nothing huge, you get a very superficial view. NOTES: - 808: Boost 20/30Hz and 5/10kHz with Pultec. Paralel processing with RBass + Distortion or Paralel compression - Kick: EQ to boost desired frequencies (30Hz and 10kHz). Paralel comp. And Paralel transient processor + resonator. - Snare/Clap: EQ and soft paralel compression (3:1, fast attack, slow release, -3dB GR) - Hi Hats: Compress a bit
"really you just have to let the record speak to you"....that's exactly what I do when I'm producing...sometimes I might be in the middle of making a hot beat and I'll just grab my lunch, go sit on the floor and let it loop on repeat until the music tells me exactly what is the next element it needs
19:21 mans "EQ'd" the snare without the EQ being enabled. On the UAD SSL, you have to click the "EQ IN" Button just below the LF band in order for the plugin to be active. He probably knew this and just forgot in the moment😂. Great content 🔥
Two things that caught me was the API channel strip on the piano and most of all the Focusrite channel strip on the bell. It added a real nice dimension to that bell. Nicely done bruh.
What is also key is getting great sounds to start with. Mixes can go quickly when you don't have to beef up crappy samples and flimsy drums. So make sure you sound is a good as you can get it before sending to mixers. 9 times out of 10 they will substitute you're lacking sounds with their own punchy samples.
@@branwithoutclaws am mixer, can confirm what they said. If the snare sounds like shit best believe i'm going to replace it/layer it with a stronger one that keeps the same vibe. this is one example but i've completely redid 808's when they're out of key or a weak sample, if it's holding back the song i'll fix it, if it's atypical or not a standard sound I'll keep it as long as it doesn't compromise the vibe. Of course I'm only going to do this with the artist's approval, but 9.9/10 they trust my choices and like the end result better.
I learned a lot from him in this video, I would also like to point out how our ears can trick us because when he first pulled up the SSL EQ, the EQ was not engaged. He made changes to the snare I believe but nothing was actually happening. He never turned it on. Let that be a lesson that our eyes can make our ears think we are hearing something that we are actually not. No shade to him because I've done it before as well lol
I think the big difference in his mixes vs amateurs is he can hear the tonal changes every plug-in gives each sound and tweak it to his preference. Numerous small changes that make a big difference overall is the goal here. He barely touches a lot of plugins but they remain in the mix to change the tone. He either has perfect listening skills or his studio is perfectly calibrated or a combination of both.
The way he mixed that 808 is very interesting. Boosting 20hz is something I’ve never heard before but it sounds good and makes sense, it’s about as low as we could ever hear and is pure sub frequency content, also boosting the highs like 8-10k is something I do personally but don’t ever see or hear people do on the 808
Im thinking thats on the right track. I boost the high on bass a lot because the air lives up there, which also makes sense on why he would use a distortion send as his eq would already be boosting the frequency a bit.
Nice one! Just one thing: the tip on H-Delay at 49:40 , there's not much info on it but IMO the 4 delay modes are not just added noise or hum, but also changing the delay sound. Mode 2 has to much hiss for me, and 3 distorts low level tails, but anyway all of them are diffent delay sounds to explore. Cheersss
This is literally the best rap mixing video I’ve seen on all RUclips so far! Thanks for that. That will be so amazing if you can get him to do another rap mixing video on your channel! Cheers!
multiple parallel compression. Man the more and more I learn the more i realize using more than one compressor to split up the work just sounds better.
The thing I learned about mixing is it’s truly about finding your sound once your comfortable rapping I suggest going to a professional studio even if it’s a bit pricey I mix a lot of my own tracks so I would hope to get my template
