I realise a lot of these will come naturally to you if you listen to a lot of Korean through talk shows and dramas. Your ear gets trained and you can tell when its wrong instinctively because you've heard it being said so many times!
Yeah, I actually didn't even know a couple of those words, but I still intuitively knew how they would probably be pronounced without specific tuition, so we don't intellectually need to know those rules. But just from home practice and listening, they're kind of obvious if you try to pronounce the spelt sounds. I got them all at pause. :-)
For anyone struggling with double consonants, what helped me was tensing my throat before "pushing" the sound out from the very back of my throat. When you do this you'll naturally raise the pitch and push out very little air.
Double consonants are a little more easy for me, because I speak Spanish and they are similar to Spanish consonants, English consonants are pronounced while exhaling some air at the same time you say them, Spanish - and Korean double consonants - are pronounced with no air!! You can try putting a paper sheet in front of your mouth and pronouncing the consonants like in English and then trying pronouncing them with no air! You'll notice how the sheet moves with the air of English consonants and not moving with Korean double consonants - or Spanish ones - I hope you understand my explanation, and find it helpful!!😅
This is why I love TTMIK, they understand that simple doesn't rhyme with least They always come up with simpler methods to learn and they're actually most efficient I always learn so much from them when I'm not being lazy😶
This explanation is super clear. When learning a language, connective speech is one of the most treacky aspect to grasp. You hear a sound that does not match what you write. It is not only a matter of sounding native, but also a very important listening skill. Through studying Korean with you I was able to improve my English by paying more attention of the sounds we produce while speaking. Amazing work guys, keep it up.
I always thought that when I'd hear people say 같이 that it'd often sound like they were saying 가치 but I thought that my ears were just deceiving me and that, as a learner, it wasn't my place to stray from what I had learned from ny books and thus I just resorted to putting a lot more emphasis on the ㅌ. Happy to find out that my observations and suspicions were indeed correct all this time
ive been learning for years, but with ttmik, i realize there is always more to learn!! id noticed differences in how words were pronounced vs written, but i didnt know that some of these were actual rules instead of people just talking fast. thank u!! i sounded way more natural saying the sentence after i watched the video
That was terrifying but equally helpful. Reading the theory at the beginning of my TTMIK textbook, I didn't really grasp these ideas. This was more helpful.
This lesson not only helped me pronounce better but 'listen and understand' better, proving once again that memorizing vocabulary isn't enough. A learner must also detect nuances in the language. It has helped me pay attention to how actors speak in Kdramas.
My mom was born and raised in Korea (she only left as an adult) but she actually says 한국말 as 한국말 and not 한궁말 😅 when I asked her about it, she just said y’know everyone pronounces things differently (I.e. has their own way of pronouncing things), and it’s true no matter the language when you think about it. There are so many ways to pronounce things. I always thought Korean was different though since there are so many rules how to blend consonants together and such, but I guess not. Anyways, tldr don’t feel bad if you mispronounce some things sometimes because even some Koreans don’t.
I was having difficulties pronouncing long sentences and was about to search for how to read fluently and correctly but this video came up on my homepage and it helped me a lot.
If I can I just want to say I’m so proud of myself because I read the majority of this sentence correctly. I still need more practice of course but after studying Korean every day for a year and a half this makes me so happy! I will continue to practice and study everyday!
this was seriously the most helpful video i’ve ever watched regarding learning korean. this answered every question i’ve had for so long about why korean is pronounced differently from how it’s written sometimes. weird they don’t seem to immediately teach this in text books nor the korean language school i attended. this should be something taught first
Oh. My. God. And I thought I was done learning all the rules in 한글 ! I never knew about these rules.. if I never watched this video, I wouldnt have known any of these 😭 Thanks so much! This was so informative, and the way u broke everything down is incredible. U made everything so clear and easy to understand. This video was very informative. I'm currently self teaching myself Korean and trying to do my best. It's been about 2 months or so since I started learning. I keep wanna thanking you ㅋㅋㅋ Anyways, thanks so much for this once again! 💜
This was incredibly helpful! While I don't have any problems pronouncing 의, I just wanted to know why it becomes "ye" in possessive form; like 나의 (na-ye), 우리의 (uri-ye) and the rest. Thank you!! 🤗🤗
Well, you don't actually have to know why it has to be. Cuz Koreans still don't really know about it either. language is not mathematics. :) if you are interested in learning Korean language and culture, you can come and check my channel too i guess.
This kind of video is good yes. I'm also offering some videos such like this too from my channel. If you like learning Korean language and also culture, you can check it out from my channel too :)
Thank you so much for that video. It's really helpful. I realized that after you listen to a lot Korean speaking, you can hear the difference in double consonants or theㄱ+ㄴ,ㅁ=ㅇ rule.... Those lessons are really interesting☺️
Wow, this is a good one, it answered a lot of the questions I had before when I ran into some of the words during learn Korean videos and from kdrama. I'll have to repeat this many many times to absorb this lesson. Thanks !
Clear explanation! Thank you so much! I would like to suggest that the proportion of the speaker's image can be larger so that we can see much clearer the shape of the mouth.
This is really helpful. I always wondered about 한국말 and why it sounds different from natives. The other pronunciation points were also very useful. Thank you so much
This is why watching Korean videos like variety shows and dramas are so great to learn Korean because I have never studied Korean but I pronounced the sentence perfectly, it's like second nature to me.
Woow this is very helpful, even though I know some of them but your way explained it is very clear and stick to my mind. Please do more of this series ❤
Eerie timing on this recommendation, RUclips. This really helped. I figured I was probably saying a lot of thing incorrectly. Interesting to see how middle ground I was. The stuff I got wrong was very VERY wrong. I'll visit this video often. Thank you.
Honestly I really try but I can't read this. After trying to learn korean I can do it . This is possible with this RUclips channel thanks you soo much .
I'm so glad I found this brilliant channel 😊 And particularly this video - it's so helpful! As someone just starting my learning adventure, and having a strong Scottish accent (!) I'm finding correct pronunciation tricky! Thanks for such a brilliant teaching tool - you're inspiring me! 🌟
whoa...this video and example sentence are awesome! i struggle a lot in my speaking and pronunciation so reading this sentence really challenged me! i did surprise myself when i recognized some of these rules without even realizing it ^^ more listening and speaking practice for me! thank you! :)

intermediate learner here, two things i wish yall mentioned is how ㅅ,ㅈ,ㅎ,ㅌ,ㅊ are all pronounced as ㄷ at the end of a syllable and how aspirated consonants and double consonants are pronounced as plain consonants in the 받침 position
