I’m not the only one to think or express this, but Mache Dich is the most transcendently beautiful section in the most sublime long work of Western Music, quite possibly of all art. Only Michelangelo’s “Moses” for the tomb of Pope Julius, Pericles Funeral Oration and the Parthenon Marbles share company with Bach’s Matthau-Passion.

World go out, let Jesus in.

(still me, sorry. just to say I've just heard a most beautiful Dieskau's version also under Karl Richter, probably from the 1950s or 60s. only now I realize the main difference to my ears & sensibility is that Berry is a bass whose voice plainly enchants me. Dieskau, here especially, also enchants me but very very differently, being a baritone but more than that.)

This is a stunning interpretation of this piece. I find it impossible not to be moved by the swelling phrases that speak of both joy and sorrow... It is outstanding.
I am currently working on this piece as well, and I would also like to comment on the commenters who said that they are not ready for this peace because they are tenors or high baritones. I say SING WHAT GIVES YOU JOY! There are no limitations to what is possible if you have confidence! =)

I was transfixed from the very first note ... Thank you so much for shaing. If - after listening to this one doubts Bach's love of God I'm afraid "American Idol" has won

    Matthäus-Passion - BWV 244:
    Aria - Bass
    Mache dich, mein Herze, rein,
    Ich will Jesum selbst begraben.
Denn er soll nunmehr in mir
    Für und für
    Seine süBe Ruhe haben.
Welt, geh aus, laB Jesum ein!

If your computer keyboard does not have the letter "ß", you can produce it by holding down the "Alt" key and then typing the number 0223 on the right hand side Numpad. (At least on a Windows PC. -- Not sure about Linux and Mac.)
But the letter "capital B" is a completely different letter (and sound) than the letter "ß" in the German language… :-) ("ß" is pronounced like the English "s", while the German "s" sounds more like an English "z". And the German "z" would be equivalent to an English "ts"... Like in Tsunami.)

Tornado Sam thank you so much for this! You have no idea how insanely timely your translation/response is for me. Has to be a Holy Spirit thing! I am working very hard on this right now: Create in me a clean heart o God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51. God bless you, Sam, and thanks again.

I heard about this because a guy called Bach composed something called "St. Matthew's passion" and this song is in it. They play it every year at churches in my city, where I go listen to it every year. :P
