    Omg I am so grateful that I am a Chinese in Malaysia, so I know Chinese well. Guys, I really think that if u dunno chinese at all, u should go and study the basic characters in chinese like 人 (person, human) ,食 (food, eat) ,生 (life, live). I found that the more hanja characters you know, the easier for you to enrich your korean vocab. If u know other dialects in Chinese (Hokkien, Cantonese...) these will definitely help too (in terms of listening) ! So, dun feel intimidated by the hanja characters, the basic ones are quite easy to learn and memorize, so everyone, keep it up !!!

      Same here I struggled with learning Korean vocab before learning Chinese including radicals of course. Now it's much easier to find the hanja equivalents. As a visionary learner these vocab connections are so important.
      Also the morphology (make up of the words) logically can be see more when you know a Chinese origin dialect/language. Like for example I haven't studied Chinese in a while but in Chinese you get a big word for example like "heart-attack" and instead of the English meaning where your heart is being attacked it will be like too-fast-heart-beat or something (doubt this is the case) but Korean has some origin words that work like that with both native roots and sino roots.

      You'll only see hanja actually being used in some newspapers and other formal resources. However, hanja can be useful to learn as a lot of Korean words are derived from Chinese characters. I don't think it's a priority though, and often just being aware of this can help - if you see lots of words that are similar in meaning (like with the 인 example, 인간, 노인, 인생, etc.) then you can often deduce the meaning of that character.

    I acquired the book last year but was overwhelmed by the content and thought maybe I don’t need it. However, I would keep getting stuck on words wondering why they are written or used a certain way, then wouldn’t remember them. Learning Hanja gives your mind something to associate each word with and so it becomes easier to remember, recognize and understand when used in different contexts. The video helped me overcome the sudden stress produced by the thought, “Why am I learning Chinese to learn Korean?” I will try it again knowing that it will have great value in my learning journey. Is Hanja one syllable per character and one sound per character with some having just 2 or 3 like in Chinese, or do characters usually have like 4-7 like some Japanese Kanji?

    • @firstnamelastname6071

      The former.

    • @faustinuskaryadi6610
      @faustinuskaryadi6610 Год назад +1

      Because Japanese use Kanji also for polysyllabic native Japanese words aka Yamato Kotoba, while Korean use Hanja only for monosyllabic Chinese loanwords.

    HAHAHA... many of these Hanja-based words in Korean are also used in modern written Chinese. My speculation is that, in the early modern era or maybe the fall of the imperial era in East Asia, the use of Classical Chinese was very widespread. In fact, the Japanese continued to write in Classical Chinese up until the mid-20th century, when they started to go completely vernacular. While ancient Classical Chinese was strictly monosyllabic, more recent Classical Chinese included disyllabic/multisyllabic words, and these words and the widespread use of Classical Chinese may explain the permeation into the regional vernaculars.

    • @doujinflip
      @doujinflip 3 года назад +2

      Yes, person 인 is 人 (rén), while knowledge 인 is 認 (rèn). Korean (and Japanese) dropped the tone differences from their Chinese origins, so they become homophones that you'll have to figure out more from context.

    • @josueetcom
      @josueetcom 3 года назад +3

      It's helpful for building up vocab. Though no need to study it aggressively. If you notice the same syllable used in multiple related words though, that might indicate that the Hanja character is the same so learning it might help with other related words! E.g. 학교 and 학생 both have 학 and have to do with education/learning/studying so you might guess the Hanja characters are the same (they are) and then when you see 학 in new words try to use that to figure out its meaning. E.g. 언어학 = language + study?? (Yep! It's linguistics!)

    I know Japanese, so I know many Chinese characters, but if Korean doesn't use those characters in texts I really don't see the use in learning the Korean readings. It really does feel like a waste of time when you're a beginner or intermediate student. At least that's what I feel

      Actually, that’s exactly how it worked for the Korean writing system before the ‘80s, mixing Hangul and Hanja, kinda like the Japanese writing system. For example, “실업자가 계속 늘어나서 정부는 대책을 마련하고 있다” would be written as “失業者가 繼續 늘어나서 政府는 對策을 磨鍊하고 있다” back in the old days

      Yes, because Chinese characters are pronounced in four tones and we Chinese people use different writing ways to individual them. But when they were spread to Korean. The tones and writing are lost. Especially now. We can seldom see a Chinese characters in Korean daily life.
