Been mixing and producing since the nineties; it ain’t a mix until you’re feeling it. If you’re not moving in your chair, it ain’t good. You can look at it from all kinds of technical angles but if there’s no mojo/vibe/…. it ain’t gooooood. 😂
This is interesting! Nice to see the other side of the topic ‘minimal plugin use versus the kitchen sink plugin use philosophy ‘ This whole minimal argument gets really boring... The less is more discussion just means exactly that in the right context but it doesn’t mean more is bad.
I liked it. Wish it was twice as long and a bit deeper but that was great. Hung out with this dude at AES and he was cool as shit.. clearly very passionate and talented
Amazing how this fella really just sorta offers his thoughts out loud, but it seems to give more insight and teach more than any "how to" book... maybe that's just how I learn the best - by watching others demonstrate - but either way you can most certainly recognize the emotional and technical intelligence... oh and groovin' track indeed!! Love it! The only thing I've be stuck on.. there's so many awesome layers, but I couldn't stop wanting to showcase them all - guess that separates the men from the boys - or of course the women from the girls - being able to not get TOO EXCITED and exercise your knowledge skill AND RESTRAINT! For indeed mixes are about balances I suppose... Anyways badass!
Agreed, wish they would put out more sessions like these. As for the layers part, you might already know but for whatever it’s worth - the human brain can only perceive & distinguish 7(+/-3) different “sounds” all at the same time/moment on average, at most. There’s a biological/scientific explanation for that, something to do with the majority of people only being able to hold recognition/it’s generally our capacity for how many different things we can discernibly process all at the same time before things become a generally un-discernible collage that is just a jumbled mess of sounds. I put sounds in quotes because it’s not really 7(+/-3) individual sounds....but it’s 7(+/-3) GROUPS of sounds. For example when the whole drum beat(including hi hats) sets in on the one - we tend to perceive that as just “one” sound group in our perception. - But for example if just the kick & snare come into the composition...and then 4 bars/measures later the high hats come in - then we perceive that as 2 different (groups of)”sounds”. It’s all about the sequence of presentation in this setting/example. Anyways what I’m trying to say is you can have practically unlimited layers of sounds and it will still translate perfectly well - IF the each of those sounds unify together to cohesively express only 7(+/-3) individual *groups of sounds. Because the listener usually won’t even recognize that it’s a group of sounds - they’re only take it in as “one” sound/element.
TLDR; There’s no limit to how many layers you can have (other than the one your computer dictates haha) as long as all those sounds ultimately break down into achieving a maximum of only 7(+/-3) individual elements/components of the song.
And PS that's some next level mixing on the vocals there.. my goodness unbelievable how treated, but it sounds 100% real big and ineligible.. neat tricks.. I'm listening on a cell phone with 30 foot ceilings and it's bigger, clearer and fatter sounding than most things coming through my 12" speakers otherwise! 😆

Not that i'm speaking for him, but from what i gather on this video, he would do whatever it takes. I think Dub bass comes a lot from the source too. I've always found a nice set of flatwound strings and the treble rolled off quite a lot get's me a good basic dub bass starting point, even a old bit of foam under the strings trick is worth trying. I've also had good success at using pitch shift plugin an octave down helps, but only blend in a little bit of the lower octave so you're preserving most of the original bass pitch. Also playing quite lightly helps with dub. Maybe a faster attack on the compressor than you might usually use on bass can work on a dub style bass.
I loved using Ableton Lite like this.... the sound is incredible!!! That, but the limitation of 12 fx and 6 plugins was a major letdown... I'm using a full version of mixcraft8 now which will allow ANY vst plugin - no disappointments here. Yes, if psychedelics is your cup of tea - this is the DAW. If you're looking for live rock / any type of audio/midi recording I'd say stick to the 'less is more' easy and inexpensive DAWs
There are none. Women don't know how to mix, that is why... Hehe, I would know, I happen to own a studio, and really all I allow women to do at the recording plant is intern, so basically prepare the coffee in the house. They sure as hell won't touch my Neve console, or any of the outboard - ever. Tea, coffee and phone calls. A few errands here and there, but mixing, nope - definitely not. Nothing personal, this is just how it works. Hehe, no hard feelings.
This guy is on an industry mission to sell you as much plugins as possible. The way he describes how he uses them isn't even serious. Please guys, do yourself a favor and skip this video.
Yeah, but there are no 'good' or 'bad' sounds, just good or bad contexts. So in the right situation they don't even take one single plugin to sound good. But I'm afraid there are some good (payed) engineers on RUclips trying to fade this fact.
jarry Dee bro nothing is more psychedelic than taking your own sounds and sampling them/chopping them up. This aint bootleg shit, this is money! Took him alot of time
So how could this band sound and play exactly like this live? Its over produced if the band cant sound or do everything live that they did on the record which leads to disappointment. That;s why I hate when bands have 4 guitar tracks, 6 backing vocals, 10 drum tracks, 5 percussion tracks etc, when its only a 4 piece band...
I also as everyone else like the mix but I agree with you as well. If it's just strictly a mixing production and nothing else then great piece of Musical ART WORK and CREATIVITY, but too much icing can make any cake taste bad.
I agree that its a bummer when a band/artist can't translate their songs on stage...and equally bad when they can't translate their show to an album... I personally think anything is possible now days with all the amazing tools/musical instruments we have... Thats the fun! Pushing sounds forward, using technology to enhance an album and the live show...Serve the genre, blend genre... I love both. There is no rule that a band has to sound like the album, or vice versa ... A lot of times the fx I create in the studio will not work live in the same way and it becomes very fun to figure out make it have the same feel or better feel in the live context......Rules are there to be broken tastefully...
I would say it depends. If your stuff is overproduced you should put on a very sick live show. I know for a fact Jimmy Page used many guitars on certain tracks but his live stuff was always 100 times better. It could be because they improvised a lot which most bands don't do anymore
the track sounds like a cheaper version of the highly praised led Zeppelinish era. technology moved mountains, yet i wonder why some folks sit there creating digital classic box-rock inside a laptop ...
Huh? This band sounds nothing like Led Zeppelin (or to any band in that vein). Aside from that, why do you have to be one of those "why can't everything be like it used to be" guys?
he's producing the track as much as he's mixing it
That vox verb wash is just insane. Wouldn't mind just seeing that as a tutorial from beginning to end of the chain.
