Great teacher - great song ! I saw John play this in 1981 at Torquay Town Hall and can't believe that 43 years later I can too now thanks this brilliant lesson!
The more I watch your videos the more I think that your channel should receive a grant from the unesco: you are doing an excellent job in keeping alive great music that, generally speaking, does not receive the attention it deserves.
I've always done the solo bit differently......yours is right. I've been a fan since 78. The music was groundbreaking, creative, innovative. It was amazing to hear the new music he was pioneering in those days.
If you watch Mcgeoch playing it live on this song, he switches the flanger off when he does the D to E barre chord bit. Then in the chorus, he switches it on and off to accent the high notes ,quite some tap dancing to perform live!
great performance! I bought the record back in the day but to see the guitar parts performed like this really raises awareness of how excellent the guitarist was.
More Banshees? Why not indeed Mr Woodward. Thanks so much for this Adrian. I have set to work on this and the recent Arabian Knights offering. Challenging. rewarding, educational and fun all at once. What better excuse to wheel out that McGeoch tribute guitar once more.
Flanger (like chorus) is just a very short modulated delay. "Manual" is delay time, "width" is how much the delay time is modulated, "speed" is how fast it is modulated, and "regen" is how much feedback there is. The difference between flange and chorus is that flange has a shorter delay time, and chorus usually doesn't have any feedback (and sometimes has multiple modulated delay lines). Vibrato is a short modulated delay, but there's no dry signal.
This is a superb lesson and pretty much flawless. You clarified a couple of things for me in the guitar break that I thought I'd pretty much nailed - just goes to show that one should never be complacent and that somebody else might have a different and better take on what you think you already know. My McGeoch arsenal consists of a Marshall JVM 410c, a Roland JC-120, MXR flanger, MXR carbon copy delay and, as of this week, a 1977-vintage Yamaha SG-1000 in almost perfect condition. I haven't sorted any amp switching or flanger stand-mount adaptors yet. It's about time I set to work on sorting out the talent. :D
So I think I'm enchanted with your channel and your playing. I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you do and the songs you choose. I'm just a beginner but to find my favorite music and how to play it is totally amazing.
I am so delighted you posted this. i was going to request it! My favourite version is the Robert Smith playing of it on Nocturne where he stood in for McGeogh. I thought (will have to listen to it again) that he arpeggiates the top three strings once he has hit the chord in the chorus - my favourite bit! But of course, there is now nothing preventing me from doing so! Thanks so much! (and merry Christmas).
Amazing track...thanks for this Adrian. Still proudly got my gold sleeved single, and have fond memories of them opening gigs with this haunting melody. Superb!
Another top lesson, you seem to pick some really cool songs in your tutoials, possibly the best range i've seen on youtube, john mcgeoch what a great guitarist, did some fantastic work in the bands he was in. A real sad loss. keep up the good work, what about some bunnymen.......
Another great track Adrian, brilliant !! Yes I love the MXR Flanger as well, it's very good for McGeoch tributes as well as Keith Levine, although he used The Electric Mistress
Your videos are great! I subbed from Hong Kong Garden a while back and have been watching ever since. I have recently focused on uploading covers from this era, so it is really refreshing to see guitar breakdowns like this on RUclips. Keep up the awesome work, and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Adrian !!!! Love it ! Happy Christmas to you too !
Excellent lesson, I really like the little hammer on pull of lick, he does the same kind of thing on “Heavens inside” with generation X. Also reminds me of the little synth part from “dance yrself clean” by LCD sound system.
I should also say that you consistently do lessons on my favourite songs - lessons that no one else seems to do - The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Kennedys. All we need now are some Talking Heads songs (not necessarily Psycho Killer). In fact, how about an introduction to slide guitar with The Big Country (More Songs About Buildings and Food, not the band)? Probably my favourite Talking Heads song.
Fab stuff ade! You've done this one before, but it seems so much better with the John type guitar and flange setting! Respect due! Please, please do some Geordie chords and riffs!! I've spent years trying to get even a fraction close to his unobtainable massive sound! My no 1 guitar god!!😀
Nailed it again Adrian! Great lesson of a fantastic song by a brilliant guitarist. I note that your recent McGeogh lesson is on the Eastwood website. Would you consider doing anything by Stuart Adamson or perhaps something from Jesus & Mary Chain? Anyway, I really look forward to Fridays to find out what your latest lessons is going to be. Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas 🎄
Adrian- thank you so much for your channel and passion. I just discovered it, and as a beginner in my 50’s, I really appreciate the music choices you make! In addition, including all types of music helps us re-appreciate all different genres- I love it. However, punk and post punk especially are my favorites, and this beautiful rendition of Israel is great. Any chance of doing Spanish Bombs without a capo? I think The Clash did it without, but most videos make use of a capo and I want to do it in its original form. Anyway, thanks again from out here in the States!
Hi Adrian, this might be off the beaten path but you are by far the best teacher on the web. I have been learning some classics and with 5 different teachers, all of their lessons are different! The song is "Give me three steps" by Lenard Skynard. I couldn't find it in your page. Do you have a lesson for this song? And if you don't, well I'd sure like to learn from the best! 😉 Love your work! So thorough!!
This Israel-ly good.
Me: "wow - finally a play in a day!"
Guitar break: "not so fast there, young fella"
Never thought of this as a Christmas song until you mentioned it, finally a Christmas song I can get behind!
Wish I could hit “like” more than once. What a tune, what a lesson.
Thank you to remember us how Mr McGeoch is a great rock guitarist !!! ;)
I've always done the solo bit differently......yours is right. I've been a fan since 78. The music was groundbreaking, creative, innovative. It was amazing to hear the new music he was pioneering in those days.
McGeoch is one of my favorite guitarists, love the flanger sound and that guitar is beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial!
MODEL THE GUITAR? FAN BOY
EASTWOOD SG1000 McGeoch
I love you covering John brilliance, you serve his memory well, he was one of our greats.
Nice one Adrian 😎🎙🎸✅
Amen

Love these Banshees/ McGeoch videos 👏👏
great performance! I bought the record back in the day but to see the guitar parts performed like this really raises awareness of how excellent the guitarist was.
What a teacher. Absolutely awesome. Thanks Adrian for slowing down that spectacular McGeoch break.
What a tune. Nicely done, fella. McGeoch was underrated. Shot by Both Sides another classic .
I absolutely love that tone.. Nailed it again! 👌🏼
I can feel the falling snow in this tune!
Fantastic work. That guy really was something special and original
Good catch on the similarity with "Shine on you crazy diamond"!
You show how creative those musicians where . Thank you for delivering and presenting a break down of how it was achieved.
More Banshees? Why not indeed Mr Woodward. Thanks so much for this Adrian. I have set to work on this and the recent Arabian Knights offering. Challenging. rewarding, educational and fun all at once. What better excuse to wheel out that McGeoch tribute guitar once more.

Great going again, two thumbs up. I really like the live in Cologne 1981 version of this as well.

Finally I can figure out the hammering on lick he does. Thank you for showing me!
Thank you, this is one of my all time fav guitar parts by McGeoch.
Amazing track...thanks for this Adrian. Still proudly got my gold sleeved single, and have fond memories of them opening gigs with this haunting melody. Superb!
Still got mine too!
Because of this channel, I rediscovered so much music and awesome bands I've neglected over the years. Thanks, Adrian.
Just nailed it yet again. Thanks for sharing your excellent work.
Get those sleigh bells higher in the mix 😂 Great as always. I feel the Bailey's coming out.
And a pint of Xmas egg nog for me 👍
Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more sleighbell...

Well said buddy, I like how Adrian picks some more obscure new wave tracks. Which suits me cause I was raised on punk, skinhead, oi and new wave
Another great track Adrian, brilliant !! Yes I love the MXR Flanger as well, it's very good for McGeoch tributes as well as Keith Levine, although he used The Electric Mistress
Absolutely brilliant. You do McGeoch extremely well.
One of my all time favourite songs. McGeoch classic. Beautiful Yamaha by the way
Alas...that's no Yamaha!
@@nostro1001 yes typed the reply mid video, still a very nice looking fiddle!
@@The_Macaroon All good it's an Eastwood John McGeoch tribute model...based on his SG Yamaha.
Yup, it does look rather sweet. 🎸🎸🎸
thank you Adrian for this early Christmas gift !!
Yeah... great lesson. Love how you show us the gear too!
Thanks so much for actually doing songs I want to learn.
Absolutely brilliant 👌
Congrats on your channel! I'm a fan already. Thanks for putting this up
What a fantastic job.
I've improved so much thanks to these songs. Thank you :)
Excellent lesson, I really like the little hammer on pull of lick, he does the same kind of thing on “Heavens inside” with generation X. Also reminds me of the little synth part from “dance yrself clean” by LCD sound system.
Thanks a lot for all your work . Fantastic vidéos, Fantastic bands . Great job ! Cheers from France !
Great tribute to the legend that is John McGeoch, one of a kind lucky we had him at all
Excellent lesson, Adrian, and thanks for the Christmas gift!! Happy Crimbo, and Happy New Year to you and yours!! Stay safe!! Cheers, mate!! :)
Love the bass in this song, too.
You bring a massive smile to my face. Awesome channel
Great one and man you are right about that opening chord, it is magic.
Thanks for explaining it so well. Always stumble on that hammer on-ish bit at 2.36 but hopefully get it sussed now
You’re awesome!! I’d love more siouxsie and the banshees tutorials, you’re great :)
John was a genious, thanks for sharing Adrian!
Yet another superb instructional video - thanks for putting out such consistently great content, Adrian!
Awesome! And what a tune
Magnificent McGeoch, Brilliant Adrian, Thank you
Awesome 👍 🤘🎸 my fav song by them. Your 👍🤘
Thank you for the lesson I do appreciate well done
Great backing track too. Excellent work again Adrian.
A proper SG, great tone just like studio track, well played!
Hey Adrian, can you please do a tutorial for twist - tones on tail?
This is one of my absolute favourite Siouxsie tracks...strike that... my favourite! Nice guitar, thought we would see that Shergold on this one.
Great McGeoch Tuto as usual Adrian!!
top stuff, still got the original 12" for this, playing along now!!
Awesome lesson! 🫶
Thank you so much for producing such a great, well thought out and explained video.
Thanks Adrian Your The Man Simulated very precisely like the original song Riffs ,Thanks Mate Your The Best! 🤝😎🎸😁
Love this stuff, it's great!!!!
as always Adrian, great cover.
Man i really apreciate you mentioning the chord progression that goes behind, its nice to get at least a little bit of insight into the theory
Adrian you're so good. Thanx a lot!!!
This is well bloody cool let anyone be honest about that and be in no doubt.
Excellent as always, I have the same guitar. It’s superb.
The sound of that fricking guitar! wow.... continues to amaze me. So John played harmonics!? I always thought they were single notes...
Seems like he played harmonics, but Robert Smith would play the notes with a D chord shape (sounds better that way when I play it)
Excellent video such a unique sound.
For such a sparse song it is incredibly dense with atmosphere.
Really nice. I've been enjoying learning Arabian Knights, so this is next up
Great !
Thanks Adrian
Brilliant!!!
Thanks Adrian-great song. There is an awesome live recording of this song on RUclips with Robert Smith on guitar!
Thanks for this! Into the Light (Peel Session) would be my request the next time you decide to do a Banshees tune.
If you watch Robert Smith playing this live, he swaps the harmonics for a D shape at the 7th then 14th fret. Presumably to keep the volume constant.
Quality!
Fab stuff ade! You've done this one before, but it seems so much better with the John type guitar and flange setting! Respect due! Please, please do some Geordie chords and riffs!! I've spent years trying to get even a fraction close to his unobtainable massive sound! My no 1 guitar god!!😀
beautiful sound
john fahey and this nice choices
Please do sin in my heart by the banshees!

One of my favourite Banshees numbers. I can just about strum the chords.
