Ive watched a lot of mixing videos from puremix to mix with the masters etc and this is by far the best and im not even just talking about the mixing part but the introduction summed up the life we live as mixing engineers. Love David he has set the bar this last years, solidified his spot as a great in the industry.
Yoooooooooooooooo shoutout David Kim 🤌😭 such a amazing down to earth hard working engineer ! Always giving back , even responded to my dm and gave me advice ! Thanks for this , from an intern looking up 🙇🏽♂️
This is by far the best mixing video that I've ever watched and left actually understanding the concepts behind the decisions of the engineer. Awesome stuff 👏🏼 👌 👍🏽
Ok, I confess that I'm not a real rap aficionado, but watching you mix this and hearing the results I was VERY impressed! You are a very talented mixer and you are going to go even further in this industry. Great job!
i watched his introduction and that was enough just hearing him makes me want to switch this of and get creative so peace out yall i hope your shine is blinding, sincerely
I've never watched a whole mix through start to finish, but I completely understand my guys mindset and approach to mixing! Well done my dude! You mixing is tight! 👌
There is a certain presence when recording that inspires someone immediately, even before they start their work. David is definitely my most influential person in that regards. I mix classical music, and orchestra, with some in pop and indie and folk, but not Hip Hop, Rap and R&B, and David gave such insight to how something is just glued together with that industry standard. Thank you for posting this iZotope!
This video is very insightful I love how he explained why he was doing certain things it helps me have more confidence in my decisions and to trust my ear! Thank you izotope for these tutorials its helping me dive into the mixing world and understand it! 🙏🏽
Great progression from psychological gems to technical ones. What an ad for the iZotope suite which I'm already using but definitely not leaving it now haha. Delivered in such a chilled way 🤙🏼
Now that I upgraded my Izotope Bundle, I had to come back here to pick up a few tricks...Nectar 4 is a trip...I always stay learning from YUNGIN' & appreciate ya'll doing this. Peace, Love + Blessings. =)
Fantastic work on that Nipsey record. It just hits different, the music and the production. I felt that after the first 20 seconds of listening to it. Thanks for that! Great pick for the series iZotope! Strange sidestory: Nas made me become a fan of hiphop, too. After that I listened to a lot of great music, but sometime at the end of the 90ies, the ship kind of sailed for me and I got stuck on those artists. The love just wasn't the same any more. I only got excited once for music again for a short period listening to 50 Cent and Papoose. Those 2 were different. Since then I listened to thousands of songs and artists, but nothing really caught on for about a decade until I heard "Racks in the Middle". That song stood out, the sound stood out, too. There was that feel again, that I thought would probably never come back again. David Yungin Kim hit that vibe and and I'm still listening to Nipsey every day. To me the guy is one of the greats.
I love when you see the mix engineer mixing with all that analog stuff around but only using plug ins :) and it's quite often. However very good track, very good vibe and very good advices from a humble but talented person !
Yea people bought all that stuff waay back when it sounded better and was the only way to get that sound. Now you can get very very close to the same sound with plugins.
Hey dude, even that hip hop is not the genre of music that I affectionate a lot, this is dope man!!! I'm seeing this musical universe way differently now. Thanks and keep up the excellent work. Greetings from Mauritius
16:58 never hit the gain match button 😮??? 25:28 a limiter on the beat track before the vocals ? I’ve done it when I first started years ago but I thought that was something we should avoid before adding the vocals ? Any thoughts 💭
Wow. I am new to recording and mixing and learning in my home studio. I have IZotope pro and have been learning with it it but wasn't sure if I have been using it properly or if I should have been using other plugins as many mixers promote. This was soooo helpful. Thanks so much and what an unbelievable presentation from a genuine and truly inspirational expert. Thanks again.
According to Jaycen Joshua, when they send the mix to A&R or whoever approve the mix, if the record doesn't sound like they hear on the radio, they might lose the mix. So They use to master it but when they send the mix to the mastering engineer they'll just turn it off. This could be the reason but I could be wrong. Or maybe he'll master it himself. Idk
@@jeremiahmaryland I know what a mix bus is ver clearly. I was told by a mastering engineer not to put a maximizer on a master bus if you are expecting to have the song master because it’s pushing the level to high which limits head room when mastering
I thought it was interesting that he ran the Imager in parallel and that he only added width to the low band. I usually only add width to the highs and high mids. There's a preset on Imager called "Gentle Width" that works well on most stuff. Definitely would never have thought to add parallel width to my lows, but I guess in hip hop bass is less mono than it is in the kind of rock music I make.
think that all theses process could fit very nice with high quality studio vocals, drums, but when we talk bout home studio, we already know that u should need more process to make sound good, very nice tutorial btw🔥
If I had to use Pro-tools, 1 monitor and that rolly ball mouse I would pull my hair out. I could not stand that lol. This was awesome, thank you David.
Really interesting to see the process and how organized it is. Got to say that the tune isn't anywhere near to my taste, but it's educational anyway :)

Using the mix knob on the de-esser is a great tip, thanks Kim!

Why is there a mastering plug in on the master output? Is the mix not going to be sent for mastering or is the the final master?
According to Jaycen Joshua, when they send the mix to A&R or whoever approve the mix, if the record doesn't sound like they hear on the radio, they might lose the mix. So They use to master it but when they send the mix to the mastering engineer they'll just turn it off. This could be the reason but I could be wrong. Or maybe he'll master it himself. Idk

What a fantastic person! Thanks for this enlightening video. Life lessons as well as mixing ones. Much love and respect!
I'd advise eq the input to reverbs, high-pass (300Hz) and low-pass (5kHz)
izotooooope is best
Awesome!!!!

Some great methods. Note how the big mixing console isn't even touched throughout.
Video and track was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Much love
Very good one but I'm expecting another video with pop music mixing 😎
Melody bitt from Tupac - no more pain
HEY DIDNT HAVE THE PLASURE OF WORKING WITH YOU BUT ONE DAY GOD WILLING I WILL YOUR GREAT MAN LOVE THE SOUND GOD BLESS
33:14 he got the reverb on a bus but has 50/50 dry/wet. I wonder if that is on purpose or accidental?
Definitely a mistake, but it ended up being ok! Thanks for catching that!
The song is fire
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
What i learned about mixing vocals in this video is that 80% of the mxing is done by the the perfectly treated room and outboard compressor and EQs
Love from India ❤️

I’m a beginner at mixing and mastering. Could you elaborate what hot keys, routing and signal flow is?
