I'm 60 and in the winter arthritis kills me on cold nights. So in the morning I sit in the sun on the front porch, listening to this and other recordings by them, having a cup of coffee, or a very hot tea to help warm me up inside. Those mornings became unforgettable for me.

Nice. And even a brand new violin or fiddle is typically antiqued (relicing is the guitar term) during finish stages. People expect it to look like it's old. These young artists are creating music and lyrics that feel centuries old, a beautiful feeling. Surely they have old souls, as they say.

When too energies form to Collide create, a sound that not many can grasp, a band like this, is a direction of hope; hope that happiness still exists, and bring a wave of pause in time, where people can be at peace. And be as One together as one force, threw history and present. To use the heart and bring there minds threw there trials and tribulations. The mind sees many aruas with this band, because if you sat down and talk with these folks and grasped their experiences it is good for food for thought. Great guitarist. My hats go off too you.

The interviewer's slightly nervous awkward personal style and limited "Californian Surfer" like vocabulary is a bit annoying in comparison to the polished, worldly, relaxed and authentic players. Yet, the interviewer's disarming and overly enthusiastic goofiness seems to have the effect of drawing Mandolin Orange in to "rescue him" a bit and save a great recording and performance... I found myself cringing when watching for the first time but it's not nearly as bad when just listening for the 2nd time... His transitions from awkward, but an informative, interview to asking for the next song could use some refining. He should watch and learn from the Master- Cheryl Waters @ KEXP/NPR!!

The interviewer is stumbling through his job, but this is really common. I've done like 2-3 interviews I've been happy with my 24 year artistic career and the rest seemed like the journalist didn't prepare at all. It's usually fine, and rarely does it completely kill what the subject has to say. Despite the awkward bluntness, I still took away some shavings of knowledge about a band I admire. Not everyone is Terry Gross. With rare exception, an interesting subject naturally takes a basic question and draws it into something that the listener finds interesting, because their specialty/career is a huge part of their life and they care about it deeply. The worst is when the interviewer feels like their job is to maintain bullet points that you could answer in one word, and doesn't allow you to follow a tangent or anecdote, which is usually where the gold is waiting to be mined. Terry Gross is a master of extracting information tangentally. She preps with basic knowledge on her subject, and allows simple questions to grow into pearls of wisdom organically. She asks a basic leading question and then strikes the motherlode through organically allowing her subject to grow comfortable, maintaining a conversational cadence and allowing them to express themselves freely. Sean Evans is also great at this method, albeit speeding up the process through ritualized pain. His method is actually brilliant, but wouldn't work if he wasn't also a great journalist.

These two wonderful musicians don't just play notes, they play music and sing songs from down deep..., with such synchronicity .

Good music is always the collaboration - with instrument, with fellow musicians, and the invisible technicians securing the transport of sound for larger reach; and HERE that job is really well done - they managed to make themselves just that: unnoticed. I noticed. 🙂

I think the interviewer would be a great guy to get lunch with, just ask you these really interesting questions and tell you about himself in very unique ways. Good guy I always like the shows he hosts.

Railroads Across Maine maybe they were hoping for something tasteless , hollow and common and when they heard this they had no ability to appreciate it and instead of listening they hit dislike and went to find what they were accustomed to. That's just a theory .

I really can't understand why anyone ever feels the need to click on 'dislike' for any music. I think that it is probably a panic response upon encountering the unfamiliar or challenging.

Maybe the Audiotree host is a good dude but he comes across in this session as a complete doof. Despite that, this set is so good because of Mandolin Orange's musicianship and vocals so I keep coming back to it.

Emily and Andrew, you're young. As time goes by and all the pieces of life fit together in your lives, you will experience the deeply spiritual feeling and meaningful awareness of the spirituals and hymns. They are part of America's great roots music tradition, and they've contributed to its greatness.
