I like what he's saying. Sometimes mixers try to serve technicalities of a good mix instead of the emotion of the song.
Sometimes an imperfect mix will be perfect for a song.

But then you just have one perspective, and might focus too much on a single thing, like "oh the kick sounds too loud".... might not be good at the art trying to di everything at once

Yeah no that never fucking happens.
You do realize that Jeff Ellis threw a tantrum irl when someone said Frank is a good mixer, said he "does everything anyways", someone recorded it, posted in on r/frankocean and then they've never worked together ever again?
You guys need to grow up.

Much of what he said resonates with me as i kinda have the same approach. His "glory moments" terminology makes total sense. Also i always felt mixing is an artistic process first and foremost, so it makes sense to go through this process with both the artist/producer and the mixing engineer in the same room unless the artist really wants to be surprised and trusts the engineers artistic tastes.

Thanks for sharing. Such a great mix. Shows how a really good mix can change a good song to a very good one.
Can't understand why the artist wants the autotune character though.
15:02, I think a good way here would be just honest and say this is music I'm not familiar with and would not do a good job. Always be transparent in your communication and explain why you think you can't take the commission and pass it on.
55:00, some well known mixing engineers would do this and say “what a huge difference” and no one else literally can't hear a thing.

  • @---4385

there's very good advice in there. I think he goes a little bit too far with the ambience-stuff and reverbs, but you can't deny he has the right ideas. I guess if you use this stuff a lot, you get numb to it and use it even more.

I make it a point now not to watch mixing videos that only show mixing in Pro Tools. Like come on, is Pro Tools the only DAW to mix in? This is not the 90's. To me it seems like it's Avid Pro Tools promotions. Professional is making money with your craft. Being professional doesn't mean mixing in Pro Tools only.
