Anais Mitchell: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
HTML-код

- Her voice is soft and sweet, her guitar work deft and evocative, but Anaïs Mitchell is a songwriting storyteller first and foremost. Robbed of a gift for melody and poetry, Mitchell would probably (and may yet) write some tremendous novels. Her ambitious recent discography bears out that notion: The 2010 album version of her star-packed folk opera Hadestown recasts Greek legend in America, while this year's Young Man in America turns her thoughts to the pitfalls of modern life, inspired in part by the works of Mitchell's writer father.
Thankfully, as this Tiny Desk Concert in the NPR Music offices demonstrates, Mitchell possesses a warm and ingratiating style to go with her evocative, impeccably crafted lyrics. Singing and playing alongside guitarist and longtime collaborator Michael Chorney, she performs three of Young Man in America's most bracingly beautiful songs with clear-eyed directness that requires no adornment. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

I’d like like to thank Hadestown for introducing me to a very fantastic musician
Look up the outtakes with Dusty Wright. :D
I'll sign that
Hmm.
It's crazy cause now I think I like her music even more than Hadestown, it's so weird 😂😂
So you thank Anaïs Mitchell for introducing herself 💗
This woman is the real deal and what being singer/songwriter is all about for me. I saw her live about a year ago. She sang a song for my soon to be wife and me, talked to us after the show, and we got a picture with her. Each song is a beautiful piece of poetry with her own style of playing. The genuine article, she is.
The story in her first song is from her father, Don Mitchell's fable "The Souls of Lambs".
With all the crap and insanity of this world---it is wonderful that there are people like those featured here on NPR's Tiny Desk Music mini concerts, people who are making simple, elegant, gorgeous and heart felt music. It does give one hope for this crazy world and our species that we have people making this sort of REAL MUSIC.
I wish I could like this comment 1,000 times.
Very hopeful and inspiring.
Hearing Hadestown and Anais Mitchell for the first time today. Mind blown.
I hope, in the future, history puts this amazing songwriter on the list of BEST folks musicians of all times.
She deserves not only a Tony, but a Grammy and Nobel, and all the praises in the world.
Thank you, Anaïs. Thank you for inspiring us with your music, for sharing your art.
She's a freaking goddess. She has the genius flowing through her. 🙌🏽🌊✨
Didn't the Hadestown album also win a Grammy last year?
“All music is folk music. I ain't never heard a horse sing a song.”
― Louis Armstrong
that first song is a goddamn masterpiece.
I mean... That can be said of many of her songs. 🙏🏽✨ Have you been heard Hadestown yet? The whole album? 🙌🏽
Something about that first song makes me ball my eyes out. Even before the end, something about how beautiful and delicate her voice is, combined with the pure Americana of the words she is singing. Just pure crystalized beauty. Brings tears to my eyes.
I've seen her perform it several times - the first time was in a space the size of a living room and I was three feet from her. It still chokes me up every time. Timeless beauty.
Same. It pulls my heart strings every time. Truly magical.
I'm lucky enough to have been blessed by Anais' presence multiple times when running sound for a small club in Austin many years ago. Talent like hers makes one glad to be alive and fortunate enough to witness it.
Wow, Young Man In America was over 10 years ago. This performance is stunning.
This just never gets old. I've watched 50 times at least.
Those are rookie numbers you had better work on them. :)
Vermont's gift to the world. I just love this girl. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear her sing.
Michael Chorney has been around Vermont's music scene for quite a while. Viperhouse was briilliant, too bad it was relatively short-lived.
Heard a quiet little voice singing about a shepherd in the background of a Twitch stream earlier today and now here I am. Feel a need and a desire to hear everything that this special soul has recorded now. That don't happen very often.
Check out the musical she wrote called Hadestown. Hands down, the best theater experience I have EVER had.
This is one of my favorite tiny desk concerts. She seems so humble (aka normal) and nice. Her writing is amazing, and she is really playing that guitar.
I wrote a bachelor thesis on the tiny desk concerts. If I could give it a soundtrack, it would be this song playing in my headphones while I'm hanging fresh laundry, at midnight in the summer
Thanks Bob, thanks Tiny Desk, and NPR
This lady just won a lifelong fan.
Duo. I'm joining you.
สวัสดีครับ
I introduced a friend to her music , he was hooked , he has dissapeared , last seen 3 years ago 😞
Coming back to this after having just watched the Hadestown Tiny Desk Concert fills me with so much joy and also makes me want to ball my eyes out.
That's exactly why I'm here too.
Anais is a fabulously talented artist. I saw her at Paradiso in Amsterdam and it was one of the best live performances I've ever seen -- in more than four decades of concert-going.
So beautiful. Sitting here with tears in ym eyes. Thank goodness for the songsters and story-tellers of this world. They save more lives than they will ever know. x
There's something about the NPR Tiny Desk Concerts that allow musical artists to emote the depths, inner workings, and messages of their songs in a way that no other recording could capture. Every time I listen to someone whose words have the power to evoke a naivety of all that is good in the world, it is because I first heard them here, on NPR.
I'm so glad I got Young Man in America from a sample pack of albums in my then-local record store. It's one of my favorite albums ever.
i’ve returned to this tiny desk more than any other of the many, many i’ve seen. it speaks to me as much today as the first time i saw it. truly inspiring.
Still the best thing on the interweb today - 10 years after. She is so sweet it makes my teeth ache
The farewell little speech: "Thanks so much for lending us your ears..." What humility for such a legend. Sent here from other place, I am sure, as few people in these comments noticed. Also - have you noticed the comments? Restored my faith in humanity.
I understand what you were trying to say, but 'humility' wasn't the word you were looking for...
Came back 4 years later... Still gives me chills. Amazing.
come back. its been 4 years
@@oliviarachel05 Your comment brought me back. Listening right now. Goosebumps still. Thanks so much.
What a lovely singer/songwriter/guitarist/storyteller/warm human being . She is charmingly humble as she is talented . This was my first view and I will follow her career . She and Michael played beautifully together . This concert was truly a gift to all who see it. George Lewis, Sr
Utter. Perfection. Her songwriting, voice, and performances are among the best in the world.
This performance is just other - worldly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To this day this is one of the most beautiful performances of music/storytelling that I've witnessed. Thank you Anais & NPR.
Still the best performance on NPR.
The Hadestown performance is pretty nice, too.
Being a woman myself, its so nice to see another woman getting recognition for her TALENT on an instrument. She plays very well, and her lyrics are very intricate!
I like listening to this whenever theres a storm, it makes me feel less afraid
My longest running bucket lister. I LOVE LOVE LOVE HER! I need to see a Live Concert of hers. Pretty Please
Anais Mitchell is very skilled both as a guitarist and a poet.
This woman just blows my doors off! If she were a man writing these songs, she'd BE hailed as THE HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DYLAN. Hope she has all the success she wants and deserves. Tell a friend . . . .
You'd also love Monica Heldal
I'm telling EVERY friend Kasandra. Love the songs on Young Man in America. Tailor is brilliant too.
Bullseye, Kasandra. Perfectly stated, and so poignantly true.
No one is heir to Dylan. He is immortal. She gets her own, equally special throne, but no one de-crowns the Jester. (:
@@littlelamb2112 Nah, Anais is better than Dylan ever was even on a good day. Plenty of other people are too.
what a find...wow. Brilliant lyrics, and musically enchanting...a true gem.
I just watch u for the fist time on Saturday morning news. Wow. Another long standing musician that the main media and now social media has opened up to me. I hope to see u live ine day....your new faithful fan....Robert zeligson. Thanks for having the courage to do what u do!
I'm in awe... Young Man In America is truly magnificent !!!
My god, this is the first time I've heard of her. First song in and I'm in love with her sound and storytelling. Amazing.
Last night I was listening to my local radio channel that sometimes streams NPR, and there was a live recording of Anaïs Mitchell singing Al Helwa Di. Immediately, I was captivated. What a wonderful sound to find!
No words can describe his. It is fabulous beyond measure.
Fantastic lyrics and a sweet, chilling voice ... really enjoyable to listen to. Come to lreland.
THis first song breaks my heart each time I ear Anais singing it. She's such a huge talent and a wonderful songwriter
For sure one of the most touching voices I've ever listened.
her voice calms me so much... there’s just something about it that’s so soothing
Getting psyched up to go see her again. This time at the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH.
I don't care what she sings. Her songwriting and storytelling skills are awsome.
These three choice songs from "Young Man" are fine examples.
I was impressed at Langdon Stree Cafe. Still listening intently 8 years later.
Had the pleasure to hearing Anais open for Milk Carton Kids in Toronto. What an amazing singer/ song writer & poet!! Can't wait to pick up her albums.
I was there too! Great night overall. MCK were hilarious.
+Kyle Gauvin Saw them in Ann Arbor last night. She was fabulous
I watched her open up for them last night in Chicago. An absolute pleasure. She sounds even better in person.
+Philbow55 I was at the Ann Arbor show too! I now own 4 Anais Mitchell albums. She is just phenomenal. Young Man in America is one of the most beautiful albums I've heard.
+Ashley Denomme it was such a good show! I really like the Clyde Waters song from one of her other albums as well. I really wish she'd recorded her Bob Dylan cover on one of those albums.
A very moving song, which was sung by a beautiful voice.
I came because of Hadestown but when the video started, I recognised the Shepard... I used to listen to it when I was younger, and its a song flooded with so much emotion already so plus the nostalgia...
Folk music that sounds like folk music, glad there are still people making it.
Anais was opening for Josh Ritter in Amsterdam in 2017. I never heard of her but she blew me away with her songs. Amazing :-)
My god, wish when I found artists like this that I automatically knew all of their songs that I liked. Add Anais to the list of artists I need to explore more. For now Add to: Playlist.
*****
dude, there is literally more music available than you can possibly listen to.
***** Tosh!! You've fallen into the age old trap of thinking you can define art, no one can, it's totally subjective. If that's what you look for in music then fine, but that's just your opinion. Music affects and touches people in as many ways as there are people to hear it. peace.
What?! You need to "automatically know all of the her songs that you like"? Get a grip. You can't have it all at once. You got Modern Life Disease. Don't over-complicate. All her records are great. Buy them or go to Spotify and listen to them.
if she sang back in the 60's/70's she would have been huuuuuuuge
She´s gonna be yet. No worries .)
@@jakubotevrel5058 Good news!
One of my favorites still, Wish she would release the songs like this
I loved watching this so much. Anaïs Mitchell is truly so talented in her music and songwriting. ❤🎵😍🎶
Beautiful lady and beautiful song. She's playing an old Kalamazoo guitar made by Gibson of Kalamazoo, MI (then) for the department store trade. Such an earthy and unique sound. Love it.
Morris Starkey So inspired by her wonderful misic ... I searched and bought a KG-11 myself! What an amazing sounding and playing instrument ... 80 years sure adds some beautiful tone to a guitar! Cheers!
George Glen They sure do. I have a couple I picked up before I even knew that much about them. I just liked the sound and knew they were a notch above the average guitar for that trade.
Morris Starkey cheers Morris!
+Morris Starkey My dad played an old Kalamazoo double F-hole archtop acoustic. I still have it. He was self taught. The top is cracked, but it has such a unique mellow voice. It reminds me of the rare times when he wasn't working himself to death for family. I miss him a lot.
+Alan Kumashiro Such a sweet memory. Cherish it. I have an old Kalamazoo. I was inspired by Anias to get it out, clean it up and play it for a while. My old fingers, accustomed to my other guitars and a softer fretting, stumbled a little, but the sound is...sweet.
the guitar work on these songs is gorgeous...
I've heard this probably ten times the past week, SO DARN GOOOOOD!
"Hymns for the Exiled" and "The Brightness" are both brilliant albums.
I've listened to her music for almost 2 years now, but this is the first time I've watched her perform. I've gotta say, I think I'm in love !
I saw her live last night. SHe opened for The Punch Brothers. She was absolutely amazing. And yes she is as beautiful as her voice is . :)
her sound just fills up a room, so warm and pleasant. wow i love her
Lovely heart flowing voice. Beautiful Songs
Terrific artist,composer,poet,and playwright.....in my opinion!!
Saw anais last year in Sheffield and was blown away by her tender gift for song...a truly amazing performer.I can't wait to see her in Nottingham next week!
One of the best musicians alive today. Respected by so many awesome artists. She’s part of Bonnylight Horseman another awesome band.
I heard a cut from her "childs ballads" release that is due in March, "Sir Patrick Spens" while traveling through the Boston area. What a beautiful, haunting piece. I had to FDA a google search and finally found who the artist was. Here she is. I' can't wait for the release.
This tiny desk and lots of anais' work give me the frissons and remind me time and again how devastating, hopeful, and beautiful existence can be. grateful to be here.
My first time hearing Anais. She definitely draws you in with her storytelling. Wow.
Such talent! Her voice is wonderfully light. Thank you NPR for introducing me to this wonderful diamond!
This is beautiful beyond description.
A truly gifted songstress whose tender lyrics are beautifully sung.❤🩹
Her songs are from a different age, wonderful!
feel so grateful that this AWESOME performance was recorded and shared, love every moment of her songs, deep, chilling, beautiful soul food thank you,

Amazingly beautiful
The sound belies the years and the torments of life. Touch the heat; touch the heart.

I love this music and these lyrics and this voice...
I love this woman so much
somrday i might be able to listen to this without tears

Just found her now, amazing!
This literally so incredible
The Willy o the Winsbury duet is to die for! congratulations. As well as the Riddle Song. Thanks, Doug Day, Director, Sweet Chariot Music Festival
one of my favourite tiny desks of allllll time
I cried watching this.
Beautiful music! Thanks NPR.
so glad i found this, its beautiful
the shepherd made me cry
Many of her songs have made me cry.
A lovely performance. Not sure if it is only because I found this music in this form but I think Young Man In America is much better in an acoustic format. It captures the soul of exactly that, a young man in America. Thanks for the lovely stories
What a good story should evoke. Bless this voice sent from another place.
Just beautiful, she's an amazing songwriter :)
To me, Anais' music is always beautiful, always spiritual.
The first song is so gorgeous. It haunts you and also makes you hate it.
Love anais!! She stands apart. 🌼🌼
Incredible lyrics and entrancing voice from both her and her instrument!
great job on the sound and the film. great stuff. really!
"And the shepherd's work is never done..." hits home with those of us that work the dirt and tend to our herds. Life may hit us hard, but our work is never done...
Shrek ... I took it to mean that he killed himself with the cleaver. That's why his work was never done.
That's what I was thinking!
@@krisptaco I am pretty certain that that isn't what it meant.
That's not as sad nor as meaningful as what the literal interpretation and the general implication of him living on are.
@@krisptaco There's a sort of storied history to the lives of farmers and how they're romanticised. The idea is that they're building something to provide for their family that they can pass on to their children. His work will never be done because the end goal of his work no longer exists.
That was my interpretation too@@CalmBlue. His work was his family. His whole purpose. I'm not too proud to say I get a certain degree of 'wet eye' each time I hear this song.
