We narrowed down everyone and chose Catherine to mix our music a few years back and unfortunately didn't fit the schedule as she was backlogged. I think it was a mistake not to wait and go with her. She's brilliant.
I was so excited when I saw the description for this one. I admit I wasn't familiar with Catherine Marks. But the list of the bands she's produced and mixed speaks for itself. I'm used to mixing masterclasses featuring songs I don't care for. I still enjoy those videos, but they have limited applicability for me. I'm not trying to mix other people's music. I'm trying to mix my own indie rock productions. So to get a class with the kind of music I might actually write and record is amazing. I was even more excited when you said the song was going to be Manchester Orchestra. Love them. And after watching the video, I can say she more than did their song justice.
Thank you!!! I'd never heard of her before but she's got credits with like 15 of my top 100 favorite bands of all time... & from an extremely wide range of genres as well, can't wait to look into her work some more, as the proof of her exceptional skill is in the pudding-product
Really nice work by Catherine. I"m going to start sidechaining the delay/verb wash off the click. Really clever. I'd imagine this production took some time as it's nicely put together with a load of fun sounds to fit into two speakers. Nicely done!
Wow, Catherine’s career sounds exactly like the type of audio engineer I would like to model myself after. Thank you for bringing her work to light for me.
i'm gratified, at least, that i knew what i was about to hear after she played the rough mix. whether or not i know how to get there is another matter...
SonicScoop what a GREAT video.... I have 1 question for Catherine.... I'd like to know what bit rate are you using... I can't see it in the video... Is it 44.1k 24bit or 48k 24 bit..??? Great mixing techniques she did...I am taking NOTES.... SALUTE From your boy Poorhouzzzzzz
We usually refer to those numbers as sample rate (samples/second) and bit depth (bits per sample), bit rate is more common in streaming applications. I don’t know many engineers that record at 44.1kHz. It isn’t all that useful unless your only release medium is CD. Stick with 48k and its multiples, you’ll be less likely to need a conversion step.

21:14 I always see people doing this but it often kills the transients and makes it 2d sounding. Kind of takes musicality away. Wish there was a way to do it ITB
Would love to know Catherine's gain-staging process. All those drum tracks look like they are maxed out at 0. Normalized to zero. I mean, to get a loud master you need a loud mix, but there is some sorcery going on here! Never really saw where the faders are set or the mix bus fader.
I was hoping to see the mix view at some point to see fader levels and panning. It looks like the waveform size have been increased visually to show more detail, but that does not affect on the audio level of the individual tracks.
What do distortion, delay, and modulation have to do with musicianship and songwriting? They’re tools for enhancing production and further conveying the emotion of a song. They won’t write a song for you.
@@ryancrawford9894 Of course, it's true they don't write the song for you, but the tools themselves can facilitate that process in one direction or another.
@@in.der.welt.sein. not my point. I love effects for generating ideas. OP insinuated that they are not good musicians. Pretty laughable to draw that conclusion based on the tools an artist chooses to use, especially considering their catalog includes a lot of stripped down material as well.
I can? Didn’t have trouble with a single word! But I guess some people have heard more British accents than others. I found this one to be pretty mild! Out of curiosity, what part of the world are you from? -Justin
Not into the the trashy trendy mix aesthetic, sounds like a broken mastering job. Think we'll look back in the future and cringe. Thanks for showing your work though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. that bit when she showed the fader automation to catch the end of a word made me smile 27:03

Thanks SS and Catherine Marks - so wonderful to be introduced to this mixer and track and the process behind it!

So much clarity in the final. So much more in front with so much separation.
the rough mix sounded good to me, but when she played the final mix everything just came to life. incredible
When said “I hate mixing toms” I felt that in my soul

More of this please! Great mix breakdown! Impressed by the use of soundtoys pretty much in the whole mix!
Awesome! Love her and her work with St Vincent !
Learned so much watching this, Catherine is a hero!!! Thank you so much all for doing it.
Fab job.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👌
The level of textures and detail in all those dirty layers is fascinating. Depth inc.!
Never fails to have such an awesome guest showcasing such a cool song!! This was so enjoyable. Thank you.
I loved watching your enjoyment of the track. It really is a super tune!!!
Catherine sounds really down to earth and honest. Her mixes reflect her personality. Lovely person I suspect.
Seems like it to me! 🙂

She's great! Mad Props to her vision
What a great producer Catherine is! The way shes sees the bigger picture of the track and gets her results is gorgeous..
That trashy loop is BADASS. Great video!
Thanks for making these videos! I love SoundToys!
Reminds me of Carpark North 👍🏻
Huge drums and vocals.
This was great. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!! :D
Ok I’m back to this interview after listening to the song on Spotify. I’m ready cuz the song was fuego🔥
Interesting. Building on building.
Well you’re awesome

this was amazing! thank you so much!!! 👽🥰
Manchester Orchestra is the best band out currently. Catherine is a big part of that. It’s perfection all around.

She mentioned an EQ boost at 27kHz, which made me wonder if the project was recorded and mixed at 96kHz.
Great vid, and, for once, mixing a decent song 😁
