    Daniel Smith & Jean Haines have come out with 2 new sets, this video shows the paints in cluded in the 10 5ml tubes set.
    I didn't purchase the complete set, which is why some tubes are 15ml and some 5ml. I had some already so only purchased the missing ones, Imperial purple was out of stock in tube form, so I got the stick, which performs as well in my experience.
    You can find the set here (prices at time of posting this video)-

    Great video as Ive been contemplating the set plus it was fun to see/hear about the stick. It’s so important to hear not just the excitement level as you noted but also the frustration level esp coming from a great watercolorist like yourself. It makes me feel better to hear the acknowledgments you noted on how it can be hard to paint like some of the things she does. And I’d noted also she uses a limited color palette in most of her individual works and then see so many colors that are very multi dimensional.

    • @iritlandgraf

      Hey Kim! So glad you enjoyed the video! I think it's crucial to keep it real, and share our frustrations as well. Social media can be frustrating with people sharing all the time gorgeous images, one can feel inadequate very fast. As for Jean's style, as an artist who hardly ever (has she ever?? lol, trying to think) mixes paint in her palette AND uses a limited palette, she knows how to pick colors that serve her style best. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

    The truth is that no one can paint like anyone else. You have to learn and evolve your own style and way that you paint. It is like people who run out and buy the brush that someone they admire use, thinking they will be able to paint like them.. it is NOT the BRUSH/paint/ pen. Etc. it is the artist..you can pick up approaches but not paint like someone else, at least with out wasting al lot of time trying to copy.. thanks for the video..

    Nice review! I have a few of these colors already, and most of the others are tempting. But as much as I adore Jean and her work (I'm a student in her online school) I am not flipping out over this palette...so many greens and not a warm red in sight, nor a blue that's truly blue. Such a whimsical palette! It's too bad you found Jean hard to follow along with as a tutor. My experience has been the opposite! After feeling that way with so many other tutors, I feel as if I've hit the jackpot with Jean! I love how she simplifies the process and thanks to her teaching talent I'm now create art that I want save instead of chuck in the bin... always a plus!

      I think her palette is a great addition to a basic palette which probably all watercolor artists have, and that's one of the things I like about it. It's an add on, not a stand alone, if that makes sense.

    I think Jean choose colors that moved, separated, or granulated in this collection. Even though I agree with you on Quin Magenta it does moves and pushes other colors. Imperial purple has he same pigments as Rose of Ultra in reverse proportions so if you add more Quin Rose you get Rose of ultra. I love your end result ladies.

    • @iritlandgraf

      She picked great stuff, I definitely need to play more with quin. magenta, see how it plays with others. Yup I thought that too about Imperial purple, can't go wrong with ultramarine blue and quin rose!!

    Another fabulous video. Loved your version of the dancing ladies! I need to practice drawing faces. My To Do list keeps growing.
    That brush is incredible - the quill or round? It’s so fat/full yet keeps a wonderful point!
    Also - is there a way to predict which colors/pigments will push their way into others, or is it essentially a trial and error process? I watched a video of Alyona’s on Naphthalide Maroon and learned that is a VERY pushy paint.
    Thanks you once again for sharing your time and talent with us. It’s a treat to hear you smiling with your voice. So much doom, gloom, and chaos right now. Your disposition is a much needed treat!!

    I love this set of paints, but out of my budget at the moment. I have way too many watercolor sets already. I have all of Jean Haines' books and love them. I've done many of the lessons in various books and I agree with you! I am totally intimidated. I consider myself a low intermediate level watercolor artist and my attempts at her style, which I love, has challenged me! It looks so easy when I watch her! I have a DVD of hers too so I've seen her actual process. My outcomes are nothing like that. Like anything, I suppose, practice, practice, practice.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  4 года назад +2

      Lol, yup, intimidation factor- 25 out of 10... I completely agree with you on everything. I've seen I think all of her videos, I think there's always a lot more that goes into a finished painting, as opposed to a demo, but even her demos are tough to immitate. Oh well, in the meantime we can have some watercolor fun!

    • @glorioskiola
      @glorioskiola 4 года назад

      The loose watercolor style makes it difficult to imitate because so much depends on exactly how much water you use, exactly how much pigment you use, exactly how much you move the pigment around with your brush. I can’t even imitate myself! That is the nature of the loose style.

    Thanks for another helpful video! Watercolors are magic, for sure, and I’m bedazzled like so many millions of other artists 👩🏼‍🎨 Here I am again, catching up with some of your older vids that show no age, of course. I am pretty sure I’m going to get this set. This “color way” in this set is one that I love. I also have the Qor High Chroma set, a big fave, that kind of reminds me of this one. It is only 6 colors in 5 ml tubes, though, and doesn’t have the same dynamism as this one. So even though between the Qor High Chroma set (the Cobalt Teal is to die for) and some other sets and tubes I have of other premium brands, I have about 3 or maybe 4 of the Jean Haines set already. But I would like to have the others too, so I’m probably going to purchase it. Currently the low price winner is Amazon Prime at $52, but the way things work, the price could suddenly jump up by $5 or $10, so I might better snag it quickly. Thanks again, Irit! 🌸🌺🌻

    I have this set, and it's a bit different than in your examples: e.g. the lunar blue is practically black, and dilutes to grey, not blue. Even the tube looks different (label is almost black too). There is no colour in the set I got with which you could paint the water in your last sketch.
    These were my first DS colours, and I was a bit disappointed as no blue, but three very similar greens. So really not useable as a standalone. (At the time I only had pans, and find it awkward to use pans and tubes at the same time.) Of course, by now I do have more colours so it's fine - though I still don't know if I will ever use up the three greens.

      I haven't gotten her latest one, because I'm guessing it aims more at beginners, and while I love her whole painting yourself calm mantra, I feel that for myself, those exercises are no longer satisfying, I have piles of papers with washes, I need a bit more, KWIM? Also guessing paint youself positive is very similar to paint yourself calm? While I like that book, it's probably my least favorite of hers, as I feel it has the least amount of 'meat' (less technique based) to it. Hope that makes sense :)

    Hi Irit! New subscriber here~ I love your channel! I'd be very interested to see a video where you suggest some paint alternatives to the JEAN HAINES Daniel Smith Master Paint Set. This set isn't available in my country in SE Asia but the colours seem interesting to work with. Holbein, Shinhan, Kusakabe, Sennelier, and W&N are more available around this area. The western countries in North America and Europe seem to have very cool sets that aren't imported in the east so I think paint alternatives would make for great content. Not only just for this set but other sets from other brands too :)

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  4 года назад

      Hey Anna and welcome! I'm so sorry to say that one of the reasons I love that set so much is that I feel the colors are so unique. I would definitely suggest you check out Jane Blundell's website where she swatches pretty much every watercolor on the face of the earth and see if you can find some interesting paints.
      I am actually not as familiar with the Holbein , Shinhan Kusakabe (first time I'm hearing about them!) range. I love Sennelier but I don't think they have such colors like the more special ones in the Jean Haines set. Holbein has some interesting shades like shadow violet that remind me of moonglow for example.
      When breaking down the Jean Haines set I'd say the most unique colors are Moonglow, Lunar Blue, Cascade Green, Green Apatite Genuine, Undersea Green. The others, while beautiful, are not that unique.
      I'm so sorry I cannot be more helpful...
      Have you tried ordering from Jackson's art? I think they ship worldwide... I will give this some more thought and a closer look at my collection, if I come up with anything useful I'll be sure to update!

I appreciate it very much! :D I will certainly check out Jane Blundell and hehe, yes, those brands are Korean and Japanese. YES, I was particularly interested in those ones, especially the lunar blue and cascade green but also the opera pink. No need for apologies, you've been such a sweetheart :) Ahhh I've heard of Jackson's but I don't order online internationally anymore as the things I have ordered in the past have always gotten slapped with extreme customs taxes, usually as much as the product itself or even more. Again, thank you so much for your reply!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  4 года назад

      You're welcome Anna, I wish there was an easy solution... I know personally I very rarely order from outside the EU because I have to pay customs and a handling fee... Jackson's usually have good shipping prices, so depending on the limit of the min amount you need to pay customs for, you could maybe split your order to 2 and avoid at least those costs... Also I know Holbein have dot cards where you can try out all their paints (Daniel Smith too), those are very helpful in my opinion to decide which colors you really want to invest in. Good luck!

    I have a question...probably just shows my ignorance.....but I am looking at the color chart that she did with the colors....how did she get those mixes? • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  4 года назад

      I think those mixes are watered down so you can see the paint, otherwise it's hard to see, straight from the tube. Mostly one tried to get a good representation of the mix in such a chart, not too close to either original paints. Obviously when you mix green with green or yellow it's not a huge change, but it starts to get interesting when you mix complementary colors like yellow and purple. Anyway, hope this helps!

      Hi Thomas! I'm glad to hear you had a good experience with the sticks. I'm actually considering getting a stick instead of a 15ml tube whenever that color is available in a stick, as they are more user friendly IMO. As for the price, DS are of course more expensive in Europe as they are in the US, but I'm still wondering if it's not a very competitive and economical options. For example right now, the Cobalt teal Blue is cheaper in stick form by 2$ than the 15ml tube and the amount is similar, plus no messy tubes...

      @@iritlandgraf hmm i think so too if i want a color they have in stick form ill take it as stick. But only with the daniel smith brand theyr the only one where i absolutely see no difference in pigments and color compared to the tube with the same color😅 and you can cut them perfectly for pans or if you want to built a pallete like that and great for outdor and trafeling... i think they have 51 colors in stick form🤔 so thats actually pretty much already. Theyr from california no? Would be really interresting what they cost there im from austria and its really expensive here... but the same thing we have the schminke less expensive and what i know theyr reaaly expensive in the usa... long story 😅

      Haha, I feel your pain, I'm in Austria too, I buy my DS paints from Jackson's, they are more expensive locally (I've only seen them online in Austria at Gerstaecker, at my local Bösner they don't stock them...) DS is located in Washington state in the US actually. Schmincke is a beautiful paint, I adore it! I prefer their formula and performance, but they don't have the DS color range, and are not vegan (but their student line is)...

      Haha yes White Nights are such great value and so lovely to paint with! Boesner need to get DS stat. My local store in Graz used to carry Sennelier and the stopped recently... Not sure why. Schmincke is the easiest to find.

    You’re so right! I agree with you, some artists do great work but so hard to learn from. Paul Sheeler, on the other hand, does some beautiful work and he is wonderful to follow. He can teach without saying a word. Check him out.

    As you are doing a review and showcasing these watercolours I'm genuinely curious why you aren't swatching these colours on 100% cotton watercolour paper - as I believe you are not doing theses colours (or any watercolours for that matter) any justice by not using 100% cotton watercolour paper because you just cannot achieve the magical effects (effortlessly or otherwise) by using anything less than 100% cotton watercolour paper but especially not on 'sketching' paper....Just asking...

      Both sketchbook used have watercolor paper in them. Like many other watercolorists, I enjoy working in a sketchbook. When working on single sheets I use watercolor paper as well, 100% cotton. I agree it is a must to use good quality watercolor paper to get the best results. As for this video, you can look at the close ups and see how lovely the colors separated and flowed. Hope that satisfies your curiosity!

      Haha your comment made me laugh, but also made me think that this set is aimed at artists that already have watercolors. This is not a starter basic set, and actually besides maybe quin magenta, all the paints in the set are interesting secondary or tertiary colors that wouldn't be included in a basic set. So I think she made interesting choices of paints that many might not be familiar with. Just sharing my thoughts 😊
