There was always something very poignant and heartbreaking to me about Elendil. Imagine having to witness the utter destruction of your entire nation of Numenor, knowing you could do nothing to stop a mad king's folly. Then, after years of attempting to rebuild the remaining Numenorean realms in Middle Earth, you must once again face the architect of your nation's downfall. Then, after years of battle and sacrifice, including one of your beloved sons, you yourself fall in battle against your arch-enemy, not knowing for sure whether or not you had defeated him. It is a true testament to the greatness and nobility that was Elendil the Tall, that he never faltered, never foreswore his oaths or turned his back on the world, but marched on, head high and sword ready...even beyond the gates of the Shadow and into final battle with the greatest evil of his Age. Truly an epic King among kings.
He is a very underrated character. Both him and his sons had close contact with Sauron in his fair form as well as his unfair form. In fact, they might be the only ones unless I'm forgetting someone. I can't imagine what it must have been like for them watching the king come home with Sauron and then falling directly into his evil plans. Numenor sounded like a horrific place for the last several years.
The greatest Númenórean of the Second Age. The forefather of the Kings and Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor. Faithful when most others were faithless. Personally led the fight against the Dark Lord and paid for it with his own life. I really wish Tolkien had written more about Elendil; definitely my favourite character in the entire legendarium. A gigantic figure in both stature and significance. Despite being such an understated character, he had a huge underlying influence on the mythos, especially the realms and heroes of Men, Aragorn in particular. You can feel his presence in the history and stories of the Men of the West. He truly embodies the nobility and gravitas Tolkien attaches in his tales to things and people of old. Brilliant video.
Elendil had quite a sad story, first seeing the Downfall of Númenor, then losing his father.... saving the remainder of his people and establishing his new kingdom in the North, and Gil Galad building the towers where he placed his own Palantírí to look for Númenor, losing his son Anarion then watching his friend Gil Galad get his faced burnt by the hands of my master Sauron in front of his face and then succumbing to my master's Blows dying next to Gil Galad's side......I am evil but that is real devotion right there :'). However I believe him to be a great role model for any person :D
I love to believe that tolkien made each character as an inspiration to everyone out there from the mightiest lords to the smallest hobbits, someone can relate to them and that is inspiring indeed.
Also at around the same age that Aragorn dies of old age, he buggers off and founds an entirely new kingdom before he dies 120 years laters. This really exggerates just how much the Numenoreans declined in exile.
It is good to see the tale of this Númenórean of great stature in both height and legacy. Even though Elendil’s name was tarnished by Isildur’s weakness for the power and evil of the One Ring, without him the fate of many would have been most dire during his rule, and after his passing into the Halls of Mandos.
In book isildur wasnt in with elrod in M Doom to distroy the ring , hi go from Minas Arnor to Rivendel to give the ring to Elrod and on the Road hi was killed.
Isildur was more skilled in stealth and travel, rather than in battle in the books. That is why he was the one more frequently traveling and negotiating while his brother fought battles and devised strategies. Isildur however, also justified means to an end, as he knows he's not a good fighter like his father and brother. The reason why Isildur died is because without the sun, the moon cannot shine, and the death of his brother crippled Isildur's heart as he gave in to the ring's temptation and died for it, failing at stealth and traveling, which was his specialty.
The Halls of Mandos are set aside for Elves. Men don't go to Mandos. They are not bound to the circles of the world, and their (our) fate is unknown. The Gift of Men became the Doom of Men, out of fear planted in human hearts by Morgoth Bauglir, fear of the unknown, because none have returned from death, save one, and that was by the Grace of Eru Iluvatar alone.
"But there were some who resisted....and on the slopes of Mt Doom they fought for the freedom of Middle Earth". I like to think of him as the carrier of hope, he went and made home after home until his last. He may not have been one of the greatest kings of all history but he definitely fulfilled a life's worth of honor and Valor. 👑

The fact that Elendil died at the age of 322 years old kinda shows that the Faithful Numenoreans or at least the Lords of Andunie had manage to evade the shortening of their lifespan before Eru sank Numenor. Now imagine if Elendil lived he would've ruled for 50-70+ more years and done much more for both Arnor and Gondor until his death.
Great video as always, Yoystan. I love the nautical aspect of the earlier ages. Also, I appreciate the humbleness to make corrections from earlier videos. Not that I would have caught it. I'm just a hobbit, it's easy for things to go over my head.
A great man and a great king! If he had not been prepared for the downfall of Numenor and ready to flee to Middle-Earth, there may have been no kingdoms of men to joint with Gil-Galad and the Elves to defeat Sauron.
Dang, Peter Jackson wasted an opportunity for a great action sequence. I would have loved to see Elendil and Gil-galad go mano-a-mano with Sauron. Such a shame that all film audiences get to see of the great king is of him getting maced into a cliff. Hopefully, Amazon remedies that. Still, at least we did get Aragorn's "Elendil!" cry at least once in the films. Thanks for the vid. Elendil's one of my favorite characters in the legendarium, too.

From the line of Melian the Maia comes challengers of Sauron, and Elendil, alongside his ancestor Thingol, challenged Maiar (Sauron, Boldog) to single combat, while being the tallest of their respective races (Thingol was taller than Elendil).
After reading more into his story, Elendil is my favorite character that Tolkien created. He was a great king and a great Warrior, arguably the greatest warrior the Dúnedain ever had, the only one that comes close to his deeds and valor in life and battle was Aragorn.
The great height this man reaches is no object in comparison to the heights of glory and goodness you reach. Your reach is far into the stars and into the heavens
Every time you mentioned Sauron manipulating the Numenoreans into doing human sacrifices to Morgoth, I immediately think of the Aztecs. But why would he do this form of evil treachery? What did he have to gain? Did he know the Valar would destroy them eventually and this just added to the fuel they needed, or was their a darker purpose? Did the sacrifices aid Morgoth in some way? I know, a lot of questions.
I really hope Amazon Prime's upcoming Second Age Middle Earth Series will end with the War of the Last Alliance and the duel of Gil Galad and Elendil against Sauron.
Correction: Tar-Elendil, the 4th king of Númenor, was the ancestor of Elendil. Elendil was a descendant of Silmariën, who was the daughter and oldest child of the king.
An epic character for sure... Wish the triolgy showed him and gilgalad fighting sauron... Grinds my gears when people think cutting his finger off beat sauron
Elendil's height is actually 7'10". He could've very well been almost as tall as Sauron himself, not just average size like he usually appears in pictures or the live action LOTR films.
I just thought of something. the dwarves in the first age and early second age were very active and actively take part in the affairs of middle earth but after the fall of Ost-in-Edhel suddenly they do nothing. they don't join the numenor in defeating sauron in the war of elves and sauron. when Gundabad their holy site is taken by orcs they don't try and reclaim it despite having the power to do so. When the orcs drive away their mannish allies who provide them with their food they do nothing and allow the orcs to drive the humans away and slowly starving the dwarves causing their numbers to dwindle. when the power of the orcs of the misty mountains increases and they begin to take the dwarven strongholds one by one moving southwards closer to Khazad-dum they do nothing and allow it to happen. The odds of a species like the dwarves to allow somebody to disgrace, steal and humilate them so is unlikely so why were they so paralyzed throughout most of the second and third age? I believe this is when sauron gave the dwarves their rings of power and while the rings couldn't control the dwarves it could influence their thoughts and actions which was why the dwarven kings did nothing as their realm collapsed around them.
Hmmm...Would Eru have sunk Numenor if it was the Faithful fleeing to the west for safety? Also, how shitty is it for Anarion to have been killed by a rock? Poor princeling didn't even get a good death...
I have reading proof, that Aragorn shouted "Elendil" as because Rereading it a great tool before you watch Lore Videos, Shows or Movies on the matter!!! Thanks Mellon, for Elendil's ECH, Until Anor's Spotlight...Marion Baggins Out!!! And Wait a mo, that is the epic poem Aragorn later sings...That is so cool!!!
Omg, i like this channels so much. This morning i was checking some of "history of the ages". And i wanted to view more but the channel has been cancelled just now. I cant view anything anymore :( hope this channel survives
Maybe this was brought to attention before else where, but I'd like to explore this what if regarding the line of Elendil. What if Elendil, Gil-galad perished according to the Fellowship of the Ring, but what if Isildur died in the siege of Barad-dur and Anarion survived and cut the ring from Sauron's hand? Would he have succeeded in resisting and destroying the one ring where his brother failed?
Could you please explain how a host of Numenoreans would be powerful enough to defeat Sauron while Sauron wore his One Ring? Were all the swords of the Numenoreans Enchanted like the blades of Westernesse from the Lord of the Rings story itself?
*Tolkien:* Elendil is a noble elf friend, wise warrior greatest of men, over 7 feet tall and hundreds of years old. *Rings of Power:* Elendil is a woke cis gender 5 foot 8 inch man of bumbling toxic masculinity
Please can we have a video about Annuminas? I have always wondered how Aragorn would rebuild the northern capital city, after Sauron was defeated. Lots of conjecture and discussion i suspect would rage over that one.
i always wondered rebuild it for who? There are no refugees or anyone left from the northern kingdom just a few hundred rangers living in the wilderness. Gondor is seeing a decline in population as is told in the books and they got minas tirith, minas ithil and osgiliath to repopulate before worrying about running out of space. The climate is also much more comfortable in gondor so why would anymore migrate north to a cold barren wasteland filled with ruins, trolls and hobbits?
@@origami83 Same things went through my mind too. Hence why a video about it would be interesting. Without the minions of Sauron rebuilding and repopulating would have become more viable than in the recent past. So rather than merely poo pooing the concept I would rather look forward with hope and resilience. Man is ever resourceful and under Aragorn I wish to believe that progress was made.

I can't help but thinking of the Great Armament in the context of "Storm Valinor; They Can't Stop All Of Us"
To about the same effect, too
can you do a video about the crown of Gondor please?
Elendil Voronwe. Elendil the Faithful. All that needs to be said of him.
Elendil: the original King in da Norf
This made me laugh :D
An epic character for sure...
Wish the triolgy showed him and gilgalad fighting sauron... Grinds my gears when people think cutting his finger off beat sauron
High King Elendil was, in my opinion, the most breathtaking (read: thirst trap) of the men of Westernese 😍.
Awesome.
Elendil's height is actually 7'10". He could've very well been almost as tall as Sauron himself, not just average size like he usually appears in pictures or the live action LOTR films.
So Elendil was at least 7 ft tall, a high king indeed...
*Ba dum tss*
Or he got the special pipe weed. 😉
I thought he was closer to 8 ft tall? I'm sure I'm wrong. I love Elendil . A mighty brave king.
You are correct. 7' 11".
What if Utumno was rebuilt in the first age? How would the war of the jewels and the war of wrath have played out?
Maybe this was brought to attention before else where, but I'd like to explore this what if regarding the line of Elendil. What if Elendil, Gil-galad perished according to the Fellowship of the Ring, but what if Isildur died in the siege of Barad-dur and Anarion survived and cut the ring from Sauron's hand? Would he have succeeded in resisting and destroying the one ring where his brother failed?
Damn this video is good
So how tall was he---oh 7 feet 😆 Nevermind. I just finished typing he and you answered my question.
Gilgalad is the most bad*as of the elves
Hello there
General Kenobi
AGENT WASHINGTON! You are a bold one...
@@MenoftheWest thank you for keeping this channel going
Lovely.
"Behold the sword of Elendil!"
His Entish name, "That slightly less puny guy" is not as well known.
Could you please explain how a host of Numenoreans would be powerful enough to defeat Sauron while Sauron wore his One Ring? Were all the swords of the Numenoreans Enchanted like the blades of Westernesse from the Lord of the Rings story itself?
Possible. But the text says Sauron was being crafty by using diplomacy while preserving his forces for later.
I am also high and tall.
