwise The Brave
Glorfindel probably had enough of any major fighting after being reincarnated...
Yeah just imagine him in the movies🤣🤣🤣3 hours of orcs running for the lives.😳😵🤯🤪
That would make Tolkien’s Fellowship faster 😜
One of my favorite characters from the books, from acts of valor in the Fall of Gondolin to saving Frodo in the days just before the Fellowship of the Ring
Glorfindel is definitely one of my favorite characters. I was watching a video on Glorfindel from The Clueless Fangirl and she brought up a theory and I wonder what you think about it. It’s said that Glorfindel comes from a House of Princes and he was close to Turgon that it’s possible that he was the son of Irimë daughter of Finwë and Indis.
Hey Angel! I actually talked to Helena about that today, it is quite an interesting theory! It is definitely possible, although if it were the case I imagine Tolkien would have explicitly said so, since it has implications with the high kingship of the Noldor, but I really like the thought! Perhaps Turgon and Glorfindel were cousins indeed!
@@MenoftheWest I find it interesting how most of the main characters of the first age are related.
I love Glorfindel, Ecthelion and Turgon very much. I wonder why Ecthelion was never re embodied because, imo, he was just as badass as Glorfindel 💜
Last time I was this early, Middle Earth was still ablaze from Melkor's overturning of the Two Lamps.
Glorfindel has always been my favourite character in literature, thank you for finally making this, Yoystan
Please do an Epic Character History on Ulmo. He's my favorite of Valar
HELL YEAH
One of my favorite characters! A true badass and hero, one of the greatest elves ever.
Excellent video Dunadain! Lord Glorfindel is a fascinating character. He's worthy of his OWN book. Given everything he's done.
Damned Balrogs like to drag their opponents down instead of downing them in honest battle!
They're sore losers.
@@Myth_or_Mystery76
In real life, they want to lure as many of us down into eternal ruin as they can. Posting this a week after Easter, the culmination of the week wherein churches commemorate the desperate lengths Eru went to to combat this.
About time! One of my favorite Elf lords!
Elf Lord...lol....what an Oxymoron.
Awesome character! Really wish he was in the movies
"If you borrow my horse without permission one more time, Arwen..."
To stand against a Balrog all alone, such bravery...
Pffft, Gandalf did it too.
I faced one.....it ended in a draw. My legs may have been hewn by his fire blade and my arms may have been ripped from their sockets by the power of the whip's pull but at least my sword is at attention and my big bag of jewels swing mightly still!! Ho!
I think I would have just killed myself to get it over with lol
@@hillridgejohnathan4129 courage merry courage for our friends
Fingolfin "Bravery???...Cute" 🖒😉
Tolkien was a large advocate of power levels, as seen when Glorfindel drove back the Nazgul and when he was declared too strong for the fellowship. Akira Toriyama probably learned from Tolkien when it comes to scaling characters.
So mighty was Lord Glorfindel that The Witch King himself feared him!
Wonderful telling of Glorfindel. I loved his character in LOTR and sad he was not featured in the movies. Thankyou! 💕
Man this elf has always been my favorite.
Can't see how there's any doubt that the TA Glorfindel was the same who slew the balrog in the pass. Multiple Nazgul noped the fk out immediately when they saw him coming, and they were apparently powerful enough to have a go at Gandalf on Weathertop.
BTW I came here from Nerd of the Rings. Glad to find another great channel.
You should obviously do Echtelion next.
One of my favorite characters from the book, its a shame we didn't saw him in movie adaptations but i hope we will see him in the upcoming serirs.
P.s. Fantastic video, this is really something that Tolkien would be proud!
My fav ellon from the first age! Thanks Mellonenamin!
May the Stars watch over you always!
Mondos seems like he has the worst job of all Valar. He's basically Hades from Hercules Not to mention his power to see the future and foretell it in Prophecy
Mandos, not Mondos lol
I'm a simple Bard, I see a vid by Yoystan... I watch it and give it a like!
AHHH MY FAVORITE ELF!!
thank you yoystan!
Was just about to go to sleep and then I see a Men of the West video about my favourite Character Glorfindel. Thank you!
Glorfindel:
"Soldiers get your hair done! WE ARE GOING TO WAR!"
I love learned about LoTR from your channel, keep up the good work.
As always a great video. It's great to see how over time you've developed this really great narrator type flow to your voice when you do these videos. Always draws my attention in!
Awesomely done! Thanks for this synopsis. Enjoyed it a lot!
Loved the video as always
This was so good. Glorfindel is also one of my favorites. I really enjoyed this video. Nicely done.
I'm so early! XD Great vid btw!
A lovely and full panoply of the lives of Glorfindel, lyrically expressed.
These videos are awesome when in between classes. Thanks man for all the hard work and making isolation in college more bearable!🙏
Thank you for another great video :)
Great video! I was always fascinated by this character! Keep up the good work! : )
Another great video about such a mythic character. Whenever my fellowship in our The One Ring game meet him, they are always a little awestruck at him because of his nobility and sense of purpose.
Always my favourite Tolkien character. Another great video, thank you. :)
You r soo talented Yoystan.
One of my or just maybe even, my favorite elf. Great video
A great disservice Peter Jackson did by not having Glofindel in any of the movies. Even just a Cameo would have been enough.
There was a cameo
He showed up in the Council of Elrond and at Aragorn’s wedding I believe, he just said nothing and wasn’t mentioned
@@Ismael-kc3ry So for all we know it could have just been some random elf.
@@hudsonball4702 I believe he shows up in the credits, but I’m not sure
Yes he is at both the council and the wedding
Imagine how awesome it would've been if glorfindel had shown up at helms deep instead of haldir
Men of the west you should do a video on the strongest elves.
Imagine how awesome it would've been for Glorfindel to show up at the battle of Palinor Fields
How can you misspell Pelennor that badly
@@oscar18034 It's a comment from 6 months ago that I've long since forgotten about. So climb down from your cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.
You have a great speaking voice man it’s really easy to listen too
An interesting video this is, good job!
Lol 😆 right now I’m playing Skyrim and you upload this video just now. Perfect timing!! I know I know, different worlds but pretty much the same.
Love anything about elves or wizards or anything in history of middle earth
Do a video on What if Glorfindel Took the One Ring!!!
You know all that grumbling in Black Speech, that the ring does when someone hits it or stares at it?
If Glorfindel took the ring, they would turn into hentai squeals and moans
One of your best. Poetry. Thank you!
One can hope we see Glorfindel accompanied with the Blue Wizards in the new Series on the way.
Thank you for this glorious story of Gloryfindel ^^
A very great video as always Men of the West. Also oh I like Glorfindel so much, he was so badass during the first age, he killed many orcs, probably have killed spiders, possibly have killed trolls, a balrog and other badass moments that he have done.
Thank you.
In my head canon I see him accompanying the Twins on Elrond's orders. "Protect my sons"
Nice one.👍
Amazing brother
Thanks , great image in the thumbnail
Awesome
You speak of Glorfindel, as if his golden armor is anything to be given praise, but I can just imagine the brazen chest of the man I hear now. You, Yoystan. I can hear the rich tones that seem almost mythical, the depth and vast chasm that you hold inside plays for us a rich and wonderful tone. The voice of the rolling winds and thundering streams, these all come from your golden and wonderful chest. If only we could hear you sing more
Dying in a blaze of glory so epic that you get brought back to life just to wreck more things is easily one of the most metal things one can do.
man of the west you're awesome !
Great job on the LOTR lore!
Interesting stuff!..;)
I just finished lord of the rings after a good cry session, I would love to watch this but I’m pretty messed up, I’m going to miss it so much
What a hero! My favourite elf. I would love to have songs sung about my deeds after my fall.
Someone on the Good Guys side should really have arranged some Balrog-fighting drills that included noting that if you strike down a Balrog when above a deep drop, make sure you jump out of the way quickly so the Balrog can't pull you down with it. Think of all the misery that could have been avoided!
All I can think of is Henry Cavill as Geralt from the Witcher. Just give him pointy ears, elven armor and keep everything else... maybe add some emotion but ya get the idea. I think Henry Cavill would be a good choice to play either Glorfindel or Fingolfin.
Turin would be suitable for Henry Cavill...
How about Robert Pattinson...
@@pratiksavaliya3890 hell no! If anything Robert Pattinson would make an ok Turin, not the best but I think it makes more sense than Henry cavill.... I think keanu, Brad Pitt or maybe even Christian bale would play a decent Turin. After seeing Henry in the Witcher it just seems like he'd be way better off playing an elf...
@@thegreyworldwalker8882 Alexander Skarsgård another good choice.
@@airixxxx Yes! That dude was practically MADE to play Turin!
I am not sure how any of this fits into the Star Wars universe but these videos truly inspire me to rewatch the series
Eventually the Elves would learn how to use the force, and Dwarves would develop lightsabers! It'll all come together ;)
Thanks, I was really confused
@@MenoftheWest does that mean the hobbits developed death sticks?
No he said lightsabers, it is pretty straight forward
@@DiracComb.7585 lmao i'm laughing so hard!
Still mad he wasn't in the movies
Great tale!
“No Earnur king, his day of doom has not yet come, and not by the hands of men shall he fall.”
Hopefully, we see him in the show!
Glorfindel is pretty much thr answer to the question "What if Chuck Norris were an elf?"
Hey can you do another video on Fingolfin vs Morgoth? It's one of my favorite duels and moments in the book.
"If you want him, come and claim him!"
Ok controversial statement coming: I believe it to b true that it was a wise decision to edit him out of the films; in terms of Frodo and the Ring and the journey he didnt really add anything
THAT being said he definitely needs a mini series all his own because....well just watch the vid 🤣
Also I want his silver armor for Christmas 😍
Why not the gold ?
@@darthgorthaur258 cuz for one I look better in silver
And wen the sun hits the gold armor itll make it look like i have Jaundice 🤣🤣🤣
I believe otherwise as far as the choice not to include Glorfindel. I believe he brought WAY too much to the story that could not be explained in short order. And his character would make most others superfluous.
@@PleaseNThankYou Yeah, you drop an elf lord of this magnitude into the first act, someone who can simply stand against the nine riders directly, and then in act three someone's bound to ask "Why don't we get that guy from earlier? He seemed powerful."
@@PleaseNThankYou @Scott Hess ....ok...wait you two...we are discussing why the silver and not gold in this thread lol..we will get to the superfluous discission of whether or not he should of been in the film shortly, but let's get the important stuff done first... Eru looks poorly on silver glad elf's...FACTS!!!! lol...
Pretty epic!
Putting Lord Glorfindel in the movies would have activated superman mode and eliminated the danger.
So is this the same Glorfindel saved Frodo from the Ringwraiths in Fellowship of the Rings novel?
The very same
Glorfindel has a great story. But I can't get past why he would have just sat out the the whole war of the ring in Rivendell. I get it why he wouldn't have joined the fellowship. But why was he not taking part elsewhere? Unless, he was and Tolkien never chose to write about it. I would like to think Glorfindel would have been at Lothlorien to help defend it while the Battle of Pelennor Fields was going on.
Not to mention he's on the list of people who are actually Resurrected. So there's Beren and luthien Gandalf Glorfindel who else?
Finrod is another! I know Dagor Dagorath spoke of the return of Túrin and Fëanor as well!
@@MenoftheWest why bring back Fëanor? He practically started this mess when he created the silmarils. He swore of bloody oath to retrieve the silmarils because of the significance of the oath killing his fellow elves was a lesser crime than actually going back on the oath itself. After he died his sons pretty much were fighting other elves and morgoth trying to find those damn rocks. It became a 3 faction War Between the Sons of Fëanor, The Elves, and Morgoth.
@Dick Dastardly "pretty serious beef" is probably the biggest understatement of the ages from the lamps to the first lol...
how does this guy not have his own movie?
You should do a Tuor epic character history.
