- Shelob the spider was a vile and evil monster in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. She was the spawn of Ungoliant, one of the most terrible creatures to have walked in Middle-earth. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Shelob in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Shelob was terrifying enough, I can only imagine how imposing and terrifying Ungoliant was.
Enough to make a vala, Melkor even, to tremble at her sight alone.
Its unimaginable. Even her size was too great to great
I had a dream once that I was a immortal god being with super strength like superman, super speed and flight, could heal anything and anyone with a touch make things come alive with a touch , turn anything or anyone to any creature I wanted and could shoot solar beams out of my hands etc and brought enlightenment and prosperity to middle earth after sauron died, I tamed Shelob by beating her up and the people of Gondor had a huge supply of spider silk to make elaborate fine clothes, dresses, shirts, pants , hats and rope and tapestries and it's spider silk it made their clothes bullet proof basically being safer if attacked and made gondor more wealthy and went to moria to help clear out the orcs for the dwarves to recolonize it and Killed the watcher lake monster at moria and brought it to gondor and people had a big feast eating lots of sushi that night and boy did they feast and for some reason they teriyaki, orange and Wassabi sauces but I couldn't eat it 🤢, so i asked them to just cook me a whole beef cow filling a table full of beef etc with a pile of melted cheese, ale and pipe weed and we celebrated lol 😎😂😂
I like to think she survived but with the downfall of Sauron she was left alone in her tunnel, not many orcs coming her way and would eventually eat herself in hunger like her mother.
Who would win?
The child of a demigod who has been prowling the outreaches of Mordor for generations and been the terror of men and orcs alike.
OR
Some wholesome, unyieldingly loyal boi
If we control shelob we can use the spider silk to make great yarn and armor clothing etc
gardeners know the best ways to deal with pests, after all
With a magic sword, wholesome boi con one magic sword.
Wasn’t Sam holding the ring of power during this battle? I think he was in the movie but I’m not sure about the book. Plus his enchanted sword, and the vial of Galadriel containing start light of the Silmaril also all played a factor in this fight
Elanor: "DAD, THERE'S A SPIDER IN MY ROOM!"
Sam: "That's cute dear."
*Elanor smacks the Timeless Void out of that spider*
Elanor: "Dad, I killed the spider."
Sam: "That's my girl."
Excellent comment
Sam: *wads up a roll of parchment* "EARENDILLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Sam defeating Shelob to save his best friends life and finding his courage is one of the most inspiring moments in fiction.
well, Frodo was his master or employer, no Frodo no pay lmao.

Tolkien’s experience with spiders as a child, can be definitely shown with this epic character. Bitten in South Africa by a poisonous spider and almost died.
I was hoping that someone else knew about this!!
Tarantulas are not venomous.
He said he didn't remember the experience and that it didn't play into writing the character.
@@glockparaastra I don't think you know very much about tarantulas...
@@ZiddersRooFurry "...when Ronald [Tolkien] was beginning to walk, he stumbled on a tarantula. It bit him, and he ran in terror across the garden until the nurse snatched him up and sucked out the poison. When he grew up he could remember a hot day and running in fear through long, dead grass, *but the memory of the tarantula itself faded, and he said that the incident left him with no especial dislike of spiders* . Nevertheless, he wrote more than once of monstrous spiders with venomous bites." - J.R.R Tolkien A Biography
Tolkien was specifically saying that the memory of the tarantula itself has long since faded to communicate that the incident didn't leave him with any hatred or ill will towards spiders, he still remembered the event occuring. Though, you are correct about this event not influencing his work at all.
I think she survived, by the way Tolkien treated she and her mother characters and their epilogues, it feels like he wanted them to remain as eternal ancient evils dwelling in the dark.
How lucky our Third Age friends have it! If Ungoliant was guarding Cirith Ungol...
If Ungoliant was around she wouldn't be guarding anything she'd probably eat Sauron and the then the world. lmao
Facts
@@GUMMRUCHK also facts
The Valar would probably have to be called in to deal with her.
@@LEGOMANIAC419 Probably, the only other being I can think of who might be able to fight her is Durin's Bane since Balrogs defeated her before.
My wife hates spiders. If I'm watching the movie she has to leave the room when Shelob appears.
“We could let HER do it.......yesss precious we could.......”
Speaking as a minor arachnophobe I did not like this character 😅
But, like her mother, she’s a good example of what gluttony and greed can do to a person if left unchecked
Yet I always found her relationship with Sauron fascinating; they hated each other yet used each other to their own means, an unlikely and volatile agreement 🤔
Either way hoped she died hahahahah
Every time I find one of her kids in my room I always yell DIE, SPAWN OF UNGOLIANT 🤣🤣🤣
I don't think Sauron or Shelob felt particularly strongly about eachother. Indeed, the book almost implies that Sauron LIKES Shelob a little bit.
@@mycaleb8 Exactly!! Its so strange and intriguing 🤔
Not like sitcom worthy or anything but still 😅
She was saurons cat...
@@EdgarStyles1234 🤣🤣🤣
That's pretty good
She took the form of a spider. Her true dark form must be even more frightful coming from the darkness.
Almost like IT, the thing. I'd like to believe that both Ungoliant and Shelob could assume a spider-like form, different from their true one.
Shelby was born in this form. She couldn't change it.
@@chadwhitfield6946 Shelby, I loled
This isn't like IT from steven kings universe. Shelob can't change her form. Just a spider that only wants to eat.
I like to imagine Sam having successfully sailed to Aman, and after meeting Frodo and Gandalf again, is approached by Ecthelion of the Fountain (who had been reembodied along with Glorfindel thousands of years prior). Ecthelion asks Sam if he is the hobbit who faced down Ungoliant's foul spawn and wielded the light of Earendil. Sam replies that he is, at which point Ecthelion pronounces him a retainer of the People of the Fountain to forever be sung of in Tirion upon Tuna.
I really really like that thought
I'm seeing poor Sam fainting clean out on hearing that, haha!
Then Turin hails him as "Dagnir Sheloba"
Awwww I love that 🥲😊🥰
Oh boy I can feel the arachnophobia kicking in. Seriously this thing freaked me out when I was a kid lol 😆
I remember being so sad as a kid this character was cut from the animated movies
Dude it would’ve given kids nightmares lol 😆
@@Steel-101 we would've survived. Kids these days don't have the spine we grew.
@@dragonmaster613 that’s a fact 👍🏼
I’m aracnophobic. I can’t imagine anything more terrifying than giant spiders
That’s interesting to me, I have mild arachnophobia, but giant spiders don’t really scare me much. Once they get much bigger than a cat they register in my mind as monsters rather than spiders.
something big enough to prey upon giant spiders?
@@regrettablemuffin9186 Same here. Huge spiders can't suddenly jump you and that is the scarierst hahaha
@Phuk Hyutoob they bother me in different ways, spiders make my skin crawl but a monster is just something that I wouldn’t want to have to fight but probably never will
perhaps, in her madness and injury, she consumed herself... just as her mother had so many years before...
If shelob did survive, I find it likely that Faramir and his descendants who would settle in Ithilien and rebuild Minas ithil wouldve had the toughest time keeping Shelob at bay as they tried protecting Gondor's borders. Shelob could've also gotten a cult, given how the corruption left by the nazgul in ithilien could drive men mad.
I think it is likely that Shelob either succumbed to her wounds or eventually wasted away.
However, as an arachnophile, I prefer to believe that she endured in some shadowy corner of the world, providing nightmare fuel for the men of the Fourth Age.
Ungoliant and Shelob gave me a healthy interest and respect for arachnids. Beautifully creepy.
Hey buddy here's a tricky theory for a future video. What if Sauron never joined Morgoth and stayed good? Who would take his place as the Dark Lord during the events of LOTR?
I had a similar *what if* where it was Aule (angered by the lesser status Eru had placed on his creations), who went evil instead of Melkor. Sauron siding with an evil Aule is just the perfect match.
I hope my Dad with Arachnophobia never sees this video. Great video so far!
you gave me tears with ur last thoughts bro..always respect to your work
You Madman actually did it, a Shelob video.
Shelob likely starved, given that Sauron was no more to send feeding to her door,
and Gandalf banning anyone from going to Minas Morgul.
p.s. i hope you do video for April the 1st.
"Let him go you FILTH!" - Samwise "the Brave"
Thank you for presenting us with another wonderful video. :)
Love your videos! It seems to me that Ungoliant and her sisters/daughters represent the industrialization and soiling of Tolkien’s beloved woods of his childhood. Also, expand this to the polluting of the natural world in general.
Always enjoy your videos! I also appreciate how you find a positive point to learn from each week, keep up the great work, Mellon.
Just like Shelob spins a web, you spin together a beautiful story and make us all gleeful. It’s truly bliss
Man its 00:30 at my place, and Im still watching your amazing videos!!!
Keep up with the good work....
Im always happy when I get a video notification from you!(:
Thanks Mench! :)
Appreciate all your videos. Thank you for all you do!
I remember going to see The Two Towers as a kid, and being really anxious about seeing Shelob (because that scene in the books is in the two towers) and being relieved, but also very confused, when the movie stopped short of Cirith Ungol. My mom (the one who’d read the trilogy to me) explained that while Shelob is in the two towers book, chronologically this was happening at the same time as events in return of the king. She also brought up the first movie, where Boromir’s death was included despite it technically being the first chapter (iirc) of two towers.
So how was it when you finally saw her in the third film?
@@endermanwithalowercasee Oh, I still freaked out 😁 Frodo going in alone made it worse. The scene was masterfully done, from the CGI to the music and sound effects. It’s still a pretty scary scene. Although I think I was more scared and startled when Gollum jumped Frodo after he escaped Shelob. “GOT AWAY DID IT, PRECIOUS???” Bit of a jump scare for little baby me 😅
As always a great video!
Fascinating Lore! Thank you!
When I first watched the Return of the King movie trailer and saw Shelob, my jaw dropped and I was amazed at how gross/ real she looked. I was also glad that, although, Shelob was in the Two Towers book, they didn't try and squeeze her in the second movie. Jackson did an amazing job with her in the Return of the King
Fantastic video as usual Yoystan!
7:31 "... for Ungoliant would've devoured the light, rather than be afraid of it." That's such a power move imagine Frodo holding up the Phial to defend himself and Sam only for her to frickin eat it.
That music...very, very eerie!
Amazing video yoystan
Last time I was this early, Ungoliant was still alive XD
Sadly spiders are unable to recover from injuries to their abdomen... they cant heal the break in their chitinous hull and slowly drain out.
Lovecraft + Lord of the Rings = Shelob.
Wait to hear from Ungoliant, the one that even made Melkor himself tremble in fear.
Another wonderful video. Thank you 🥰
This is very helpful. Thanks!!
Always enjoy your videos
You are a splendid narrator, Sir
/-a very compelling voice
I waited a whole week for this and was not disappointed :D
love shelob, good video
She survived because some spiders are gross like that, even if you step on them they keep going. Like you said in the video even after being partially blinded and stabbed in the middle she was still ready to kill Sam. Luckily he still had the light. I bet she will be something that Gondorian parents use to keep their kids in line for many more years to come. Fear the undying spider queen!
Last time I was this early, Imin was still looking for friends.
Shelob Schmelob.
Make a video on why Tar-Atanamir is the Witch-King.
Awesome 😎
I'm not afraid of spiders anymore when I see cockroaches.btw awesome video as always.
Whenever Sam does something, it puts a smile on my face😊.
Good show bravo! 👏🏻
I usually don't like spiders but when it's a vid on her I love it plus it's a men of the west video who couldn't love it
Thanks Jason, I really appreciate it buddy!
No prob! Thanks to you I've grown to love LOT keep up the great work and may good fortune bless you
A very extremely great video as always Men of the West. Also I agree with a theory that Ungoliant could be a Maiar herself.
Outstanding.
This is really cool, I am of course an arachnophobe so watching anything with spiders is hard, but she was an important part of the story! Thank you!!!
One of my favorite parts of the story, so many things come together in just a few pages.
The Valaquenta says that Manwe, when Varda is beside him, despite all darkness can see everywhere in Arda, and Varda, when with Manwe, can hear all that passes. So there is no doubt that Manwe knew where they were and that Varda heard Sam sing out for her protection.
Then Varda, Tintalle that she is, caused the Phial to blaze forth its brilliance, giving Sam a weapon --- the light of the Trees Ungoliant destroyed --- that enabled him to defeat Ungoliant's offspring Shelob.
Sam unknowingly saw this just a day or so earlier, realizing they were carrying some of the same light that Beren and Luthien rescued from Angband. A continuation of the same story.
Hay Yoysten, love the series, just curious if you are familiar with Games Workshops Lord of the Rings Tabletop game, there was a bit of interesting liberties taken with the copyright such as giving unique versions of the 8 other Ringwraiths apart from the Witch-King, having models for the Variags of Khand and some book only characters with models in the style of the Peter Jackson movies, for example Glorfindel and Gildor.
Yes Shelob!!!!! Hope you had a good weekend and rest of today I was wondering why would there be elves men just wondering around cirith ungol t o be eaten by her but as always stand men of the west
I like to think that she perished after this, meaning the world was even brighter after the fall of Sauron
Had not my master Sauron the Great wished to have her up in Cirith Ungol as a guardian, I would have had the revolting beast slayed long ago
Worthy topic
Good vid.
yoysten you are the MAN
I think I heard a story that Bilbo visited Erebor again in his last adventure during LoTR, if thats the case could you do a video about it? I cant find any sources to confirm this tale, but if I am wrong please correct me in the comments.
As I understand it, a deep puncture to a spider's abdomen is lethal. Shelob, being very "spider-like" , probably bled to death after Sam-Wise stabbed her with Sting,(the Elven dagger). The mystical nature of Sting, suggests that the wound that Shells suffered was even worse due to the "light" with which the Elves had forged it.
The same way Frodo's Morgul wound would never really heal, Shelob's wound would never heal since she was stabbed with an elvish blade. Frodo had the benefit of lord Elrond's healing hands so at least the damage done to him was lessened to a great extent; but for Shelob there would be no such healer. Its possible that with her weakened state and evil being finally cast out of Mordor forever, that she either died of the wound or starved to death.
Man so Shelob the spider is the Daughter of Ugoliath Probably a Maia of evil or darkness of course like Sauron just like his master just used the greater evil Spiders not to give them what they deserve amazing video as always 💓
I like how the video game Shadow of War asked the important question, “what if Shelob was *sexy*?”
I like to think that Shelob survived, but always had a deathly fear of hobbits thereafter.
My theory with beings like Ungoliant, Tom Bombadil, and Goldberry is that they are Maiar (or something similar) who kind of just chose not to follow the song of Eru. They were created, then were like "nah I'm good" and did their own thing. I think this is best exemplified by the fact that Tom Bombadil's appearance does not change when he puts the ring on. If the ring basically transforms you into your spectral/spirtual form (which is why you become invisible to most if you never beheld the light of the trees), Tom is just... Tom. A pure spirit, if you will. Ungoliant and Shelob are probably the same. Rogue angels, if you will. Some are good, some are bad.
edit: Goldberry, not Merrygold. My Witcher is creeping into my Middle-earth
They are the things unforetold and unsung that lie solely in the mind of Eru and he brings them into being himself, for his own ends.
I think Tom and Ungoliant specifically, are embodiments of the music itself. Tom of the main theme, and Ungoliant the discord
I like to think Shelob survived. With the downfall of Sauron and legends of how she got hurt, the region got less scary for adventurers who foolishly ventured too deep into her den and got eaten.
I liked the video
I like to think that Shelob died as her mother was rumored to. Devouring herself out of hunger, as she lay wounded and crippled in the dark.
I think you’re absolutely right his love made him just as much a great warrior as the times of old.
To be honest I don’t think Shelob died after the battle but I believe she was greatly hurt by the fight, so much so that it may well have been years before she was able enough to go hunting again. And considering the orcs were driven out of Mordor, and men (for the moment) were too afraid to live in Morgal vale, I believe it’s probable she slowly began to starve and become much weaker with lack of food. Maybe she would have to leave to find better hunting grounds or maybe she would just have to wither away away to the point where physically she would no longer be a danger to anyone, or maybe she did find food and slowly began to grow in strength again until the men have Gondor would one day drive her out.I don’t know.
Thank you.
I believe that she survived, initially, but she died later on because she was greatly weakened by her fight with Sam. So, eventually, she perished either from starvation or at the hands of some unknown foe whom she came across at a later time while in her weakened state. But that's how I like to view it, in a sort of way that doesn't diminish either Shelob's great threat, nor Sam's amazing feat in his battle with her.
In before Seth Miller says “I wish you had 8 arms so I could get a strong hug from you” or something like that
I love how spiders are used in Middle Earth.
How about doing a video about the great statues built during the ages.
I always found her very special...
Very much her own.
And JRRT seemed to portray her as such
Even if Shelob did survive... Losing to Sam probably wounded her ego for the rest of her days.
Thanks
We never go where she lives she eats all who go in cave the web can't be cut by my Berserker sword
Yes, we all DO have the power to face down great evils, and do amazing things, and reach great heights above our stature....all we need is confidence, a magic sword from the elves, and the light of a Silmaril!
Courage is definitely what gave Sam the strength to defeat Shelob. But KILL her? Eh...I doubt it. Not an evil that ancient. Sauron himself trusted her to guard his flank, and I don't think that would be a job he'd entrust to just anyone.
Like the bravery of Samwise Gamgee, Sting was powerful for it's size, but I think the truth is in it's name. Shelob may well have died, INDIRECTLY, as a result of her fight with Sam, but I always thought that she would likely have retreated to the darkness far underground. Both to escape the reach of Sting and Galadriel's phial, as well as tend her wounds as best she could. Feeding on whatever scraps she could find down there, it probably wouldn't have been enough to sustain her insatiable hunger for living things. Gradually wasting away in the darkness, she would most likely have starved to death. Which would be a poetic end for her.
Vile creatures like Shelob always feel incredibly hard to kill. It wouldn't have surprised me if he'd lived long enough we found Shelob survived.
She likely would have haunted the mountains hunting for orcs.
If Gondor eventually returned to Cirith Ungol to serve as a border post and she was still in the locality they would have to deal with her. Whether that be by destroying Shelob or driving her out of her lair and into Mordor proper we shall never know.
Using fire to drive her out makes most sense to me.
But wait! Don't you guys know that Shelob is actually a super sexy lady who only became a spider to survive after being betrayed by elfy Sauron?! *sarcasm heavy enough to concuss an oliphant*
Good vidio
What do you think of the Peter Jackson films version of the events in Shelob's cave? Obviously the exact details were a little different, such as the film having Gollum force Sam away before they enter the spider's lair. However, I do feel they did do a good job of portraying Sam's bravery and the horror one would get when facing a monster such as Shelob.
I do like to think that Shelob survived the aftermath of the Fall of Sauron. In itself she is not evil but just a regular spider, a regular animal. She has no plans to extent her domain but to have a steady source of food. As someone who carries all insects out of his flat alive I like to think that she is a symbol for live and let live.
You should feature Shelob in a future "Who Would Win?" video.
Shelob laid there dying, and would have passed from all knowledge, but for one man.
Stan Lee.
He said, "Look, there's a spider, man."
And the rest is history.
I cannot watch this video due to my arachnophobia. Regardless, AWESOME quality as usual my man!
Completely understandable, my friend! I was thinking about that when making this, and I completely understand. Cheers buddy!
Cirith Ungol, Torech Ungol. It makes clear that the Pass was known to be guarded by a child of Ungoliant, Whether or not she survived to the Fourth Age is not known, but I'm guessing that something remained in that pass.
an interesting video this is
I was very young when I watched the movies when they came out and I couldn’t even watch the Shelob scene, I’m not even scared of spider but Shelob was something else
